Mail app - what happens to deleted messages?

Hi guys, so it's first thing in the morning, I'm checking my email, and I accidentally delete a message. After wishing, for the thousandth time, that Mail had an "undo" button, I look in the trash, but it's not there. I open Mac Mail, and look in its trash. Not there. (Isn't that what the trash is for?) It was kind of an important message, and I accidentally deleted it, with seemingly no way to recover. Where did that message go?
Thanks!!
iPod Touch (presumably would also apply to iPhone)
IOS 5.1.1
IMAP
Gmail

Look at the numbers to the right of a message: for example:
The 2▶ with the disclosure triangle  indicates, that there are two messages in this thread and pressing the space bar will advance to the  next message in this list of two messages - at least it does for me. To see all messages in this list, press the triangle behind the "2".

  • How do I set up hotmail in mail app to not mark every message it syncs to be new?

What do you mean it does on your iPhone?
If you download a new email to your computer and read that mail and then download it to the iPhone it sees it as already read? Then maybe the iPhone is using the Hotmail IMAP system? Not sure.

  • Running latest version on OS X and mail.  What happened to the icon labeled "not junk?"  Is there any way to brink it back?

Running latest version on OS X and mail.  What happened to the icon labeled "not junk?"  Is there any way to bring it back?  Thanks in advance!

Make sure your Junk Mail settings are properly set up, right now neither of those messages are marked as Junk Mail.  When Mail identifies an item as Junk Mail or you manually do, it will add the text "Mail thinks this message is Junk Mail" or "You marked this message as Junk Mail" to the message.  Right now this just looks like regular SPAM that you might get that hasn't been properly identified as Junk Mail or when Junk Mail Filtering is no enabled.  Remember Mail needs to learn what is and is not Junk Mail over time, so if you have recently reset your mail settings through a reinstall or the like, it may still be learning.
    1.  Do you have a Junk folder (system created) as one of your mailboxes?  If there is none, it means that Junk Mail filtering is not enabled or has been enabled but the system has yet to identify any mail as Junk.
    2.  If you do have a Junk folder, try dragging a piece of mail into the folder to see if the banner I am referring to appears.  It should.  You should be able to unmark the mail and drag it it back in your inbox.
    3.  If you manually mark the mail as Junk, does it move into the Junk folder and have the banner I am referring to?  It should.
    4.  If any of the above is not happening, first check your mail settings using the guides below:
Mail (Yosemite): Reduce junk mail in your inbox
Mail (Yosemite): If junk mail filters aren’t working correctly
If all seems correct and it's still not working right, try rebuilding your mailbox:
    Mail (Yosemite): Rebuild mailboxes
If none of these help you, please post back and we'll try something else.  Oh, and clear out your Previous Recipients window of any unwanted email addresses.  Anything listed in there is usually ignored by the Junk Mail filters.

  • Mail app keeps re-caching all messages when it starts

    Hello
In past 10 days i have a very big problem which gives me headaches already. The problem is ( i did not change anything!) mail.app keeps re-caching all messages and attachments everytime i start the app. I have over 40.000+ mails so you do the math about how my bandwith eaten by the app. As i said i did not change anything. Anyway after searching dozens of forums and suggestions i did these steps:
    - removed MessageUidsAlreadyDownloaded3 files. No fix alsa mail.app won't create new ones since then
    - removed whole cache, files, folders and accounts and re add them. No fix
    - Clean install of mavericks. No fix
    - Tried other apps like airmail, sparrow. Kinda no fix because airmail wont download whole messages only 1 month period even i choose to have all messages. Sparrow keeps giving error of unable to locate folders on the server. Only my windows thunderbird client works like a charm, there is no any issue at all but i hate windows.
    - some terminal commands before clean install which i really dont remember due to high number of commands. By the way i am using IMAP settings
I really need a help here. I am talking about huge number of mails which are very important for me.
    Thank you

Any clue, how i can add a mail account to apple mail app, but with separate password / pin to open it.
Years ago there was a program called mail switcher which added this functionality, but thats gone.
    cheers
    Tom

They would have to be logged in as separate users in order not to see your account in Mail. Whatever accounts put in Mail under your account will show up. All mail accounts usually have there own user and password. The only thing you can do is to remove the password from Keychain and take the account offline so you don't keep getting prompts for passwords each time it checks for mail.
    Not a great solution.
Best way is to give the other user their own user account with their own mail and enable fast user swithcing to log between the different users if all access the computer frequently.

    Hi, sallymaesmag.
Thank you for visiting Apple Support Communities.
If you are in the Philippines, check to see if the country is changed in the iTunes Store settings on the iOS device.  These steps will show you how to change the preference.
    Change your iTunes Store country
Sign in to the account for the iTunes Store region you'd like to use. TapSettings > iTunes & App Stores > Apple ID: > View Apple ID > Country/Region.
Follow the onscreen process to change your region, agree to the terms and conditions for the region if necessary, and then change your billing information.

  • When I open my "Mail" app it only shows 2 messages when I know there are more.  How do I resolve this?

When I choose my "Mail" app it only shows 2 messages in my inbox when I know there are more.  How do I resolve this?  Thanks.

You need to create HTML signatures for use with the Apple Mail apps. You can't just throw in a logo, it has to be stored on the internet and it's location coded into your signature. You may find a service and an app that helps you do that in the iTunes App Store.

  • Mail.app and purging of moved messages with IMAP accounts?

I REALLY want to like Mail.app but one item that has caused frustration for years is the handling (or lack) of handling of my messages once moved to another folder with IMAP accounts. I would like for Mail.app to purge/expunge the messages from the server automatically when the message is moved but it doesn't seem to complete that transaction until you actually quit out of mail.
I use multiple computers and I don't remember to quit out of Mail.app going from one of my Macs to another and don't want to but I'm getting tired of having to file the messages twice (or more). Is there a way to set Mail.app to do the automatic instant purging (or expunging) of the messages from the originating folders without having to quit out of the application? This seems to be the default behavior for nearly every other mail client I've used, including Entourage and is an option in Outlook and Outlook Express (PC).

same is true with popmail, not just imap.
moreover, i think hitting "remove now" just puts content in your server's trash folder, meaning it's still taking up disk quota and you'll never know till you stop getting mail...

  • EWS: EmailMessage.Body.BodyType can be either of HTML or Text. What happens to RTF messages?

    Hello,
EmailMessage.Body.BodyType can be either of HTML or Text. I know that Outlook can create RTF messages. So what happens when a message includes an RTF body?
    Thank you,

If the Message was created with in Outlook with the RTF editor what happens when you access the Message using EWS is that the Exchange Store will do a onthefly content conversion of Message body and provide you with HTML or Text. Simulary if a Message
is sent with the text only body when you request the HTML body for this message the Exchagne Store will return a converted body for you. If you want the RTF body you can get it from the PR_RTF_COMPRESSED extended property. (if the body was converted from
another format whether it was to or from html to RTF there should be meta tags left in the content to indicate that).
    Cheers
    Glen

  • HT2500 what happens to draft messages after hitting send?

what happens to draft messages after hitting send?

Actually you can change it.  Bring up the message and hit 'Message. > send again > and with the message ready to send you can rephrase it to your hearts content. Then resend.
    Regards
Of course, you also end up with two messages

  • What happened to my messages page on the website and why do i now have integrated messaging?

What happened to my messages page on Verizon's website. I used to be able to sit at the computer and text back and forth to whomever I wanted, just like texting from my phone but now it's gone and now it's been replaced with integrated messaging, which I have no use for. Is there anyway I can get the other messaging page back?

I'm sorry you are no longer able to use the messaging page froggy0412. We are unable to bring back the previous messaging online option. I'm sorry for the inconvenience.

  • What happens to deleted junk mail?

I've a few rules set up to delete junk mail - such as, "if body contains V1agra - delete message", and the junk mail filter is in training mode. Somehow at times I've found that it's deleted messages that it shouldn't have - especially if there's PDFs attached.
I only just now picked up my mail and saw an incoming message with a subject header that would NOT be junk mail, however the email didn't appear in my inbox, nor the junk folder - nor the trash but has been deleted. Oh yeah - my email is set to delete messages from the server…
So question is - what happens to these emails. Are they stored somewhere temporarily that they can be retrieved from? Or is this lost for good? (I've not and WILL not shut down mail yet!)
I know it's a hard task for any piece of software - but mails junk mail filtering is a pointless joke.

Rather than deleting it in rules, move the message to the trash, or, better, the junk mailbox. That way you still have whatever time lapse you have specified Mailbox Behaviours for the account to check on incorrect interpretation.
Why bother with your own rules? You will find it hard to do better than the automatic junk filtering.

  • Why does mail app show over 2,000 messages (not new) but only 10-12 in my inbox?

So I recenly got a new rMBP and have begun using the Mail app. I've had a bunch of problems with Gmail and the app but my my biggest gripe is that it seems to have downloaded over 2,000 messages from the server (of which I have no idea where its getting them because I've deleted pretty much everything in trying to solve this to the extent of completely wiping out my email folders). I wouldn't have such a problem with it except that it seems like its actually downloaded the 2,000+ messages onto my computer, no dobt taking up space (and its mildly annoying to me to always see 2,514 to the right of the "Gmail" folder in the left window)
I have tried emptying my mail completely including emptying the trash+deleting mail account from all apple devices and then restarting them before adding the mail account back.
Looking in random folders to make sure I haven't lost my marbles and theres a stash of emails lurking somewhere...
Again, deleting the accounts, powercycling the apple devices and then setting up mail again (just incase the first three times didn't work) and I'll mention that EVERY time I set up the account it imediately starts downloading the 2,000+ emails all over again (little windw shows up in bottom left counting down how many it has and how many there are left to go).
Any advise would be appreciated- I know its not huge but its driving me crazy!!
Just FYI I'm using the mail app simultaneously on a rMBP, iPad 4, and iPhone 5...

Go to Gmail (on the web) look in the folder named All Mail, they will be there, delete what you want.

  • Email issues after Yosemite upgrade.  Several things are happening, I delete messages only to get a error indicating that I can't delete them or if I do delete them, they reappear sometime later.

I use Apple mail on an IMAC & IMAC Mini.  As I move from one to the other these email issues persist on both.
I try to clean out my email by deleting emails.  I sometimes get an error message indicating I can't delete the message or when I do delete the message, then sometime later or when I go on the other computer these deleted messages reappear.  I am also getting emails from some senders but the actual content belongs to another person.
I had none of these problems prior to upgrading to Yosemite.
    Any suggestions would be helpful.

  • Mail app won't permenently delete mail

It deletes the stuff on the email accounts on the net, but it wont delete stuff its downloaded onto my comp. I select it, and delete it, and then when I come back to the mail app, its there again. Ive tried the erase deleted mail option, but it still shows up the next time i got to the mail app. Any ideas what to do?

Interesting that it works fine in Safe Mode, but the problem returns if you start up normally again. The following is what I usually suggest as a first step when Mail freezes on launch. I wonder whether it’ll work for you as well...
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network, choose Network Port Configurations from the Show popup menu, and make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet appears at the top of the list. Leave checked (enabled) only the port configuration needed to connect to Internet and Built-in Ethernet (in that order if not the same), uncheck (disable) the rest of network port configurations, and see whether that helps — if it doesn’t, turn ON again the ones you want enabled.
Finally, try launching Mail under the following conditions (you may need to force quit it first if it’s running) and post back with your observations:
    1. Holding the Shift (⇧) key down until the main window appears. This tells Mail to not select any mailboxes or load any messages upon start up.
    2. With no Internet connection.
