Mail app using old Address Book group list

I have a strange problem. Using OS 10.7.2 and iCloud on my mac. I just removed all of the entries from a group contact in Address Book and added new ones. It shows up with the new list when I check my contacts on-line on iCloud.com.
The problem is in Mail.app. When I create a new message and type the group name, it is somehow using an old list of contacts for that group. I deleted everything from the "Previous Recipients" list thinking that would help, but it didn't.
Any idea why Mail is not using the address book correctly?
Thanks.

A computer restart seems to have solved the problem.

  • Mail not using my Address Book on new iMac 10.6.2 - not autofilling ...

I have recently switched to a new iMac with a fresh install of 10.6.2.
My Apple Mail app is not grabbing address book contacts automatically even though I have checked the box to auto-complete addresses. This always used to work on my old machine.
Any ideas why this might be happening ? Should I delete the preference file to rebuild it ? Is there a setting I'm not aware of somewhere else ?
    Thanks,
    Ed

These instructions are for 10.8. In 10.7, the application is called "Address Book."
    Back up all data.
    In Contacts, select
File ▹ Export ▹ Contacts Archive
from the menu bar, and save the archive to your Desktop.
If you use iCloud, disable contact synchronization in the iCloud preference pane. When prompted, click Delete From Mac. Re-enable synchronization. Wait for the contacts to re-synchronize, then test.
If you don't use iCloud, or if the contacts fail to synchronize, delete all contacts, then select
    File ▹ Import…
and import the archive you created. It may take a few seconds for the contacts to be indexed. Test.
If you don't like the results of this procedure, quit the application. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar, copy the text on the line below into the box that opens, and press return:
    ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook
Restore the folder that opens from the backup you made before you started.

  • Address Panel in Mail.app empty but Address Book app full

I recently updated to Mountain Lion. I have a mid-2011 iMac i7. I can't honestly say that it stopped working with the advent of Mountain Lion but it is the most recent change.
When I type a name in the Mail.app new email "To" field it will not read my contacts. The processing lined circle spins over on the right but never does anything. I looked in my contacts app and everything is fine. If I go into the mail.app and go to window->address panel it is empty. I am not using iCloud for contacts on any of my devices.
I tried searching a contact name from spotlight and it shows up under contacts... but hey, like i said, all my contacts are available in the contacts app.

Thunderbird does not have this problem, nor does Postbox. Both are now listed under security settings as having address book access. Mail.app is not listed as having access and there's not an option to add it.

  • How can I make Mail show name of address book group in to field?

In my address book I have a group named "family." When I send email to that group, I want the "to" field to show "family." Instead, it shows the whole list, every name and address. I can put them into the BCC field, but I'd rather just show the group name in the "to" field.

The column divider is still there. Widen the entire window first, then change column width.

  • Address Book Groups - Squrrelmail

    Hello,
We have a OS X Leopard server running the stock installation of squirrelmail, we have not configured any plugins, etc.
Is there a way to allow our users to setup address book groups/lists? I see a few plugins on the squirrelmail website, but they indicate you must have Squirrelmail using a database backend for address books. I do not believe Squirrelmail, on a mac server, uses a database as these plugins require. Now we have users who have built up address books, so switching would be more difficult.
    Does anyone have any thoughts/suggestions?
    Thanks

The suggested resolution essentially said "delete the address book and start over."
Ok, I can see how this will help but... a few questions:
    1. How to I re-load the address book with my 500+ contacts without loosing my groups and all the data? The suggestion in the other discussion doesn't give any guidance on this
    2. What caused the problem to begin with? In other words, how can I prevent it from happening again?
I discovered the syncing problem about the time I did the following three things:
    1. Upgraded to 10.5.2
    2. Upgraded my iPhone (and iTunes) to 1.1.4
    3. Installed Bento (possibly a red herring) -- but it DOES connect to address book

  • Mail not integrated to Address Book?

My Mail and Address Book do not appear to be talking very well....
Out of the box, the mail application does not appear to let me select recipients from the Address Book when composing a message.  I added the "Address Book" button to the toolbar for composing a message. I can click this and bring up the address book, but there is still seemingly no way to select recipients from the Address Book.
I read somewhere that the "auto complete" function is supposed to reach out to Address Book when entering recipients' names in the "To" line. This is not working.  I found some suggestions to go and delete a file in the Library that governs this function. I did that, but it has not worked.
What am I missing?  Why is it so difficult to select people from your address book and send them an email from the Mail application?  Is something broken here or is this a reality for this Mac?  My wife is ready to kill me for throwing out her beloved PC....gotta figure this out!
    Help!

There's something wrong with either your Mail app or your Address Book. I'm betting on the Address Book.
See my advice here: After Lion upgrade, my addressbook does not work++
Also, I realized with iCloud that there is now a Sources folder in the AddressBook and each subfolder has its own addressbook-v22.abcddb index file. You might have to remove those, also.

  • How to turn mailing lists into address book groups

I'm looking for better ways to manage groups in the address book.
I especially need a way add recipients on distribution list for a particular piece of email to a particular group. I have a bunch of implicit groups I've created that way in gmail and I'd like create explicit address book groups out of my (informal) email distribution lists. Mail.app does a good job of downloading the mails via imap or pop, but now I want to select a message and say "Add everyone who received this mail to my alumni [or whatever] group in the address book."
I'm also looking for other ideas, tips, scripts for managing groups in my address book.

OK, how about you open your csv file in Excel and put a tag identifying the custom label in front of each of the items (so eg 05991444555 with label special becomes sp-05991444555), then do your import. Then after the import run an AppleScript to strip the tag and reset the label.

  • Using Address Book Groups in Mail

If I type the name of an Address Book Group in the To: filed of a new Mail message the field will automatically be populated with the email addresses of the members of that Group.
Does anyone know if there's any rhyme or reason to the order that the names appear in? It's certainly not alphabetical.
    Matt

I have seen it asked for before, so you might try adding your voice to OS X Feedback.
Meanwhile, if you REALLY REALLY want it there is a slow painful method ... see what order they appear in, then edit the cards so that the first one listed has the details of the first one you want listed etc. I don't think the UID changes when you edit a card.

  • Add contact from Mail directly to Address Book group?

I am aware of adding a contact to Address Book by Control-clicking the email address, however I would like to add an address directly from Mail to an Address Book group. How is this done?

You first need to open the message(s) that have the addresses you want to add to Address Book, then select the Add Addresses… script from the Mail Scripts folder listed in the Scripts icon in the menu bar (you can activate this by launching the AppleScript Utility.app program in HD/Applications/AppleScript and check the box labelled "Show Script Menu in menu bar" if it isn't already there).
The script will launch and gather the information it needs about those messages, including the To: and From addresses and present them to you in a window; you need only check which ones you want to add and select the group you want them to go to from the drop-down menu it has and click Add or Okay, or whatever it has listed there to execute the script.
Rinse and repeat for each different group of messages you want to add to a specific group.

  • Can I use my Address Book to create a data base and then merge from it to create mailing labels?

Is it possible to use my Address Book to create a data base and then merge from it to create mailing labels?
    Thanks,
    CF

I know one way, it is not elegant but it does work.
    1. Open Thunderbird. (download here: https://www.mozilla.org/EN/thunderbird/)
    2. Click on Address Book.
    3. On the left in the new window is a list of your Address books and groups. Select the one you want.
Your addresses will appear to the right.
    4. In Thunderbird / Tools select Export, and Save as "Comma Separated".
You can open that list of addresses in Excel or in FileMaker Pro. Mail merge proceeds from there.

  • I get an error trying to use Apple Address Book with Word Mail merge - says it cannot open data file?

I am running MS Word 2011, latest Mac OS, and trying to use the Mail Merge option with the Apple Address Book as the data source.
However whenever I select the Apple Address Book as the data source, I get the error "Word was unable to open the data source".
    Anybody got any idea why?
    Thanks for your help

I am guessing you could have solved this little problem already but perhaps someone else may benefit:
I struggled with the same problem - not being able to use Mac Address Book (i.e. Contacts) with Word 2013 for mac mail-merge (on Mountain Lion and, now, on Mavericks) - with the exact same error message reported by Klausngigtoas above .
So I read lots of techie stuff on forums which passed a nice few hours but didn't help. Finally, with slumped, defeated expression, I gave up.
But I just now (such is life) I accidentally stumbled upon the simple solution:
    1. Enter System Preferences and click Security & Privacy.
    2. Select the Privacy tab and then on Contacts on the left hand panel.
    3. In the right hand panel ("Allow the apps below to access your contacts") just tick the Contacts box.
    4. And Voilà! - at least it worked for me - hope it does for you.

  • Importing AOL Address Book/Contact List into Apple Mail Program

This is probably an old and already answered queation, but it has just come up for me. Does anyone know how to export the AOL Address Book/Contact List so it can be imported into the Apple Mail Program? I would like not to have to reinter all the address when I drop AOL.

  • Getting a list of email addresses into address book group

I have an email with a list of 91 addresses. I need to send mail to this list quite often. Now I highlight the list, copy it, and paste it into the new email. Is there a way to transfer the addresses from this email directly to an address book group without having to do it one by one.

    Julia,
I have the same problem. I want to make a group from a list, even from a email header list. My address book has close to 1000 entries. I'm looking for an easier way (like in Eudora with Nicknames) where I can copy and paste (or something!). Anything better than making a card for each and then finding them one by one to add to the group.
Did you ever figure it out? Or get an answer elsewhere since there have been no responses here?
