Mail.app using Day of the Year for date stamps.  Whaaaat?

Here's a new one, for me anyway:
It seems all of my emails in the mail.app have suddenly been stamped with dates that use the day of the year, rather than day of the month, i.e:
37 February, 2011, instead of 6 February, 2011.
This date format appears in both the Viewer Window and Message Headers, and is seen in both sent/received dates, on all saved/new messages (all the way back to a few from 2001) and in both of the mail.app accounts I use: one straight-up gmail, the other a worldshare.net address, also using the Gmail server.
This behavior is not present when reading through webmail, nor is it a problem on my iPod Touch.
Any thoughts?
Thanks.

It was all in Language and Text pref pane. I was pulling day of year, rather than day of month.
Big ups to ibook_Steve over at MacNN!

On my IPad 2 home screen, the mail app used to indicate the number of new messages with a number in a red circle, next to the app.  This has vanished, I think about the same time as when I upgraded to the new OS.  Does anyone know why and how to restore this feature?

  • Day of the year

How can I view the day of the year for a date? For example, if August 15 is day 267. Thanks.

    Hi Gregory,
If you don't mind having it as an event, you could make a new calendar and have an event on each day with the day number as it's title. I'd use an Applescript to do this myself.
Something like this (copy into Script Editor & click RUN):
set myYear to year of (current date)
set myDate to date ("1/1/" & myYear)
    set myCount to 1
    tell application "iCal"
    make new calendar with properties {name:"My Day Numbers"}
    repeat
    set myDay to make new event at the end of events of calendar "My Day Numbers" with properties {summary:("Day " & myCount), start date:myDate, end date:(myDate + 1 * hours)}
set allday event of myDay to true
set myCount to myCount + 1
set myDate to myDate + 1 * days
if year of myDate is not myYear then exit repeat
    end repeat
    end tell
display dialog "'My Day Numbers' calendar added for " & myYear buttons {"OK"} default button 1
    Best wishes

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

My iPhone 5 suddenly stopped opening the Apple Mail app.  It had worked flawlessly for years, but just stopped.  It worked on my iPad, and of course on the computer.  What's going on, and how do I fix it?  I've turned the phone on and off several times, soft reset several times.  There was no change in any settings when this happened, nor any new apps were added.  Thank you for any help you can give.

Does it not work either way? Sending and receiving? Did you check the settings and make sure that nothing has changed? If you can receive email, but not send it, check the outgoing mail server setting. Make sure that your username and password are in there.
Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars>Your email account>Account>Outgoing mail server - tap the server name next to SMTP and check in the primary server and make sure your username and password are entered and correct - even if it says that the password is optional.

When I send a photo directly from iPhoto using the Mail app on my iMac, the wrong photo appears on my iPad2 Mail app.  However the correct photo shows if I log into gmail on the iPad2.  I assume there is a glitch with my "Mail" app on the iPad2?  Any suggestions for getting the correct photo to show on iPad2?

Update:  I was able to have the correct photo show in my email as received on my iPad2 by changing a setting on my IMac prior to sending the photo on the email.
On the iMac, I went into iPhoto > Preferences > Email photos using > Mail (in lieu of "iPhoto").  This seems to have corrected the issue.  I'm not sure why.  Now the correct photo shows up when received on my iPad2.

Even though I have LCD font smoothing disabled, Mountain Lion still uses it in PDF views, Safari’s location bar, Mail’s message view, and the dialogs for mounting encrypted disk images. Is there any solution to this problem? Also diabled the Smoothing in the SystemPrefs and also via Terminal. Font smoothing is still there. Very annoying, especially in PDF attachments in Apple Mail.

Try feeding Safari a user-defined CSS file with font-smoothing tweaks (including none). The filename and its filesystem location are arbitrary. Use your favorite coding editor.
Safari > Preferences > Advanced > Style Sheet:

  • Dynamic Variant for First Day of the Year

    Hello All,
When I am trying to change the variant field related to date, i couldnot find out variant attribute for the FIRST DAY OF THE YEAR.
Is it possible to add one more attribute FIRST DAY OF THE YEAR just like attributes which are existing.(Current date, First day of the month .. etc are already existing.)
If it is possible, could anyone please post the procedure for this..?
    Thanks and regards,

    Hi,
unfortunatelly there is not such option.
If this is customer report, You can set initial date in INITIALIZATION event:
    INITIALIZATION.
      CLEAR: so_date, so_date[].
      so_date-sign = 'I'.
      so_date-option = 'GE'.
      so_date-low = sy-datum.
      so_date-low+4(4) = '0101'.
      APPEND so_date.

The mail app badge normally shows the total count of unread emails in all your accounts.  Is there a way to set it so that it only displays the count from one specific mail account?

  • Mail App stops responding and the whole system gets stuck!!!

I'm using an iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core i3 computer with 4GB of RAM.
For the past year or so I have noticed the Mail app stops responding. When I try to close it, it still can't be closed. Even when I try to Force quit it, still it stays the same. When this happens the Safari and other internet based apps can't download data and all I can see is black web pages trying to download data forever.
Then I'm left with the option to restart the computer. When I try to restart the machine. It start closing down all the other running apps and gets stuck when closing down the Mail app. It says "The Mail app does not respond. Please try to close it down Manually" but, still it can't be closed. So I'm only left with the option to shut down the computer by pressing down the power buttion for 4 seconds and start the computer again.
I have been noticing this problem for a while (I think about a year) I was using OS Lion. I recently updated to the new OS X Version 10.9 Mavericks (I believe this is the latest) but, the problem seem to remain unsolved.
    Kind Regards

  • Cannot send email in mail app. using POP account with Wi-Fi

I recently moved to an apartment that only has wireless internet access. Since moving I cannot send email using my POP account, although I can receive email. I was also not able to receive email using my .mac account, but I learned through this forum to change server port to 587 in .mac account and now I can send via .mac account in mail app. But I still cannot sent email with mail app. using my POP account. I changed no settings when I moved, and have never had this problem with cable. Any suggestions?

It all depends on the policy of whoever is the ISP at your new location and the method used by the outgoing (SMTP) server to determine whether you’re a legitimate user.
In an attempt to fight spam, many ISPs restrict the ability to send using an outgoing (SMTP) server not owned by them, usually by blocking port 25 for all traffic outside their own network, which means you cannot send with an SMTP server not owned by them if configured to use that port number. And it may happen the other way around as well, i.e. the outgoing server itself may look at the IP address you’re connecting from and refuse the connection if you’re outside its own network.
Something that often works is changing the outgoing server port to 587 (or whatever alternate port number the outgoing server listens to) instead of 25 and using some form of authentication in Preferences > Accounts > Account Information > Outgoing Mail Server > Server Settings, but two conditions must be satisfied for this change to work: (1) the ISP must not block that port as well AND (2) the outgoing server in question must listen to that port and accept a form of authentication not based on the IP address you’re connecting from.
Independent mail service providers not tied to a particular ISP, such as .Mac and Gmail, do allow authenticated SMTP access on port 587, which is the reason changing the outgoing server port number solves the problem for them if the ISP doesn’t block that port as well.
The following article, for example, describes several ways to address this issue in the case of .Mac, but can be useful for other mail accounts as well (not just .Mac), and applies to all versions of Mac OS X (not just Mac OS X 10.4.2 and earlier as the article states):

  • CVI localtime to get the Day of the Year

I have a vendor supplied driver that needs the day of the year (0-365), minutes, hours, seconds for their board so that it updates itself to the correct time. I am looking at the LabWindows/CVI functions time and localtime to get this information. Those calls are documented in   ...\CVI2010\include\ansi\time.h   with the code contained within  C:\windows\system32\cvirte.dll
when I set up the module within TestStand, I get a message that states:
This function either does not have parameter information in the DLL or user types not recognized by TestStand.
Not a problem. I used the information within time.h to setup the parameters for the function time. That function works fine. The function localtime returns a structure with the individual time elements. I created a Custom Data Type to define the structure. I cannot seem to determine how to define the module for this action so that it will work.
I am including the sequence file, .h file, and the dll to help you understand what I am attempting to acomplish. Perhaps I am not using the correct dll or there is a better option. Any help would be appreciated.
NOTE: I could not attach a DLL so I renamed the extension to LLB. You will need to rename it back to DLL.

    Hey Bill,
I think what might be causing issues is that you are calling directly into the CVI Run-Time Engine, which we do not publish an API for and generally do not intend to be called directly from another application. I would recommend creating a simple DLL in CVI to call the functions you want, such as localtime(). This will allow you to use the CVI function panels and other Help resources to correctly configure your function call. You can simply create a wrapper function which calls localtime and returns the value you are interested in. If you build this wrapper code into a DLL, you should be able to call it from TestStand.
I hope this helps, and let me know if you have any more questions about it!

  • When I edit a contact's email address and then type the name in the Mail App, I see both the new and old address.  Why don't I see only the new email address?

When I edit an email address in the Contacts App, and the type the Contact's name in the Mail App, I get both the old and new contacts.  Why don't I get only the updated email address?

Mail remembers previously used email addresses for a period of time. Those you no longer use will eventually disappear. After you have sent one or two emails to the new address the old address will move below the new one. Then after a period of time not sending to the old address it will disappear. Patience is the key.

  • How do I distribute the apps I buy on the cloud for other users.

How do I distribute the apps I buy on the cloud for other users?

    Hi mlabomb1,
You will not be able to distribute the apps, if you have bought Creative cloud on 1 e-mail address then the owner of that ID will be able to use all the apps on his machine.
If you want 4-5 users to use different application then have them buy separate Creative cloud on their respective Adobe ID's. If they have already bought it then ask them to sign in to https://creative.adobe.com/products and start downloading apps.
    Thanks!

  • How to fix the positions of two Mail.app viewer windows on the screen?

I use Mail.app as my main IMAP Mail application. I work with two Mail viewer windows which I position on the screen so that the upper window shows the Inbox and the lower window the Send-box. The windows are aligned to each other and do not overlap. Fine.
But when I quit Mail.app and open the program again, the windows have forgotten their postions. They "jump" to a new location on the screen. This is in contrast to all other applications I use. Another bad example of window managment is the Mail.app-Preferences window which also does not stick to a given position.
Is this a (known?) bug or does it only happen on my Macs? (two: one in the office, one at home, both running 10.4.6)

I guess the difference is that my description text is longer.
Try this text for a new rule:
"From: blacklisted senders 1 - move to SPAM-blacklisted-addresses"
When you want to see this text completely with the default font, you will need to enlarge the Preferences window for "Rules". After that, click to "Signatures": the window stays at the enlarged width. Then click on any of the other areas in Preferences, and the window goes back to the "normal" width. When you then click on either "Signatures" or "Rules", the Preferences window will stay at the "normal" width (resulting in a truncated display of the rule description text).
Also: when you have moved the Preferences window to a position not covered by a (large) viewer window to access it with a mouse click, close the window and re-open Preferences, it is back to a position covered by the viewer window. Again not accessible when the viewer window is the front-most Mail.app window. BTW: the "Activity viewer" window does a better job in sticking to a fix position.
