Mail attachments show up as code, not document

Hi all,
I've got one client, also using Mac Mail. When they send me attachments (zip files, psd's, etc) the attachment show up as code, not an attachment. If I open the same mail in gmail, it's an attachment. Other clients sending me attachments seem to work fine. Any ideas on a fix, either for me or my client?
Thanks

I am having this problem but it is not caused by spaces in name of attachment. It happens with attachments that have no spaces.
Contrary to theories in another thread, it is not caused by Outlook, either. I can send myself an email with an attachment and it comes back showing the encoded contents of the attachment (or just the contents if it's a text attachment) and raw mime-related text, such as:
--Apple-Mail-26-789943242
Content-Type: text/plain;
charset=US-ASCII;
format=flowed;
delsp=yes
Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit
Someone else blamed it on a corrupt preference. I have fixed it this way before but it came back pretty quickly. Was hoping for a more comprehensive fix or workaround.

Solving Gmail IMAP empty inbox in Apple Mail 5
Man! Took me a long evening and finally a portion of this morning to solve the following issue between my Google Apps Gmail Account synchronized with the Apple Mail 5 client over IMAP...
When creating the account, I had briefly seen my messages in my Google Apps account's inbox, but then the rest of the account folders were displaying the messages, I couldn't see the messages anymore neither in the account's inbox folder nor in the All accounts' combined inbox...
I had found several instructions how to setup the Gmail account and also others complaining about this issue, but nothing to solve it. Of course, start with the following instructions to setup Apple Mail 4, they are the same for the version 5. Nevertheless, if you cannot see the messages in the inbox, despite showing in your gmail account through your favorite browser, check this:
Check in Apple Mail whether you have sub-folders below the inbox (you will have a small little triangle on the left of the inbox icon).
If you have those sub-folders, go to gmail directly and check whether you have label's names which start with inbox/something.
If that's the case, in many cases, they have been created out of previous migration from another client e.g. Outlook migrated to Gmail... they are considered as sub-folders in IMAP and it seems that Apple Mail is lost and cannot retrieve the inbox content in the such case.
So from Gmail, select all related messages tagged with this label and move them to another folder.
Once done, get back to Apple Mail, and select the menu Mailbox - Rebuild
Your inbox should start displaying your messages and same for the combined inboxes
    Enjoy!

  • Mail attachments showing up as garbled inline text (code)

    Running 10.5.6 with Mail 3.5
Receiving attachments to emails is inconsistent. Sometimes a Word document is received with an email just fine. Other times it will be attached by the sender (in the usual manner) but will show up in my email as inline text (just garbled text or code). If the email is sent to my gmail account, the Word doc is fine.
I am not sure what to look for since the symptoms seem to be inconsistent.

I have had the same problem for a long time. What burns me up is that I think I understand it, and there isn't a darn thing I can do about it --- short of using a different email client.
Examine one of these emails with the garbled text in place of attachment. If you're having the same problem I am, then when you use view -> message -> raw source, just before the attachment you will see something like this:
    Content-Disposition: inline;
Multi-part MIME format messages can specify whether their sub-parts are meant to be viewed inline. If it is inline, often Mail will render images and PDF documents as you might expect, but many other file types are rendered as plain text. This even happens with files generated by applications Apple ought to be smarter about, such as iCal. I suppose that from Apple's point of view, the fault lies elsewhere. The sender's email client ought to be smart enough to let them send attachments as attachments. Unfortunately, some mail clients (Thunderbird in particular) seem to always mark outgoing attachments as inline, and Apple Mail does not have the flexibility to treat it in any other way.

  • E mail attachments showing entire text instead of just an icon

can some tell me where to find the settings to keep the attachments in an email as just the icon not the entire text showing in the body
example - when I attach a PDF article to an email the entire text shows in the body instead of just the icon - HELP
    THANKS

Hello, and welcome to the Discussions.
This cannot be changed, except to temporarily View as Icon while composing, and that will have no impact on how the recipient sees the attachment (which is a true attachment even though View in Place is used). To learn how Mail treats single page PDF vs multi-page PDF, read:

  • After deleting several email from my phone, it will not update in Mac Mail and shows message: Messages could not be moved to the mailbox "Trash"

Using Outlook account associated with work. Deletes on iPhone, but not in Mac Mail.  I do not have Outlook for Mac.

Does the Outlook account allow you to store deleted mails on server?
Look under trash and see if "Store deleted messages on the server" is checked

  • Mail attachments showing up as jumbled text

Starting about a month ago, my school's IMAP account in Mail will randomly show just jumbled text when there should be an attachment, and I have to go onto the webmail server to download the attachment. It doesn't happen with my gmail POP account, so I don't know if it's a problem with IMAP versus POP, or a problem with the university's server, or something else.
Any ideas on what I can do to stop this from happening?
EDIT: I have the IMAP account set up on both my iBook and iMac. Oddly, I just noticed that one of the emails that showed the attachment as a jumbled mess of text on my iMac, showed up as the correct excel file attachment on my iBook. Looking back, this seems to happen every once in a while, but usually if one computer shows the attachment as jumbled text, the other does as well.

I don't have an answer but I came here with the same issue. Everyone at my office (20 or so) uses Apple Mail with our Communigate Pro server via IMAP, but I'm the only one who consistently has this problem. I resolved it once by connecting from home over the Internet - all the broken mails fixed themselves by being re-downloaded. However this eats up bandwidth that we can't really spare.

  • Mail Attachments unopenable in Windows or not there

I have my mail set up to always send windows friendly attachments. This however, doesn't always seem to help. Some people complain they can't open it, some say there isn't one and a blackberry user also sayd there is nothing there!
What can I do to unsure that people receive the attachment? Be it a word doc or PDF. Do I need to change some encoding so Windows users can read it?

    David,
If you are composing in Rich Text Format, and especially if you use a Signature with RTF, there is a good chance there is a SPAM filter involved somewhere in the path. This is because RTF will be converted to HTML where two or more fonts are used (including font size even if same font), and the HTML can have two different impacts. First, to Outlook and Outlook Express users, attachments will often appear to be embedded, they have trouble opening them. Secondly, the HTML may trigger a SPAM filter the recipient has in place (sometimes without their intent), and that filter may remove the attachment.
Try using Plain Text messages (including Plain Text Signature) with these people who have had problems getting your attachments.

  • Mail attachments in leopard do not open correctly

I have noticed my mail attachments on my macbook do not open correctly. When I get attachments in mail on my IMac using, Tiger they appear directly under the e-mail. Even quicktime apps. On my macbook, which is using leopard, they usually are in the form of am attachment you must click on which in turn opens another window. Today I got a Merry Christmas wave sent to me. It works fine on my IMac. It is a mime file. On my macbook it doesn't do anything. It just says Merry Christmas. No wave, no turning into Santa, nothing! They are both there in the same spot, (no attachment to click on in the macbook) all my mail preferences are identical, but it doesn't work. Can anyone please tell me why? I am still new to a mac and frustrated. Thanks

Try a Reset [Hold the Home and Sleep/Wake buttons down together for 10 seconds or so (until the Apple logo appears) and then release. The screen will go blank and then power ON again in the normal way.] It is app and data safe!

  • After I updated iOS 5 can´t use the "open with" for mail attachments.

After I updated iOS 5 on my iPad 2, I can not use the "open with" for mail attachments. The option is not appearing.
For example, when I try to open an .wmv attachment the iOS 5 doesn´t show "open with". Before update, I was able to open with "AZUL" software.
    Can anyone help me?

You did say that the option does not appear at all in mail no matter which file type you want to open correct? I can only assume that something went corrupt in the update that affected your settings and that's why this option no longer appears. For experimental purposes, you could try emailing a PDF to yourself and see if that will allow you to use the Open in function in the mail app.
If nobody else jumps into this discussion with a different idea, then maybe you should try restoring your iPad. The best way to do so is - first backup the device - and then restore to factory settings and then you can try restoring from a backup at the end of the process.
However, if one of your settings is corrupt, the backup will be corrupt as well. It may be that you will have to restore to factory settings and then start all over again - adding your apps and content back to the device to get the best results. I would certainly use this process as a last resort. Restoring from a backup maybe all that you need to do.

  • E mail attachments that are deleted show up in all images or all documents; how can I prevent this form happening?

e mail attachments that are deleted seem to still show up in the all images or all documents files; how do I keep this from happening?  If an attachment is deleted I don't want to continue to keep a copy anywhere.  Thanks.

I know this is almost a year later but I have been searching for a solution to the same problem you had. How did you fix this issue? I can see that something pops up on this site right before a transition. Why does that happen and not show in the preview and how do you fix it? Any help is appreciated!

  • Yahoo mail attachments will not show in View Slideshow

receiving mail Yahoo shows two options for attachments - View Slideshow and Download. When trying to View Slideshow, loading gears keeps spinning and spinning but never loads using Firefox 8.0.1
Cache and cookies are cleared regularly and again just now - still no luck. Addons are disabled - still no luck. So Yahoo Customer Care says problem is with Firefox, since it will load on Safari.

I'm with BT Internet which uses Yahoo's Neo Mail and have the same problem (plus others). This applies to every browser I have tried (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, SeaMonkey, Camino, Opera).
I sometimes find opening, closing, re-opening an email prods the slideshow into action.
Problems include: email thumbs don't show pics (slideshow thumbs usually do), pictures will not load in slideshow, if they do only first eight or so load (sometimes cured by scrolling through thumbs in email).
Also slideshow crops many pictures, but is OK full screen.
This is on Macs running 10.6.8 and 10.4.11 with latest versions of Firefox/TenFourFox.
Googling shows other people have this problem.

  • Email attachments showing up only as code

Hi guys, wondering if you can help. I receive excel files and videos via email and on my ipad they are seen correctly. However, on my imac mail they show up as nothing but text (code).  Can anyone throw some light on this, and hopefully a solution please. Thanks in advance.

Ask the sender to resend the attachments as zip archives. They're not being encoded properly.

  • Mail attachments not saving to the folder I choose

My mail attachments are not saving to the folder I choose.  When I select a file to save in the mail drop-down box, I am given options to save to a folder of my choice.  However, when I select save the document is actually saved deep in some Mail Downloads area, not in my chosen folder.  Has anyone had a similar problem and found a solution?

What kind of files are you trying to attach?
Is it all recipients having this problem or specific one(s)?
Could you possibly post a screenshot of the sent message from your side and a screenshot of what the recipient sees?
What happens if you send one of these messages to yourself?

And after saving * symbol is get removed from the name of document. How and where indesign@ handles this?

Are you just asking because you want to know, or do you have a problem you need to solve? I don't know how to write a program, but I think what your are describing is not an unusual thing for a  program to do. The * tells you that changes have been made since the last save, and the program reserves a portion of memory for undo functions. I suppose a coder could tell you how it works, but I don't think it would help an average user to know, but that's just my opinion.

  • Mail stopped displaying attachments, shows generic full-screen icon

I have been an iPhone user since 2008, and until recently, never had a problem with mail attachments. I know how they work: I need to tap to download them first, sometimes I even need to download the entire message, etc. I have successfully viewed thousands of attachments over the years.
However, a few months ago it just stopped working. JPG, Word, Excel, PDF, etc., attachment are shown at the end of the message with their appropriate icons, and I can tap on them, as before. Tapping will get me to the attachment view screen, as before. However, what's different is that the "attachment view screen" is just a light grey gradient with a generic document icon, a file name, and a description of the file type (see below).
This can happen in all of my mail accounts, so it shouldn't be a server setting. But there are differences:
On Gmail, images usually display correctly, but not Office files
    On Exchange, nothing displays correctly
When I forward the mail to myself in order to fix the issue, the following may happen:
Forwarding an affected message from my iPhone will just kill the attachment. It will be replaced by a content-free HTML file
Forwarding the affected message from my at work PC to my Gmail account will solve the problem, I will be able to open the message on my iPhone, even if it's a Microsoft Office file
Forwarding an affected message from my PC to my Exchange account doesn't solve the problem.
This looks like a bug. Any idea why it suddenly appeared recently? Anyone with a similar experience? Any solutions?
    Thanks a lot, everyone!

    SOLVED!
The culprit was "Spaces" -- I had my work apps in one Space and my others in a second Space.
When Spaces got in the way, I disabled it. That's when the windows disappeared!
Note to Apple: When "Spaces" is disables, allow all windows to open in the "null" window!
