Mail.app "Looks" Wrong

Suddenly, Mail.app just simply "looks" wrong (running Mac OS X 10.4.8, Mail 2.1 (752/752.2):
1. New message count no longer shows up on Mail's Dock icon
2. When viewing a message with either the preview pane or a separate window, the basic headers are spread way out vertically; large white vertical spacing between header elements. Highlighting the header shows the spaces appear to be separate, empty boxes. Plus, the font that I'm used to seeing the header displayed with seems the same, but different.
2.1 Changing the message viewing type exhibits odd behaviors as well. Changing to raw source looks as expected. Then changing to original format goes back to showing the odd looking headers but with the raw source (in raw source font) following the headers.
3. The new message count numbers in the main viewing list is the normal font, but much larger.
I've removed the Mail caches and preferences. No changes. All disk and privileges are fine. I see no other oddities in any other apps.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance.

Have you recently installed, removed or disabled any
fonts?
OS X fonts, no. I did remove the Classic OS environment from my system, including all those fonts from the System Folder > Fonts directory.
I only recently installed the Classic OS environment. Mail.app was working correctly before Classic was installed. It was working correctly while Classic was installed. While I can't definitively say that Mail.app stopped working correctly immediately upon Classic's removal, it does appear to be coincidental.
For the sake of argument, let's suppose Mail.app did link itself to a Classic font, the question I have is... why? If it worked before Classic, it apparently didn't need any Classic fonts. Why all of a sudden would it need to use them?
Thanks for your response. It did force me to think of other reasons why Mail is showing this odd behavior.

  • Drag and Drop folders or mail in Mail.app drags wrong mail/folder

    Hi,
I noticed mail.app in Maverics 10.9.5 is behaving weird / incorrect / strange with dragging mails.
Eg. If I open up the mailbox window (with the show > button) and try moving a mail inside a folder, I notice it is actually dragging something completely different.
Haven't quite figured out if it's a consistent number of pixels off, but it seems random.
    Anybody else noticing this issue?

    Hello WillyB_UT,
It may help to rebuild the affected mailboxes by highlighting the desired mailbox, then choosing Rebuild from the Mailbox menu.

  • Attachments visible with internet mail, but not with Mail.app

Others have written before about this question, but I don't find a satisfying answer (that would have to come from the Apple people themselves). I received emails that contained several attachments (pdf files), as visible from the size of the messages and the raw source, but only one or two of the attachments showed in the Mail application (version 4.5), and sometimes there was even no body text. I was puzzled and went to the web application of my provider to look at the same messages. EVERYTHING was there! so I decided to transfer the messages again to myself, and miraculously everything was there as well in Mail.app.
Now, is this a weakness of Mail.app, a wrong use of attachments by the sender or what else? Anyway, it is annoying, because I wonder how many attachments I have never seen.
Does anyone know of a solution, please?

Okay, I found the answer if anyone is having the same problem. The Mail POP settings on the Mac for the various Accounts I had were outdated. They were just for Dial-Up. Here is the link for the entire ATT page that deals with High Speed and iPhone connections, and the part in particular that helped me get it going.

Ensure that secure connection (SSL) is enabled and set to port number 995 for POP3.

  • Email replys missing their quote levels from Mail.app

When I get html-formatted email from Mail.app that is a reply to an earlier message, the html version of the email looks fine. However, the text version that is also attached does not include any of the email quote levels.
In other words, if the html version (as seen in Mail.app) looks like this:
On Feb 5, 2010, at 10:31 AM, John Smith:
    | I confirmed with Jack that we will meet at 11
The text version will look like this:
On Feb 5, 2010, at 10:31 AM, John Smith:
I confirmed with Jack that we will meet at 11
I would exped the quoted text to start with "> ".
This does not appear to happen when Mail.app is configured to send messages as Plain text.
This seems like a bug. Is there a way to work around it until it gets fixed?

    Hello Greg.
The Mail.app uses open internet standards for the message header and since there is so much bulk spam, many ISPs have spam filters on the server in addition to antivirus scans for attachments. There are false positives with both just as sometimes occurs with the the built-in spam filter with the Mail.app.
The email client used by the recipient may also have a spam filter or a 3rd party spam filter which can also have false positives.
If this occurs at the incoming mail server for the recipient, messages incorrectly marked as junk are not deleted and moved to a junk mailbox at the server. The recipient should have a preference setting at the server or the ability to mark a message as not junk (along with it is OK to allow future messages to be recieved by the sender's email address) that was incorrectly marked as junk by the spam filter.

  • Gmail emails sending out of wrong account without my knowledge in Mail app

I'm having problems with my Mail app sending out emails out of the wrong Gmail account. This was happening to me in Mountain Lion amongst other Mail app headaches, and I was able to fix it after weeks and weeks of troubleshooting. In Mavericks, the Mail app was mostly working correctly.
When I updated to Yosemite (did a clean install), I thought my Mail app was working correctly. At the end of November, I had some iCloud issues asking for passwords for all my apps. I had to remove iCloud in System Preferences and I added it back on. Anyway, here is my issue:
    1. I have three gmail accounts, let's called them: primary@gmail, subscription@gmail and business@gmail. Over a year ago, I removed the business@gmail from the Mail app because the job was done. The primary@gmail and subscription@gmail were the only active gmail accounts I had in my Mail app.
    2. The beginning of December, I sent some emails out of [email protected] and the emails were in my Sent folder in the Mail app so I knew they were sent out. I didn't receive any responses to my emails and began to wonder. It wasn't until a friend emailed me on my personal@gmail and asked if I was using my business@gmail account again because he said I haven't responded to any of his emails he sent there.
    3. I went into business@gmail in webmail and there were all the emails responses. I forwarded them to my primary@gmail account and in the Mail app I looked at View>Message>Raw Source and I saw that the emails first tried to use my SMTP from primary@gmail but ended up using my business@gmail account which was no longer active in the Mail app. So when the people hit "Reply" to my emails they were sent to business@gmail in webmail.
What bothers me a lot is that I was not notified by the Mail app that the business@gmail SMTP would be used and I deleted the business@gmail from the Mail app over year ago so I didn't even think of it.
I went through my Mail Preferences Account Information and looked at Edit SMTP List. I had all these Gmail SMTPs there so I deleted all of them to start fresh. I left the iCloud SMTP info as it was.
When I tried to add a new Gmail account in System Preferences under Internet Accounts, it would only allow me to add one Gmail account and not another Gmail account. After a few tries, I was finally able to add the second Gmail account. I did go and look at Accounts in the Mail Preferences and I properly assigned the two Gmail accounts to only use the Gmail SMPT that is assigned to it.
    Here are my questions.
Do I need to do anything else to make sure that the Gmail accounts in Mail app settings remain as they are and this doesn't happen again. I've made sure that business@gmail is not in my Previous Recipients or in my Contacts.
I've noticed that the SMTP for iCloud is listed as "None" some of the time and I have to keep selecting iCloud over and over again. I'm hesitate to remove iCloud from my Mail app because I had to do this at the end of November when I had the iCloud password thing happen and I had a big problem getting my Notes data back.
If I remove the Mail.plist in Users Library, would I have to go through all the settings in Gmail webmail and Mail App or would some of the settings be there?
    Any help would be appreciated.

You set it up, and you failed to distinguish between the SMTP servers or assign the correct one to your copy of Mail (it doesn't actually know which is which, you need to inform it)
Open Mail>Preferences>Accounts (NOT Mail>Accounts) and go down to the SMTP server list, choose the correct server for each account then check the box that says 'Use Only This Server' for each account.
This is not automatic, you get to choose and if you don't then this will result.
    Remove the non functional ones.

I have tried deleting the account and it deletes all my contacts.  I have verizon and even using back up assistant, it says the contacts are there but they aren't.  The only way i can find a contact is if I start to type a name in and new text but once i sent the new text, the name disappears and it just shows the number.  Siri nor the address book don't recognize any contacts at all.

I cant find any reciept in my email or in my husbands email.  I am going to attempt to call and speak to someone who can help me because this was not my fault except trying to be normal and update my phone!

Update:  I was able to have the correct photo show in my email as received on my iPad2 by changing a setting on my IMac prior to sending the photo on the email.
On the iMac, I went into iPhoto > Preferences > Email photos using > Mail (in lieu of "iPhoto").  This seems to have corrected the issue.  I'm not sure why.  Now the correct photo shows up when received on my iPad2.

  • Mail app displays the wrong Inbox when you open it.

This problem can be easily reproduced if you have more than one email account configured in iOS 4.x
It should be extremely simple to fix with the next update. I see that this same problem has been mentioned before, but I couldn't update that thread because it's "archived." If you want Apple to fix this, please report the issue to Apple using one or more of the links below:

    Here's what I submitted...
    Subject:
Simple software design issue in Mail app.
    Feedback Type:
    Design/Ease of Use
    Comments:
Thanks for your work on making iOS better and better with each update! There is no option to provide general iOS feedback, so I'll submit this under "iPhone" and "iPod." I'm currently using the latest iOS (4.3.1).
The native Mail app in iOS has had the Unified Inbox feature since iOS 4.0, which is very useful. However, there is a minor design flaw that could be easily resolved with a software update.
    My setup:
I have 3 Exchange accounts on my device (Hotmail, Gmail[Default], Work). The Hotmail Inbox is empty at least 98% of the time because my Gmail account periodically downloads the messages. The only reason I have the Hotmail account entered on my device is to make sure I can see a message in "All Inboxes" even before my Google account retrieves it. On my device, the Gmail account is set as default for Mail and Contacts.
    The problem:
I never intentionally select the Inbox for the Hotmail account because it should almost always be empty. I would simply view "All Inboxes." Still, half the time I open the Mail app, it shows the empty Hotmail Inbox. This is very annoying!
I finally figured out how to reproduce it consistently:
(must have more than one account configured)
    1) Launch the Mail app and back-up to the screen that shows the list of accounts / Inboxes (I usually try to leave it here when I'm done, hoping to see that screen the next time I open Mail).
    2) Without selecting a specific account or Inbox, push the Home button to exit the Mail app.
    3) Kill the Mail process from the multi-tasking menu.
    4) Open Mail again
Mail will show whichever Inbox comes immediately after "All Inboxes", even if it's not your default account. In my case, it starts in the empty Hotmail Inbox every time...a folder that I never intentionally select. Each time, I have to go back to the list and tap "All Inboxes."
So, if I leave Mail on the root screen before killing the process, it consistently displays the wrong Inbox the next time I open it. If I select an Inbox or "All Inboxes," it will remember that selection and show me that screen the next time I open Mail.
    What it should do:
When Mail doesn't know which Inbox to display, it should...
    A. Start on the root screen with the list of accounts and Inboxes (preferred option).
or B. Start in "All Inboxes" (secondary preference).
or C. Start in the Inbox of the default account (not preferred, but better than showing an empty/unused Inbox).
    Thank you!

    Try this...
    Launch the Mail app.
Navigate to the "Mailboxes" page (the page that lists all of your accounts).
Tap "Edit" in the top right corner.
Scroll down to the bottom section of the page, titled "ACCOUNTS".
Drag the triple-bars on the right to reorder the accounts listed. The first account listed will be the one that the app launches to.
Hope this helps, I went crazy trying to figure that out and it worked for me.

  • What's wrong with Gmail & Mail.app (IMAP)

I recently set up Mail.app for Gmail using IMAP. Since then I've noticed that my inbox in Mail.app and in Gmail on the web is always out of sync. For example, I have one message listed in my inbox in Mail.app right now, and there are eight still in the inbox in Gmail. Also, I have several folders in Mail.app (corresponding to labels in Gmail). When I move a message from the inbox in Mail.app to one of these folders, and then try searching for it 30 minutes later, it doesn't appear in the folder or anywhere in Mail.app. If I go to Gmail on the web an search for it, however, it shows up there.
The irony of it all is that I finally decided not to renew my MobileMe subscription and switch over to Gmail. I'm beginning to regret that decision.
Is anyone else having these problems? If not, maybe it has something to do with my configuration?

Back in 2006 I've worked in a minor ISP hosting a few hundreds of e-mails and dealing with SMTP communication between servers... And often I had to analyse logs to see what has gone wrong, and it was never the same issue.
Each big company have their own SMTP standards, built on top THE SMTP standard, to solve their own issues in their own ways, and sometimes communication between them just break for whatever reason. It's something being constantly updated and it's hard to keep track of things.
I'm just supporting *Jon Markle*'s words on this issue - it is pretty random and there's no single point at fault to blame.

  • PDF quick look in mail app

Somehow, the quick look (or quick preview) of PDF files has gone corrupt on mail app. When I receive an email with a PDF attached, I used to be able to tap on the file and read it right away. Now I can't!!! Weird characters appear, as if I try to open the file as text.
Now I have to open in iBooks to be able to read it!! It's quite annoying, and it is NOT quick anymore!!
    Anyone experienced something like this???
    Thanks!

Try fully closing your mail app, then rebooting your iPad.
To fully close the mail app, go to your home page, then double tap your home button to bring up the most recently used apps (task bar) on the bottom row.  Find your Mail App icon in that row and hold your finger on it until all the apps start to jiggle.  You'll see a minus sign on the upper left side of the app.  Touch it and your mail app will fully close.  Touch your home button once to stop the apps from jiggling and then again to return to your home page.
Then, reboot your iPad.  Press and hold BOTH the power and home buttons at the SAME time for at least 10 seconds (ignore the red slider) until the Apple Logo appears and your iPad will restart.
Once it comes back up, open your mail app and the email with the PDF and see if you can view it correctly.

  • Mail.app Is Showing Wrong "From" Name

    I'm having a heck of a time with Mail.app.
The latest bug is that in the list of incoming mail, it occasionally shows the wrong From name. When I open it up, it shows the correct name.
    Any ideas?
And I still can't get it to send mail from the proper email address. I has one it likes, and will not deviate.

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data before proceeding.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
              Envelope Index
              ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Typically, the process takes a few minutes, but it may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. In that case, you may be able to speed things up by temporarily adding your home folder to the Privacy list in the Spotlight preference pane. Remove it when Mail has finished importing.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • Wrong version of mail.app after time machine restore

So the hard drive on my iMac was complaining this morning and required a restore from Time Machine, which appeared to go well. I chose the most recent backup (yesterday) and Adobe Bridge / PS crashed / gave an error on first boot. Aside from that the only issue I'm having is with the mail app where it says version 4 cannot be used with 10.6.1.
It seems odd that Time Machine hasn't backed up the application in the correct version (possible bug?) despite having a long list of 10.6 backups since I upgraded however, more importantly, how do I get the right version installed please?

I am having the same problem. I am restoring my HD from a Time Machine backup and I am getting mail.app 4.0 instead of 4.1. I looked in Time Machine and found that 4.1 was not backed up.
I have a separate backup copy I made with SuperDuper in the "Erase, then copy...." mode. I looked and it has mail.app 4.1.
To save time, I restored my HD with SuperDuper in the "Smart Update" mode. This only looks for changes to make the disks the same. When it finished I still had mail.app 4.0 on my HD.
When I tried to find out why it hadn't updated to mail.app 4.1, I checked the Date Created and Date Modified on both mail.app 4.0 and 4.1. The dates on 4.0 and 4.1 are all the save, Friday, July 24, 2009 2:20 AM.
Apparently Time Machine is not backing up the new version of mail.app because it doesn't think it has changed with the Date Created and Date Modified being the same. SuperDuper in "Smart Update" also doesn't think there is a change so it doesn't copy mail.app 4.1.
I have now restored my HD with SuperDuper in the "Erase, then copy...." mode so that I am sure that it copies all the files. I now have mail.app 4.1 and mail works again.
Apple needs to give mail.app 4.1 newer Date Created and Date Modified dates.
The only way I can overcome this problem in back up and restore is to delete my Time Machine backups and start a new backup to be sure mail.app 4.1 is backed up.
I will also do an "Erase, then copy...." with SuperDuper on all three on my Macs to be sure I have complete backups.

  • Pop-up looking for mail.app

Hey, I stupidly deleted my mail.app instead of just disabling it... now I keep getting a message asking me to find the app. it's gone. what can i do to get my macbook to stop asking about it?

    Wrong...
When a client pops the servers first copies the
entire mailbox to a .pop file and then the client is
supplied with the mail that resides inside this .pop
    file
Well, not exactly. How the server operates internally to progress (for instance) from the Authorization to the Transaction state is not defined by the POP standard, nor does POP require that any actual message content be available for the server to respond to common transaction state commands except the RETR one. In fact, rfc 1939 strongly discourages the server from responding with more than the minimum information these commands require.
Because of this, I suspect there may be more than one timeout value involved in Mail.app -- for instance, one for the server indicating it is in the authorization state, another for the time it takes to establish lockout after the authorization transaction is complete, & so on.
IOW, it may not be possible to discuss how to change "the" timeout interval without discussing how POP works to determine where the timeout that is the problem occurs.
