Mail attachments & iWork workflow lacking & unfriendly to non Apple users

I've been an apple user for several years now after 20 years behind a PC.
I try to convert as many people as i can to the OSX way but it is often little things like this that will deter would be converts. My father is one that comes to mind. 99% of the people he deals with use Windows machines and he has no end of problems sending them files. Apple are fantastic at receiving and reading other file formats. But when it comes to seamlessly sending files it is somewhat lacking.
The way the Mail app attaches docs could do with some tweaking. Especially in regard to sending attachments to windows users. The chances are that most people will be sending the attachment to a windows user.
Mail needs to detect an iWork filetype and invoke a dialog to ask if it should convert the attached iWork file to a PDF, MS Office doc etc.
This would avoid the inevitable return of email from recipient asking to please send file again as a word or PDF.
For example. Sending a "Pages" file as a PDF from within iWork is easy and has been implemented via the "share menu". This is fine if you are within iWork at the time you decide to email the file to someone. But the issue is that more often than not, people wish to add attachments from within the "Mail " app. People also frequently have to respond to an email from someone asking for a file to be sent. These people are often users of other OS's other than OSX and consequently will not be able to view native "Pages" or "Numbers" files.
Currently if you receive an email from a PC user that require sending back some sort of file you have several options. All of which are unacceptably slow, tedious or ineffective.
Option 1.
Is to simply reply and send the native "Pages" or "Numbers" file. This will invariable result in a response asking you to send in a compatible format. i.e. word, excell or PDF.
Option 2.
Is to respond to the sender informing that you will send the file in the following email. This is tedious as it requires you to send two emails as well as open the iWork application and appropriate document. Click Share/As PDF and then compose the second email.
Option 3.
Is to reply to the sender but before sending open iWork, export as PDF to a temporary location, attach this file to the email, send email. delete temporary file. Again. very tedious…
I truly hope this generates the discussion and attention from Apple i believe it deserves.

it sound like a great idea. you should send the idea to apple! Witch you can do by going to http://www.apple.com/feedback/ .
I know it's not what you want; but if you go to print. There is an option inside the print dialog box to email PDF. it's hidden under the little black arrow on the PDF button.
BTW have you tried share by iworks.com? I love it

  • TS5185 My IPAD will not send messages to non APPLE users.

Today, Christmas Day, while trying to send a message my IPAD wanted me to turn on iMessage. There was no option not to do this. After it was turned on I could no longer send messages to non Apple users. After reading online that I could set send SMS on my IPHONE I did. Now I guess it send everything as an SMS message. Now my IPAD will not send messages to non Apple users. I guess Apple wants us to pick our friends only if the use Apple products. This is about as stupid as it gets. They want us to only communicate with Apple users. The only other option is to turn the feature off. Why have iMessage in the first place.
So my situation is I can send SMS Messages on my IPHONE. I cannot send any messages to non Apple users on my IPAD and iMessages to my Apple users.
This kind of stupidity is why I switched from Windows to Apple in the first place. Don't they test anything out anymore at Apple?

Please don't take this the wrong way, but I think that you might be doing something wrong.
Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity - Apple Support
To use Continuity for SMS and MMS with your iPhone and your Mac, iPad or iPod touch
Your iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch need to use iOS 8.1, and your Mac needs to use OS X Yosemite.
Sign in to iMessage on your iPhone, your other iOS devices, and your Mac using the same Apple ID.
    On your iPhone:
Go to Settings > Messages > Send & Receive > You Can Be Reached By, and add a check to both your phone number and email address.
Go to Messages > Text Message Forwarding, and enable the device(s) you would like to forward messages to.
Your Mac, iPad, or iPod touch will display a code. Enter this code on your iPhone to verify the SMS feature.

  • Send iMessages to non apple users with my iPad air

My macbook air is intermittent in sending iMessages to non apple users. Also, when it does work, it does not show the name of the contact even though they are in my contact book.

You cannot send texts from an iPad.

  • I thought that messenger could be used now to contact non Apple users too i.e. texting or calling?

I was given to understand that with Yosemite, we could now text and call Non Apple Users. Have tried messaging my son and alas it didn't work. Am I missing something?..

    Howdy jablinksi55,
If you are unable to send SMS/MMS messages to non Apple phones, I would recommend double checking to verify that you have Continuity setup correctly on both the Mac and your Phone:
Connect your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Mac using Continuity - Apple Support
To use Continuity for SMS and MMS on your iPad, iPod touch, and Mac:
Update your iPhone to iOS 8.1 (when available).
Enable iMessage on your Mac and iOS devices.
On your iPhone, go to Settings > Messages and turn on Text Message Forwarding.
Your iPad, iPod touch, or Mac will display a code you can enter on your iPhone to verify the SMS and MMS feature.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    All the very best,
    Sterling

  • Why can't iPad mini send text to non apple users????? I wish I knew this before purchase

Why can't iPad mini send text to non apple users????? I wish I knew this before purchase

iMessage is from Apple to communicate with other Apple devices.
iPad is not a phone and does not have SMS/MMS services from a carrier. There are apps that can do this, search the App Store.

  • Can iMessage be used with non iOS 5 users, ie non-apple users. My new i-pad 2 error message says these contacts are not recognized by imessage when I try to text some of these contacts.

Can iMessage be used with non iOS 5 users, ie non-apple users?
My new i-pad 2 error message says these contacts are not recognized by imessage when I try to send them a text.

So that means that I can send text messages through my i-phone to reach non iOS 5 users, but not through my i-pad 2.

That setting is only related to iMessage. It causes iMessages to be resent as SMS if iMessage fails.

  • Sharing i cloud calendar with non apple users

Hi.  I want to share my icloud calendar with non apple users.  I went into i cloud settings clicked the calendars I wanted to share and sent the invites.  All good so far.  However, the people I have invited can find no way to access them as they do not have i cloud accounts (which it keeps asking for) and are not apple users.  help?

Are you asking about the file format for non-Apple PC's or the best way to physically share the slideshow file or are you asking about sharing with people that don;t have a computer at all?
Once you create the slide show in Aperture you will need to export it. You can  pick a number of formats and uses during export. The easiest way would be to export for YouTube. Once the export is finished you can upload the file to YouTube and give all your friends and family the URL to play it.
If you want to deliver a file depending on the software they have on the PC you could use the .mov file format. This requires Quick Time to play it but there is a free Quick Time player for windows available from Apple.
If you want to create a DVD to play on a standard DVD player you will need to get a hold of DVD aurhoring  software. Apple use to include the software with iLife but stopped doing that a while back. If you're looking to make a video DVD post back.

  • When I attach a document and send as an email, non apple users can not open it?

For my business I have to send invoices to customers, When I attach the invoice to an email non apple uses can not open the file? why is this.
I have tried to copy and paste the invoice to body of email and when they get it it appears as a question mark in a box?
    how can I fix this?

    Couple of thoughts.
When you have the Mail compose window up, there should be a row of icons along the top right side. One of these is a paperclip for attachments. Click it, and check the Send Windows-Friendly Attachments. This will help for non-Mac Mail recipients. Ultimately, it will be their email system, and how it is configured that will determine how their attachments arrive — not you.
Send your invoices as PDF, not Pages, or Word content. Since you don't mention your operating system or release of Pages, I will cover the bases here:
    Pages '09
One can use the Share menu to send a PDF via Mail. It does the export to PDF, opens Mail, and attaches the PDF. (Broken in Yosemite).
File ▸ Export ▸ PDF…, and then drag/drop the PDF into a Mail compose Window. If document size, right-click on it and choose View as Icon.
    Pages v5
On the right-side of the Toolbar, there is a Share icon. Choose Send a Copy > Email > PDF. This auto-attaches to a new Mail compose window.
File ▸ Export To ▸ PDF… . Same as Pages '09, second bullet.

  • Since OS X Yosemite upgrade, cannot share document from pages in word format. Therefore document cannot be opened by non apple user.  How do I get around this please?

Since the OS X Yosemite 10.10.2 update to my iMac (27 inch, Mid 2010) , I can no longer "share" a document from Pages in word format via email.  It can be sent as an att but then as "Pages"  cannot be accessed by a non apple receiver.  Please what is the answer, the old method was fast, simple and efficient.
Out of my depth appreciate some help.

Are you using the File > Export function? It will deposit a Word document onto your desktop (or any folder you choose) and then you can attach it to your email.

  • IPad with wifi only cannot send sms or mms to non apple users. Operating system is 8.1.3

I am using an iPad 2 with iOS 8.1.3. I was told that with this operating system, I would be able to send sms or mms to non-iso users. I was able to do so when I originally upgraded to 8.1.3, but am no longer able to send. The person's name comes up in red and there is an exclamation point.

An iPad cannot natively send an SMS. The SMS text protocol sends its data within the voice channel spectrum of a cell phone voice connection. So, only a cell phone can actually send SMS texts, and only over a cellular voice connection.
If you were doing it before, you must have been using an app. There are apps that will allow you to send SMS texts via cellular providers SMS-email gateways, e.g. as an email to [email protected]

  • Can't send messages from iPad to non-Apple users

After updating my iPad to iOS 7, I can no longer send messages to non-Apple devices.  I used to be able to send and receive text messages from my friends who use Android for example, but now it just says "not delivered".  Is anyone else experiencing this problem or know how to fix it?  By the way, it still works fine on my iPhone.

As far as I know, the native Messages app of the iPad was never able to send or receive SMS messages. SMS messages are a function of the voice portion of the cellular system, and even an iPad with celluler hardware connects only to the data portion of the cellular system.
