Mail app newbie

Just switched to OSX last week, from OS9... I was using the ancient Claris Emailer previously.
Needless to say, I'm a bit frustrated (and stumped) on a few things. I have everything mostly working, but the app seems to be missing a few "features" I wish it had.
Question 1:
I prefer to see the mail list WITHOUT the split screen. Otherwise, merely clicking on an email shows me content I don't wish to even SEE (spam etc).
So I open up a window to view the mails instead...
is there any way FROM the email window I'm viewing to "cycle" to "next email" and "previous email" in the list with a keystroke? I typically dump all the crap, then want to "review/scan" the incoming and determine which needs dealing with first.
I know, I can screw with the split screen every time, but I'd just rather leave it off, forever.
Question 2:
When replying to an email, is there any way you can have the REPLY window automatically come up as a NEW window, instead of just replacing the incoming mail text I'm replying to? I often need to refer repeatedly to the original when forming replies.
(I don't care to quote 5 page emails in full and then edit the crap out of them to the 6 lines that require response)
I see that if I have the split screen open, clicking "reply" brings up the reply in a new window, but it doesn't if I have a separate window open for the incoming mail I'm reading.
Question 3:
I always use plain text. How does one go about verifying an URL I type in an outgoing email before I send it? (Besides copy/paste to the browser). I used to be able to do this in os9 with cmd-click-- is there a keystroke for this or do I need some little add-on shareware?
Thanks for any tips, tricks or ideas anyone can give.

I don't understand why you would need to "verify" a URL in an email you're sending; presumably you already know it's good, otherwise there would be no point in including it.
Actually, I'm a week-old newborn to OSX, and I haven't hardly begun to get my workflow tweaked to where I'm actually useful, so I'm sure I'm missing things.
I do custom work for clients. Often I need to send in-progress images and certainly pictures of the final work to the client. Since sending images with email doesn't always work on the other end, I simply upload pictures or pages to my website and direct them there.
So what I'm typing is either a direct url to a particular image, or page... and not all of these are for public access. I'm trying to master what I used to do in PS 7 in PSCS4, thankfully the text editor I use and fetch both required next to nothing for a relearning curve... but navigating stuff as I once did in the Finder is netherworld all its own.
So far, I'm not sure where there's access to any particular url I can just snag and drag into an email... since I edit things on the local drive and upload via Fetch. I mostly know where the page or image is...so I just manually type it. And then I want to CHECK it. I may mis-type the name, number or miss a directory in the hierarchy on occasion, so it always pays to check.
It's poor form to email a busted url... even worse, if it happens in a newslist post!
Like I said, I'm feeling my way through new workflow processes here. In the past, I had some extension (IceTee I think) that would identify any email and automagically open the the email app and start a new addressed email... and likewise Identify an Url and get the browser and go to the page. All by a simple cmd-click anywhere on the Url (no need to select the whole thing).
Remembering that little extension, I went looking, and found this:
http://web.sabi.net/nriley/software/
So now it's called ICeCoffEE...
And it's a beta... but at this point with everything being a "test" all day every day, I'm a willing guinea pig.
It did work in Mail.app, so I solved this question myself
(did not work in this edit window, but I checked the url in preview mode... it's a very old habit!
I know it might not make sense to some people... but when you're putting urls into plaintext messages, or receiving urls in them, cmd-click is easier than *+copy/find browser/paste/enter+*
And yes, I still hand-code *gasp!*
Maybe one day I'll move into the 21st century there as well.

  • Help a newb with setting up Mail.app

Im trying to set up my Mail app with my email account hosted with my shared hosting service.
Ive used mail.app before...but i seem to be running into some issues.
Ive used mail.app with .mac and mobileme email addresses and they functioned properly,my issue is that using the [email protected] doesnt seem to work so smoothly.
For example when i send a message in Mail.app it stores it only in the Mail folder in Mail but in a new folder in webmail called Sent Messages.
I use IMAP for Mail.app and with my iPod Touch (which uses the same EMAIL Address).
When i send messages using the ipod touch i dont get the excess mailboxes and the sent messages/deleted messages etc get routed to the properly mailbox in the ipod touch and Webmail.
These are the extra mailboxes i get when using Mail.app
They show up in both Mail.app and my Webmail.
SOO my question is; How do i properly set it up so i only have these mailboxes:
    INBOX
    SENT
    DRAFTS
    TRASH
and that they all tie to gether?
for example; send a message in Mail.app it goes into the Sent folder on both Mail.app and Webmail instead of a bogus Sent Mail folder automatically created.
    Any advice please????

From Apple's web page on Exchange with Snow Leopard:
    Infrastructure requirements
    • Update Rollup 4 for Exchange Server 2007 Service Pack 1.
    • Exchange Web Services (EWS) must be enabled. EWS is on by default in Exchange 2007.
    • Exchange AutoDiscover must be turned on for automatic setup.
    • Snow Leopard uses SSL over port 443 to connect to EWS.

  • Another SMTP issue w/ mail.app from a newbie (works on iPhone & other Mac)

I've recently switch from PC to a new iMac 27" QC i5 with 10.6.2 and Mail 4.2. Thursday, March 18th to be exact. I set up my mail.app that night and everything was peachy until Tuesday, March 23rd. I can receive just fine. Just can't send. The SMTP server is listed as Offline.
On the other hand, I can successfully send and receive mail with the exact pop/smtp settings on my iPhone 3G and my PC. Gmail works fine on mail.app too. I've called my webhost 3xs and Apple 3xs. My ISP is not blocking the ports. I've used about every variable possible and tried using Thunderbird as well. Everything works fine with Gmail but not my web host. My gut says it's something somewhere within the computer. Hosts files, etc. I don't know. What convinces me of this is that I had my friend set up my email account on his mac and everything worked as normal. He was able to send and receive, yet I still couldn't.
Any ideas? I wanted to ask before I was forced to reistall the OS.
Apple has had me delete the mail folder in Library, delete the plist file, etc. This has to be somewhere else.
Thanks in advance for any tips, help or guidance.

Same exact problem for me! I can send through my SMTP server with no issues from my iPod Touch & Windows devices but on both iMacs (Mail 4.2 (1077)) I cannot send.
Have been on the phone multiple times with my ISP but no luck. Have tried hard setting ports, turning on SSL, deleting and recreating the account, verifying my password isn't locked and nothing.
There is no other explanation with the other devices working. This must be a client issue.

  • My mail app will not open

I recently copied the files from one of my macs to the other. They are both running 10.7.5. But since I copied the files, I am no longer able to open my mail application. It just bounces around for a minute and then gives me the below messages. Anyone got any advice for a Mac newbie?

  • Mail.app won't autocheck for new mail on launch. Why???

    Hi,
My dad's an internet newbie. I have him set up on my old iMac G4, running 10.4.2 (still need to get him upgraded to 10.4.3). He's using Mail.app with an SBCglobal.net (Yahoo) DSL account.
The account was set up on his Mac via the wizard that SBC provides for OS X on their install CD. This is the only account he has, and in Mail.app preferences, under Accounts/Advanced, "Enable this account" and "include when automatically checking for new mail" are both checked. Also, under General preferences, he's set to check for new mail every minutes.
All that being said, as far as I can tell, Mail.app will not automatically log on and check with SBC for new mail upon program launch. He must manually click on the Get Mail button in the toolbar to see his mail.
I'm utterly stumped! Any ideas? Is there something funky about how SBC/Yahoo handles mail that I need to know about?
    Take care,
    Steve

It would, because not while asleep. I said it should work correctly after the wakeup.
Come on, you could add new accounts without a restart of the app. Where is the problem to start the process again after the wakeup?
I hope you know what timeouts are - why should a server have such big timeouts to register that the machine is online after a few hours? thats not the work of the server.
    Really simple:
    o) machine online: client sends login, IDLE works fine.
    o) machine is asleep, crashes, lost the connection, ...: server tries and tries -> timeout
    o) machine wakes up, comes online again: client sends the login again

  • Cannot send email from the Mail App?

I've had an izymail subscription for 1 year and just renewed it last week. I could never send an email from my Mail App without a window popping up stating "izymail cannot connect to the server" and the sending bar (along the bottom of the screen) just freezes and will not send.
I've a Hotmail account linked up to izymail. Anyone know how to fix this problem?

I fixed my problem - I deleted my email account on my iPhone, then tried to setup a new account. I had a few problems setting it up. It wouldn't recognize the incoming or outgoing servers and I lost my email altogether for a few hours. Then I changed every setting possible and finally figured out that I had 2-3 "Other SMTP Servers" as well as my "Primary Server". Once I deleted the Other SMTP Servers, my email worked and i'm able to send emails now!
I also think changing the "Server Port" number helped solve my problem also, and making sure "Use SSL" was turned off.

  • Mail.app keeps saving downloads to Mail Downloads rather than ~/Downloads

I've modified Mail.app preferences to save downloads in the main downloads folder, ~/Downloads. But every time I double click an attachment, it still downloads to the wrong folder, Mail Downloads, in a terribly nested directory, ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail/Data/Library/Mail Downloads.
I've tried restarting Mail.app, I've tried restarting Mac OS X, to no avail. This is starting to smell like a constant's set somewhere, instead of referring to the current application preference.

When you get an email with attachments, mail automatically unpacks attachments into those funky nested folders.  If you open the attachment directly that's what it opens, because it assumes that you just want to look at the attachment, not save it.  on the other hand, if you right-click and explicitly choose download it will download a copy into the downloads folder where you expect it.

  • Mail app wont open/ crashes

I turn on my mac this morning and the Mail App wont open, it keeps on crashing.
I tried holding shift key while opening it and the program does open, but when i select a message it crashes again.
    never had this problem before.
There is not current updates available for my mac, so I dont know what it is happening.
    I have a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 - 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Machintosh HD , I am running Maverics 10.9.1

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • Mail app wont open. Have tried restarting, and it still kicks me out. Can anyone help?

My mail app doesn't seem to open. It starts but then it kicks me out.  I have tried restarting the device and the app but it makes no difference.  Its telling me i have 2 messages but i cant get in to read them.  Has anyone had this trouble before?

Close the Mail app in the Task Bar and re-launch.
Double-click the Home button to reveal Task Bar. Hold Mail app down for a second or two; tap the minus sign to close app.
If it still doesn't work, try a reset.
Hold the Sleep and Home button down (together) for about 10 seconds until you see the Apple logo.

  • Will any mail apps open to the inbox by default?

I have been using computers for decades...and have had my iPhone for a few years now. It was only a few days ago that I got my first iPad and was surprised by the "feature" that all of the mail apps seem offer...
I am talking about opening the app to the last email you were looking at. I tried a few different apps and they all seem to offer the same thing.
Why does it seem to be an iPad thing to make you go to your inbox instead of having it be the first thing you see?
Can anyone direct me to an app for the iPad that when I open it, I will see my inbox?
Maybe it's just me but I don't want the contents of an email being displayed on my screen until I choose...who knows who will be looking over my shoulder when the app is opened.
Thanks in advance for any help you can send my way.
    Scott

This answer does not help me at all.
It does not address my initial question...not even a little bit.
Me mentioning someone looking over my shoulder was just an example.
The point is, I want an app that opens by default directly to the inbox.
If you have anything useful to contribute, please do.

  • How can I change the display of Inbox in my iPad's mail app- so that it takes up the full screen?

How can I change the display of Inbox in my iPad's mail app- so that it takes up the whole screen, as opposed to just about one third; the other two thirds display the full text of the selected email?

You can't change the display in the Mail app, if you are holding the iPad in landscape orientation then the left-hand third will be for navigation, and the right-hand two-thirds will be an email. If you hold the iPad in portrait orientation then the navigation section becomes a drop-down section.

  • How do I add my Hotmail account to my Mail app on my MacBook Pro so that it synchronize automatically ?

Hi guys, I'm new to Mac. I know that you can add email accounts likeHotmail into your Mail app so that you can view, edit, modify, create and delete your emails and folders, etc. The questions I have are (1) can I see all the emails I have not just in the inbox but all the other folders as well just like if I was logging on to Hotmail via Internet Explorer ? (2) what happens if I read some emails, delete or move some emails, create new emails and send or save in draft, create or delete folders, etc in the Mail app on my MacBook Pro, will this synchronize and reflect the same on my Hotmail account if I was to logging via Internet Explorer ? How about the other way ? If so, how do I set it up on my MacBook Pro to do this automatically ?
I know that this doesn't work with Hotmail accounts on my iPhone 4 via the Mail app. Everytime I read an email or delete an email on my Mail app, it does not synchronize or reflect the same on my live Hotmail account when I logging via Internet Explorer.
Any help, guidance or advise would be appreciated. Thanks.

Edit: never mind, I was using the wrong password
