Mail app not deleteing messages in trash like it's supposed to

I have a .mac email account. In "Mailbox Behaviors" I have checked "Move deleted messages to the Trash Mailbox" and "Store Deleted Messages on Server". I also have selected "Permenantly erase deleted messages when: one day old".
The problem is that mail is not deleting my messages when one day old. The messages just sit there in the trash forever.
Anyone else have this problem or have any ideas on how to solve?
Thanks.
EDIT: The message was deleted when I quit mail and restarted. I don't understand. Usually I leave my mail app up and running 24/7. I thought that selecting "Permenantly erase deleted messages when: one day old" was supposed to do that even if the mail app was running all the time, when it syncronizes? But I have to quit mail and restart it to get it to do that?

Hi, McToast.
I don't use .Mac mail, but I've noticed the same behavior w.r.t. "Delete messages when one day old." Personally, I think it's a bug. I just press Command-K every once in awhile in Mail to delete all the Trash: I have mail set up to move everything that is considered Junk to the Trash vs. a Junk mailbox.
I submitted a Mac OS X Feedback on this months ago. You may want to do the same.
You might want to check the Mail & Address Book Discussion, which is where Mail-related questions should be posted.
Good luck!

  • Mail app-cannot delete messages error message

Moved top Lion and am ditching Outlook 2011. Started with my POP account to get comfortable with the interface. All working as anticipated.
Long term goal was to move to IMAP and I did so. Now when I try to delete anything with the short cut I get
"The message Food Pantry-January could not be moved to the mailbox (null) The destination mailbox (null) does not allow messages to be moved to it"
Sounds funny. I can drag items to Trash>On my Mac and then delete without issue.
Seems that this is a permissions thing but I am not sure where to look.
Also with this message on the screen and clicking Mail>Preferences I got a very quick kernel panic. Reported to Apple on restart and am working this note with all systems seemingly running OK.
FWIW. This was a migration from old MBP to new MBP. Never used Mail in old MBP so the experience started with a fresh data set.
    Thanks

    Solved...
It is the setting in Mail. Preferences>accounts>mailbox behavior.
My case the trash items were selected which I interpreted as allowing things to be deleted.
In fact it is the opposite. Deselcting the items now allows me to delete using the shortcut.

  • Ipad mail is not deleting messages off the server

I have my setting configured to delete email;s from server when removed from inbox but it doesn't.  My provider stopped my account because I had 1200 messages in there.  Any ideas?

Are you sure that instead of "when removed from inbox" it isn't "when deleted"?
It may be a problem with how your provider interacts with commands coming from the device.  Which provider is this?  Perhaps someone who uses the same service will be able to assist you.

Getting the message "your mail could not be moved to trash", and keeps reappearing as not read or deleted.

Did you have Hotmail set-up with Android prior?  I did, and if you did too, you have the same problem, and this is how to solve it.
From your desktop computer, the Hotmail (or Outlook) website uses the folder "Deleted" for your deleted messages as default.  On your iPhone, the deleted folder's name by default is "Trash".
When I had my Hotmail with Android, it created a folder Trash for deleted messages, and it's creation was amongst all my folders.  So when you go back and look at Hotmail from your desktop, you will see a folder Trash, in addition to the default Deleted.  My Trash folder had all the emails I deleted from my Android.
That said, with the manual folder Trash that was created, when trying to set-up Hotmail now on iPhone, because I already had a folder Trash, it conflicted with the default "Trash" folder it wanted to created, so it didn't create it, being the reason why you can't delete emails, because it doesn't have the defaulted "Trash" folder to go to.
The solution is to delete the folder "Trash" from your desktop, uninstall Hotmail from your iPhone, and re-install, and it worked, the defaulted "Trash" was then created, alongside the "Sent" and "Junk".

Further, when I select a message or group of messages, one of them is copied (not deleted) to the trash folder. Can someone help me through this?
    Thanks.

It's a POP account. I decided to clean up my mailbox today after noticing the computer was real slow after USA Today started sending their daily top stories with new graphics. Also before I noticed the problem with mail deletion - two things happened. 1) I updated security sofware as prompted by Apple and 2) downloaded Mackeeper and went throught some preliminary scans but did not buy their package. Thanks forn nstaying with me.

That sounds like a compatibility issue with an add-on that you have installed, as reported by a number of users in both Firefox 22 and Firefox 23 over the last couple of months. If you would provide a listing of your installed extensions ''(as you were prompted to do when creating this thread)'' maybe one of us can advise you which extension is the mot likely culprit. You will need to re-install Firefox 23 to do further diagnostic testing.
As far as the compatibility of Firefox 23 and Win XP SP3, Mozilla has verified they are compatible and not one user ''(including me on two separate PC's)'' has reported a problem with compatibility.

  • Is you mail app crashing when using the trash can delete??

Is anyone having a problem with mail app. crashing after using the trash can delete. I am no longer using the trash can so I have not had another mail crash. Swipe and delete and edit and delete work ok. Only the trash can delete causes the problem.

Alberta....I first tried the reset, which didn't work, so I had to do a full restore. Which helped has corrected the problem. I just can use the trash can delete.

  • In Mail, how to reinstall a «Deleted message» folder trashed by error ?

    Hi,
From Mail's sidebar, I deleted a «Deleted Message» folder that seemed to be a duplicate of the «Trash» folder (Corbeille in French).  I did that to fast ...  and I realize that all my deleted messages dissapeared.   I never really understyood these duplicated «Trash» and «Deleted Message» folders, so I should have paid more attention ... gurlp !
I then searched my hard disk to see where my actual «Deleted messages» folder was nested.  That folder was backed up in the cloud with CrashPlan, so I restored it to my desktop.  It was nested here:
    Users/MyUserName/Library/Mail/V2/Mailboxes/Deleted Messages (Vidéotron)
I checked to be sure that the I had found the good folder.  I then closed Mail.  I moved the actual «Deleted messages» folder to the trash and replaced it with the one I restored from CrashPlan.
When I launched Mail while the restaored folder contained ± 4000 messages, Mail only displays 72.
    Somebody has a clue ?
    Regards.
    Robert Lespérance

The «Deleted Messages (Vidéotron).mbox» original folder that contains ±4000 deleted messages is shown in this picture (click here).  As you see the messages are distributed in many folders and sub-folders.
I want to import thoses messages back in Mail ... and as I said, it doesn't work.  Is there somebody out there that understands my problem ?

  • My mail app has deleted the trash folder from my hotmail account.

This afternoon my mail app started saying unable to send to trash. I'm baffled, as I haven't touched any settings and up until today I have had no issues with the mail app. I keep my trash empty so that negates the only fix I could find while researching the problem. I tried to go to the specific hotmail account and there appears to be only inbox and drafts listed. Any suggestions?

Turns out a hard reset did the trick

  • Cannot delete message from Trash

    Hi
I have more than 10,000 deleted messages under Trash, in a folder named "on my mac".
When I try to empty that folder o just empy the whole Trash, Mail crashes due to the high volume.
I would like to delete those messages from the Finder, but I cannot find there the "on my mac" folder.
Any ideas on how to get rid of the deleted messages?
    Thank you.
    Eneko

The messages are .emlx files, but there is an index file that will still point to them unless they are deleted in mail.
    Try opening a few of the ( you say it's 60 000 now? it was 10 000 before ) messages - I hope you'll get a message saying they can't be displayed.
If you do, go to the mail menu Mail-Mailbox-Rebuild . this should re-work the index so it reflects the true number of messages.
Having said that - have you tried just deleting the mailbox, rather than trying to empty it? highlight the 'on my mac' trash mailbox & choose Mail-Mailbox-Delete.
Failing all that - I'd be tempted to move your wanted messages to various new mailboxes, ( in modest numbers per mailbox - perhaps not numbered in the 10 000's?) make a copy somewhere safe of the entire Mail folder, then force Mail to start from scratch & import your old wanted messages into mail.
To do this - after you've created your new mailboxes & moved the messages you want to keep into them; copied the Mail folder and Quit Mail
In Finder locate home/library/mail/ & trash that folder.
Then locate home/library/preferences/com.apple.mail.plist & move it onto the desktop, just in case things go wrong. ( I mean Move, don't leave the original file in the Preferences folder )
Open Mail again - you'll be asked for account details ( you wrote them down first?)
Just in case you get asked "do you want to import..." at this stage - Don't do it.
Then. from Mail, use Mail-File-Import Mailboxes & point it to the "mailboxes" folder inside the copy of the Mail folder you made.
Choose only the new mailboxes that you made, & moved your wanted messages to . Import them & they should all be viewable in mail.
Try the 'rebuild' or delete mailbox first though - & if any of the above isn't crystal clear - ask before you proceed.

  • AOL account in Mail (Leopard) - Cannot delete messages

I just set up my AOL account in Mail (Leopard) and whenever I try to delete a message I receive the following; The IMAP command “UID COPY” (to Deleted Messages) failed for the mailbox “INBOX” with server error: UID COPY failed Deleted Messages: no such mailbox.
Any ideas on why it will not delete. I am using port 993 and had it set up automatically.

I have tried the above suggested solutions.
Solution 1 - Deleting the com.apple.mail.plist file and moving the mail folder and then rebuild - no change
Solution 2 - "unchecked the "Move Deleted Messages to Trash Mailbox" box under Preferences -- Accounts -- (my AOL account -- Mailbox behaviors."
    - This works for just deleting the mail but if i send a Mail from my Mail App it is not able to keep a copy of it in the "sent" category in Mail it gives the error / show there to reflect my "sent" box.
"Mail was unable to open this mailbox on the server “imap.aol.com”.
The server error encountered was: SELECT Failed: Can't open mailbox Sent Messages: no such mailbox"
-I do not get this error though when i move items from within Mail from my inbox to my created folders on the AOL IMAP server.
I believe the error lies deeper in the new Mail app itself where within its settings when writing to what it believes is the default "Folder Name" on the server for "Sent" or "Deleted" section it differs with what it really is on AOL. Cause on AOL the folder names might be different and that is why it is having trouble looking for them.

  • Ipad mail app not responding

ipad mail app is not responding. The twirling circle just keeps going and nothing happens with the app, doesn't download any mail. WiFii is connected and working. I can go through the browser to gmail on the ipad and see messages but the mail app isn't working. Would like to reinstall it but it's not possible to delete it because it comes pre-installed on the ipad.

    You can force quit it.
Double tap the home button. This will bring up a single row of app icons on the bottom of the screen. Find the mail one, hold down on it until it wiggles with a - sign in a red circle. Tap on that (doesn't delete, it quits it).
Click the home button again to exit that mode and then reopen your app. See if that clears it up.
What is your mail client? If it's yahoo, you may be experiencing one of their random outages.....they have been upgrading their service for months and when they're working on the part of the data base that holds your account it'll mess up until they stop messing with it.

  • Mail is not downloading messages from two accounts but the messages are in the server.

Hello, I'm having this problem. Mail is not downloading messages from two accounts. I don't know why but there're two accounts working so bad. If I click with the right button on the account and click to see the account details, I can see the messages on the server but not in inbox. I made a sync with this account and my iphone and then the iphone downlad the messages with out problems. Not my imac at work or my imac at home... what can be wrong?
    Thanks.

For Gmail, this is normal, there is nothing you can do about it -- just type Mail AND Gmail in the search box to see threads discussing how Gmail works.
As for the other accounts, this shouldn't happen. I wonder if what you're seeing is just that Mail is ignoring this setting for mail that was already on the server when you started using it. I've seen something like this happen when playing with that setting, e.g. changing it from "After one day" to "After one week". Mail would just ignore messages that fell in the timeframe where the two settings could interfere and I didn't notice it until some time later, when Mail "forgot" those messages had already been downloaded and, being faced with them again, dutifully downloaded them as if they were all new.
I believe that, if you leave the setting however you wish and stop playing with it, then Mail shall correctly process any mail that arrives from now on. In order to manually delete old messages that Mail seems to be ignoring, you can invoke the Account Info window (this is probably what you meant when you said "I can delete messages individually"; if that's not the case and want more info on this, just ask).

  • Mail.app not accepting incoming mail in .Mac Account

This problem has been getting worse over the last two months. Mail.app has been selectively accepting incoming traffic to my .Mac address, even those that I whitelisted through Rules and junkmatcher.
Incoming Mail from trusted sources, such as family and friends are not appearing. Until recently, subscriptions such as Versiontracker, Sundance, Apple Event, etc would populate targeted mailboxes, but now even they have not being accepted either.
This is very curious - because, if I access my .Mac accoun via WebDAV or another email client, the missing mail appears. After I manually accept an incoming message via a browser or another client and subsequently use Mail.app to view messages, the missing missives appear. I have not changed anything in either "Rules" or Junkmatcher. What has changed is system upgrades over time from 10.4.2 to 10.4.6. Now mail.app appears broken.
Any insights or fixes out there?
I will bring this up with the "Geniuses" at the SF Apple store. But for now, I'll be using another client until Apple fixes this.

Every time I've seen something like this being reported, the problem ended up being a rule that wasn't working as expected, e.g. because a rule had specified any instead of all, or because a rule was routing messages to Inbox, or something like that...
