Mail App Long References Header

I have problems replying to some messages in Mail App. It happens when there are a few recipients on the conversation and the references header has got quite large.
When I view the raw source of the message in my inbox I can see that the references header is quite big, with each reference separated by a line break. My reply to this message is sent okay but gets stuck in our mail server's outgoing SMTP queue. Viewing the sent message's raw source reveals that Mail App has removed all the line breaks in the reference header and sent it all as a single line of well over 1000 characters in length. I believe that this behaviour is not RFC compliant.
Is there a way to stop Mail App from doing this?

  • Getting message reference in Mail.app

This seems like it should be easy but I can't figure it out:
In Apple's Mail app version 2.x I want to create a script to reply to a message, using various text items parsed from its contents in the reply. The target message to be parsed is not in Mail's preview pane (which isn't visible) but in its own window (opened by double-clicking its line item in the main Message Viewer window).
I want to refer to this as a message (so I can use the message class properties in my script), not as a window. The problem is, there seems to be no object container class for a message in its own window, nor a way to reference the content of a window in Mail. The closest I can get is the "message viewer" object, but that contains all the messages in the list.
Surely there is some direct way to reference a message in its own window as a message?!?
So far, the best I can do is assume the Message Viewer contains the target message in its message list, get all the subject strings of the list, & compare them to the title of the stand-alone window (which is titled with the message's subject) looking for a match. This is clumsy & not foolproof, since the Message Viewer may be set to some other mailbox after the message is opened in its own window, there may be more than one Message Viewer open, etc.
Anyone have any ideas on a simpler way to get a reference to a message in its own window?

Again, thanks to all for your suggestions of clever workarounds.
Cyclosaurus mentioned that AS is sometimes a pain; kel that finding workarounds is usually a convoluted process when an app's AS implementation is incomplete, as Apple's often are. <rant> For me, the real pain is that from the beginning, Apple's support for AS has always seemed frustratingly uneven. Thus, we get flashy innovations like Applescript Studio, a greatly enhanced Script Editor, & such, but we still get apps with incomplete, inconsistent AS behavior, & worst of all, a primary AS language guide that hasn't been updated since 1998 or so.
I will confess that I love playing with AS for its own sake. Often, my need for a script's output is less a motivator for writing it than the satisfaction of writing a compact, elegant script that hides complex processes behind simple, English-like statements that make the script's function (almost) as easy to understand by human as by silicon brains. Simply put, a script's esthetics are as important to me as is its practicality.
Because of this, these workarounds, as clever & necessary as they may be, are always going to bother me. GUI Scripting, in Apple's own words, is supposed to be for "applications that either do not have AppleScript support or are only partially scriptable." Instead, it has become a substitute for full AS support in many of Apple's own apps, & I fear that scripters won't demand better from Apple because of it. </rant>
OK, I had to get that off my chest so you folks will know where I'm coming from, but the remainder of my comments will be directed to the specifics of the suggestions:
I know that in theory I can save & restore the clipboard's original contents if I must use it in a script. However, I'm not sure I know a bulletproof way to do this. Each app puts data of various types into the clipboard, but not all apps know how to handle all data types, or at least they didn't in earlier versions of the OS. (That's one reason I've always tried to avoid using it.) What used to happen is an app would grab only data types it understood, so simply putting the clipboard's content into a variable inside a particular app could strip off other data types when restoring it. Is there some 'uber-app' that avoids this, or am I worried about something that no longer occurs?
I've also so far been unsuccessful in using an error handler with keystroke commands like command-c. If there is no selection, I hear a system beep, indicating an error occurs when the command runs, but the routine never executes the 'on error' code if enclosed in a try statement, nor does the script halt with an error if I omit it. I don't know if this is peculiar to Mail, to the keystroke command, to GUI scripting in general, caused by my own ineptness, or what. Any thoughts on this are welcomed.
Regarding Cyclosaurus' idea of using flags, some quick experimentation on my part shows that he is right about the delay being an issue, at least if an IMAP account is involved. To get 100% reliable results, I had to set the delay at over 10 seconds to account for the occasional sluggish response from an IMAP server, making the script painfully slow. There may be a way to test for completion of setting the flagged status & using that instead of a fixed delay, but even so, this approach seems too slow to be of much practical value except for unattended use. Pity, because it is a clever idea.

  • Since iOS 8.1.1 I can no longer use my mail app.

Since iOS 8.1.1 I can no longer use my mail app on my iPad Mini. The mail app opens and updates, however the screen does not respond to anything. Am rather stuck as to what to do. This is the Mail App that comes with the iPad Mini.
I have tried to turn the iPad On/Off all to no avail. I don't really want to reset my iPad as this will cause more trouble than it is worth and will ultimately update the iPad to iOS 8.1.1 anyway. Do any of you have any suggestions that don't involve resetting the iPad ?
    Thanks All

Before you delete your mail accounts, try giving your iPad a reset and force closing the mail app. It may clear up the glitch before you remove and add your info again
    Reset
Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot. No data will be lost.
    Force close an app
Double tap the home button. When you see the app previews on the screen scroll sideways if needed to get the preview in question on the screen. Flick that preview up and off the screen to close the app. Single tap the home button or home screen preview to exit the mode.
If those don't fix it then try to remove and put your info back in.

  • Mail.app no longer working (OS 10.6.8)

Apple MacBook 2G Hz Intel Core Duo 2008 (black)
    OS 10.6.8
Mail.app not opening.....wrong version! There has been no advice on what to do/support or explanation.
For a few months I have no longer been able to open Mail.app.
I have tried a backup older version I had, and this also does not open.
Below is the message I get when trying to open Mail.app vers 4.5 which I had download in March 24th 2011 and subsequently used.
What has happened to Mail.app? that I can no longer use it? And what can be done?

Your version of Mail didn't upgrade properly because you've moved it from its expected location location (to a sub folder you've named "APPLE apps").
Move it back into the HD/Applications folder and apply the 10.6.8 "Combo" update to fix things.

  • Mail App no longer connecting with Hotmail accounts

I have had my hotmail accounts connected to my Mail app on my iMac for years, no problem. As of yesterday the Mail App wil no longer connect with any of my hotmail accounts. It is connecting with my gmail accounts.
The error message I get is: "UNable to receive Mail: There may be a problem with the mail server or network. Verify the settings for account “EKRDL” or try again. The server returned the error: The server “pop3.live.com” refused to allow a connection on port 995"
Hep anyone? What is happening here?

    You're welcome.
How the heck did you figure that one out?!
I didn't, actually. Someone else in this forum (and probably other people in other forums as well), figured it out by looking at the changes introduced by the Mac OS X 10.4.7 Update, and checking his/her own settings accordingly:

  • Mail app no longer "speaks" English

Opened my Mail app today...and it was in Chinese!?
My International System Pref listed Chinese second to English. When I made Danish a second choice, the Mail app opened in Danish.
The Language list in the Get Info window for the Mail app no longer lists English.
Any ideas to fix this? Specifically, and obviously, how to I get English back into the app?
And another thing. The only way to quit this now foreign-speaking app is to Force Quit.
    Grateful for any help.
    tony

    Hi Tony
sounds like the English part of Mail app has oddly vanished - you're going to have to restore it from a backup, another 10.5 mac, or reinstall it from the dvd & then run the 10.5.8 combo update.
If you like tinkering, get Pacifist from http://charlessoft.com which you can use either to grab the Mail app from the Leopard dvd, or extract/replace just the missing language parts, with any luck

  • Mail App no longer working after 2.0 upgrade

I upgraded to 2.0 on my IPhone Edge and now my mail application no longer works AT ALL. If I try to open it, it simply shows me a blank mail screen, waits for a few seconds and then returns to the home screen. Strangely enough, I have been able to send email photos using the camera application.
Email is the most important application for me on the iPhone! Has anyone encountered this problem? Is there a fix available?

I recently stopped by the apple store and have fixed my mail app! The problem as described to me was caused by a installing apps. Turns out that apps can mess with Mail setting in some way and perhaps due to a bad setting or a bad combination of settings my mail application stopped working. The way I fixed it was to do a restore to New Iphone which, unfortunately, wipes everything! But after syncing back up including re-installing all of my apps, mail works again! Of course, I lost all of my notes, various settings, and lots of other stuff. Turns out that a simple restore, since it backs up your phone beforehand (backing up bad settings at the same time) is not the silver bullet but a full restore to new iphone probably often is. Hope this helps others.

  • Mail app no longer responds on iPad 2

    Greetings to all,
Using an iPad 2, my mail app froze up after trying to send an email with 6 pictures (taken with an iPhone 6) attached.
The mail was saved as a draft.  As I tried to (re)open it for editing/finalization, the Mail app stopped responding after freezing on me.
Now the app mail app will open, but without displaying any contents and only for a few second only.  The device then returns to the home screen.
I already tried to turn the device off and back on.  I also reset it.  Finally I proceeded in an attempt to delete the account from which the mail was to be sent and reset the device again... None of the above worked. Mail just seems 'dead', unresponsive. All other apps seem to work fine.
    Any ideas/leads, anyone?!
    Thank you.

I Don't know if the app will stay open long enough to delete the email, but have you tried that?. If you can get to the draft in the preview window on the left side, swipe across the email from right to left to get the delete button to pop up. Then delete the email. I assume, as I'm sure you do by know, that one of the photos is corrupt, or something in that particular draft is causing the problems.
IF your email account is an IMAP Account, use a computer and log into your email in a browser and delete the email from there. IMAP email accounts actions will sync across devices, so that will remove it from the mail app on the iPad as well.

  • Mail app no longer groups threads after turning Push to off

    Hey guys,
My Mail application was grouping related emails/threads together. Yesterday I decided to switch to Fetch as opposed to Push to conserve battery life in general (which it DEFINITELY makes a huge difference in battery life for fetch every 15 minutes versus Push). Any idea what's happening here? I've made sure that the option to group related male is enabled in the Mail settings.
    Thanks!

  • Mail App no longer working

Last night Mail was working perfectly, as it has for many years. This morning not working. Nobody touched my computer. I did not Install or Delete anything. Did NOT make ANY changes to anything at all.
I use DeamHost for my Web Host and E-mail Service. I have contacted DreamHost Tech Support three times today already. I'm in the Chat Room again, but they cannot help me. They have no clue what is wrong.
I've tried their suggestions to Reset the Password several times. Still Mail is not working.
I even set a Different Password for each E-mail Address, but still not working.
    > I can send myself a message from my Mail App and receive it in my Mail App, BUT I cannot receive E-mail from somebody else to my Mail Application.
    > Sent a Message from both Hotmail and Yahoo to my Mail App, but did not receive either message.
I really need to Resolve this Issue soon ...... I depend on my Mail App for All of my Important E-mail (Business, Familly, Friends, Personal)
    Thanks.
    -- Jim

Finalll Resolved the Issue ... !!! As I suspected, it was something incredibly Simple .... !!!
To the right of each E-mail Account in Mail, there was a "Tilde" sign to the right, indicating that there is something wrong with that E-mail Address.
Finally, DreamHost Escalated my Issue to a higher-up Tech Support. After trying many things, most of which I had already been trying with other Techs all day long, finally the Tech told me to right click on the Tilde, and choose
    "Take Account Online"
which worked for five of the accounts, but still had issues with the last account, which finally got working.
So what could have been the cause for this Problem to Happen?
I know that somebody did hack into my E-mail Account, because the first Tech this morning gave me some of the characters to my Password (very long Password), but those characters did NOT match up with my Password!!!
Has anyone run into an E-mai Hack like this one ... ???

My emails no longer show up unless I go to the mail app manually. Never had a problem before this. Help! I have shut off phone I have tried to change the time for how long the mail will show up but nothing is working

Do you mean you don't get notified of new emails automatically (eg. on the Lock Screen)?  This could be because this function is turned off in Settings > Notifications.  It could also be that the email account you use is having problems with its PUSH service, if it offers one.

  • I can no longer receive mail using the mail app? I have to go online instead - why?

    Hej some one,
I can no longer receive mail using the mail app? I have to go online instead - why & what can I do?

Check your smtp preferences in mail.app.
See if mail.app's Connection Doctor has any useful info.  Does it's status indicate all is ok?  When you use it's Show Detail are there any (useful) error messages?

  • OSX 10.5.8 / Mail.app 3.6 - Mail.app No Longer Auto-Checks For New Mail

Since I upgraded to 10.5.8, Mail.app does not appear to be checking automatically for new mail. Regardless of how I set the preference (Every 1 Minute, Every 5 Minutes) it never checks for new mail, and I always have to click on "Get Mail".
I've verified this by opening the Activity WIndow and watching it for more than 5 minutes, with the preference set to 1 and 5 minutes between checks. I don't have time to test the longer intervals right now.
Mail.app is at version 3.6, modified yesterday morning at the same time that I used Software Update to apply the 10.5.8 update (from 10.5.7). I've used Spotlight to make sure that this is the only version of Mail.app on the drive.

Never mind...for the account in question, the "include this account when checking automatically" option was unchecked. Not sure how that happened...

  • Landscape mode no longer working in Mail app.

When I'm using the mail app, and turn the Iphone on it's side, it no longer goes into landscape mode. Other than that, the mail app is still working as it should, and landscape mode is still functional in other apps such as messaging.
I'm at a loss. I really want to use the larger keyboard when emailing. Anyone have any suggestions?

Try resetting your iPhone by pressing the home and sleep buttons until you see the Apple logo, ignoring the slider. Takes about 5-15 secs of button holding and you won't lose any data or settings.
