Mail app rules do not detect spam
I have added my Exchange, Yahoo and Gmail accounts to the Mail app and created rules both based on detecting "X-Spam-Level" in the headers, but also by using "ALL" where "Account Yahoo" and "Message is Junk Mail" and action is "Move message to Trash" but none of these two ways seem to work because the Spam is not deleted when it comes in. Any ideas?
Hi studUS,
The best way to have mail filter spam messages is to follow the steps in this article:
Lion Mail: Mark messages as junk or not junk
http://support.apple.com/kb/PH4774
If you receive messages that have been highlighted as junk, or messages that are junk but weren’t highlighted, you can mark the messages as not junk or junk. When you mark messages, Mail updates the junk mail database accordingly. Over time, Mail will identify junk mail more accurately.
Cheers!

Mail app quits when opened after installing Mavericks. I reinstalled and still the same. I noticed the mail app icon has not changed to the new icon in Mavericks. Any suggestions?
I also forgot to note that this problem also persists with the new iBooks application. I cannot get past the 'Get Started' screen or access the iBooks Store. Again, all top bar menus are unresponsive.

Why won't Mail.app rules won't migrate, System Tiger to System Leopard?
Hi,
Mail.app rules won't migrate from System Tiger to System Leopard.
Here's what I did:
-- Clean install of System Leopard 10.5.6 onto a new Mac Pro.
-- Used Migration Assistment to move files from System Tiger to System Leopard 10.5.6.
-- Mail.app's rules failed to migrate.
So, I manually finder-copied MessageRules.plist into the proper folder to replace the newly created and empty rules set in System Leopard's mail.app, and afterwards, the rules then showed up in mail's preferences.
However, the "manually migrated" [finder copied] rules won't run.
In order to narrow the scope of the problem, I moved the former System Tiger's mail.app rules to the desktop and allowed mail.app to re-create a new rules plist file, then I created a test rule and it worked.
Questions:
Why won't System Tiger's mail.app rules files migrate to System Leopard, and won't work upon manual migration?
What is the remedy to "properly import" the rules to the new [System Leopard based] mail.app, or to make the manually moved rules plist file work?
For what it's worth I did follow the procedures at
http://discussions.apple.com/thread....9306&tstart=90
in order to make the messages migrate, but that failed to affect the rules.
Thanks much,
JackHere's the fix, along with recommendations for Apple programmers.

Mail app window does not open, mail won't send
Ever since my upgrade to 10.7, my mail app has not opened a window (although the app opens). I can manually open a window from File/New Viewer Window. I also have to force quit the mail app, it will not close from Mail/Quit Mail. Also, it cannot send mail. I have been hoping 10.8 upgrade would solve, but no luck.

Mail app closes when not used for a while how fix?
mail app closes when not used for a while how fix?
This may also be due to the Sudden Termination feature built into OS X, which will effectively quit a process if the system is demanding resources. Mail can be a RAM hog at times, and if your system only has a few GB of RAM, then when other programs demand more and you have not been using Mail then the system will invoke Sudden Termination to quit it so more RAM is available elsewhere.
Do you have only ~2-4GB of RAM in your system? Check for this in the About This Mac option in the Apple menu, and if so then consider upgrading to more if your system supports it. Alternatively you can try quitting other applications to free up more RAM.
To see which programs are using the most RAM, open the Activity Monitor utility and choose My Processes from the drop-down menu. Then ensure Real Memory is checked in the View > Columns menu, and click this menu's title to sort the items by it.
Keep in mind that sudden termination does not fully quit the program, so Mail may still show up in Activity Monitor when you open it even though it may be closed from the Dock. -

I'm trying to find Mail.app rules enhancements...
...that make the rules act more like the filters in Eudora. Except for this issue, I am so happy I switched, but Eudora has three functions that I wish I had in Mail.app:
1. Eudora filters are marked as old if they haven't been activated in a period of time (I think 30 days.) This way you can delete filters that aren't necessary and you can keep your filters list managable. Especially good for filters that I create to combat spam, which changes all the time and renders some of my filters obsolete.
2. Within Eudora filters you can can have more complicated boolean conditions... Mail.app only gives you the choice of "all" conditions in a rule or "any" (all "and" or all "or",) whereas Eudora let me use both "or" AND "and" to create a more precise filter. I constantly wish I had that.
3. In Eudora there's a hot key to automatically create a rule on the fly, as opposed to Mail.app which requires you to open up the preferences every single time.
Am I missing something? Please tell me if I can activate features like this through some special voodoo on the app, or if there are plug ins or enhancements that I can download... but this is becoming a real drag. I spend so much more time futzing with the rules in Mail.app, tweaking them to make them work right than I ever did with Eudora. I almost tempted (gasp) to go back...
Mac OS X (10.4.5)I second John's mention of JunkMatcher for fighting spam - I use it and don't need any custom rules to weed out spam any more.
As for your third point - you might want to check out the Create Rule script available as part of Mail Scripts - it might prove a little easier way to set up a new rule based on the currently selected Mail (and you will be able to invoke it from the script menu):

Iphone mail app for hotmail not working
Hi,
i have the iphone 4s and have been using the mail app to connect with my hotmail account. in the past it has never been a problem but over the last few days it has not been recognising my password or verifying the account. i have deleted the account and re-installed it...did not work, i have logged onto the account using a p c and it seems to be fine, i am able to log into my gmail account but hotmail it has a problem with. any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.Logging in to an email account via webmail access using a browser is not the same as connecting with the incoming mail server for an email account with an email client.
You need to contact Microsoft regarding this problem especially since there is no problem accessing your Gmail account with the iPhone's Mail app. -
Is there any way to pass Mail.app rules to Outlook?
Hello, I want to use the same rules i use in Mail app from OS X in Outlook. Can you help me find the way to do it, because I have tons of rules and don't want to copy them one by one.
How much fuss is too much?
You can easily change your home directory to the other drive. That would certainly take care of it. Copy your home directory to the other volume. Then, in System Preferences > Users & Accounts, select your account, right/command click and choose Advanced. Change your home directory. Log out and back in.
You could also try to hack around with symbolic links, but that is more fuss. -
Anyone experiencing Mail.app in fullscreen not responding after screensaver?
Hello all!
I did a quick search in the forum but found nothing related. I am noticing that my Mail.app that is in fullscreen is not responding to mouse clicks (ie I can't click on Inbox) after screen saver has started. I don't know if time plays a role however I am noticing the issue after 15 mins, my break. Anyone experiencing the same?
~GregoryI have proven that the problem is being caused by the Software Update HT204210.
I went and purchased new iMac (LOADED) biggest, best iMac I could buy. New iMac has the most recent versions of softwares and OS, EXCEPT the latest update, Software Update HT204210.
System ran perfectly. Email was working as designed. No hangs ups, no errors.
Then the automatic Software Update ran last night (03/02/15) and installed Software Update HT204210. Now today 03/03/15 the system hangs and Mail stops responding.

.mac mail and mail.app, IMAP, inbox not refreshing on web after delete
I am using mail.app with my .mac mail account. When i delete an email from the inbox it moves it to my trash in the mail.app program and takes it out of the inbox, which is normal. However, it does not do this when i open up my mail using the web. Here, the message is still in my inbox and it is also in the deleted messages folder.
So, i have searched everywhere for some answers on this but have found nothing. In trying to figure this out i realized that if i click on the trash within mail.app, the little clock refresh icon pops up, then if i click back onto the "inbox" icon it then gets the refresh clock icon. After this is done the .mac web page is correct, nothing in my inbox and it is still in my deleted.
The problem is I dont click on trash and the back to inbox everytime i use my mail.app program so when i leave the house and check my mail at work using the web everything i deleted the night before is still there.
Is this normal? is there an auto refresh? i have it set to check for new mail every 5 minutes but that doesnt seem to get the refresh thing to happen. I also have my .mac sync to sync mailboxes and settings.
any help with this is appreciated. I have searched google and many forums for the answer and have given up.
Thank youYou're welcome.
It does as the selection indicates. It automatically synchronizes changed mailboxes only after a change is made to a mailbox that is stored on the server. So when selecting a message for deletion in the account's Inbox mailbox and after the message is moved to the account's Trash mailbox which stored locally on the hard drive or on the server via Mail preferences, each changed server stored mailbox in Mail is automatically synchronized with the server at that time. -

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

Mail app locks up (Not Responding)
I have an iMac (Late 2012) running Yosemite (10.10.2). Has been working flawlessly until recent issues with Mail app freezing with the Spinning Pin-Wheel of Death. I have to Force Quit, shows Mail (Not Responding).
Mail app has not had any issues until after the Software Update HT204210, installed on February 13. No other hardware/software changes.
Anyone else having similar issue or resolution ?
