Mail app on my mac keeps opening spontaneously
The mail app on my mac keeps opening spontaneously with a bizarre email with blank address fields. I have done a virus scan, which shows nothing. Any ideas?
Son of a gun! I can reproduce this on my system, but only partially. I created a new Mac user, logged on, attached to one of my less-used mail accounts (mail only, not contacts), and typed various search strings into the search bar. I could get addresses into the pop-down list that this Mac user had never communicated with and had no stored mail for, but seemingly only addresses that my normal Mac user had communicated with using the same email account.
You are sure you don't share (and have never shared) an email account or Apple ID with these other users on your Mac?

After upgrading to OSX Mavericks Mail App quite when try to open my MS Exchange Mail Messages
After upgrading to OSX 10.9 Mail App quits when try to open my Mail messages. I have a MS Exchange account. I have removed account and installed it again. All messages where downloaded normally but when I just click on a mail the app quits :/
The option key... I've been holding down the command key... No wonder that didn't work. I should really be writing this stuff down!.
Regardless, Downloading and reinstalling iTunes did the trick.

Mail.app shows my .mac inbox is empty. all other tools show it is not.
a few days ago mail started acting strangely on my .mac account. it would indicate that i had a large number of unread messages in my .mac inbox, then when i looked at the inbox in mail, it would show up as empty.
i started to think that there must be some kind of problem, so i quit mail and checked via webmail. webmail can see all the msgs in my inbox. i quit and try mail.app again. same result (mail shows 0 messages).
i try forcing a "synchronize" from within mail (from the mailboxes menu). there is no change. i try a "rebuild" command from the mailbox menu. there is no change.
i try firing up entourage and it sees the mail in my inbox. i quit entourage and try mail again. no change (mail shows 0 messages).
i suspect that there is some kind of corruption or something either in the local state on my machine or perhaps a message which has some malformed headers or something which is sitting in my inbox and causing mail.app to be unable to properly download the mailbox contents.
i tried using webmail to go in and either delete the messages or move them aside to a separate temporary mailbox. back in mail.app, it sees the new temporary mailbox and at first indicates that it has ~40 or so unread msgs (which is true plus about 10 more read msgs), but when i actually click on the mailbox to look at it, it appears empty. i reconfirmed that webmail and entourage can both see ~50 msgs in the temp mailbox, but mail.app shows zero.
also, in addition, the same problem still holds for my inbox. so now when i send myself a test message, mail.app temporarily indicates that i have new mail, but then when i look in my inbox, nothing appears in mail.app. if i quit and go look at my inbox with webmail or entourage, i can see the new mail as expected.
i looked in system.log, console.log, and mail.log and didn't see any log msgs that seemed to relate to whatever problem mail was having reading the headers/contents from the server.
so i was trying to fix the problem by clearing out my inbox using webmail, but instead it appears that i have merely replicated the cause of the problem so that it now affects two folders instead of just one.
does anyone know of a way to definitively clear out a mailbox altogether on the server? it would be reassuring to know that there was not some hidden corrupt msg sitting in my inbox messing things up.
any other suggestions for how to get out of this state? thanks.
Mac OS X (10.4.5)oh forgot to mention a couple other clear signs that mail.app is "confused" here:
if i right click on a mailbox in the mailboxes window and select "get info..." (a very useful command hidden in an odd place), it shows me that right now my inbox has 3 messages and my temp mailbox has 50 messages. but when i look at either of these mailboxes normally, they show up with zero messages.
if i send myself a test message and then tell mail.app to check for mail, the new message indicator comes on and my inbox temporarily shows up as having 3 new messages. then when i click on it, it shows up as empty and the new message indicator goes away again. if i repeat this it will say 4 new messages, etc.
so it's acting like there's some kind of corrupt partial message at the top of my inbox that mail.app can't read and keeps choking on. i've had this happen before on other imap servers a while back. for those servers, i had normal login access, so i could go and edit or delete the offending file. in this case (apple's .mac server), i don't know how to do the equivalent. -
Mac keeper/ open search problem in safari

I hope you can help.
I've a major problem with safari.
As soon as I press a link or tab on any website I keep getting pages opening up with adds, for eg, William hI'll bet 365 etc, etc. A Mac Keepre page keeps opening also.
in addition when I look to search i,ve now managed to have a page called open search loading up.
I have tried everything to get rid of this is a nightmare, Safari is unusable with all the add opening.

Once adware is removed, quit the app by clicking AdwareMedic in the menubar
and selecting “Quit AdwareMedic”.
2. Safari > Preferences > Extensions
Turn those off and relaunch Safari again.
Turn those on one by one and test.
3. If AdwareMedic is blocked or “Server not found”, try this.

Mail.app problem or .Mac problem?

I had posted the message below in the ".Mac mail on your desktop" forum but I was referred to this forum.
I don't know if something is wrong in my .Mac account, or if this is how .Mac webmail and Mail.app are supposed to work together. Let me give you an example:
I use Mail.app on my PB and iMac at home. During the day, I use .Mac webmail at work. Let's say I send an e-mail at 3:00 PM with webmail. It will sit in my Sent Messages folder with the date the message was sent firmly planted in the header, along with From/To and Subject.
Then I go home and open up the PB, fire up Mail.app at 8:00 PM, and what do you know, that same e-mail now has NO date in the header (only From/To/Subject), and in the "Date Sent" column of my Sent Messages folder, it says it was sent at 8:00 PM. I might move to the iMac another two hours later, and the "Date Sent" column will then say that message was sent at 10:00 PM.
You get the idea. The actual time that the message was sent disappears from the header, and in the Date Sent column it is replaced by whatever time Mail.app connected to the server. So my e-mails don't appear in the order they were actually sent. Being borderline obsessive-compulsive, I find this annoying.
In webmail, the actual time all these messages were sent is still very much available in the header, so I don't understand why the date doesn't just get transferred along with the From/To/Subject information.
Is there any way I can get my Mail.app Sent Messages folder to behave as an exact mirror image from the webmail Sent Messages folder? If it's possible for the Inbox, why not for the Sent Messages? Don't they both get their information in the same place, the .Mac server?

I sent a message from .Mac webmail to my Hotmail account, and displayed the full header on the Hotmail side. I've copied the header below. It seems to me that the date sent info is there. If I am misreading the header, please let me know.
Is anyone else seeing this, or could someone with a .Mac account try to test this? Just send yourself a message using webmail, then see if Mail.app can read the date. Thanks so much.

Mail app. and Webmail .Mac don't sync Address Book properly
How does one go about making these 3 things Sync with each other correctly?
What I mean is this:
I have a lot of contacts with emails and such in my Address Book. I can access those with the Mail app. and I can send emails and keep on adding more info.
I use my .Mac account to supposedly sync and backup everything - so that when I happen to be away from my computer or if I want to surf it by webmail in to my account, I can -
however, when I access the address book inside my account in webmail, it's all jumbled up. A lot of the contacts have 2 copies of each, and then all the email addresses that I have been saving when I get new emails from new people within webmail it saves as a completely new contact.
This is getting tedious. Is there any way to make all these sync a little more coherently?

Apple Mail app "quits unexpectedly" immediately upon opening
Upgraded to Yosemite a couple weeks ago. Everything was working fine. Now Mail "quits unexpectedly" immediately upon starting.
I tried to save a message to Draft folder. That was the first "quit unexpectedly". Every time I try to start Mail it shows the Draft folder and that message. It quits too fast for me to delete the message. It quits too fast or won't let me leave the Draft folder. I have tried shutting all other programs down and rebooting. Twice. But Mail keeps quitting unexpectedly! I can't read mail on my desktop Mac!
Do I have to start using some other mail reading app? Please help!Hi Linc

Help connecting Mail app to my @mac account
Hi folks, (Late 2011 MBP) - OSX 10.7.5
For the first time ever im trying to access my @mac emails. Ive openned the Mail app and tried to add an account by entering my @mac username, address and password. The incoming mail server pref pannel pops up and the acount type is set to icloud. Ive never used icloud for mail so i check my icloud preferences and "mail & notes" isnt checked. I check it and it asks me to create an @icloud address. I do this and after hitting 'ok' and 'create' it just asks again. I hafta hit cancel and go back to the icloud pannel where mail & notes is unchecked again. Im assuming that without this checked i cannot access my @mac emails. Any suggestions out there?Here is how I have Mac mail configured for my me.com mail account:
account type: iCloud IMAP
incoming server: p04-imap.mail.me.com (this is greyed out, so must have been supplied by me.com)
Outgoing server: .Mac(iCloud)
TLS certificate: none
Under advanced:
Port 993 Use SSL
Authentication Apple Token

Merging Inbox/Sent for Mail.app on two Macs?
I send/receive all e-mail via Mail.app; this app is always kept "open" on my iMac and my ISP (in collaboration with GMail) automatically downloads all incoming mail.
When I'm away from home, however, I utilize Mail.app on a MacBookAir. My "home" Mac remains off or sleeping.
Once I've returned home, what procedure will allow the files on my two Macs to become identical?What kind of accounts are they? If they are IMAP, or can be set up as IMAP (gmail can), you would never have to sync them.
If they are POP accounts, you should set them up to Leave Mail on the Server for a long enough period that both Macs can download the email before it is removed from the server.
As for doing what you want, now, I'm not sure of the easiest way to do that. I would either forward them to myself, or try dragging them into a folder on an external drive and copy that over to the other Mac. -
Why is my mail app on my mac not loading properly?
I'll delete e-mail from my inbox, and it just marks them as read rather than deleting them. Also, it doesn't load when e-mails come on. I have to close it and open it to display my incoming e-mails. I never had any trouble until I updated to OS X Mavericks.

It sounds like you are seeing some unexpected behaviour with the Mail app after upgrading to Mavericks. I was researching where to start troubleshooting and found this article for you to help troubleshoot the symptoms you are seeing named:

The first and easiest test to try is to see if the issue affects a different user account on your Mac. Each user account has customized preferences and other items stored in its home directory. You'll first need to create an additional user if one does not already exist (follow steps a-h below). Then, log out of the current user and test the issue in the new user account.If this resolves the issue, there may be an issue with a file in the home directory of the original user account.
From the Apple menu, choose System Preferences.
From the View menu, choose Accounts (or choose Users if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Click "+" (or click New User if using Mac OS X v10.2 or earlier).
Give the new user a name and short name.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click the Password tab, and give the user a password.
Mac OS X v10.3 or earlier only: Click Security.
Select the checkbox for "Allow user to administer this computer". This makes the user account an administrator.
Click OK, or quit System Preferences.
Start up in Safe Mode (Mac OS X v10.2 or later only). If the issue does not occur, there may be an issue with a startup item, login item, or kext file. Refer to this article for troubleshooting suggestions.

If issue persists, from the Finder's Go menu, choose Go To Folder.

Mail app deleted and reinstall wont open, says not compatible with OSX
i accindetally deleted my mail app and emptied the trash, when I tried to reinstall from the startup disk, it installs but wont open, saying that the version of mail is not compatible with the version of OSX (10.5.8)

There is no downloadable version of Mail.app - it comes with the operating system i.e. on your install disks. -

Mail app crashes every time I open it
No recent updates or changes to phone, but every time I open the mail app it starts to check for messages and then crashes back to the home screen. I can't check mail, send mail, etc.
The problem is that you have a "toxic" or corrupt email message on your server. It may be malware, or may just be corrupted in transit. You need to remove the bad email from the server. If it's an IMAP account log in from your computer and delete it. Likewise for Push. If it's a POP3 account log in to your provider's webmail and delete it there.
Even after deleting it will remain in the mail folder, so you should go to Settings/Mail,contacts,calendar and turn the account off, launch email, then turn it back on. -

Help! Thank you!You might want to reconsider: simply do delete the emails, but it is generally not recommended to delete an application which was installed as part of the OS.
The reason you are getting the emails is because you have set up Mail to fetch your Gmail emails. If you want to open the Mail app and go to Preferences > Accounts, you should see your Gmail account listed - if it is, simply highlight it and click the "enable" to un-enable it. If you want to get rid of it forever, click the minus sign at the bottom. As long as Mail is not configured to fetch the emails, it will not do so.
