Mail app will not open at all. I cannot even delete a mail account.  Wondering if daylight savings time has caused an issue.

When I click on the mail app it either immediately crashes and brings me back to the home screen or it opens briefly and tried to download all previous emails and crashes in the middle.  When I try to delete a mail account it says it can't because it is syncing.  I closed mail using the double click (which only shows a black white box) and I have rebooted three times.  The time changed today.  Could it be a bug?

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folders. In OS X 10.9 there are two sandboxes, while in 10.8 there is only one. If you're running a version older than 10.8, this comment isn't applicable.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu.* A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Log out and log back in. Launch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you may have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Repeat with this line:
~/Library/Containers/com.apple.MailServiceAgent
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Mail App will not open, OR quit.

My Mail app will not open, and now when I need to update my mac, it won't because it says the mail app "cancelled restart". Mail app will not open nor close. When I click on "Mail" at the top bar, the "quit" option is in light grey (not clickable). HELP Mail is still accessable on my phone. Is there a way to delte the app all together (with out having to take it in) and re download.

IME, it has always been a flaky app- Mac up to date or not. I've force quit many times. It's an immediate fix but it would be nice if the app worked consistently. Currently, it won't open (which seems new) or close. Of course I will try force quit (easy solution; always has been) but this seems ridiculous. Early 2011 MBP all up to date.

  • Mail App Will Not Open After 10.10.1 Upgrade

A few days ago I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 and ever since my Mail app will not open. It will bounce and show the indicator dot, but no window ever appears.
    Has anyone else encountered this?

    Reinstall Yosemite:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

  • Mail application will not open at all

My Mail app won't open at all. It bounces once and then nothing. I ran the Disk Utility and re-started. I tried opening it with the Shift key down, and tried moving the Mail folder and the preferences files (but it won't open at all, so I don't think that is really relevant anyways). I created another user account and the problem is duplicated in that account. What do I do next? Do I need to re-install the Mail application? How do I do that?
    Many thanks in advance.

What does “I ran the Disk Utility” mean? Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, as well as the latest Security Update released for that version of Mac OS X that included updates for Mail. If you were running Mac OS X 10.3.9, that would be:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Security Update 2007-003 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
I’ve provided a link for Security Update 2007-003 instead of for the latest Security Update because I don’t know for sure whether the latest includes previous security updates — from the file size, it looks like it does, but the documentation doesn’t say so (it does in the case of Security Update 2007-003).
You may also want to read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.

  • Mail app is not opening at all

    Hello
A couple of days ago I restarted my computer. When I tried to open the Mail app, it just bounced once and then stopped. Tried it a few more times and it mostly bounced once then stop but once in a while it will bounce multiple times then stop. I couldn't restart right away so later that day I tried restarting and nothing. The problem still existed.
I finally get some time to work on the problem between yesterday and today. I've tried deleting the com.apple.mail.plist (actually this was missing when I first went looking for it), deleted ~/Library/Mail and ~/Library/DownloadedMail (or whatever). Mail still wouldn't open.
Then I opened up a terminal and found any reference to "Mail" in my home directory and selectively deleted those as well (not in any stupid, blind way). The problem still persisted.
I decide, ok fine let's fire up time machine. Maybe /Applications/Mail.app got corrupt? Whatever, so I deleted it and restored the Mail app from 3 weeks ago (March 1st - when I knew it was still working) yet Mail still does not open.
I've completely run out of ideas on what to do next and any input would be greatly appreciated. Is there a way to enable a verbose log so I could figure out why Mail is crashing?
    Thanks!

Hi. I had the same problem today. I downloaded and installed the newest Onyx app, ran it's automation with the mail settings checked, restarted andd all is good. I think it was an issue with the mail envelope index but i'm not sure.
Hope it works for you as well.

  • IMAC Mail App will not open

Hi. I have an iMac (21.5-inch, Mid 2010) using OSX Yosemite. Version is 10.10.2. My MAC mail app hangs instantly it is opened. The app doesn't appear on the screen at all. I need to right click the icon and force quit.
The problem started around 3 weeks ago when I was working in mail and it hung. I had to force quit and since then it won't even open.
I tried Repair permissions in Disk Utililty, Recovery Mode and Repair Disk but to no avail.  Have also downloaded Yosemite 10.10.2 combo and installed over the top of current system but no change.
Very grateful for suggestions on what to do next. I do not have a full system back up however all music, photos and Microsoft Office Docs that I want are backed up on clouds. Can I for instance go back to a previous operating system and go through the upgrades again? How would I do that?

I'd see if you can get it fixed here. Reverting and then upgrading again takes time and you need a good backup.
Revert to a Previous OS X - Yosemite
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Restart, re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

  • MAIL APP will NOT OPEN- NOT RESPONDING/FORCE QUIT

    Macbook Pro 2011
    Using Mavericks OS X 10.95
I don't really use the Mac Mail very often because have always had problems with it so I will tend to use Gmail, Yahoo or whatever service it is.  I cannot even get mail to open at this point.  It just says Application Not Responding and then I force quit. and it still wont open.  The only annoying part is often on websites theres an email link to click and that opens the MAIL application to get that website.
Due to other problems, the Apple Geniuses recently wiped off my computer and made me install a backup so it should be 'fresh' and I wasn't having this happen before.  But then again, installing t he backup has created numerous problems that didnt exist before.  Ive tried rebooting already.  There are no pending software updates.  Everything is up to date except that it is not running Yosemite.

    Do a backup.
• Mail app will not open

I have just tried to change over to the Mail app instead of AOL mail, and I can't get Mail to open. I have installed the 10.4.7 update after repairing permissions, with no apps open. There appears to be no crash log, although I do get the following in the console log with repeated attempts to open Mail:

I'm at a loss. It just doesn't make sense that neither properly reinstalling Mail nor repairing permissions can fix this. Not sure how to proceed about the duplicate fonts, as I don't know that much about font management. Is Mail the only application that's giving you problems?
There is no need to move the preferences file to the Desktop if you want to reinstall Mac OS X using the Archive and Install option -- it would be a good idea to make a backup of the entire home folder first, though.
Reinstalling Mac OS X shouldn't have to be necessary. There has to be a reason why this is happening...
Could it be that you have more than one copy of the Mail application and are trying to open the bad one? Is Mail in the /Applications folder and only there? Have you tried opening Mail by double-clicking on it or just by clicking the icon in the Dock?
In the Finder, go to /Library/Mail/ (i.e. the Mail folder within the Library folder at the root of the boot volume, not the one within your home folder). There should only be an AccountTypes folder there. Do you see something else? Do you see a Bundles folder, in particular?
    Try this:
    1. Go to /Applications/, locate Mail and move it to the Desktop.
    2. Go to /Library/Receipts/, locate Mail.pkg and move it to the Desktop.
    3. Reinstall Mail as described in Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4.
    4. Check that a new copy of Mail has been installed in /Applications/ and that a new copy of Mail.pkg has been written to /Library/Receipts/.
    5. Repair permissions.
    6. Reinstall the Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update.
    7. Repair permissions.
