Mail.app problem or .Mac problem?

Hi all,
I had posted the message below in the ".Mac mail on your desktop" forum but I was referred to this forum.
I don't know if something is wrong in my .Mac account, or if this is how .Mac webmail and Mail.app are supposed to work together. Let me give you an example:
I use Mail.app on my PB and iMac at home. During the day, I use .Mac webmail at work. Let's say I send an e-mail at 3:00 PM with webmail. It will sit in my Sent Messages folder with the date the message was sent firmly planted in the header, along with From/To and Subject.
Then I go home and open up the PB, fire up Mail.app at 8:00 PM, and what do you know, that same e-mail now has NO date in the header (only From/To/Subject), and in the "Date Sent" column of my Sent Messages folder, it says it was sent at 8:00 PM. I might move to the iMac another two hours later, and the "Date Sent" column will then say that message was sent at 10:00 PM.
You get the idea. The actual time that the message was sent disappears from the header, and in the Date Sent column it is replaced by whatever time Mail.app connected to the server. So my e-mails don't appear in the order they were actually sent. Being borderline obsessive-compulsive, I find this annoying.
In webmail, the actual time all these messages were sent is still very much available in the header, so I don't understand why the date doesn't just get transferred along with the From/To/Subject information.
Is there any way I can get my Mail.app Sent Messages folder to behave as an exact mirror image from the webmail Sent Messages folder? If it's possible for the Inbox, why not for the Sent Messages? Don't they both get their information in the same place, the .Mac server?
Thanks in advance for any help you may be able to provide.

Hi David, thanks for replying.
I sent a message from .Mac webmail to my Hotmail account, and displayed the full header on the Hotmail side. I've copied the header below. It seems to me that the date sent info is there. If I am misreading the header, please let me know.
Is anyone else seeing this, or could someone with a .Mac account try to test this? Just send yourself a message using webmail, then see if Mail.app can read the date. Thanks so much.

  • Mail app problem

My wife and I have seperate user accounts on the macbook. When I ran the mail app in her account it asked for some set up info, which we entered based on what was being used in her imac. Didn't do much with it for a day or two and then when I came back to it I was unable to connect to the defined POP server (Connection Doctor window showed POP login failing). After fiddling around a bit with no success I decided to delete the mail account info (via the - button from mail->preferences->acounts) and create a new one. The account info appeared to be deleted then but we got a multicolored spinning wheel that woudl not go away and ultimately had to force quit the mail app. Now when the mail app is launched all we get is the spinning wheel and all we can do is force quit the mail app. I tried to find out how to run the mail setup assistant again but could not find any info on how to run it or where to find it. All I found was info that said it would run the first time mail app was run.
Dose anyone have any pointers or know what I should do to resolve this mail app problem?
    Thanks
    Craig

There are several threads on this in the forums. Search for "Mail spinning beach ball."
Essentially, there is something wrong with the Mail folder in ~/Library/Mail/. Move the Mail folder to the desktop and restart Mail. It will create a new Mail folder. You can then import anything that was in the old mailboxes.

  • Mail app on my mac keeps opening spontaneously

The mail app on my mac keeps opening spontaneously  with a bizarre email with blank address fields. I have done a virus scan, which shows nothing. Any ideas?

Son of a gun! I can reproduce this on my system, but only partially. I created a new Mac user, logged on, attached to one of my less-used mail accounts (mail only, not contacts), and typed various search strings into the search bar. I could get addresses into the pop-down list that this Mac user had never communicated with and had no stored mail for, but seemingly only addresses that my normal Mac user had communicated with using the same email account.
You are sure you don't share (and have never shared) an email account or Apple ID with these other users on your Mac?

  • Mac Book Pro Mail App problem

I have a 3 month old MacBook Pro that has developed in the last 3 days a strange problem within Mac Mail app.  When I send or reply to a email message it shows up in the email thread or sent messages folder as a COMPLETELY different email to an entirely different address.  The incorrect messages/addressees that appear are from emails sent several years ago.  It appears that my emails are being received normally to the recipients (what I actually sent is received,  instead of what is appearing to me as what I sent), but as the thread continues or new messages are exchanged the thread is meaningless and garbled.
    Running Mountain Lion
I've tested sending email through both my Comcast server and iCloud.  Same problem either way.  Virus, malware........??  THanks for any suggestions

    Hi kezart,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.  Try rebuilding the mailboxes and see if that helps:

  • Snow Leopard mail.app problem

I just upgraded 2 iMacs at home with Snow leopard and am having a problem with mail.app. I have 13 e-mail accounts on my box, and my wife has 6 e-mail accounts on her Mac. We have never had problems with e-mail before and Leopard and Tiger would go through the POP accounts in order, 4 at a time, until all the mail was downloaded in all the accounts.
What is happening now is that the mail.app is trying to get ALL the mail at once and trying to access all 13 POP accounts on my Mac, and all 6 on my wife's. It will only grab the first 4 POP accounts and show errors for the rest (and take them offline). I get the "*Unable To Receive Mail - There may be a problem with the mail server or network...*" error for the remaining accounts. The only way I can get the rest of the mail is to go through each account, control-left click, and select "Get New Mail from "[email protected]". Needless to say, this is a real pain in the butt as I do get a lot of mail and prefer it to come in properly in the background.
This is happening on both iMacs so it can't be an isolated thing. Anyone know of a fix for this??

I'm having the exact same issue. I've spent hours rebuilding mailboxes, passwords, and keys. I can often go days before the mail will actually be seen in these offline boxes. Apple - we need this fixed!

  • Mail App problem with iCloud

For almost a month ago I have run into a problem where the Mail App on my iMac (Intel) with Mac OS X Lion shows a pop-up window that it cannot connect to iCloud. It prompts for my password and if I enter it, some times it immediately pops up again, or it can take a couple of minutes. Some times it just works for a few days.
This is very annoying and it has cause problems that I've not been able to send important e-mails.
    Anyone experienced this?
    Anyone have a solution?
    Sincerely,
    Andreas

  • Wierd Mail.app Problem

    Hi all,
I use Mail.app on a dual 2Gig G5 with 10.4.9. I have a variety of POP and IMAP accounts. All function well, including Mac.com, except for a Cox.net POP account which can send but not receive mail. The account setup (send receive servers & ports) has been confirmed to be correct, and I'm able to access my Cox mail via their webmail portal.
    Thoughts, anybody?
I just had a non-productive chat with a Cox techie who recommended that I call Microsoft for Outlook assistance. So much for Cox's expertise.

    You’re welcome.
Sometimes messages left on the server clog up the account there, or Mail chokes on a message it cannot download and that prevents it from downloading the rest as well. Solving this problem will probably require removing one or more messages from the server. What are your Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove copy from server settings for this account?
You may tell Mail to remove from the server all the messages that have already been downloaded by means of Preferences > Accounts > Advanced > Remove now. Alternatively, you may use the Account Info window to remove specific messages from the server — choose Get Info (⌘I) from the Action menu (gear icon) located below the mailbox list in the main Mail window. And if the account allows web access, you may also remove messages from the server that way.
Try removing from the server messages that have already been downloaded and/or the first message not downloaded yet (i.e. the message that Mail appears to be choking on).
You may want to try to download those messages with another mail client such as Thunderbird first, to avoid losing them — and use Eudora Mailbox Cleaner to import them back into Mail afterwards if you wish.

  • Interesting Mail App Problem with 3G

    OK
First off, I haven't had a chance to hit a computer to update to 2.2, Just moved to a new city and no high speed internet yet, maybe I can get a free update at a local Apple Store, See what happens here.
But from the sounds of it and forum posts. its caused more problems then 2.1
Anyways, Iphone 3G is using 2.1
I added a Hushmail IMAP Account to it.
I followed their Mac OS X Instructions and I can send and recieve email no problem.
    But,
If I turn on push 15 mins, send a test mail to myself, my main mail ICON isn't showing a red number above it when I get email, It will make a quick vibrate and noise, but no number.
Second, I have searched and searched.
My Email isn't going into the MAIN Inbox in the Mail App
Seems like it is being dumped into a Seperate INBOX folder below the main INBOX.
I can see my spam mail folder etc as subfolders below the main INBOX and the INbox folder its dumping my mail into.
I have tried adding /INBOX, INBOX, /Inbox, Inbox to my IMAP Path prefix and that doesn't seem to fix it and make my email going into the main INBOX.
Hushmail just got a email from me asking them about a IMAP Path Prefix, see what they have to say.
What does everyone else think here to solve this problem with the Updating and getting my email into the Main INBOX instead of a Sub-folder Inbox.
    Thanks for looking

Had the same problem and solved it by doing the following:
    Restore your iPhone with iTunes.
Activated it, but do not retsore your settings!
    Disconnect your iPhone from iTunes.
Tap Mail - you should now get the selection screen (Yahoo, AIM, whatever ...)
    Close Mail.
    Connect iPhone to your Mac.
Now restore your settings, synch and you should be done.
I found this out by pure curiosity - I was about to go from scratch as recommended in this thread and then decided to give it a try and see if mail.app worked at all - it did - and then I started to wonder what would happen if ... tadaa working iPhone

  • Mail app problems (duplicating email downloads)

in my Mail app, i am having a problem with receiving "duplicate" emails. i will get an email, and after in downloads to Mail, the "spinning circle" (next to the INBOX icon) keeps on spinning...then a duplicate of the email downloads. to stop the "spinning circle". i have to "force quit" Mail.
i have the option with Road Runner to get emails from their "WebMail" website. when i log-in, i see the email that is duplicating in Mail...plus other emails that has not been downloaded in my Mail application.
if i delete the "duplicating email" in RR Webmail, and launch Mail again, the "other emails" that i see in RR WebMail will download.
and if there are other new emails, the whole scenario will go over again in Mail.
i talked to a Road Runner technician and he tried to find a preference in the Mail app that will allow Mail to give a bit more time for Mail to download emails with larger attachments (2mb and up). he said that Mail is not giving enough time to download the larger emails, so it is "bottlenecking" the large email and other emails after that.
Just wondering if anyone knows about this problem, or if anyone knows if there is a preference in Mail to "extend" the download time for larger-sized emails......
    thank you....

I am having this same problem. How did you solve it?

  • STRANGE mail.app problems - Help!

A client's mail is severely screwed. here's a (brief) summary:
    OS 10.3.9
Client had mail hang & spin while having 3 replies open. Stuck in a loop, tried numerous Disk Warrior, repairs, permissions, etc etc etc... Client's Mail folder in ~/Library/Mail is huge, over 9GB (many mailboxes).
*Oddest thing: THAT mail folder cannot be copied over to external FW Hard drives (tried 2) hangs after 806mb. Got a strange error about "Incoming mail cannot be read or written" - words to that effect. I've never seen such a thing. I can't even backup that mail folder to simply wipe the drive to update to Tiger.
    ANY help appreciated!!

Finally I've figured out what happened for not syncing anymore what I did on the Mail.app mailbox of my Professional Exchange account.
So, the problem was the MailTags plugin: http://www.indev.ca/MailTags.html
I don't know if it was after the Trial Period that went rogue, or this has happen since the install, but when I've uninstalled it, it worked just fine.

  • HELP FOR SOME MAIL app PROBLEMS IN MAVERICKS!

As many of you, I was having great difficulty opening Apple's Mail app in Mavericks. The type of problem I was having is this:
When trying to open Mail for the first time in Mavericks, I would get the message that the database needed to be upgraded; the process would start, but Mail would become unresponsive. The progress bar stopped in the middle and only a forced quit could close the application.
    I noticed the following:
The actual files and folders in User/Library/Mail/V2, remained unchanged from the time before my attempt to open Mail, and for me no other changes were made.
I took the opportunity to move a copy of the V2 Folder to my Desktop for safekeeping. Trying to open Mail without this folder just caused the app to ask me to designate my accounts anew, which I had no intention of doing.
I then tried adding back items into the empty V2 folder.  Adding back all of the mail accounts and mailboxes except for the Mail Data folder had no effect, except that a new Mail Data folder was created, and the Mail app still asked me to designate my accounts anew.
I then added back the first half of my old Mail Data folder contents and allowed the copy process to overwrite the files in the newMail Data folder; there was still a problem.
Finally, I took the remaining files and one folder from my old Mail Data folder and added that to the new Mail Data folder. When I was asked to relpace matching folders and files I did that and whatever was left untouched by the file copy, I let stay there.
The Yellow taged files were the first half I transferred back.
As long as you have a protected copy of your Mail folder, you can try variations of the above. This is what worked for me, and I hope it is helpful to some or all of you.

Finally I've figured out what happened for not syncing anymore what I did on the Mail.app mailbox of my Professional Exchange account.

  • Built-in mail app problems...

I have an iPhone 3G. And I'm having problems with my mail. The built-in mail app kept deleting all of my e-mails all at once without even giving me any notices or stuff like that, and it does so every few days?! I've only used up 4.3 GB and there's still 20-ish GB left so I don't think that's the problem. Please help as soon as possible as I sometimes need to show my clients some of my documents but often times its not there anymore... Thank you!

Unfortunately, it's not a connection problem with the gmail server as other third party's apps succeed to send mails via gmail very quickly. Note also that I've also tried to delete that account and then re-create it but this didn't solve the problem.
    Sincerely!
    Atar.
