Mail.app not connecting post 10.5.6 upgrade

Since upgrading to 10.5.6 Mail no longer connects to any of my email accounts, including Exchange server and POP accounts (2). All I get is a timeout window. I have deleted Exchange account and tried to re-enter, but still unable to connect. There is not a connection problem with the machine because Entourage, running on the same machine can still connect (unfortunately had to fire it up when Mail threw in the towel). I have reinstalled OS 10.5.6 but to no avail.
Does anyone have any ideas?
Thanks

G'Day Simon,
Before you upgraded to 10.5.6 did you (and I ask this carefully) by any chance do a backup and repair disk permissions? It's a common question asked by most of the knowledgeable ones on this forum and I must admit I follow that process before I upgrade as too often I read of the sad stories here where problems are encountered.
As a first step have you tried repairing disk permissions since the upgrade?
Have a look at this post too just in case it is relevant.

  • Mail app not connecting to gmail account

    Hi
So I have 2 gmail accounts where our company domain uses gmail for its email service. Mail was working fine on both the accounts till last week.
I had configured both the gmail accounts very easily by just selecting Google on the Mail App on my Macbook Air 7 months back. I just added my email id and my password and the Mail App automatically configured both my accounts.
Last week one of the gmail accounts stopped updating on the Mail app on the Macbook. I was recieving mails on my iPad and iPhone so I knew there was something wrong. The second gmail account was working just fine. I tried various things but that account refused to work. So I deleted that account and tried adding that account back. I could not add that gmail account this time round and kept giving me an invalid username password error or some account not valid error. I go to the online version of Gmail and login with exactly the same information.
Then to probe more I delete the working gmail account and try to add it again. That account also does not seem to be adding now. Same error as the first account. So now I cannot access both my gmail accounts on the mail client.
I just realized that I updated to OSX Mavericks 10.9.2 on 28th Feb and am pretty sure that all this has happened immediately after that.
Anybody else with similar issues? Any ideas on what I should be doing?
    Cheers

Not alone with problems on "Mail" app server connection, iMap!!!!  I believe Apple is strengthening their server farm.  Has been out for over a week; they were wise to have the iCloud also in the cloud.  Be patient!

Have you considered the possibility that the third party fan software might itself be implicated in the issue, theosib (or perhaps something else introduced at about that time?).
My inclination in a situation like this would be to back up your drive to an external, wipe the drive, and do a clean installation. At the very least I'd try an archive and install.
Do you have plenty of free space on the drive? Once you get things down below the last 10 to 20% things can get hairy at times, and may not be fixed as a result of simply freeing up some room, as free space fragmentation is likely to have set in.
As far as RAM goes, either "Rember" - http://www.kelleycomputing.net:16080/rember/ or, better still, but less user friendly, "memtest" - http://www.memtestosx.org/ does a much better job of checking your RAM than the AHT. Still takes a while to run for a thorough test, but much quicker than the approach you are planning on using.
You might also want to use "Activity Monitor" to check for any applications with progressive "memory leaks" or that are acting as CPU hogs, given your symptoms

  • IPhone Mail App cannot connect with gmail iMap server

So my gmail address list or contacts seems to have been hacked and all my contacts who are still talking to me have told me so.
So I changed my gmail password.
No more complaints, and probably no more friends as contacts.
But seriously, I have been able to get gmail (web) working with my new double authentication password(s). Also, my outlook for MAC is working using the special "generated App Password". (because Outlook cannot do the double authentication thingie)
Ditto for the gmail app from google on my iPhone. (it works too)
    BUT
I cannot get the iPhone Mail App to connect to Gmail.
I have deleted (i thought) my existing gmail setup from my iPhone. When I try to re establish the gmail settings, using either the password generated by the MAC / iCloud keychain generator or the App password, I get the message "My Name" is already added.
It looks to me that there is something in the iPhone that matches my gmail address, even though I deleted the account.
Any suggestions before I call Apple for help?
    Thanks
    Barry

    I think so.
Actually I think I need to get the App Password for Mail on my phone. It generates the app password and I enter it into the password in the gmail setup for mail.
The problem is that when I hit next on that page, I get the message:
"my name" is already added" and I cannot proceed.
Before doing this setup I deleted my gmail account by tapping the email address and hitting delete in the Mail, Contact and Calendars setup..
but, there is something hiding in my iPhone that remembers my old gmail password (I guess) and doesn't let me proceed.
If I enter my gmail iChain password I get the same thing.
If i do this in airplane mode (no connection to google) i also get the same.
I talked to an apple care person who had me reset all my settings... still the same thing.
I am trying to avoid a gull reset of the iPhone, but that may be in the cards.
Going to go to the apple store and ask there, but i am not hopeful.

  • Is my Gmail app on my iphone preventing my mail app from connecting to my gmail account?

Is my Gmail app on my iphone preventing my mail app from connecting to my gmail account?
Whenever I try to type in my information to my Mail app it will not verify my gmail account- it says my username/password is incorrect when it isn't.
    Please help!

it may be a two part security verification.  contact the email provider and see if you need a special password.
some users find simply changing the password resloves the issue.

Well, I've never used this API but it seems 100% clear what's wrong. And 5 seconds with Google has revealed that there's a method on that class which looks like it will address the issue.
If you can't even read basic error messages, you should seriously question whether you should be programming.

  • Can't get my mail say not connect to server but I'm on facebook

Cant get my mail says not connected but on facebook

Please provide more information about the issue you are experiencing. What mail provider? What is the exact error? Do you mean that you can get onto your Facebook page via the internet? How do you see these as being related?

  • Mail Will Not Connect

As of yesterday evening (September 12th, 2009), I have been unable to receive new emails into Apple Mail, and also was unable to connect to iChat. The second issue was solved by resetting to port 443, but after scouring the forums I have not found a similar fix for Mail that has worked for me. I have already tried restarting the computer, running software updates, and deleting the mail preferences from the library -- this last one worked until I tried to set up my accounts again, at which point I received this message:
"The Mobile Me IMAP server "mail.mac.com" is not responding. Try checking the network connection, and that the server name is correct. Otherwise, the server might be temporarily unavailable."
If this is the case, that the server is simply unavailable at this time, I'm willing to accept that. However, I'm receiving a similar message when I try to set up my gmail account, and I am inclined to believe that both servers have not gone down at the same time.
I don't care about loosing old emails by setting up the accounts again and starting fresh, but I don't seem to be able to receive mail that way either. Is there anything else that I can reset in account preferences? Should I perhaps try a manual setup for the accounts?
    Thank you--
    --Silvertrumpeter

I do not believe that this is a password issue. After watching the Activity window and the Connection Doctor, I got a message suggesting that I turn off SSL and try again. So I did, and watched the Activity and Connections windows again, with the same result. The Connections Doctor window tells me this:
"Connection Status: Mail was able to connect to the internet."
But next to my mobile me account name is the red status light, and the message that mail "Could not connect to this MobileMe IMAP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the account preferences." Now, since this was all set up automatically, I'm guessing that I have not entered any incorrect information, but if anyone knows exactly what it should say, I'd be grateful to have that information.

  • Apps not connecting

For some reason, my iPhone does not connect with most Apps (including the App Store). I have full signal strength and can send/retrieve emails without problem.
I have turned the phone on and off. Even did a refresh (holding both the Home and Power buttons down until the apple logo appears). Nothing seems to make a difference.
And on some apps, I can connect (such as American Airlines). It doesn't make sense. Especially the App Store app to update apps not connecting.
    Does anyone have any ideas?
    Thanks

I am having the same problem. Can send/receive email and text messages, but cannot connect to game center server.

  • Mail App keeps freezing and crashing after yosemite upgrade.  Cant create new emails.

Mail App keeps freezing and crashing after yosemite upgrade.  Cant create new emails.  Is there a fix to these issues?

    Hi,
When I read these Threads in Yosemite I am filtered to show only the one listing Messages (the App) as the App involved.
This form of tagging a Thread no longer shows up in the current software used to run the Discussions.
Did you use the Mail and the Messages tags ?
It is difficult as many Mail help items refer to emails and "messages".
With me posting to the thread it should raise it to near the top again and maybe someone who knows about Mail will post.

  • Mail app not working - says connecting... no new mail

Ok so I recently had a problem with my iPhone's "phone" app and "contacts" app (both would open a white blank screen and then crash after approx 10 sec.) so I did a back-up and restore from iTunes. After that the problem was fixed. However, NOW my iPhone's "mail" app is not working. When I open the app it says "connecting..." and has the spinning wheel but that it never connects. That wheel just keeps spinning away. When I use the "safari" app to access my gmail account it works perfect. I have 4 accounts (including my iCloud account) set up on my iPhone and I can't figure out what's wrong. I know I'm not the only one with this issue because I've seen the same problem UNANSWERED multiple times in this forum.
I'VE ALREADY TRIED A HARD REBOOT* - When my phone turns back on there is new mail but when I click on it to view it it doesn't load the message. just another spinning wheel. AHH!
This problem is really, really bothering me. SOMEONE PLEASE HELP!

    Hello rayalamx
If the Mail app is not opening, then I would remove the email accounts. Open mail to see if that resolves the issue and then start adding the accounts back in.

  • Random issues of Mail (V5.1) app not connecting with iCloud (MobileMe) server

My wife is having intermittent iCloud email server issues. Sometimes it works, sometimes not. The iCloud system status page says everything is okay, and my MacBookPro has the exact same setup as hers and does not have the problem. Her iPhone email works without a hitch so it is somehow Mac / Lion related. She migrated from MobileMe to iCloud but so did I. We both migrated from MM to iCloud a few days after iCloud was launched in October. She has a 2010 MacBook running 10.7.2. I have an '06 MacBookPro running 10.7.2.
Here is the response from Mail Connection Doctor:
"Could not connect to the MobileMe IMAP server. Check your network connection and that you entered the correct information in the Account preferences. Also verify that the server supports SSL. If it does not, deselect the "Use SSL" checkbox in the Advanced tab of Account preferences."
I think only the first part of the Connection Doctor response is pertinent. All the settings were created by the iCloud mail setup in system preferences and are the same as mine. I ended up rebooting her system and Mail started working again but I'm not sure if that solved it or it just coincidentally started working afterward. This has happened multiple times over the last few weeks.
    Any ideas?

The most probable explanation is that the server is getting overwhelmed by too many users and is therefore not responding to requests. I've seen this occasionally with other mail servers - it clears up after a bit - but whether there's just a temporary problem with iCloud or whether it's already got more customers than it can handle I don't know.

  • Mail app not automatically deleting trash emails

    iTunes 11.1.2.32 Windows 7 32 Bit
    iPhone 4S (and iPhone 4)
    iOS 7.0.3
I have my own domain name for my email.
I can access via POP3 SSL and IMAP SSL
My first iPhone was a 4 which i used July 2010 to July 2012. I July 2012 i upgraded to my current 4S.
I use Windows Mail on my PC to access my email via POP3 SSL as i have no need to keep messages on a server any longer than i need to.
I use the Mail app on my iPhone to access the messages via IMAP SSL. Up until iOS 7 i would check my emails using the iPhone and delete any messages to the Trash folder On My iPhone (not on the server). I would have it set to delete the deleted messages After One Day so i had a 24 hour safety buffer.
This way i could use the iPhone as a quick check on my email and also use it as a Spam filter. If i needed to reply to an email from my iPhone I would and cc myself in if i needed a copy. One or twice a week i would fire up the PC and download the messages in the Inbox to the PC in Windows Mail.
This arrangement worked flawlessly for 3 years until i updated to iOS 7. Now the deleted messages in my Trash folder stay there until i manually remove them. I've tried:
-deleting and resetting up the account again in the iPhone
-changing the setting to One Month, saving the change and then setting it back to One Day and saving the setting.
-checked with my domain/email provider that i'm using the correct settings.
-changed IMAP Path Prefix from \ to INBOX, which works the first time but then fails to work again (i.e. each time i change it to \ and then back to INBOX it clears everything over a day old at that point but then doesn't do it again)
My wife has my old iPhone 4 without a SIM and uses it as an email checker for her account as well as for surfing the net and Facebook etc. She has the same setup as me (but seperate email account on my Domain) it all worked fine on that too until the update to iOS 7.
Is there a setting that might have gone out of line here or something i've missed?

There are actually two settings that could have a bearing on this:
Preferences > General > Check for New Mail
Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Include when automatically checking for new mail
Also, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list.
Do you have any Mail plug-ins or any system utilities that could interfere with Mail? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
    /Library/StartupItems/
    /Library/InputManagers/
    ~/Library/InputManagers/
    /Library/Mail/Bundles/
    ~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
Also, open System Preferences, and go to Accounts > Login Items. What do you see there?
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • Mail app cant connect to hotmail smtp

    hi everyone
I just started using mac in dec
Today, when i try to send an email using the mail app, an error message comes up saying it cannot connect to mail server
But I can receive mail from my hotmail account
I tried looking through some post, most of them only says change the port number which I did, but no luck
So I want to see is there anybody here got the same problem or has a solution to it
    Many thx!!!

it might not work with hotmail, but sometimes try unchecking SSL. and also try unchecking the "password" option and put "none"...or some combination of that.
if that doesn't work, you can always configure an smtp server option from your home or university ISP and send emails out through that.
it really doesn't matter, you can send from different smtp and it will still arrive from your hotmail address, although i'm not sure if spam filters will know the difference or not.
perhaps your ISP's are blocking something. i find this to be the case many times believe it or not. you should call the ISP or your tech department to trouble shoot that configuration.
i'm not an expert on this by any means, but i travel a lot in weird countries with slow connections, and i have had all kinds of problems. once, we were in a tiny town with satellite/cable internet access for the whole town. i could send out, but my friend with another mac couldn't.
also, sometimes it has to do with your email provider. but in this case, it's hotmail, so that's doubtful.
