  • HT2954 unable to attach anything in mail app mac os x

When using the mail app in mac os x 10.8.2 I can't attach any files to an e-mail.  When I press the paper clip, I get no action, Attach a file as a menu choice does nothing either.  Help!

As stated in my original post, looking at the contents of the disc shows nothing at all. No files, folders or anything, just a blank white space.
The MacDrive/MediaFour solution, also stated in my post, from what I can tell that's a 3rd party program is it not? The website shows it as a $49 program.
I ran the installation for WinXP with SP2, it installed fine, I then put the OSX DVD into the drive for the drivers. Literally. No other programs were run or installed, as soon as XP was loaded I took the disc out and stuck the OSX disc into the drive. Currently no network card drivers so, can't update via the internet.
I have since then deleted the partition, recreated it, re-ran the installation of XP and same thing.
I'll have to say, I prefer the beta version of Boot Camp better for having made a driver disc. If they left it that way but gave the option to save to USB it would have been much better.
I think I know where the old Boot Camp driver CD is so will try that when back at work on Thursday.
I have to ask about the MediaFour/MACDrive solution though. I have seen a few posts like this and someone always brings that up as a solution. Is it supposed to be on the computer or is it indeed a 3rd party program you purchase? Because I didn't see it as part of the directions for BootCamp and can't see Apple producing something that requires 3rd party software to work.

  • Send/Receive Difficulties with Mail.app/.Mac Webmail

I had sent a short test message to myself, using a .Mac account on Mail.app, to see if I could duplicate an error reported by another user. That message 'black holed' itself, leading to the following series of similar messages and results. For purposes of explanation:
    a) messages were sent on the same account from either Mail.app or .Mac Webmail
    b) "OK" means that messages showed up normally in Sent boxes and in Inboxes in both locations.
    c) "Black Hole" means that messages showed up in Sent boxes in both locations, but showed up nowhere else. Ever.
    d) "Junk" means that the message was sent, showed up in Sent boxes, but was slotted into Mail.app's Junk ƒ. In all cases, those messages were then moved to the Inbox and marked as "Not Junk".
    Message results:
    #1 — from Mail.app — Black hole
    #2 — from Mail.app — Junk
    #3 — from Mail.app — Black hole
    #4 — from Webmail — Junk
    #5 — from Webmail — Black hole
    #6 — from Mail.app — Junk
    #7 — from Mail.app — Junk
    #8 — from Webmail — OK
    #9 — from Mail.app — Junk
    #10— from Webmail — OK
    #11— from Mail.app — OK
    Two questions or concerns:
    a) 3 of 11 messages, from both Mail.app and Webmail, simply disappeared. They have message ID's, are present in the sent folders, but never showed up.
    b) Mail.app's Junk filtering insisted, for a long time, on slotting those incoming message to the Junk filter (and still does, btw, on an intermittent basis). No changes have been made to Junk preferences or setups and this had not occurred in the past.
Would appreciate some of the mail gurus taking a look at this and seeing if they can find any common threads or causes. There may be more than one thing in play here, of course. TIA for any assistance.

I'm curious about the Junk (result "d" & question "b") aspects of your tests. Can you confirm that:
    1) You do not have any custom rules that use the "Message is Junk Mail" test -- IOW, that the Junk Filter is the only rule that is using this test?
    2) The messages to yourself all were sent to a "self" address that is in your Address Book app (typically, but not necessarily, the "me" card)?
    3) For all/some result "d" messages they were marked as Junk?
I ask because I have intermittently seen Mail apparently ignore other default tests in the Junk Filter (particularly "Sender is not in my Address Book" when the sender is me) & evaluate the 'junkiness' of messages just on the "Message is Junk Mail" test. It has been difficult for me to evaluate David's methods for correcting this in my case because of the extremely intermittent nature of the behavior: in some cases new "me-to-me" received messages are immediately marked as Junk after removing the files David indicates, in others a few weeks later one or two are while others aren't.
In every case (so far) that some are identified as junk, training with the "Not Junk" button on a couple of messages seems to end the occurrences, as if the LSM filter has to learn they are not junk independently of the other tests.
Because of this, I would appreciate your posting to this thread any related results that occur long after you try David's fix(es), if you do try them, even if they are rare or inconsistent.
    Thanks.

  • Mail app. mac pro

    hey
By mistake I throw out may e-mail application to trash on mac pro, because of virus, how I could get the mail app back, mean is there a download version of it? Or if I have to reinstall the OX system again?
    please help me
    thank you

Perform a custom install from the Mac OS X 10.5 disks and install only that component if possible; if not, use Pacifist to install it. In either case, rerun the combo updater for your Mac OS X version afterwards.

  • Can't send mail with powerbook G4, mail.app, mac OS 10.5.8 and verizon smtp server.

We just made the switch to Verizon.
Setting up Mail.app with my relatively new MacBook Pro (and OS 10.8.4) was very smooth.
Not so with my wife's old PowerBook G4 running 10.5.8, which she inherited from my daughter.
It seems to set up fine, using the same settings for the servers as on the MBP (it has to be done manually), but it is unable to send mail (via the verizon smtp server). The Connection Doctor thing does not have any trouble finding the servers and connecting.
I get the "The sender address [email protected] was rejected by the server smtp.verizon.net." message.
These settings work when sending email from this verizon account from her iphone, or from my MBP.
I successfully set up my .me email account on the G4 and that was able to send mail.
Couldn't find anything online to shed light on this. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

    Your asking peers here.
You didn't say which settings you were trying to use.   Lots of people are posting about switching over to the latest EMAIL settings which include pop.verizon.net and smtp.verizon.net as the servers.  However it has invariably been a  mistake they are making or a special requirement of there DEVICE such as a shutdown and restart.
You should take a look at http://verizon.com/emailsettings .  There are both the manual settings and some automatic trouble shooters that may be able to setup your device.

  • 'Mail app' + .Mac + address book

Is there a way to add an e-mail address to the .Mac mail address book without adding my entire address book as it would if I did a sync?

When I go to .Mac>address book> I get a page with a the address book icon & the double round arrow that reads ".Mac Address Book Synchronize Contacts". Below that is an OK button.
I don't even get the Preferences for the Address Book that you're speaking of. Might be that this is a new .Mac account and the addresss has never been used?
Are you talking about adding a contact button that might pop up when you receive and e-mail? As does Gmail & Yahoo when you're opening mail? There is a button that allows you to add that contact to your address book.
Why I asked was that it appears I'm not getting messages from friends or family to the new .Mac account that I did in the old account. In Gmail & Yahoo mail you can add a contact one by one without importing your entire address book. I wanted their addresses there so that the new .Mac mail account wouldn't mistake their addresses as Spam.
Guess maybe what I'm trying to do isn't possible?

  • Mail.app prefs. fail to change location of Downloads folder.

I recently migrated my mail from Eudora to Mail.app (Mac Pro, OS 10.6.8). I usedthe Mail.app Preferences to change the location of the Downloads (i.e. attachments) folder from the default location (Users>Library>Mail Downloads) to the subfolder in the OS Downloads folder that I used in Eudora. Despite this my attachments still end up in the default location. Help please!
As an aside I would be running straight back to Eudora were it not for the death sentence pronounced by the absence of Rosetta in Lion. Here are some comments that I recently posted to the TidBits newsletter where there is an excellent article by Adam Engst on making the changeover to Mail.app:
The major surprise for me was how really crude the Mail.app experience seems after 14 years of using Eudora. The way Mail handles mailboxes has been a source of major frustration. With Eudora I found it convenient to create separate Eudora Folders for my three accounts, each accessible via an alias of the respective settings file in the dock.  That way I could locate an item that I need much faster than when the mailboxes (and their subfolders) for all three accounts are crammed into a single sidebar - especially as mailbox folders enclosing subfolders will not open with a double click, precise clicking on the triangle is required.  The ability to access mailboxes from the Eudora Mailbox menu - drilling down through successive subfolders, if required - is vastly superior.  Similarly Mail's procedure for moving messages and/or creating rules is really primitive compared to Eudora's facility to create destination mailboxes as part of a single seamless process.  Given that development of Eudora ground to a halt in 2006 one could be forgiven for expecting a lot better from Apple's in-house e-mail client in 2011.

    Mike,
Where in the Sidebar to the Mail window do you see any Sent mailboxes? Is there one beneath the Inbox when viewing at home? Check and report the settings at Mail Preferences/Accounts/Mailbox Behaviors, please. If you have to do this when at home, I understand. There is a way to instruct Mail to use a particular folder for a particular purpose that probably needs to be done on the home computer, but I would like to know those preference settings before proceeding with that.

  • Does Mail.app support multiple mail profiles similar to Outlook?

My wife an I use one user account for our iMac. We are new to Apple as a whole. Though I am loving every minute of it, I don't want to be cornered. She and I find it a pain to have two user accounts when all we do is surf the internet and use iTunes. So, while logged on to a single user account, is it possible for I to open Mail.app that has my gmail, work, etc. and her to open Mail.app with her yahoo and the like? I want to use Mail.app if I can, I like the simplicity of it and hopefully fully integrated with my iPad and our upcoming iPhones.
Thanks and hopefully this hasn't been posted before (though I'm sure it has). I found a few things on the net close to what I was looking for, but the posts just dropped off before I could get my answer. . . go figure.
    Thanks everyone,

My 10.8.3 update did not install properly citing an 'Unknown Error'. Now, my Mail and Mac App Store aren't working. What went wrong and how do i fix it ?

I tried this and still have the same problems. If I open Address book or the Mac App Store I get the library rebuild popup and a hang. I created a fresh user and then things are better apart from the printing issue. Its clearly some 3rd party software issue but the crash logs are meningless to me. I used the excellent Etre check app from http://www.etresoft.com/etrecheck so I have a list of what is being loaded and can compare clean and crashed user info but as I cant work out which of the startup items, launch agents, launch daemons etc that  are causing the problem.
I have eliminated Dropbox, Mac Keeper and Witness, and it isnt related to my exterrnal LED cinema dispay or my external thunderbolt drives, or any USB devices if thats any help to anyone else. Info from Etrecheck follows -

  • Mac Mail.app V.2.0.5 with OSX server's email don't play well sometimes

I have my own web, FTP, and email server. (OSX 10.4.4 Server). I've been managing my own server services since AppleShare V.6 .So I've done this a few times. I have set up an account for myself "nino" on the server that people email to, you know "[email protected]".
On my laptop I have Mac Mail.app set to log onto my server, via the internet, and to get and send emails. Sounds pretty normal right? Yep, it is except four or five times since I updated the server to 10.4.4., last December, Mac Mail.app simply stops receiving email from my account. Now I'm a pretty busy guy and email is my main source of communications. Plus get a healthy amount of junk mail. So I hear that familiar beep at least twice an hour - usually a lot more. I can always when this tell when this anomaly happens when two hours go by without something arriving in Mac Mail.app.
The catch here is the server is still accepting mail for my account. I can go to web mail, which I have set-up and working fine, and new emails are there! Mac Mail.app simple stops accepting them.
    I have tried:
    restarting both machines
changing the password to my account, on both machines
actually deleting my account from Mac Mail.app, restarting and creating my account again
Nada.... I can see emails adding up in web mail....grrrrrr.
The only way I know to resolve this is to, gulp, delete my account on the Server and set it up again. This seems to work but unless I've answered messages in web mail their gone! Poof. I do like to keep good records by saving and organizing business related emails. So when this happens I'm screwed.
    Any thoughts?

  • Mac Mail.app download problems

    Hello,
I think I have tried everything.  I am currently trying to do the simplest tax ever.  I want my mail downloads to go to my downloads folder that I see in my downloads folders, the same folder safari does fine downloading too.  However when I click to download something in my mail like a photo or pdf.  It pops up my "Mail Downloads finder" so I went into the mail preferences and changed it to a different folder.  However, it changed nothing.  It sill downloads to the same folder hidden away in a library.
Not sure what to do, about to go to the apple store and ask them whats up.
Anyone have any other advice for me.

I think I've figured this out. I still have to "sneak up" on my .MAC prefs... but they seem to be working now. In addition, I deleted the Mail.app plist files, which solved my Mail problem.

  • Gmail ... IMAP ... Mac Mail.app ... Mavericks ... SOLUTION -1

    hi all,
hopefully this will give you enuff info to figure out what to do (if anything), but i urge you to read thru the links below to see if you are experiencing the same issues or not, & if so, what to do about them.
    THE BACKGROUND INFO:
i've been using the Mac's Mail.app pretty exclusively since its inception, and with Gmail's IMAP option since mid-2009. the settings have always stayed & worked well...
    • on Gmail.com > Settings > Forwarding & POP/IMAP >
        - IMAP Enabled
        - Auto-Expunge Off
        - Move Deleted Messages to the Trash
        - Folder Size Not Limited
    • also on Gmail.com > Settings > Labels >
        - Only the Inbox, Sent, Drafts, Spam, & Trash System Labels CHECKED to "Show in IMAP"
    • then in the Mail.app > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors >
        - i had everything CHECKED & all the dropdown options set to "One Month Old"
--note: a year or so ago, i had to UNcheck the option to Store Drafts on server due to a hideous multiplication of draft messages showing up in the Trash
    • also in Mail.app > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced >
        - the IMAP Path Prefix was always "[Gmail]" to allow folders to show properly in the Mail.app
    • and lastly in Mail.app >
        - made sure the Sent, Drafts, Spam, & Trash folders/labels were properly mapped via the Mailbox menu > "Use This Mailbox For" option
...and i've always kept 'local' mailbox folders for archiving old emails in the "On My Mac" section in addition to keeping more current emails for reference in the "Gmail" section.
    THE INITIAL PROBLEM:
after upgrading my Mac to Mavericks OS 10.9, i started noticing that any email i would delete or move from my inbox kept re-appearing in my inbox after changing views (like going to another mailbox then back to the inbox).
of course this drove my OCD crazy, & thus began the research. i've read a LOT about this issue from official sources to user discussions and have pieced together a procedure that seems to be working (for the most part) for me.
    THE RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS:
a lot of people, tek/industry people, & blogs are pointing to these webpages as good summaries of issues & fixes (yes, there are SO many more, but i personally found these to be the most helpful in my quest)...
              http://tidbits.com/article/14219
              http://www.wired.com/gadgetlab/2013/10/mavericks-issues-and-fixes/?viewall=true

              http://www.macobserver.com/tmo/article/making-gmail-and-os-x-mavericks-mail-play -well-together
    THE DISCLAIMER:
of course, if you aren't greatly affected by the Mail/Gmail wonkiness, then it might be worth waiting another week or two (or 3 or 4...) & keep your eyes on further reports from these sites (links above or others you may like better) in case Apple &/or Google pushes an update to remedy the situation. likewise, if you do make these changes, it would still be a good idea (imho) to keep up'to'date in case such pushes do come out & affect these changes too. ugh ;-)
    THE OUTCOME:
the below process, for me, has been SUCCESSFUL in every aspect except one...
    THE LAST PROBLEM:
whenever i move a message from the gmail inbox (or any other gmail imap folder/label) to a local folder in the "On My Mac" section, it moves it just fine, but then it keeps a copy in the gmail "All Mail" folder/label, when i would want it deleted from gmail.
unlike when i "delete" a message, where gmail appropriately moves that message to the trash box, in this situation it simply strips the message of "any" label, and thusly it stays in the All Mail. so if anybody can amend this with a fix for that, we should be all set :-)
but aside from that last issue, the below procedure has brought back my Mail.app program to use Gmail as "I" believe it normally should work, and has always worked pre-Mavericks.
THE PROCEDURE (assuming all your settings are set like mine were as listed above):
go to gmail.com in Safari (or other web browser) > Log in > Settings > Labels > and check "Show in IMAP" for the "All Mail" system label (which was previously a no-no, but now a yes-yes).
also on that same page, you will need to UNcheck the "Show in IMAP" option for Drafts. and then slide over and for BOTH the Drafts & Spam labels, click the "show if unread" options.
then go to each & every one of your custom "Labels" (you know them as Mailbox Folders). they will all start with "[Gmail]/foldername". click on each and remove the "[Gmail]/" leaving ONLY your custom folder name.
once done, click on your Inbox to get you out of the settings area.
now you will need to go thru ALL of your folders/labels (i know... big ugh!) to fix the labels attached to all the emails inside them ;-)
click a folder/label to reveal all the emails inside it.
click the checkbox in the header row of buttons/options that will cause all emails on that page to be selected/checked.
then, IF you have more emails than what fits on that page (in other words, if you have more than one page of emails in this folder as indicated by the "1-###" and page arrow buttons at the top right), then you will see a new small row that sits above the list of emails that says "All ### conversations on this page are selected. Select all ### conversations in "Folder/Label Name" - you WILL NEED TO CLICK this text link!!!
once you have, the sentence will change to "All ### conversations in "FolderName" are selected" - do NOT click the "Clear selection" link next to that.
next, click on the "Label As..." button in the header row of button/options - the icon looks like a price tag of sorts.
then in the resulting popup box that lists all your folders/labels, you will want to make sure ALL checkboxes are UNchecked EXCEPT the single folder/label that these emails are in. note: some of them may or may not have dashes instead of checkmarks in the boxes - you will need to click it to check it and then click it again to get it UNchecked & UNdashed.
after you've got only the one label checked that should be checked, then click the APPLY word at the bottom of that little popup box. note: if all the selected emails are labled correctly, then you won't see the "Apply" option & you can simply move on to the next folder.
if you get a dialog confirmation box pop up asking if you are sure you want to continue... click OK.
then WAIT! this may take a while depending on how many emails it's affecting and how fast/reliable your internet speed/connection is. when you see the "Loading..." notification at the very top of the page change to "All conversations have been removed from (and it lists them all)", then you can move on & do that same procedure (steps 5-13) to fix another folder/label.
WHEN DONE WITH ALL THAT, you can exit your browser.
now go to the Mail.app > Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > and remove the "[Gmail]" text from the "IMAP Path Prefix" field.
then go to the Mail.app > Mail menu > Preferences > Accounts > Mailbox Behaviors tab and if the Store Drafts on Server option is checked, UNcheck it.
then close the Mail.app Preferences window to get the option to SAVE that change!
now go to the Mailbox Menu > Synchronize > Gmail, in case it hasn't started doing that on its own.
then open the Window Menu > Activity, so you can see when it's done synchronizing. this may take a while if you've got a lot of mail. according to some, it took a day! so, just kick back & leave it alone till then.
    THE END FOR NOW:
hopefully this helps other folks that were setup like me & want to keep it working that way. and yeah, again, if anybody knows how to fix the last problem described above, please let us know.
    .peace.:.jason.

    hi Dean Suhr,
i just went back & re-read my posts... i find no where that i said anything about dragging emails into the ALL MAIL folder. i mentioned the issues with dragging messages into "any other folder that i've created" from either the INBOX or "any other folder that i've created".  it copies instead of moves the message. but ONLY Mac Mail does this. the iOS Mail app does NOT do this - it moves as it should move.
as far as what you said "who cares what Gmail says the labels are"... well... I do :-)
there are occasions where i need to utilize the web browser gmail interface, and i want it to be correctly synced.
i don't think it's unreasonable to want that, as that's how it's been for YEARS, till now, AND that's how it still is with iOS 7.
besides, what happens if i get a different device/computer and need to add the same account - i imagine it will not sync up correctly if gmail has labels on messages that it shouldn't.
fortunately for me, i don't have quite as many messages & accounts as you; it only takes aprox 30 minutes for mail to sync up after i started over with it.

    Safari ▹ Preferences ▹ Extensions
Turn all extensions OFF and test. If the problem is resolved, turn extensions back ON and then disable them one or a few at a time until you find the culprit.
If you wish, you may be able to salvage the malfunctioning extension by uninstalling and reinstalling it. That will revert its settings to the defaults.
If extensions aren't causing the problem, see below.

Hello, can't see some letters from my Gmail box in Mail.app in MAC OS 10.8.5.

The solution was to remove all versions of Acrobat Pro and reinstall Acrobat Pro XI. I still had the download file in my Time Machine backup. That's a good thing, since the download link from the order listing on the Adobe website under my account would not work.
The problems don't occur with version 11.0.0. I got the work done, now I'm updating to 11.1.0 and will report if they came back.
