Mail Application will not open after 10.6.8 update

So, I'm currently trying to update my parent's computer and in the process of updating their Mail application it has become unusable.  My computer at home (not my parents computer) ran into the same problem before I updated to Lion and deleting the preferences for Mail solved it.  Plus, I have read previous posts about this similar problem and a typical troubleshooting solution was to delete the Mail preferences.
After all of my software updates (Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and deleting the preferences for Mail, I still receive the same error message when trying to open the application.  "Mail can't be used on this version of mac OS X.  Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications foler on your computer."  My applications folder has not been adjusted, edited or even touched from it's original state in the dock/home folder.
I contacted AppleCare support and they advised me to reformat my computer.  I think that's a little... unneccesary??  It's just Mail that isn't working.  The rest of the applications (e.g. Safari, Address Book, iPhoto, etc.) open just fine.
Anyway, do you have any advice or insight to my problem here?
Much appreciated!  Thanks!

After a second call to AppleCare, they had advised me differently than before.  Once they found out that my personal computer has Mac OS X Lion installed from the App Store, they suggested I simply upgrade my parents computer to Lion.
So, I used my download from the App Store and upgraded.  It went smoothly, but Mail still will not open properly.  And instead of the original error message, it comes up with this:
"Check with your developer to make sure Mail can work with your version of Mac OS X.  You may need to reinstall the application.  Check if there are any updates available for the application."
How can I re-install just Mail?  A startup disk is not accessible for me right now.  Can I download the latest version of Mail and install it from the Apple.com website?

  • Mail application will not open

My mail application quit opening a few weeks ago. When I try to open it with the icon on the dock and in the finder the screen just blinks. Even my computer savvy wife cant figure it out. My next stop is the genius bar unless there are some geniuses here. I can still get mail via .mac log in but cannot send links or documents as the OS mail application will not open when I need to send them.
    Any suggestions????

I would take your OS X installation disc and insert it in the drive, then restart the Mac and hold down the C key until you see the spinning cursor on screen. When it finishes loading, select Disk Utility from the Installer menu and first Repair Disk, then Repair Permissions, then reboot from your HD, eject the OS X disc and try Mail again.
If that doesn't work, then the best thing in terms of time and effort would be to do an Archive and Install of OS X 10.5, with the Preserve Users and Network Settings option. This will install a new copy of 10.5, while preserving all of your current folders and applications, and moving all the old ones to a folder named Previous System. You can then use Software Update to bring it current to 10.5.3, run Repair Permissions when that's done, then Mail should work normally again. Once you've confirmed that and that all your other programs and files are intact and working, you can delete the Previous System folder.

  • Mail App Will Not Open After 10.10.1 Upgrade

A few days ago I upgraded to Yosemite 10.10.1 and ever since my Mail app will not open. It will bounce and show the indicator dot, but no window ever appears.
    Has anyone else encountered this?

    Reinstall Yosemite:
Reinstalling OS X Without Erasing the Drive
Boot to the Recovery HD: Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions: Upon startup select Disk Utility from the main menu. Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions as follows.
When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list.  In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive.  If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the main menu.
Reinstall OS X: Select Reinstall OS X and click on the Continue button.
Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

Some have reported success simply by reinstalling the update.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/DL1586
Or download and apply, or reapply, the 10.6.8 Combo update first, then apply the Security Update again.

I'd suggest starting with the simplest of these fixes, so look them over first.

  • PDF e-mail attachment will not open after FF update

    FF 31 and/or 32
    Outlook or GroupWise fat client
    PDF attachments
After FF updated PDF's were re-associated with FF not the installed PDF program. Used Windows to re associate PDF's to PDF program. No problem, all PDF's open in PDF program UNLESS the PDF is an attachment in an e-mail.
Open e-mail fat client (doesn't matter the client) try and open the PDF and user gets message stating there is no program associated with attachment. Yet, all PDF's still open with correct PDF program as long as they are not in the e-mail. Now here's the really weird part.....
If there are two or more PDF's attachments in the same e-mail the first one will not open but the second, thirds, etc attached PDF's will open with the correct PDF program.
The only temporary solution I have found is to uninstall FF, re-install it and for a 1/2 day the issue goes away. I have not figured out the trigger that resets the issue.
FF is my go-to browser, but since v 31 this has been happening and if it keeps up, I'm switching to Chrome.
Come on Tech Support, help us out with this issue.

Sorry you're having this problem. I think it was previously reported only by Windows XP users.
When you reinstall, were you making Firefox your default browser? Some users have reported that ''not'' making Firefox the default browser was an effective workaround.
However, you may have success with this approach, suggested by a user in another thread, which appears to more thoroughly update the Windows registry:
    # Open Adobe Reader / Acrobat
    # Edit->Preferences
    # In the Categories column click 'General'
    # Near the bottom of the page click the button marked 'Select Default PDF Handler'
    # In the dialog, select 'Adobe Reader XI' (or Adobe Acrobat, as the case may be) and click 'Apply'
    # A Windows Configuration screen will appear. Allow it to do its stuff (takes a few minutes), then restart your computer when prompted.
Does that resolve the issue for you?

  • Applications will not open after 10.5.2

Following install of 10.5.2 via Software Update, many applications (Office 2008, Photoshop, et al) hang and will not open. I downloaded and installed the 343 Meg Combo Updater and still have the same problem. Some applications work and others will not. Anyone else having similar problems?

I had a similar problem after the 10.5.2 and graphics card update, but only my Microsoft Office 2004 apps would no longer launch. They'd bounce a few times in the dock and then disappear.
Uninstalling Unsanity's Application Enhancer (APE) by downloading their installer (http://www.unsanity.net/ape-203.dmg) and running it with the uninstall option, followed by a restart seemed to fix things. I know there have been a lot of problems with APE and 10.5 and I probably should've uninstalled it sooner, but didn't have serious problems till now.

  • Applications Will Not Open after Migration

Purchased new MacBook Pro (10.7.8) last night and used Migration Assistant to transfer applications and documents to new mahine from "old" MacBook Pro running 10.6.8. and things did not go as smoothly as anticipated:
Applications such as Illustrator, InDesign and Word from old MBP will not open on new Machine
Old User Profile came over but the doc displays question marks where Documents and Downloads should be
Old Profile on New MBP does not allow me to change Finder preferneces to display the Hard Drive on the desktop
What have I done wrong and what can I do to correct these issues?
    Any suggestions?

SO - it is possible to move my Creative Suite and other apps over and actually be able to use them or must I do a fresh install?
That depends on the age of those Apps. If they are older, like Word/Office 2004, they will not run on Lion.
There are many version of Adobe Creative Suite. Some run on Lion, newer version back to I think CS3 (but don't quote me on that), and some don't.
Again personally I always do clean fresh installs on new computers. Whether Mac or PC. I have never cared for using anything that copies over old stuff from previous OSs to new computers. I find it makes the new computer like the old computer, IE OLD.
But others use it and find it OK.
The true definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different outcome.
So give it a shot. If you find yourself back where you started when you made the first post then you can always start over.

  • Safari will not open after 10.4.11 update. Was this a Microsoft update???

I would appreciate it if someone could please help. I updated my computer with 10.4.11 and now Safari will not open. I see that many have the same problem and different solutions seem to have helped. I have tried a few but none have worked for me. I have been waiting for Apple to create an update solution to no avail. I feel like I am using Microsoft! I have Safari Enhancer in my Applications. I tried putting that in the trash and opening Safari but it did not help. I am not very tech savvy so if someone could check my error report and offer a detailed solution it would be incredible.
    Thanks,

    Hi Castel
    Welcome to Apple Discussions
I have Safari Enhancer in my Applications. I tried putting that in the trash and opening Safari but it did not help.
Safari Enhancer modifies Safari. If you used in with Safari 2, then there's a good chance some mix-up occurred as the 10.4.11 installer updated Safari from version 2 to 3. Any time you modify an application with a 3rd party item, you are running the risk of problems occurring. Fortunately, there exists a rather straight forward way to make things right.
Have a look at this MacFixit article, which offers suggestions for reinstalling Safari 3. If you have difficulty following these suggested steps, visit an Apple store>Genius Bar if a store is nearby. Someone there will help you reinstall Safari 3.

  • Safari will not open after Oct 14 software update

I updated software on Oct 14th & then shut off my computer for the night. Woke up this morning & Safari will not open. The icon on my dock bounces a few time & then that's it.  What should I do?

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • My Mail application will not open a window on my desktop?

Anyone else had this problem of Mail not opening on their desktop after having done a software update- any suggestions how to get it to open? I am on 10.9 OSX operating system now.

Generally, the ikons you'll place on your desktop, (and all of those which reside on the DOCK) will be 'aliases,' which simply direct the machine to follow the path to the Application itself.
Your 'Applications' folder should be visible in the left-hand collum on any open window. Open it. If an Application will open directly it means that the path to the alias was broken and you need to delete it and make a new one, or track down its real location through the finder. Try not to ever place Applications themselves on your desktop.
After 8 days without Mail, I just succeeded at restoring mom's connections on her iMac. I'll be happy to make more suggestions as needed...

I just bought my MacBook yesterday. I had my mail application open and used command q to quit it. It will not reopen now and need help figuring out why.

  • My mail application will not open, can anyone help?

Hello - when I click on my desktop mail icon, nothing happens. I'm not sure how to fix this and have looked but didn't find the answers, I know it's probably very basic, but would appreciate any help. Thanks!

  • Mail application will not open at all

My Mail app won't open at all. It bounces once and then nothing. I ran the Disk Utility and re-started. I tried opening it with the Shift key down, and tried moving the Mail folder and the preferences files (but it won't open at all, so I don't think that is really relevant anyways). I created another user account and the problem is duplicated in that account. What do I do next? Do I need to re-install the Mail application? How do I do that?
    Many thanks in advance.
    iMac G4   Mac OS X (10.3.8)

What does “I ran the Disk Utility” mean? Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, as well as the latest Security Update released for that version of Mac OS X that included updates for Mail. If you were running Mac OS X 10.3.9, that would be:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
Security Update 2007-003 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
I’ve provided a link for Security Update 2007-003 instead of for the latest Security Update because I don’t know for sure whether the latest includes previous security updates — from the file size, it looks like it does, but the documentation doesn’t say so (it does in the case of Security Update 2007-003).
You may also want to read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • HT2500 Mail application will not open

I have an older macbookpro 10.6.8 and unable to open mail after mail asks to restore email.

Mac OS X v10.6: Mail.app won’t open, or "You can't use this version of Mail…" alert after installing Security Update 2012-004:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4424?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
Fellow user Grant Bennet-Alder offers this solution:
Some users have reported this problem if the Mail Application has been moved out of the top-level /Applications folder, or duplicated in another location.
When the Security Update is done, the old version of Mail is disabled.
    The solution has been to:
    1) make certain Mail is in the /Applications folder
    2) There is no other copy anywhere else.
    3) Once steps 1 and 2 have been done, Manually download and re-apply the Security Update (2012-004) by hand.
    Security Update 2012-004 (Snow Leopard)
If the Mail.app has been LOST, it can be re-installed by applying the 10.6.8 version 1.1 combo update. But this update is quite large and it is usually not necessary:
    Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1
