Mail.app + IMAP Gmail

HI all,
I need some help.
I use Gmail exclusively for my e-mail, I have two separate accounts (campus + personal) that I am using w/ Mail.app. One account is a Gmail EDU (Google Apps) account, and the other is a regular Gmail account.
Here's my issue...
I've set up both Gmail accounts as IMAP accounts, however, I've noticed that Mail.app will automatically put a check in the box "Save Sent Mail on Server" despite unchecking this box. According to Google, "Save Sent Mail on Server" should be unchecked. (see link below).
I'll uncheck the box, however, later on after I've sent mail from the Gmail account, I'll see an _[IMAP]/Sent Messages_ folder in my Gmail account. I'll delete the label, go back into Mail.app, and sure enough "Save Sent Mail on Server" is checked!
I've deleted both ~/Library/name/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist and _~/Library/name/Application Support/Mail/._ << Doesn't matter, it still will keep checking that box.
I've tested this on two, separate Macs (my MBP and iMac) and the issue persists on both machines, so I'm guessing it's a bug. The funny part is my EDU account (which is also a Google Gmail account, but .EDU) does not do this--only the Gmail account.
Thoughts?

This might be a solution for you to accomplish that.
SOLUTION 1:
Create a rule in Mail as follows:
"TO" > "Contains" > "email address for that account"
Action:
"Mark Message as Read"
All you messages will be marked as read and won't appear in the message count, but you won't know what's new when you look at that account.
or
SOLUTION 2:
I tested this using the Important Label in gmail, but should also would work if you create a new label in gmail.
Create a label (Example: Inbox 2) in gmail. Choose to show in IMAP, but leave it under the IMAP folder in Mail. Create a rule in Mail:
"TO" > "Contains" > "email address for that account"
Action:
"Move Message "  to mailbox  "select the mailbox you created under the gmail folder"
Now, every message going to that account will now be moved to the mailbox you created under the gmail folder, so it won't appear under the main inbox. You can still access and control those messages under the gmail folder.

  • What's wrong with Gmail & Mail.app (IMAP)

I recently set up Mail.app for Gmail using IMAP. Since then I've noticed that my inbox in Mail.app and in Gmail on the web is always out of sync. For example, I have one message listed in my inbox in Mail.app right now, and there are eight still in the inbox in Gmail. Also, I have several folders in Mail.app (corresponding to labels in Gmail). When I move a message from the inbox in Mail.app to one of these folders, and then try searching for it 30 minutes later, it doesn't appear in the folder or anywhere in Mail.app. If I go to Gmail on the web an search for it, however, it shows up there.
The irony of it all is that I finally decided not to renew my MobileMe subscription and switch over to Gmail. I'm beginning to regret that decision.
Is anyone else having these problems? If not, maybe it has something to do with my configuration?

Back in 2006 I've worked in a minor ISP hosting a few hundreds of e-mails and dealing with SMTP communication between servers... And often I had to analyse logs to see what has gone wrong, and it was never the same issue.
Each big company have their own SMTP standards, built on top THE SMTP standard, to solve their own issues in their own ways, and sometimes communication between them just break for whatever reason. It's something being constantly updated and it's hard to keep track of things.
I'm just supporting *Jon Markle*'s words on this issue - it is pretty random and there's no single point at fault to blame.

  • Difficulty consistently syncing mail.app with gmail IMAP

I've got my gmail account mapped to mail.app via IMAP. However, when I move a folder from inbox to a gmail folder (within mail.app) that gmail folder shows up as empty and only through gmail webmail does it show up!ail! I've got four emails in my @W-F folder on gmail, but while the @W-F imapped folder shows up in mail.app, the emails within it do not. Please help with this syncing problem. I sincerely appreciate it. Thanks.
    All the best,
    John

    Hi patrico.
If I’ve understood it correctly, it’s as if Mail was simply not checking for mail on the server...
Could it be that the account is in an “offline” state? Is the Mailbox > Go Online command enabled or disabled?
What’s the time interval chosen in Preferences > General > Check for new mail?
Go to Preferences > Accounts > Advanced. Is Include when automatically checking for new mail ON or OFF?
    <hr>
Do you have any Mail plug-ins? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you may just copy it from this post and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You may then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
    ls -1 /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • Mail.app with gmail setup question

    hello,
i have a large gmail account i have been using with mail.app for a long time and all works normally. however the "gmail style" is getting a bit out of control for me with the duplicates in sent/all mail. my processing is simple, after reading an email i archive it (so my inbox is always clean) so it means i move it to all mail. but since sent messages are also in all mail i'm pretty sure mail.app is storing these messages twice and whenever you search for messages you always have to filter through the duplicates. I think there are some newer ways to sync mail.app with gmail and i just wanted to ask what's the best solution to this common issue?
    thank you,
    rick

thanks for the reply. yes that is what i do sorry if i wasn't clear enough. actually the messages coming in are not duplicated since once i move them to All Mail there is only one copy there in All Mail. it's the sent messages since they are saved once in Sent and once in All Mail. does that make sense and how do other deal with this?
    thanks again,
    rick

  • Keep on getting double notification  from my default mail app, and gmail app, how do i make google my primary one?

keep on getting double notification  from my default mail app, and gmail app, how do i make google my primary one? so that i dont have to get doulbe notifications  on both apps

This is probably not the answer to all your questions, but I am sure it answers some.
Unlike Word and InDesign, FrameMaker's anchored frames, which hold graphics, "hang" from their insertion points, typically at the end of the paragraph. An anchored frame that follows a paragraph is set to be below the line, the line being the last line in the paragraph. If you turn on View > Text Symbols, you will see a marker that indicates the point from which the anchored frame is hanging.
If the anchored frame is taller than the available space, it is moved to the next page ALONG with that last line. If the paragraph style/tag has a widow/orphan lines number that is more than 1, then that number of lines are also moved to the next page, because the paragraph tag says to keep that many together, EVEN if there is space at the bottom of the previous page.
So, you can set the widow/orphan lines number smaller OR as you have done put a blank line before the anchored frame, which now holds the marker for the anchored frame, and set its font size to 2 pt (the lowest FrameMaker allows) and its line height to zero. This is the standard workaround UNLESS you use the line above the anchored frame as the title/caption of a figure, which is also a typical way of dealing with FrameMaker's ways.
To my knowledge, one cannot change the default of the checked cropped box. Maybe others know of some way to change this.
There is no page break in FrameMaker, hence there is no symbol for it. In the paragraph designer for the paragraph, you set to Start of the paragraph to Top of page. Top of page is FrameMaker's equivalent to a page break. To "remove" a page break, set the Start of the paragraph to Anywhere.
Since you are new to FrameMaker, I suggest reading throught the User Manual that comes with FrameMaker. You will likely find the answers to most of your questions there.
    Hope this helps,
    Van

  • IOS 7 Mail App, my gmail has 10,000 unread messages

In the mail app, my gmail says I have 10,473 unread messages,

on my phone all the message appear to all be marked as read.  However, the inbox says 10K unread messages,
    help please

I posted this elsewhere on here. Apple has an issue with the new email client.
    I've made 5 calls to Apple support and have escalated this as far as possible by phone. It has now been escalated to the next group, and I was informed they don't work by phone. Some basics;
    1. Didn't have this problem on ios 6
    2. I have three POP accounts with the same server (verizon)
    3. This only happens on 2 of the 3 accounts.
    4. "Mark All" and "As read" doesn't fix it.
    5. Deleting some emails on the server doesn't fix it.
    6. Marking all the emails as "read" on the server (via web client) doesn't work.
    7. 2nd level support's answer was to just delete the emails off the server (that ain't happening).
    So that's where we are

  • Confusion with mail.app and Gmail using imap

I've had a yahoo.com email address for years, and pay for Mail Plus and POP3, which I frankly don't even use. Now that I've confirmed, however, that I can successfully forward emails from my yahoo box to my new gmail box, I'd like to look into setting up mail.app for the gmail account using imap. Like most people, I access my mail from several places (home & work computers, Touch, and others), and imap makes sense as the right way to go.
Last night I tried to set things up on mail.app on the Mac, and boy was it confusing in terms of the folders, etc. Is there someplace someone can point me for a sort of "beginner's guide to setting up Gmail/imap with mail.app"? Hopefully this "guide" would give me some hints on setting up various rules, etc. that would allow me to have a setup that makes sense: only one copy of emails, sent items in the sent items folder, etc.
One more thing: can I set up Gmail/imap with more than one email client? For example, can I use mail.app at home and Thunderbird on the Windows computer in my office? And how is the creation of new folders (or labels, I guess, as Gmail calls them) on the web handled by mail.app (or Thunderbird)? I'm guessing that a new label created on Gmail on the web doesn't automatically result in a folder being created in mail.app (or Thunderbird), or does it? If this is correct (no folder created in mail.app until I create it on the Mac), is the message that was moved to a folder on the web found in mail.app in the All Messages folder (or whatever it's called)?
Sorry for the basic nature of these questions...this all seems pretty complicated, and I'd like to get it right the first time. Thanks.

BTW Thanks for the "head's up" that GMail now supports IMAP (I've been waiting for it!)
I'm not sure what your confusion is, other than maybe the confusion between how folders and messages work in Outlook versus Apple Mail and IMAP. I've used both, and several other mail programs over the years.
IMAP permits you to have directories which contain message folders. I make the distinction, because Outlook allows you to message folders which contain messages AND other message folders. I believe most implementations of IMAP do not allow messages inside of directories. Thus, a directory looks like a message folder, but it may only contain message folders, and not individual messages.
Now, GMail appears to create message folders for each label you define in GMail, and messages which have several labels appear in each folder. If you copy the folders to your computer, you WILL have multiple copies of those messages, however if you leave them on the server, GMAIL does all the work and you only have one copy of each message.
Special folders in GMail are all located in the directory [Gmail] and include the message folders "All Mail", "Drafts", "Sent Mail", "Spam", "Starred" and "Trash". Notice I say "directory" and not "message folder" for "[Gmail]". That is important.
I cannot attest as to what GMail does when you create a folder from your mail.app client, as I have not done that yet. I would venture a guess that it will define a GMail label and mark any messages you "move" to that folder with that label. The GMail special folder "All Mail" contains all of your mail messages, and is equivalent to selecting "All Mail" when using the web interface.
Your inbox messages will appear in the section with all of your inboxes at the top of your mailbox list. Make sure that you set your preferences to match the recommended preferences for Apple Mail when setting up your GMail account. Otherwise you will end up with duplicates and/or a lot of unnecessary data transfers to your Mac.
Hope this helps. If not, please give a more explicit example of something that doesn't work the way you expect.

  • Garbled messages in Mail.app (using Gmail IMAP)

Several of my archived messages in Gmail are displaying with garbled headers in Mail.app, which is configured to access my Gmail account via IMAP. Here's what the headers look like:
    ------=NextPart_000_001601CA70CE.4D0AAE80
    +Content-Type: text/plain;+
    charset="us-ascii"
    +Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit+
And here's an excerpt from the body:

    MjIyMjIyMjIyMjIyMjIyMjIyMjIyMjIyMjIy/8AAEQgAYABdAwEiAAIRAQMRAf/EAB8AAAEFAQEB
Note that the message displays perfectly in Gmail on the web.

Yesterday I tried to move all my messages from Gmail to MobileMe to work around this. I created a new label "Archive" in Gmail web and marked all my mail in "All Mail" with this label so they would show up in IMAP. In Mail.app I disabled "Move messages to Trash" to avoid having them deleted.
Unfortunately I could not move my messages, around 1 out of 50 had the problem described above, so MobileMe did not allow me to upload them because of the missing headers. These were old messages, never opened by Mail.app earlier, and it was true that they missed some headers: they were exported from Outlook and Opera Mail years ago. But still they had all the header fields a mailer would display (To, From, Cc, Subject). Anyway the fact Mail.app cannot display these properly is perhaps acceptable in this case.
However the problem being unable to display certain recently received, archived messages on my Gmail account still applies. Those messages were not modified in any way, only Gmail and Mail.app were used to access them.
Needless to say, the old messages mentioned above that went through Outlook and Opera Mail look OK both on the web and in Thunderbird, too. At least I knew that I realized early that I could not move all messages this way to MobileMe. I am going to try moving my messages again with Thunderbird now.

  • IPhone Mail app; IMAP; x509 client certificate?

The title says it all really.
I have an x509 client certificate happily installed in my iPhone's keychain. This certificate works correctly in Safari, allowing access to sites which demand it. When I try to collect mail from an IMAP server which also requires a client certificate, it doesn't work.
As far as I can work out, the Mail app is not sending my client certificate when the server requests it to do so. Is this true? Is there a way to configure the Mail app to respond correctly to the server's client certificate request? Any pointers or information welcome!

    I think so.
Actually I think I need to get the App Password for Mail on my phone. It generates the app password and I enter it into the password in the gmail setup for mail.
The problem is that when I hit next on that page, I get the message:
"my name" is already added" and I cannot proceed.
Before doing this setup I deleted my gmail account by tapping the email address and hitting delete in the Mail, Contact and Calendars setup..
but, there is something hiding in my iPhone that remembers my old gmail password (I guess) and doesn't let me proceed.
If I enter my gmail iChain password I get the same thing.
If i do this in airplane mode (no connection to google) i also get the same.
I talked to an apple care person who had me reset all my settings... still the same thing.
I am trying to avoid a gull reset of the iPhone, but that may be in the cards.
Going to go to the apple store and ask there, but i am not hopeful.

  • Problem with Mail app for Gmail account!

    Hi all,
I have a Gmail account synced to my Mail app, I have the latest software version: OS X Mavericks 10.9.2.
The problem started couple of weeks ago, when a new folder under the name "Archive" showed up in the left bar of my Mail app. Thereafter, coming messages started to go there instead of coming to my "inbox" folder. This created quite few issues with new coming messages. Can anyone know how to solve that?
    Thank you in advance.
p.s. I tried to uncheck the box " Gmail.com > settings > Labels > All mail - show in IMAP", this has solved the "archive" issue, as it has disappeared from my Mail right bar. But This has created further issues with coming messages, as I stopped receiving messages at all to my Mail.

    Try another e-mail program.
Airmail is selling pretty well in the App Store and has been reported to work better with G-mail..

  • Mail.app and Gmail POP download problem

I'm in the process of overhauling my entire email world. At the moment, I'm trying ot download all of my Gmail emails into Mail.app using POP. This isn't working well at all.
My Gmail inbox has over 2000 emails and All Mail has over 9000 emails. POP is enabled in Gmail's setting for "all mail", not just "new mail".
But when I go to download everything Mail.app's activity window tells me it's downloading x of 427 messages (and I have WAY more than that in Gmail!). So, what's going on?! Supposedly Gmail downloads in batches, but even if that's true, it's hanging terribly, even while just working with 427 emails.
Does anyone have experience with this? I'm trying to figure out where the problem lies.... on the Gmail side, or the Mail.app side.
    Thanks,
    Scott

Since you do not need the All Mail folder when in Mail, you can select via browser and Gmail setting for POP & IMAP to exclude it entirely.
Do a Google search with Gmail and Advanced IMAP Controls. To enable this particular exclusion, sign on to your Gmail account, click on Settings, then on Labs, and enable advanced IMAP control. Once that is done, you can then click on Labels tab in Settings and make some selections.

  • Mail.app and Gmail Problem

    Hi,
I'm surprised I didn't have better luck in finding the solution to this.
Why is it that when I have a new message in my gmail account, I see "1" in both my Gmail inbox and my mailboxes inbox in the Mail.app apple program?
Can you tell me how to get rid of the gmail folder so that I ONLY have the mailboxes folder?
Right now, when I click my mailboxes inbox --> unread message, it gets rid of the (1) but the (1) still stays on my Gmail --> Inbox.
It is just a nuisance. Thanks.

  • Mavericks Mail App and Gmail folders

I have installed Mavericks on my MBA.  Now in the mail app, when I drag messages from the inbox to a gmail folder, they leave the inbox.  But if I click off of the inbox and then click back on it - they reappear in the inbox.
    Anyone else having this problem?

This is one of the largest bugs in Mavericks’ Mail app, which affects Gmail accounts and Google Apps email accounts. This used to work just fine in previous versions of OS X, so it is a brand new problem in Mavericks:
Mail can’t delete messages from the Inbox unless Google’s “All Mail” folder is visible in Apple Mail. If you try to delete a message from the inbox, the message only disappears temporarily, then reappears moments later. It seems like Apple Mail never removes the “Inbox” label from the deleted messages, so the messages just keep reappearing back in the Inbox over & over again.
The workaround is not a desirable one: It requires the user to make Google's “All Mail” folder visible to IMAP clients (via Gmail's "Settings>Labels” page). However, this workaround is not desirable because of 2 bigger problems:
    (1) Making the “All Mail” folder visible in Apple Mail will suddenly make dozens of gigabytes of emails start taking up valuable hard drive space, because every single email that has ever been archived on Gmail/Google Apps will suddenly be written to the Mac’s hard drive. This can be a real problem on a machine with a small hard drive, such as the MacBook Air. Hiding the “All Mail” folder prevents these messages from taking up valuable hard drive space.  Not to mention that all of these messages are DUPLICATES OF MESSAGES THAT ALREADY APPEAR in other IMAP folders, so showing the "All Mail" folder in Mail is absolutely pointless.
    (2) Whenever the “All Mail” folder is visible, every new message that comes into the “inbox" also shows up as a new message in the “All Mail” folder as well, so new messages appear like they are coming in twice. Also, users are forced to mark their messages as “read" in two locations: the “Inbox" AND the “All Mail” folder.
The ideal solution would be for Mail to operate how it used to operate: Users should be able to delete messages from the Inbox, without having the “All Mail” folder visible in Apple Mail.
Please report this bug to Apple at http://www.apple.com/feedback and hopefully they will fix it in a software update soon!

  • Outgoing email completely lost (Mail app with Gmail account) - Insanely awkward

This is gonna be hard to explain as I have no "evidence" but here's what happened for the 3rd time now in the last 2-3 months on Yosemite using a Gmail account from Mail app.
I write a mail (either reply or new one), send it and it get's completely lost. Can't find it anywhere neither from within the Mail app nor in Gmail's web interface. No error message, nothing. At first I thought I closed my laptop too soon after I hit the send button. I don't even know how to Google this issue, most of the similar issues and resolutions talk about SMTP and/or authentication errors, but again I don't have any error message.
In one instance the message was indeed not delivered, in another one (that just happened to me yesterday) the recipient received the message but I still can't find it.
    Anyone ever experienced the same?
While this is very low amount of occurrence, it is still very very annoying and creates awkward situations in a business context. I always think people who say "I have sent the message, haven't you received it?" are lying because there's no way an email gets lost like this.. And now I'm the one for the third time that asks this the other party.
Anyone knows a way I could trace a message from some log file or anything? Any suggestions, insights are welcome.
    Thanks
    Dan

  • Messages getting corrupted in Mail app with Gmail

I'm having a following recurring problem with Mail app and my Gmail (company) account: At least once a day Mail app database is getting corrupted / out of sync with Gmail account. Mail is showing most of the mails correctly in the UI but some of the new messages are not the right ones but rather copies of older, typically already deleted emails. I.e. Instead of showing the real new msg content (subject, sender, msg body) it is showing in its place an older already deleted msg. How do I know: I go and check what Gmail webmail shows in browser window.
Rebuilding account sometimes works, often not. Usually I have to rebuild, close mail app, start again to get it back in sync. I have tried once deleting all Envelope-index files in Mail Library so that it did a longer rebuild. Helped for few hours and then this started again. Mail app is getting corrupted at least once a day. Very annoying because I cannot trust what I see, but have to check constantly webmail, which I would rather not use as my main tool for mail.
This problem started already with Lion and continued with Mountain Lion.
I guess next step is to delete all my account & setting and re-configure Mail app. Any other tips?

I'll chime in here to say that it affects me too.
Using gmail and mail ActOn to move messages around in mail.app. I'll start trying to see if I can make the corruption happen without using ActOn. I didn't have this problem in 10.4; and I only spent a week with 10.5 so I don't remember it happening then.
How do you identify the messages in the the finder for deleting so they can be re-downloaded? I've been accessing my corrupted attachments through gmail's web interface, so your work around would be easier than mine, assuming there is an easy way to find the right message.
