Mail - attach vs. drag images
I know this has been discussed, but I can't find it.
There is some tech difference in Mail between using "Attach" vs. dragging an image file into an email.
And it might be different on the other end depending on whether the recipient is using Mail or some other program or online mail site, or whether they're using Windows or some other OS, and whether one specified "Windows-friendly attachments" when sending.
(That's at least five questions.)
I ask because I've had it happen - not often - that the Windows recipient can see but not save the image. It may be mostly with some version of Outlook.
How does all of this work?

Mail won't let me drag images into Finder
Here's another one since I installed the updates from Mavericks.
Mail has stopped letting me drag images into Finder, which means that now I have to control click, Save Attachment..., then wade through all of my folders and directories, which is a nuisance! Why has it suddenly stopped allowing me to drag?
Again, only just started doing this today.
I have quit and restarted Mail - did not solve the problem.

How Mail work with image attachements and HTML image ?
Hello,
I'm writing an application that sends html emails with images to Mail.app. When Mail display the mail, everything is okay, images are correctly embedded in html code, using inline attachements.
But there's still a problem : The images are also displayed at the bottom of the email, as file attachements. I know that Mail's template can hide these attachements, but I cannot reproduce it when sending my own emails.
Is there anybody here that already get such problem and find the solution ? (apparently, Windows User get the same problem with Outlook, but they have an API under Windows...I'm using my own email API..)
DavidDavid can you share how you managed to get the inline images to work. I've got the general idea of how to do it. But I do not seem to be able to change the Content-Type to multipart/mix. Can you point me in the right direction. Should the Content-Type definition and everything else be part of the body? Or should some headers (namely the multipart) be defined in the mailto URL format?
In other words do you do: mailto:?subject=test&Content-Type=multipart/mix;%20boundary=myBoundary&body=--m yBoundary etc...
Or id it: mailto:?subject=test&body=Content-Type=multipart/mix;%20boundary=myBoundary%20- -myBoundary etc..
Neither seems to work for me so I am really stuck. But knowing what the right way is would help me figure things out a bit better.

Mail attachment drag and drop issue
Been facing serious mail attachment drag-and-drop issue since 10.8 (if not from 10.7) and was disappointed to find the same behaviour still in 10.9.
When I drag and drop a picture file (from Finder for example) into a message window or onto the Mail.app Dock icon, the system's window management somehow gets confused: my next step is to click on the message window in order to start typing. However, the mouse click causes that very window to escape under all other open applications / windows. Further on, I dig under to find the escapee and click again: once more it escapes. This can go on for a few annoying rounds until gets solved in an unexplainable way. This behaviour in not consistent, but has happens in about 8 cases out of 10.
Apart from Mail.app I do not experience drag and drop issues of any kind.
Anyone else suffering from this?I'd be interested in the answer to this too.
It only just started happening to me a day or so ago, about the time that I think I did an OS upgrade.
I'm on OSX 10.8.2.
Its annoying.
I can drop and drag in Finder but it just affects email. -
Dragging images to desktop unpredictable.
MacPro 3.1 (early 2008)
(3) NEC Monitors - all ATI Video Cards.
Last week i made the jump from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion via Clean Install. Other than having to give up a few apps that do not have an upgrade path, everything has been doing remarkably well so far (much less painful than expected).
One anoying thing I have noticed is that when I drag an image from any application to the desktop, I cannot predict where the icon will show up (i.e. could be on any of my three screens anywhere)? In the past any time I dragged say an attachment from MAIL or say an Image from a Safari Google serach to the desktop, the icon would always appear right under where I released the mouse button. Now I can drag it to the middle of screen 2 and it may pop up in the lower right corner of screen 3 - you just never know? Even sucessive drags of images back-to-back scatters them across all my monitors.
Am I the only one experiencing this?
Any ideas?Do you get a real PNG file or a JPG file that has a .png file extension?

In Mail 3.6 remote images in HTML messages display as blue squares with ? even though checked in viewing references.

The point is that that button should not be there, if the preference setting is as you say. This indicates the preference setting is stuck, and that is what I was trying to help you resolve.
The full purge is done as follows:
Quit Mail, and in the Finder open Home/Library and locate the Mail folder. Control-click over the Mail folder, and choose Duplicate -- then drag the resulting copy to the Desktop for temporary backup. Next, open Home/Library/Preferences and find the com.apple.mail.plist file and drag it to the desktop.
Relaunch Mail, which will open as though new, and when prompted to import anything DECLINE. Instead, re-enter your account info, and Mail will re-discover the account folders for your accounts, and all should be well, after setting preferences as you desire.

Mail attachment saving problem
Hi,
When I tried to save a Mail attachment today I got the following warning:
Mail was unable to save the attachment “File.numbers” to disk. Please verify your downloads folder exists and is writable.
The warning must be wrong because other attachments, even of the same kind, can be saved without problems. I observed that only such files are effected which contain subdirectories like numbers, keynote, etc. and my suspicion is, that the saving problems may come from wrong file reading/writing rights within these subdirectories, that the sender of the Mail may have imposed to prevent unwanted changes to his/her file. May this be so? Otherwise, what else?
(MacOs X 10.5.6, Mail.app 3.5 and, in this particular case, Numbers08)

Nothing at all. No error message but no copying either, and no change in the curser appearance when dragging to the Desktop.
When I go to Mail --> Message --> Forward as Attachment, the attachment in the composer window can be saved like a normal file and has an appropriate size, eg. the desired original file seems to be contained in there. However, I have no Idea how to extract the original .numbers file from that.
Strange, isn't it?

Mail attachement as Blue Lego Brick With Questionmark
Hi,
i installed Parallels Desktop and since then my mail attachements only show as a "Blue Lego Brick With a Questionmark" Before that i could see the files (ie pdf or jpgs) directly below ma written text. This happens in the "sent" and "recieved" mails.
Any help?

I recently had an issue with mail not opening at all this was due to an error with the new safari and the growl application. I was able to get this fixed, but now I have the same blue lego bricks showing up in my emails, for attachments and in some other emails too that display images. I can download attachments just fine. But these blocks are annoying and messing up other email images.

Firefox is copying the text attached to an image, how do I make it stop?
Specifically on a pet website called subeta.net, but I have confirmed reports from friends that it is also doing so on sites such as gaiaonline and neopets.
Basically what's happening is that if you highlight the image for an item from one of these sights and then try to copy and paste, it will paste the text that is attached to the item. I never had this problem with any previous versions of Firefox, and have confirmed for myself that it is Firefox's doing because I have tried the exact same thing on Internet Explorer and where I tried to copy the image it just gave me a few blank spaces, same as the old Firefox used to do.
I have been in contact with the support staff on Subeta, and they have confirmed that users still using older versions of Firefox and other browsers are not having this issue.
So what I need to know is simply this - how can I (if possible) turn this off? I know it doesn't seem like a big deal, but there are certain time-sensitive features of these sites that make the fact that this is happening very, very annoying.I was fine with that... now Firefox doesn't do this... I want the exact opposite...
Anyone knows how to able or disable this stuff about dragging images? -
Drag & Drop - drag image fade effect
I'm attaching drag image using InitializeFromBitmap in IDragSourceHelper and I noticed attached image get some kind of fade-out effect if width exceeds 300px, which itself isn't that bad, considering normal DPI settings. But this 300px isn't scaled with
system DPI, so any drag image that I want to be opaque needs to be tiny.
Is there any way to avoid applying this fade effect, or to make it respect DPI setting?Hi pault36225916,
As per my understanding, you are using Acrobat X and want to add images directly into the PD document (correct me if I am wrong, please).
If so, then you can follow the steps given below:
1. Go to Tools > Content > Edit Object Tool
2. Right-click the page and choose Place Image
3. Choose any of these image formats: bmp, jpeg, gif, pcx, png, jpeg2000 or tiff
4. Select an image file and click open.
A copy of an image file appears on the PDF page with the same resolution as the original one.

Mac and photo E-mail attachment
When I try to send a photo as an E-mail attachment using PSE 11 on my Mac it shows up in the recipients mail as an embedded photo rather then an attachment. Anybody else have this problem or a solution. Thanks
You are very smart Barbara. If I use PSE11 and share a photo as an attachment with an AOL recipient and a Yahoo recipient the AOL recipient gets only and embedded picure in the E-mail whereas the Yahoo recipient gets an embedded image and the attachment. If I don't use PSE and go direct to my mail server and attach the photo and send to the aol person it works fine and they get it as a attachment. So it seems to me that PSE is not zipping and my mail server is and AOL accepts only zipped. I am assuming zipped and compressed mean the same thing. Is my interpretation of what is happening correct? Thanks much.

I've a problem with the e-mail attached generated with a background process.
If I want to automatically send a spool coming from a background job (e.g. a list from MB52), I obtain the follow situation.
In SP01 I can see a spool of 68 pages; in the email I receive, I can see 18 pages; the same happens if I send the mail internally trough the SAP Office.
Can anyone help me with this topic?

MatteoUse the "attach" button to add the picture, then right-click or control-click the picture, and choose "View as icon".
If you want to be extra-sure, go to the "Format" menu and choose "Make Plain Text" (if your only option is "Make Rich Text" then you're already sending a plain text message). But you lose text formatting too if you do this.
But keep in mind that mostly changes your view of the email message. What other people see when they get their message depends on what software they are using to read their email. Some software just displays image attachments, no matter what you do when attaching them.
Also, they can always download the images, even if they are displayed as embedded. Again, it doesn't matter much what you do, it's more an issue of what software the other person is using to read their messages. -

How to run 2 reports to send 1 PDF e-mail attachment instead of 2 e-mails.
I used 9i Reports to create 2 reports in a PDF format. I run these reports from a 9i form using the web.show_document command. XML is used to send the 2 e-mails with the reports.
Is there a way I can combine the running of the reports to make one PDF to created 1 e-mail attachment or run the reports at the same time and attach 2 PDF files to 1 e-mail.
I have no problems running 1 report and sending 1 e-mail attacment!
This is example of the XML used in creating the e-mail:

How to open Mail attachment in different spaces
With Snow Leopard Mail attachment stopped to open in the space to witch I assigned the related application, but keep on opening in the Mail space.
I have Mail assigned to space #1 and, for example, iWork assigned to space #3. With Leopard iWork attachments opened correctly in space #3, whereas with its successor they open in space #1.
I didn't find any option to set this right.
Besides spaces has not worked right since Mac OS X 10.6.0. It happens that even when I open documents from the Finder they open in the wrong space.
Is there any way to make it work fine, as it did with Mac OS 10.5?

The attachment does not open directly. In other words, i do not use href.
The link is having an onclick event, which in turns calls the struts Action class and the response is returned as an attachment.
<a href="#" onclick="javascript:openAttachment(this.value)" value="123">And the value is unique id with which I can find to file to be downloaded.
Again the file I cannot access directly. I get it as byte array, which I put it in to my response.
