Mail application wont open?

I just bought a macbook pro and updated the OS X mountain lion software. Everything was fine, I was clearing out my emails from the Mail app and it radnomly closed but the light under it was still on. I tried to quit it multiple time but it would now quit. The light is still on and I cannot open the mail menu either when I click it. Any ideas on how I can fix this? I made a mail copy nd that works fine, the original mail app doe not however. Please help? I'm still so new at all this

You're welcome.
Sometimes Universities have closed networks and require special settings to get outside their network. If you are off campus and still using the same mail account such as gmail, you might have to create another network connection to use outside their network when you aren't on campus. I'm not sure if you are referring to being on their network at the moment or on another network. If you're on campus, then you need to speak with them.
If you are outside of the campus on a regular network, then you still have the wrong configuration. If so, provide the email ISP you are using and either me or someone else might be able to give you the correct info.

It just says check with the developer to make sure Mail works with this version of OS X. you may need to reinstall the application. Be sure to install any updates for the app and OS X.

  • Mail app wont open/ crashes

I turn on my mac this morning and the Mail App wont open, it keeps on crashing.
I tried holding shift key while opening it and the program does open, but when i select a message it crashes again.
    never had this problem before.
There is not current updates available for my mac, so I dont know what it is happening.
    I have a 2.9 GHz Intel Core i5 - 16 GB 1600 MHz DDR3 Machintosh HD , I am running Maverics 10.9.1

    Do a backup.
    Quit Mail.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Go to Library/Containers/com.apple.mail.  Move the folder com.apple.mail to your desktop. You must move the entire folder, not just the contents.
Re-launch Mail and test. If the problem is solved, recreate any required Mail settings and import any emails you want to save from the folder on the desktop. You can then put the folder in the Trash. If the problem remains, return the folder to where you got it replacing the one that is there.

Drag the Safari icon straight up and off the Dock so it goes, "poof" ...
Now click and hold the Safari app in the Applications folder and drag that to the Dock.
See if you can open a webpage in Safari.

You need to provide more information!
    WHAT didn't work?
If you can't boot from the install disk, either you have the wrong disk for your machine or there is a hardware fault.
You could run Apple's Hardware test from the install disk.
If you could boot from the disk and run Disk Utility, what messages did you get?
If DU said it couldn't repair it, you have a choice of buying the more powerful Diskwarrior or doing an "archive and install" or new install. A new fresh install can migrate your data, settings and apps from your back up.

  • Mail OS wont open, it just says "program not answering"

I just intalled the latest update, and now when i click to open mail OS, i wont open the program, i just gives the message "Program not answerin" when i right click on the mail icon.

    I USED THIS PROCESS :
    Get Pacifist.
    Download Safari 5.1.7 for Lion.
    Quit Safari if running.
Install Safari 5.1.7 using Pacifist. Select "Open Package", choose the 5.1.7 dmg from step 2. Click on the "Contents of Safari5.1.7LionManual.pkg", then click "Install" on the toolbar. Choose "Yes" or "Replace" when asked, and wait for it to finish.
Disable the frameworks that were installed by Safari 6 (by renaming them). You will be prompted for your administrator password.$ cd /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks $ sudo mv SafariServices.framework SafariServices.framework.disabled
    Disable additional Safari 6 frameworks (optional, but recommended):$ cd /System/Library/StagedFrameworks/Safari $ sudo mv SafariServices.framework SafariServices.framework.disabled $ sudo mv WebInspector.framework WebInspector.framework.disabled
    Launch Safari.
If it doesn't work, you can re-install Safari 6 from Software Update.

  • Today I tried to shutdown my computer and a window popped up saying that my computer could not shut down because the mail application was open, it wouldn't close, so I used a key combination to force mail to quit and now I can't log in. Help?

Okay, so I have been having trouble with my mail application all week. The window refused to open and would not quit. Today, I tried to shut down my mac and a pop up window told me that I was unable to shutdown because mail was open. After using a key combination, I successfully was able to quit mail with force quit. Then I was able to shut down with out a problem. However, upon rebooting, my computer refused to let me loggin. I put in my password correctly but then the rainbow pinwheel showed up and stalled for a minute and then my screen flashed and the gray screen reappeared, expecting a password. I tried turning it off and back on again with no luck. I also reset my password after reading a similar discussion, but I still can't log in. How can I fix this?

  • Mail program wont open

    Hi all
I have recently reinstalled OSX 10.4.7 after a HD crash and found that although everything is as it was before....the Mail program crashes upon opening. Every 3rd attempt at opening, it takes me through the POP/SMTP setup, but then crashes when it gets to the end. The next 2-3 times it crashes a few seconds after clicking on the icon.
I am a bit bamboozled to be honest??? In the old days of OS 8 and 9 this sort of think often pointed to memory problems...but whole system is running perfectly otherwise (and has 1GB of RAM installed).
Is it possible to reinstall just the Mail application?? I dont wanna have to transfer to a different application (like Outlook etc..) as the Apple Mail is pretty good/easy to use.
    Any advice would be appreciated...
    Thanks
    Steve

CX9, your problem isn't really the same, so it should be no surprise that what you've tried so far didn't work.
Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Mail application as described here:
Custom installs in Mac OS X 10.4
If the version of the system software on your installation disks is earlier than what you're using now (and only in that case), then you must also reinstall the corresponding Combo Update afterwards, to bring the Mail application back in sync with the rest of the system:
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.7 Combo Update for Intel
You may also want to read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.
If you continue experiencing problems after doing all the above, please start a new topic describing them, unless you really believe your problem is the same as the one being discussed in this thread.

  • My Mail icon wont open when i click it

At first it would let me recive my emails now it recives it  just wont open. Help please

That's an easy one to fix. If Mail won't let you quit, use Force Quit instead. Then, perform the sync and download the software that's needed on your device.
This is not an uncommon problem, and Force Quit is a safe option in this case.

  • Mail application wont work

Can anyone PLEASE help me get my mail application work!? I HATE using microsoft entourage mail app. I haven't been able to use my Mail app for ever and I finally want to get it fixed.  For some reason it isn't the same update as everything else... how can I update the JUST mail app? I have tried everything...
    Thanks!

Ok, take a deep breath and relax.  You can custom install Mail directly from the disc that came with your Mac.  After you custom install, use Software Update to update Mail to its current version for your os.
Just launch the installer and click the Continue buttons until you reach the Custom Install screen. Click the triangle next to Applications, click the box next to the application you want to custom install, and click the Install button to install the application. With the Snow Leopard Installer discs the Applications area of the Custom Install screen includes options for installing Address Book, iCal, iChat, iTunes, Mail, Oxford Dictionaries, Safari, and X11.
Other options include Additional Fonts, Language Translations, and Printer Drivers.  If you’d like to reinstall applications that aren’t offered in the Custom Install screen—applications in the Utilities folder or in the Bundled Software folder for example—you can use Pacifist - http://www.charlessoft.com/
To use Pacifist: Insert your Mac OS X Installer disc. Download Pacifist and launch it. In the window that appears click the Open Apple Install Discs button. A window will appear offering you the single choice to look at the OSInstall package. Click OK.
Pacifist will churn away for a bit and then you’ll see a window titled OSInstall.mpkg. In this window you can dig down through the hierarchy of folders to find what you seek or you can enter the name of what you’re after in the Find field and press Return. A drawer appears that lists the names of matching files.  To install an item click the Install button in the upper-left corner of the window. You’ll be prompted for your administrator’s password. Enter it, click OK, and the item will be installed into its proper location on your Mac’s hard drive.

  • Some applications wont open - mail persistently wont respond

Some apps, specifically iTunes, Spotify and mail don't respond when I click on them in the dock. Spotify and iTunes jump up and down suggesting they're opening but eventually they stop jumping but don't open. When I right click it says application not responding.
Mail opens fine on startup (I have it opening automatically) but when I notice a badge showing new mail then click on it to show the app, nothing happens. Right clicking again shows application not responding.
Restarting my mac sorts it out for a while but then after a few hours the problem is there again.

I'd try and do some basic maintenance steps on your HD.
-check the filesystem is intact using disk utility. If there's damage, run disk utility from the Mac OS DVD (from the installer menu select 'utilities>disk utility'.
-repair permissions (again with disk utility).
-clear out caches, with onyx (free download) or something similar.
-open the console application (utilities>console) and look at the log when these applications fail to open. The log ought to indicate why this is the case.
