Mail application will not load

Fairly often when I search for an email I get a message "Can't load Mail. There was a problem loading the application." This is not acceptable!

How about some details, guessing isn't very acceptable either.
Who is your email provider (if not Apple)
What version of OS X do you have
What troubleshooting steps have you taken so far (if any)
Just so you know, we are volunteers giving our time to try and help, not Apple employees.

  • HT4623 I updated to iOS 6.1, now the mail application will not load. My settings for each email account are still in there, I have synched several times, and rebooted several times. Sill nothing. Why is there no support for upgrade issues ??

I refuse to pay for support for an issue caused by an upgrade. That is just ridiculous.

I'm having the exact same problem.  When I select an email the mail application pauses for a couple seconds, the screen goes black and then I go to the home screen.  Have you found anything more on this issue?  Didn't have this problem before upgrading to 6.1.

  • Mail application will not open

My mail application quit opening a few weeks ago. When I try to open it with the icon on the dock and in the finder the screen just blinks. Even my computer savvy wife cant figure it out. My next stop is the genius bar unless there are some geniuses here. I can still get mail via .mac log in but cannot send links or documents as the OS mail application will not open when I need to send them.
    Any suggestions????

I would take your OS X installation disc and insert it in the drive, then restart the Mac and hold down the C key until you see the spinning cursor on screen. When it finishes loading, select Disk Utility from the Installer menu and first Repair Disk, then Repair Permissions, then reboot from your HD, eject the OS X disc and try Mail again.
If that doesn't work, then the best thing in terms of time and effort would be to do an Archive and Install of OS X 10.5, with the Preserve Users and Network Settings option. This will install a new copy of 10.5, while preserving all of your current folders and applications, and moving all the old ones to a folder named Previous System. You can then use Software Update to bring it current to 10.5.3, run Repair Permissions when that's done, then Mail should work normally again. Once you've confirmed that and that all your other programs and files are intact and working, you can delete the Previous System folder.

  • Mail application will not answer

    Mail application will not answer.
Lately I tried to solve a problem concerning Scandinavian letters. The thing is that Scandinavian letters in 'rich text' with Tiger Mail sometimes show up like Chinese signs or reversed questionmarks in Windows-recipients' mail.
Tom Gewecke explained it is due to two bugs in mailprogram in outdated MS Outlook.
I did what suggested. One of the suggesstions was to set Mail's default encoding to UTF-8. To do this I had to open Utilities/Terminal and type:
    'defaults write com.apple.mail NSPreferredMailCharset "UTF-8"'
I also put in a dingbat character in every mail to WIN-recipients, which was another suggestion to force MS Outlok to identify and use UTF-8.
This may have solved the problem so far. I think so.
It may be a coincidence. But after a day or so my Mail app. have troubled me ever since.
The application will not answer. It will not show the mails in the mailboxes.
I can't read og send mails. I can't quit the application, but have to force-quit
The connection to the internet is OK. Window/Mail-doctor shows there is connection to the internet. But in the Window/Activity the view shows that the activity is blocked.
    Please, anyone?!

    Hi again David.
Thankyou for you support so far. Had to sleep and do stuff … problem transformed:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Move the entire Mail folder out of
~/Library/ -- be sure to not overwrite the
    backup copy you did before.
    3. Open Mail. If any of your POP accounts is
configured to remove messages from the server right
away, either tell Mail to go offline immediately
after opening it, or shut down your Internet
connection before opening Mail. Then, configure the
account to leave Mail on the server for some time, so
that we can later get rid of the newly created Mail
    folder without losing anything.
    Post back with your observations.
:: I have done the three steps.
:: Then I moved back all my original mailboxes to the Mail-folder just to find out that all the messages in them will not load in Mail app. when I open it. I have all my original named mailboxes visible in Mail, but the content of messages will not show.
:: Other features in Mail are now at work: it opens and closes, I receive, send etc.
:: In ~/User/Library/Mail/Mailboxes on the other hand I find all the earlier recorded messages as .emls-files. But they don't show in Mail app.
:: Then I startede to import my messages from a copy of the removed and back-moved Mail-folder now placed on my external HD. This is extremely slow. Mail app. crashes again and again. Maybe because I have a huge pile of messages (more than 30.000).
:: If I divide each of Message-folder in my Mailboxes in the Mail-folder into smaller portions of messages I can succeed in importing them, 5 by 5 or 10 by 10. This off course is very, very time-consuming.
:: Lately the Import-folder generated by import in Mail app. disappeared! Again and agian it does not show by import. So I can't use this feature at the moment. Why does it disappear?
:: So how can I make the messages — which are present in the in ~/User/Library/… — visible in Mail app. again?
:: How can I make a better record and archive-system of my messages, maybe year by year (without having to save each one of them as RTF-files)?
    Thankyou,
    riprap

Some have reported success simply by reinstalling the update.

Or download and apply, or reapply, the 10.6.8 Combo update first, then apply the Security Update again.

I'd suggest starting with the simplest of these fixes, so look them over first.

If you have Webmail access you might check that, sometimes a malformed email can clog the system.
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.
If that doesn't do it and you can afford to redo all your Rules, try these & reboot...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/MessageRules.plist.backup

  • Mail Application will not open after 10.6.8 update

So, I'm currently trying to update my parent's computer and in the process of updating their Mail application it has become unusable.  My computer at home (not my parents computer) ran into the same problem before I updated to Lion and deleting the preferences for Mail solved it.  Plus, I have read previous posts about this similar problem and a typical troubleshooting solution was to delete the Mail preferences.
After all of my software updates (Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and deleting the preferences for Mail, I still receive the same error message when trying to open the application.  "Mail can't be used on this version of mac OS X.  Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications foler on your computer."  My applications folder has not been adjusted, edited or even touched from it's original state in the dock/home folder.
I contacted AppleCare support and they advised me to reformat my computer.  I think that's a little... unneccesary??  It's just Mail that isn't working.  The rest of the applications (e.g. Safari, Address Book, iPhoto, etc.) open just fine.
Anyway, do you have any advice or insight to my problem here?
    Much appreciated!  Thanks!

After a second call to AppleCare, they had advised me differently than before.  Once they found out that my personal computer has Mac OS X Lion installed from the App Store, they suggested I simply upgrade my parents computer to Lion.
So, I used my download from the App Store and upgraded.  It went smoothly, but Mail still will not open properly.  And instead of the original error message, it comes up with this:
"Check with your developer to make sure Mail can work with your version of Mac OS X.  You may need to reinstall the application.  Check if there are any updates available for the application."
How can I re-install just Mail?  A startup disk is not accessible for me right now.  Can I download the latest version of Mail and install it from the Apple.com website?

  • HT4718 I upgraded to Mavericks and my mail application does not load and give an error screen.

Mail application does not work after upgrade to Mavericks.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter the name of the crashed application or process in the Filter text field. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
In the Console window, look under User Diagnostic Reports (not "Diagnostic and Usage Messages") for crash reports related to the crashed process. The report name starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report and post the entire contents — again, the text, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report — they're very long and not helpful.

  • My Mail application will not open a window on my desktop?

Anyone else had this problem of Mail not opening on their desktop after having done a software update- any suggestions how to get it to open? I am on 10.9 OSX operating system now.

Generally, the ikons you'll place on your desktop, (and all of those which reside on the DOCK) will be 'aliases,' which simply direct the machine to follow the path to the Application itself.
Your 'Applications' folder should be visible in the left-hand collum on any open window. Open it. If an Application will open directly it means that the path to the alias was broken and you need to delete it and make a new one, or track down its real location through the finder. Try not to ever place Applications themselves on your desktop.
After 8 days without Mail, I just succeeded at restoring mom's connections on her iMac. I'll be happy to make more suggestions as needed...
