Mail app stays in background until selected again

Upon initiating Mail, it most times (but not always) stays in the background when it should be the active window (sometimes even when only the Desktop is what is active). I can make it come to the foreground by clicking the dock icon again, but is there a setting I need to change to make it work as it used to? I cannot identify any variable that makes it work properly or not.
Thanks for any ideas...

Do you have any Mail plug-ins or system utilities that could interfere with Mail? In the Finder, go to each of the following folders (if they exist). What do you see there?
/Library/StartupItems/
/Library/LaunchDaemons/
/Library/LaunchAgents/
/Library/InputManagers/
/Library/Mail/Bundles/
~/Library/LaunchAgents/
~/Library/InputManagers/
~/Library/Mail/Bundles/
To make accurately reporting this information easier, you may open /Applications/Utilities/Terminal, type the following command (you can just copy it here and paste it in Terminal), and press <Return>. You can then copy the output of that command from Terminal and paste it in your reply to this post:
ls -1 /Library/StartupItems /Library/LaunchDaemons /Library/LaunchAgents /Library/InputManagers /Library/Mail/Bundles ~/Library/LaunchAgents ~/Library/InputManagers ~/Library/Mail/Bundles
webmail does not show any of the folders I have created in Mail.app
Have you created those mailboxes as “On My Mac” mailboxes or on the .Mac server? If you choose “On My Mac” from the Location popup menu in the New Mailbox dialog box, then it should be no surprise that the mailbox doesn’t appear on the server...
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the folder path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the folder path there.

  • IPhone 6 mail.app crashing in background

    Hello all
    iPhone 6 on 8.1.3
So here's a slightly annoying issue, it would appear that randomly, as I haven't figured out a trigger yet, the mail app stops working in the background. I receive emails daily and sometimes after a couple of days I'll think, I haven't received any mail for a while, open the app manually and multiple emails suddenly arrive.
I used push as I have an exchange account setup.
I've deleted my mail account and re-added it, rather not go through the pain of re-installing iOS, particularly as the issue occurred on the previous iOS 8+ releases.
    Anyone got any suggestions?
    Thank you.

Who is the email provider? Its the default email servers of DreamHost. I am using IMAP4.
Also, the email works fine for a while, so I guess the settings must be OK. Then it STOPS fetching new mails, despite refreshing. But it continues to SEND.
Yes the settings are verified. I have another own domain email ID from them which is working fine on the same iPhone.
Here is the reply from my hosting provider:
I'm very sorry to hear about this issue but unfortunately this is not
something we can address. As you noted if you reset the account is works
fine for a while. There are not changes we are making to our mail servers
that could account for that.  I've tested the [email protected]
account myself and confirmed that SMTP, IMAP and POP are all working
    fine.
This points to the issue being with the the phone and/or IOS 7/8 and
again that's not something we can help you with. I might suggest you
contact Apple directly so that this can be addresses as a bug and handled
    on their end.
I'm very sorry I'm not able to do much in this instance. If you need
anything else or have any further questions please let me know."

  • Mail App 4.3 crashes when selecting individual email for reading

Does anyone have experience with this problem? Does anyone have a solution for this problem?

    Hi Ernie,
I've gone thru my applications and do not see anything that appears to be an enhancement app. I previously had Missing Synch installed (since removed). As far as plugins, I do not think I have any but do not know how to confirm that. I've looked thru Mail.app's menus and preferences, and do not see any indication of any being installed.
I don't know if I it has any bearing but under System Preferences/Other, I do have MacFuse installed.
    Thanks again for the help,

  • Hotmail Alias in mail app: Refuses to use the selected email address

    Hello,
Before today I could send emails using my alias account from the iPad mail app, using my hotmail email addresses. However, from today, I select the email address I wish to use (As normal) but instead of sending it from the chosen email address, it instead sends it from my standard email address.
    Thanks for your time.
Oh, and I have not changed any settings, at all.

    Hello hbm2679,
I have many aliases email address, but mainly use one. I don't not send emails using my main account email address.
The way I changed it to only use the one (Alias) account was, when logged in to my hotmail account, over on the right (Next to your name), there is a gear.
Click the gear, and click "More Mail Settings".
Next, under "Managing your account", click "your email accounts".
Scroll to the bottom, and look for 'Default "From" address, and select the account/email address you want to use.
This is the only work around, I can think of at the moment. I think Apple need add more support for alias accounts.
    Hope this helps,
    Have Fun,
    Matt_75

  • Mail App v4.2 crashes when selecting messages to be read

I'm a bit lost as to how to diagnose this. I do not know how to log errors in the app for starters.
The program starts fine, but when I select a message for viewing, it pauses for a few seconds and crashes. Has anyone else had this problem? I've re-installed the OS w/o success of resolving this.
    Thanks,
    Greg

Additional info- logged in under separate test user ID and was able to repeat problem. I was not able to copy the error log that popped up, but did forward it to Apple w/ my email used for this account.
    Thanks,
    Greg

  • Links to web page in any mail message will cause Mail app to hang, and won't open Safari.

Repeatable problem on iPhone or iPad.
Any link to a web page will cause Mail to lock up and become unresponsive, and won't open the web page in Safari.
The only way out of this is to back out to the home screen, double-click on the home button, then select the Mail app icon, holding it until I can "close" it. I can then relaunch Mail and look at any message I want just like normal.  But if select any link, whether a text link or a picture in an email, the whole thing happens again.
Occurs on both my iPhone 5 and my iPad both running iOS 6.0.1.
Any suggestions that will allow me to go directly from a mail msg to a linked web page embedded within?

You ran a defective third-party "utility" that purports to "clean up" "junk" files. What it really does is to corrupt the operating system and many applications.
The first thing you need to do is remove that software according to the developer's instructions. Never install it, or anything like it, again. Then see below.
If you don't already have a current backup, back up all data, then reinstall the OS.* You don't need to erase the startup volume, and you won't need the backup unless something goes wrong. If the system was upgraded from an older version of OS X, you may need the Apple ID and password you used.
If you use FileVault 2, then before running the Installer you must launch Disk Utility and select the icon of the FileVault startup volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name.) It will be nested below another icon with the same name. Click the Unlock button in the toolbar and enter your login password when prompted. Then quit Disk Utility to be returned to the main screen.
There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional. Ask if you need guidance.
If you installed the Java runtime distributed by Apple and still need it, you'll have to reinstall it. The same goes for Xcode.
*The linked support article refers to OS X 10.9 ("Mavericks"), but the procedure is the same for OS X 10.7 ("Lion") and later.

  • Need to import 20 email accounts from Mail.app to my iPhone 6.

    HI,
At one time I would see a listing in iTunes of all the email accounts I could import into my iPhone 4.
I did that for a while but then was running low on space and deleted all the email accounts on the phone.
Now I have an iPhone 6 with more room and want to import the accounts.
But the listing is no longer shown in iTunes. (must have gone away in one of the updates).
I have iCloud linking my Safari tabs across my devises so I think iCloud is running properly.
Is there a quick way to get the accounts into my phone? Or do I have to add them one at a time?
    Thanks for any tips/info.
    DA./

It does sound like the index is corrupted - if the messages aren't in the index, then the fact that they're in the mbox still won't let mail see them.
Are there a lot of messages that are missing?
if it's not too many - then open each one from the mbox-messages - then click message-move to from the mail menu & "move " them to the folder they're already in - after that they'll be visible in the mail app. actually , choose "move to xxx again" - it saves time. It doesn't matter if you do this to a message that is already visible in mail.
I don't know a quick way to do this - but you can select multiple messages from the library & ctrl-click-open which at least opens a load at once.
moving them in finder, or trying to import from a copy of the folder doesn't help.
There's probably a much easier way - try some serious searching of these discussions.

  • Mac Mail.app V.2.0.5 with OSX server's email don't play well sometimes

I have my own web, FTP, and email server. (OSX 10.4.4 Server). I've been managing my own server services since AppleShare V.6 .So I've done this a few times. I have set up an account for myself "nino" on the server that people email to, you know "[email protected]".
On my laptop I have Mac Mail.app set to log onto my server, via the internet, and to get and send emails. Sounds pretty normal right? Yep, it is except four or five times since I updated the server to 10.4.4., last December, Mac Mail.app simply stops receiving email from my account. Now I'm a pretty busy guy and email is my main source of communications. Plus get a healthy amount of junk mail. So I hear that familiar beep at least twice an hour - usually a lot more. I can always when this tell when this anomaly happens when two hours go by without something arriving in Mac Mail.app.
The catch here is the server is still accepting mail for my account. I can go to web mail, which I have set-up and working fine, and new emails are there! Mac Mail.app simple stops accepting them.
    I have tried:
    restarting both machines
changing the password to my account, on both machines
actually deleting my account from Mac Mail.app, restarting and creating my account again
Nada.... I can see emails adding up in web mail....grrrrrr.
The only way I know to resolve this is to, gulp, delete my account on the Server and set it up again. This seems to work but unless I've answered messages in web mail their gone! Poof. I do like to keep good records by saving and organizing business related emails. So when this happens I'm screwed.
    Any thoughts?

  • Why "Outlook Express" users can't read email from Mail.app ?

Why "Outlook Express" users can't read email from Mail.app ? Any explanation ? Select a good format, that's a good explanation, but i can't know each time if our recipients use "Outlook Express".

There are no completely bug free email clients including the Mail.app and Outlook has its share of bugs for such an old/mature email clients and some glaring ones that MS has been aware of for a long time but has chosen not to do anything about since these do not affect exchanging email with other Outlook users.
Outlook has always had problems with Mail's RTF and the degree depending on the Windows and Outlook versions used by the recipient.

  • Hotmail on iPhone Or ipod touch mail app!!!

Hey people. Im only making this post to help people out. After a lot of research and a lucky unxpected find, i discovered a way to access your hotmail account on your maill.app
First you need to sign up for a GMX.com mail account (completely free, and EXCELLENT)
Then once inside, you need to add a mail collector account, suck as your hotmail
(The mail collector feature in GMX accesses your Hotmail account and downloads your email messages into the mail collector folder inside of your GMX mail account.)
(Inside the iphone mail app, once you set up your gmx account to work with it, you will have access to a folder that is named: "Mail Collector" and inside will be all of your hotmail emails.)
After you have signed up for a GMX email account, here is how to configure it with the Mail app:
    1. Under Settings, select "Mail", "Add Account", "Other", then "IMAP" or "POP" and use the following settings:
    Name: enter your name
Address: your full GMX email address
    Description: GMX
    Incoming Mail Server
Host Name: imap.gmx.com (when you're using IMAP) or
Host Name: pop.gmx.com (when you're using POP)
User Name: your full GMX email address
    Password: your GMX password
    Outgoing Mail Server
    Host Name: mail.gmx.com
User Name: your full GMX email address
    Password: your GMX password
    Advanced
Use SSL: Off (SSL only works with incoming not going, but to be sure, turn it off for both)
    Authentication: Password (both incoming/outgoing)
Server port: 110 (incoming) and 25 (outgoing)
If you selected to use IMAP, you can map iPod Touch folders to GMX IMAP folders. Test first if the default mapping works before changing anything.
To change the mappings, got to Settings>Mail>GMX.
    - Select "Advanced"
    - Select "Drafts Mailbox" and set it to "On the server > [GMX] Drafts"
    c. Select "Sent Mailbox" and set it to "On the server > [GMX] Sent Mail"
    d. Select "Deleted Mailbox" and set it to "On the server > [GMX] Trash"
Click on "Advanced" each time to return to the prior menu after choosing a folder

It may have just been that this was the first sync. The messages are all there, but are in reverse order with the oldest message at the top of the stack. It is neither a small nor orderly stack. It may have been because it was the initial sync and this was the order that GMX pulled them from hotmail.
Then there is the lag. I guess that you, like me, tested this out by sending yourself some messages "just to make sure it worked". How long did you find the lag between sending something to hotmail and recieving it through GMX? Right now, I'm sitting on 15 minutes since I sent one and it still has not arived in the GMX collector.
Edit: Never mind on that last part. Seems Hotmail thinks something coming from my gmail account is spam. Twice. But not the ones for blue pills, lotteries from Europe, financially challenged nobility from African nations, or the young lady that wants to get to know me better if only I would stop by her site and see her new pictures.
    Thoughts?

  • Mail.app leaks memory

Mail.app is allocating memory until it can't find anything left. Within 15 minutes after startup it already used 415MB. Keep it running a little longer and it will grow to 1.4GB and my Mac stalls, because I also have a VMWare running and I only have 3GB.
I already filed a bug, but I didn't hear from it yet. Anyone having the same experience?

So I seem to be consistently having the memory consumption increase with Mail too. I have restarted numerous time, all to no avail.
I have the frequency of the check for email set to "Every minute"; not sure if this has to do with it. My mail account is connecting to a Microsoft Exchange Server.
iCal also freaked out on my this morning--the memory usage reached 1.25GB of RAM--it has since gotten back in line after a restart. It is now holding steady at 46MB.
    Any other suggestions out that?
Any official word on this? I'm willing to provide diagnostic data/log if any Apple folks are interested.
    Thanks.

  • Ipad: all my apple apps ( mail, safari, itunes..) fail to open and stay in background

Ipad: all my apple apps ( mail, safari, itunes..) fail to open and stay in background

If you double click on the home button, that opens the recents tray and you can see all of the apps you have recently used. Click on one of those app icons when you have that tray open and the app should start up.
If you just click the home button again when the recents tray is open, it will take you back to the home screen and you will be back where you started.

  • Background app refresh not working mail app

I have an Iphone 4 with the latest IOS7. Background app refresh is on but it's not working, at least for Mail and Mailbox app. I already tried reseting all settings and restarting.
This is what I do to test if it's working.
    1) I send myself a test email
    2) I wait to see if I get the badge count update (I get it in mailbox but I dont get it in Mail app)
    3) I put the phone in airplane mode
    4) I open the apps to see If the test email was download while I was on wifi and it's not there.
Also it's very strange that my mail app badge count doesn't get updated...

So here is what I ended up doing.
I did a fresh restore and logged into my icloud. I waited for all my calendars, contacts, reminders, ect. to sync and turned off icloud but selected the option to keep that data on my phone. Then I created a new icloud account and waited for the new data to sync to my new icloud. After that I performed another fresh restore but this time I logged into my new icloud. I downloaded "Newsify" again and waited for it to do the background app refresh and it did :). It turns out that it stopped doing it and it was the app the whole time of just buggy ios 7 so I restored from the backup I did before all of this and end of sotrie.
