Mail application hangs on launch

When I launch Mail, I can see it connecting to the servers, but it never actually fetches anything new. The connections just hang. The mailboxes are blank. No apparent content.
Usually, when it looks like one account or mailbox is the problem, I rebuild it, but I can't. The application just hangs.

Try a restart.
Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.
Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.
Isolating an issue by using another user account
If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account.  Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

  • Mail application fails to launch

The Mail application fails to launch on my iMac(late09 model/latest Lion loaded) and gives me this message - can anyone advise as to what I can do? I have already reinstalled the iMac Applications Install DVD to no avail.
    Thanks

    Hi ...
    Might be corrupted preferences ...
    Go to ~/Library/Preferences
Move the com.apple.mail.plist file from the Preferences folder to the Desktop.
Try launching Mail. If that helped, move that .plist file to the Trash. If not, move it back to the Preferences folder.
    latest Lion loaded
With Lion 10.7 installed, apps can only be reinstalled using Lion Recovery.  Not from your install disc.

  • Mail application hangs at start

Hi, hoping for some help.  This morning my mail application stopped responding.
The application launched, but never got any further than the Inbox window.  The application did not respond to mouse or keyboard, and I had to force quit to exit.  The application worked fine at COB Friday, but I had recently added a new gmail account.  I tried a number of thing to fix it:
    1) restoring the app from time machine
    no luck.
    2) restoring the plist from time machine
no luck, but after this, Time machine would not accept the restore of the App, error message read:
"Mail" can't be modified or deleted bacause it's required by Mac OS X.
    3) after a good root around posts, looked at the console
    possilby relevant messages were:
18/11/2013 08:47:53.847 Mail[351]: Unable to find message to restore.
    and
18/11/2013 14:05:38.246 System Preferences[292]: MailIAPlugin: Tried to get settings for nonexistent account with uid 28BC38EE-6DC5-45D6-9F9B-B31CFF725FA8
    and
    18/11/2013 14:45:31.270 sandboxd[281]: ([265]) Mail(265) deny file-read-data /Users
    4) the Activity Monitor, meanwhile is telling me that Mail is using 200% of the CPU (and my laptop is running REALLY painfully slowly)
    Ended up
    5)  deleting a POP account that seemed to have a conflict (when I looked in preferences/Mail, it couldn't see the account settings)
and 6) deleting the newly added gmail account.
doesn't sound like much but it between trying to work out what to do next, how to get at the accounts from outside Mail, and doing it, took me all **** day.
So now I have my email back up and working, and have put the POP account back in, no problem.  Restored the missing emails from Time Machine, all good (Heavens bless my new G-tech back up drive).
But the machine is still running really slowly and the fan is going crazy.
What is still wrong and how/where do I look?
Is it worth doing a complete restore or is that overkill?

I've reinstalled the firmware 4.60 , thus softreset ans restore, but no better.
    mail was opening and hanging.
wifi is working (even wpa security), so I choose to use the browser on gmail.
today, after removin the battery one minute, it starts without the e-mail icon...

  • Mail application hangs at loading on C3-00

    hi,
    I have a C3-00 (from france, orange).
It is upgraded to latest firmware 4.60.
I can use wifi on different network, and I can use internet/wap.
the "Communication" application (tweeter and facebook)  is loading nicely
however the "Mail" application seems to freeze at loading... just showing  "Chargem. Mail" (loading Mail) and the envelopp logo, no activity... even is already connecter on wifi (tested on different nw)
anyway I've never set any login/password since it never starts.
is it a known problem? is there a turnarround?

  • Mail Application will not launch

At about the same time MobileMe began, I have been unable to launch my mail application. I click the icon and it bounces, but then it just stops bouncing without the program launching or the mail window opening.
I do not believe it is related to MobileMe, but the timing is coincidental. I have tried Apple Support but the replied with a canned, unrelated, and completely unhelpful answer. It looks like several people have encountered a similar problem, but there does not seem to be any resolution posted.
Please help! I hate the webmail access so much, I am about to drop my .mac account and go gmail!!

  • Application Hangs on Launch

AppleWorks 6 has worked without trouble on my iBook G4 (OS X 10.3.9) for about a year. As of yesterday it hangs on launch when I am in my (administrator) account, but, launches correctly from each of the other three accounts on my iBook. I have tried repairing permissions and ran TechTool Deluxe v 3.0.3 to no avail. Does anyone have an idea on how to correct this problem? Thanks.

Hi Peter, and Welcome to Discussions!
Quit AppleWorks and navigate to: HD > Users > Your Home > Library > Documents > AppleWorks User Data > Starting Points > Recent Items: Move all the items located there, to the trash. They are aliases to all of the documents that you have opened in AW, and will be recreated as you reopen them.
Empty the Trash, and restart AW. You should notice a speedier response.
    Good Luck!

  • Applications Hang at Launch

I'm having a problem launching Applications - any application. When I click on the application icon in my dock, it bounces and bounces but never gets the little white dot that signifies that the application is open. After a while it will stop bouncing. But, then it appears that the system thinks that the application IS open, and I have to Force Quit the application to try to open it again. Applications that open on start-up are fine.
I am running the console and am getting the following reports no matter what application I launch (these particular examples came when I tried to launch the Disk Utility:
    10/19/10 10:09:01 AM com.apple.launchd.peruser.501[94] ([0x0-0x2f02f].com.apple.DiskUtility[295]) Bug: launchdcorelogic.c:5845 (24108):9

I have Verified and Repaired permissions several times. There are three permission repairs that seem to return over and over. It says that it is repairing them, but they still show up on the next scan.
    I am dumbfounded. Please help.

    Ugh! I'm so frustrated!
The problem isn't consistent so it's hard for me to explain what's happening. When I tried to isolate a problem in the prefs, I moved all the prefs to a folder on my desktop, then started moving them over a little at a time and trying to launch apps as I did that. I had only moved over a few prefs when I started having the problem again. So, I moved those prefs back to the desktop, but I still couldn't launch. I kept trying to isolate a problem there, and I couldn't make sense of it - it was all inconsistent. Eventually, I decided to Restore the Prefs from the back up that I did yesterday before all my problems started. That seemed like it might be helping because I was able to get a few apps to launch. But, I was still having trouble with other apps. Sometimes one app wouldn't launch, so I would force quit and try again, and then it would. Sometime an app would launch fine. I would quit and try to relaunch and then it would hang up. Other apps just wouldn't launch at all. I restarted the machine again, and could only get Disk Utility and Safari to launch before I started having problems again. I'm just at a loss. I feel like I'm going to have to restore the whole computer, and I've never done that before. It scares me. What else can I try?
Just an FYI, this is what I get when I repair permission in Disk Utility:
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Deploy.bundle/ Contents/Resources/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar", should be lrwxr-xr-x , they are lrw-r--r-- .
    Repaired "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/A/Resources/Deploy.bundle/ Contents/Resources/JavaPluginCocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar".
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/readconf ig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/Admin.framework/Versions/A/Resources/writecon fig" has been modified and will not be repaired.
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPlugin Cocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar", should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPlugin Cocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/deploy.jar".
    Permissions differ on "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPlugin Cocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/libdeploy.jnilib", should be -rwxr-xr-x , they are lrwxr-xr-x .
    Repaired "System/Library/Frameworks/JavaVM.framework/Versions/1.6.0/Resources/JavaPlugin Cocoa.bundle/Contents/Resources/Java/libdeploy.jnilib".
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent" has been modified and will not be repaired.
It's exactly the same every single time I have run Repair Permissions. I don't know if it means anything, but I think it's weird that I get those exact same permissions with problems every time, and it says that it repairs them every time, but they are still there the next time.

  • HT3159 Mail application will not launch

Was trying to shut down the computer and a window said to quit Mail.  I did and it still would not shut down.  Then I tried to launch Mail again and it won't launch but can't figure how to relaunch Mail.

You'll find various approaches to this in this thread:
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5014331?tstart=0
It's kind of long, but there are several solutions here.

  • Mail application fails on launch

I tap my mail app, it starts to open, then immediately shuts down. Anyone know how to fix this?

Immediately shutting down indicates the app is crashing for some reason.
Try resetting the iPad.  Hold the on/off and home buttons together for about 10 seconds till the Apple logo appears.
That might solve it.  If not, restore the iPad by plugging it in to iTunes, letting it sync, then choosing "Restore" from the iPad's summary page in iTunes.

  • Applications won't launch, shutdown hangs

    Hi All,
I've seen posts with similar symptoms to mine, but none with a fix:
Everything was running fine, then all of a sudden applications refused to launch. First it was System Preferences, then Console.app, then SubEthaEdit - nothing could be launched any more. Running applications worked fine, so at least I was able to save my work and shut all apps down.
I had a Terminal.app running and was able to have a look at which processes were running, etc. but couldn't see anything that looked like a rogue process or anything which was hogging resources.
Next, I tried to HUP the Dock, but it went and didn't come back.
I then tried to log out. Everything was closed, but the background remained and the system did not log out.
The only button that still worked was the power button - it brought up the restart / shutdown menu fine. But when I selected either restart or shutdown, nothing happened. The mouse was working fine also BTW. I also noticed that while I was able to change the volume with the usual keys, the see-through icons didn't appear - only the 'ping' sound was made.
The system came up fine, and everything appears to be working at the moment - no problems launching apps etc.
I checked the Console and didn't see anything particularly out of the ordinary. I saw spindump entries for all the apps I'd tried to launch, but which didn't (they were added to the Dock, but without the 'active' dot underneath them, and I was able to context-click and Force Quit them from the Dock). I also saw hang logs for each app corresponding to the time when they wouldn't launch.
The only slightly weird thing that happened before all the crazy madness was that my AirPort connection suddenly went wobbly. It lost its connection all together and it took a while for me to convince it to come back online. The AirPort Utility didn't show either base station reporting any problems (I have a TimeCapsule as the main base station and an AirPort Express extending that network out to the office). The system was trying to perform a backup at the time - not sure if that's what was causing the weirdness.
Next time it happens, I might try HUPping the window server or something to see what happens then. Of course, I'm hoping it doesn't happen again
Any hints / tips / experiences / etc more than welcome
    Cheers,
    C

I have now added back all the items which were in my original Logins List except for "Spark Daemon" (a shortcuts manager), which I no longer have on my system. Leopard appears to be running fine now. Perhaps populating the list again was all that was needed.

  • Mail app won't launch: "No Info.plist file in application bundle..."

    Hi -
I'm running 10.6.8 on an Intel iMac and haven't used Mail in a long time.  I tried to start it today and it won't launch.  I opened the Package Contents for the app from the Finder, and double clicked the Mail executable.  It launched in a Terminal window and gave the following error message:
Last login: Thu May 24 12:17:01 on ttys000
    /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/Mail ; exit;
    imac:~ Bill$ /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/Mail ; exit;

    logout
I looked and there is a file called Info.plist in the folder and it even has the string NSPrincipalClass in it.  Beyond that, I am clueless!
    Any help much appreciated!

I would download and run the OS X 10.6.8 Combo update.

  • Mail application keeps needing set up every time I try and launch

Help! Since I restarted my machine this morning, the mail application has deleted all my mail, with folders twice. I've lost everything except for the mail kept on the server for the last week. Most worryingly I've lost my eticket for a flight next week. What do I do and where should my live preferences be kept as I seem to have a surplus of user ids? Any help gratefully received!

  • Mail app doesn't launch

    my mail app doesn't launch
    using Lion

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports for crash reports related to the process. The report name starts with the name of the crashed process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Incoming messages issues with Mail application

I'm using an email account attached to my internet company and set up with the "Mail Application" on my Mac. For the past week, When I turn "Mail" on, the Mail Activity window would show me the incoming message in progress, ex: 1 out of 26. The process would move forward showing also the speed of the reception (KB/s) and for no reason it would stop in the middle and stop receiving any email. It would basically freeze and I have to quit Mail by "force quit". If I re-open it again, it would be doing the exact same thing and receiving again the first couple emails, always the same one that I already received and freeze in the middle. I basically can't use Mail at all lately. Any idea to fix this problem?
    Thanks

    Hi there,
    cool, I'm not alone...
I can't remember exactly, when the problem started. I guess it was around the 10.5.2 or 10.5.3 update. Before (also in Leopard) Mail worked fine.
Now I have to do the following procedure to receive an email (note: I have to repeat this for each email):
    1. Check, if mail is receiving an email (because it never completes receiving on it's own, I'm never notified of the new email).
    2. If Mail is receiving an email (check the Activity window), I have to force quit mail
    3. Launch Mail again, immediately hurrying to the Mailbox menu and setting all accounts to offline.
By now, the email has already been received from the server but not internally marked as such, so staying online would result in fetching the same email again – hanging 'afterwards' included.
    4. Select the Inbox and open the Get Account Info window by right clicking on the Inbox or pressing cmd + i.
    5. Select the corresponding account from the list (I got three POP3 accounts), e.g. the one for which the last email has been received.
    6. Manually remove this email (and only this one) from the server.
    7. Close the Get Account Info window and take all accounts online again.
    8. Check for new mail...
+If I would for example get 4 new emails, I would have to repeat this procedure 4 times.+
Yes, I'm not happy about it.
*I already did the following (using hints from other threads):*
    Remove Mail.app, and /Library/Mail/
Installing Mail.app and the /Library/Mail/ folder again from the 10.5.0 DVD using Pacifist.
Updating the former installation with the 10.5.6 Combo update
Installing the Mail Update 10.5.6 afterwards
    Removing the ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
    Restart
Launch Mail, setting up all accounts from scratch
    Create a new user
Open Mail, setting up a new account
    Reset Power Management
*So far, nothing did solve the problem.*
Next would be Archive and Install Mac OS X but I currently don't have the time for that procedure.
I have two Mac Pros (one at work, one at home) who both have this issue.
I believe, it's a bug though and will send this text to Apple via "Provide Mail Feedback" in Mail's Mail menu.
