Mail autocomplete still brings up deleted "previous recipient" list addresses

Even after I delete old and incorrect emails from the "previous recipient" list, those incorrect emails still autocomplete when I compose a new Mail Message.  How do I get rid of those addresses?

Try:
Delete an Email Address from Auto-Complete in Mac OS X Mail
To remove an email address from the auto-complete list in Mac OS X Mail:
Start typing the recipient's address or name in a new message.
Select the desired address from the auto-complete list as if you'd compose an email to them.
Click the small down arrow in the recipient.
Select Remove from Previous Recipients List from the menu.

  • Cannot delete previous recipient from mail

I can select the previous recipients that I wish to delete, I then select "remove from list", the email address clears from the list, but if I exit from Mail, the reopen Mail, then examine the previous recipient list the deleted address is there again. Any thoughts?
PS I have also tried deleting the address when I create a new message and then select the address I wish to delete, click on the down arrow at the end of the address and select remove.

I had already looked at that, but unfortunately it was not the answer. Although on that same note in the Previous Recipients list some of the entries have a shaded out symbol beside them (left column) that looks like an address card. I was wondering if there is a plist file that I should try to delete, (I am not sure as to were I should look for it though)

  • My previous recipient list appears to be corrupt. When I attempt to access a particular entry to list or delete it hangs. Is there a way to just clear the history?

My previous recipient list appears to be corrupt. When I scrool through the list it hangs on one partially completed entry. I assume the system crashed some time back and left this entry. It is a little inconvienent at times since some addresses won't auto complete. Any suggestions on deleting entries or clearing the whole list since using the normal procedure to delete an entry just hangs.  Thanks

What happens if you select all then click "Remove from List"?

  • How can I import a previous recipient list from Snow Leopard?

I just upgraded computers and did a clean install without Migration Assistant. How can I import the previous recipient list in Mail? As a way of having a backup, I deleted my address book on the old computed, added all the previous recipients to the Address Book, and exported the address book as an Address Book Archive and also a VCF file.
    Thanks.

    PAHU,
To answer your question, the new AIO is also a Canon, an MG8120 - I could be wrong, but I got the impression the printer removal might have been part of the Lion upgrade code.  i.e. "I see you have a new printer, do you  want to keep the old printer that I can't find?"
I see the IJScanner and Devices folders.  Given that both AIOs are/were Canons, any suggestions on how to remove just the MP970 components without affecting the MG8120 ones?  (The ones in the TWAIN Data Sources were clearly labeled, so it was easy to tell what belonged to what.)
    Thanks in advance.
Sorry for the delay in responding.  I must have my notifications messed up.  Never got an e-mail indicating there had been a reply to my question.

  • Previous Recipient List in Mail not saving Addresses

I've got a MacBook Pro here with plenty of hard drive space and 10.4.10 that is not saving previous recipients in the previous recipients list of mail.
At first, it was just not holding addresses more than 3 or 4 days old, now it's not keeping anything more than a day at best.
Any thoughts? Should I just delete the previous recipients preferences file in Home/Library/Address Book, or is there more?

    Welcome to the discussions, Ethan.
There is no separate Previous Recipients file - they are stored in the AddressBook.data file, along with your Address Book contacts.
What happens when you email someone and then look at the Previous Recipients window in Mail? Is the address you have just used there? If you watch the window, do older PR entries just disappear? Does it affect entries that are in your Address Book? Is your Address Book also affected?

  • How do I delete previously used email addresses?

I used an email once and now I can't get rid of it...  When I am composing a message and type the beginning of an address it comes up and it is not in my contacts.  How do I clear the email cache? Have not been able to find a way to get rid of it.

Apple’s Mail program stashes away a list of previously used addresses to help speed up your e-mail chores, but it saves these addresses whether they are correct or not. Fortunately, it’s possible to open up the list and weed out all the unwanted, outdated or incorrect addresses at one sitting.
To do so, open the Mail program, go to the Window menu and choose Previous Recipients. The Previous Recipients window opens with a sortable list of the names and e-mail addresses of people you have corresponded with in the past, as well as the date of when the address was last used. Click the Name, E-mail or Last Used bar at the top of the column to sort the list on your preferred criteria.
To remove someone from the Previous Recipients list so that Mail won’t try to auto-complete the address, click on the entry to select it and then click the Remove From List button in the bottom left corner of the window. You can select multiple entries at once by holding down the Mac’s Command key to highlight several addresses as you go. Click the Remove From List button to zap all the selected addresses at once.
If you find a contact that you’d like to officially add to the Mac’s Address Book program, select it and click the Add to Address Book button in the bottom right corner of the window.

  • Mail will no longer recognize a previously recognized email address

Hi, I use Mail for my corporate email. It has been flawless up until I took the OSX update on Saturday. I did not lose my Inbox, but I lost the email address recognition when I create a new email.
When I type a "known" address into the "To" box, Mail will not recognize any of it's previously known addresses.
On top of that I have noticed an issue w/Calendar. I was not allowed to edit any of my Meetings on the calendar. It would not recognize me as the initiator or host.
Please help!!! I rely so much on these tools, I am lost w/o them.
    Thanks,

  • Mac OS 10.6.8.  In address book I have tried to delete some groups (created when I created an account in mail which I then subsequently deleted).  However in address book edit the delete button is greyed out.

I cannot delete groups in address book because the delete button is greyed out.  I have deleted the original mail accounts which created the address book.  I could just leave the groups there but the problem it creates is that address book tries to connect to the relevant server every time I open mail, then I get various error messages because it cannot connect.  Thanks for any assistance.

I found this link for a similar problem someone had with a Lotus Notes account. I used it to resolve my issue with a different email account (basically followed the same steps, and then looked for the particular account I needed to delete)... hope it helps!

  • Cannot Send Mail, the server rejected one of the recipient's addresses.

I receive mail just fine. Can't send anything

Interesting to read all your posts, as I too have had this issue with my BRAND NEW Wi Fi 3G 64 GB ipad. Everything worked perfectly well with wireless at home, then we left for a trip interstate. First night I tried to send three emails and received the message that the server had rejected one of the recipients and the messages had been placed into the out box. Most annoying, as the out box is not accessible. I phoned apple and, after much discussion, it was suggested I call my ISP (BigPond). Another lengthy discussion and it was noted that there were no messages in my out box on the server, therefore the issue was with the ipad. I downloaded gmail and was able to receive and send emails using that program. Was also able to access my emails via Big Pond's web mail. It was just the mail program on the ipad that continuously looped back to the same error message. I deleted the account and decided to ask for a refund on the ipad. Back home, I have reinstalled mail to my Big Pond account and all seems to be working well. Am not sure what to do next, as I will be very disappointed if this keeps happening. The ipad is an expensive investment and I want to be able to use it to its fullest extent. Otherwise, I love apple products and am a apple user of more than two decades.
    Good luck all.

  • Cannot bring up a Yahoo email list address on ipad2??? Won't auto fill.

Using yahoo email on my ipad2 it will auto fill an email address if I put in a first name.  It should auto fill 76 addresses when I put in the nickname of one of my lists but it won't.  Will do so on my PC.  Why?  How fix?

If you are talking about Yahoo mail within the built in iOS mail app, you cannot email to groups using the mail app. There are third party apps that will allow you to email to groups, but the iOS mail app won't do it.
There are some workarounds where you can create a group in the notes app, copy it into your contacts app and use that, but the feature just does not exist in the mail app itself.

  • Deleting Previous Recipients from List

I cannot delete unwanted addresses from my Previous Recipient List. None of the addresses show a "Last Used" date past 2008. Anyone have this problem or know how to fix it?

Make sure there are no addresses in the Previous Recipients that you need, then quit Address Book and Mail and delete ~/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr

  • Previous Recipient Address Book integration problem

does anyone know how to add a "Previous Recipient" beyond simply seleccting the contact and checking the box to add?
for instance, how and when does this sync take place? i have closed out of each of these softwares after adding a contact and i am not seeing the sync take place.
also if i have a contact in Mail's Previous Recipients (which has an email address) and I have the same contact in my Address Book (which has a phone number) is there a good way to get these two to MERGE instead of creating two contacts?
    TIA

    > You will see the Previous Recipients list and AB list in Mail will change to First-Last name view.
You are referring here to getting the SORT ORDER to change? I mean, you are indicating that if I change preferences for sort order - well - it did not appear to change anything in an /existing/ linked contact from Mail but you are saying that i need to close and restart AB to get the new sort to take effect before relinking more contacts from Mail...?
Not sort order, view order of First Name before Last. In order for the Previous Recipients list to change in Mail, you need to quit Mail (not AB) and reopen it. It will then change the list view to First-Last name view. Sort order remains sorted by Last name. If you want the sort order by first name, you can do that too.
    > In a message window, most email addresses show first name & then last name. If you are viewing last name first, then it gets put backward in AB and won't match an existing contact. I have tried it an got the name added to show the correct order in AB.
OK, but i am doing something wrong here then because all my combinations cause imported Mail contacts to show up as Last Name - First Name when i have sorted by First Name - Last Name and vice versa if I changed settings in AB preferences...
Change the view order to First-Last name in AB (not sort order). If you are importing contacts from a different source, then I guess that would depend on how it's information is saved. If you are importing from mail messages ((note that I'm referring to how incoming messages are recieved), then the view order (First-Last) is what usually gets sent from people when a name is tagged to it. When adding an address from a mail message, Mail recognizes the name in the header field as First-Last and that's how they get saved to AB. If your view in AB is Last-First displayed, then it gets put in backwards.
As I said, set the viewing order in AB to First Name before last name. Quit Mail and reopen Mail. Your previous recipient list in Mail should change to show First-Last name. Sort order will depend on setting in AB.
    > Names must be the same for it to recognize as a duplicate.
OK, presumably this also includes capitalizations? Anyway, i am doing something wrong because i don't get the first and last order sorted correctly under anything i am doing.
I'm not sure about capatilization, but "Tom Test" does not equal "Thomas Test", or "Tom Test" does not equal "Test Tom".
    > If the name already exists in AB, the drop down list in a messages address window will change to "add to contact" (where it will just add that address to the contact).
OK, so you are referring here to an option to add a contact (i guess we are only adding the email in this case if the contact is already in AB...?) when doing an entry in a Mail Message - which is different from ADDING CONTACT from the Previous Recipients list?
Yes. If the contact exists and let's say you recieve a message from them using a different email address, you will have the option in the dropdown to add the address to the existing contact instead of creating a new one.
The previous recipients list is a database file and I don't believe you can directly import from it. It isn't stored as VCards like the AB data is.
Only thing I can suggest is to play with it and see if you can get it to work for you. Getting it to import the name order to match correctly in AB would be a big step to resolving duplicates. Even if the names don't match exactly and they don't get merged, it would be much easier to spot in a list where the names are close together. If the Last name and First get reversed on the import, then the names will not show close in the list and will be hard to spot.
I think this is a problem trying to get addresses from different sources no matter which application you use.
I wish Mail has a setting to display names differently than AB. I like AB sorted and viewed by Last Name. But I would like my messages displayed in Mail headers as first name when sending or recieving. You don't have any control on addresses that aren't in the AB on how the name tags come in. But as I said, addresses not in AB will generally be displayed First-Last name (providing they have names tagged to it).
I haven't played with this much and things sometimes change with OS upgrades. I usually add a contact manually. If I add from a message, I usually imediately go to AB and fix the names then to make sure it's correct.
Play with it and I just hope it works out for you. Never said it would be easy or flawless.

  • Way to merge previous recipients lists?

    Hi guys-
Did a search on this with no luck. I recently bought a new desktop and 'migration assisted' all my data over from my laptop, but several things did not transfer, including my previous recipient list for mail. After a search I figured out where this file is, so know how to move it, but would prefer to merge it so that I don't lose any of the new emails from the last few months (I've been too busy to tackle this for about four months).
Is there an easy way to do this? Can I simply TextEdit the files together? Suggestions would be awesome, thanks!
    With gratitude,
    Matthew

    hi barney.
thank you. i have been trying to figure out how to manage this but also to /maintain/ it.
from what i am gathering (i also found this method for manually transferring the database) the way to do this is to:
    1. /manually/ add all Previous Recipient emails to my Address Book into a /new/ " previous recipients category.
    2. wipe out all previous recipients in both the macpro and the macbookpro databases.
    3. periodically check Previous Recipients on both computers, manually add to AB and then wipe out.
AB syncing with iCloud will get them to my iPhone at that point and apparently Mail looks to AB /first/ to get an autocomplete anyway.
if anyone has additional info to add to this i would love to hear it...

  • Get back previous contact list

I synced my phone on Friday with my computer and by accident I had it bring back my previous contact list. How do I re-sync to get back the most recent contact list that I have added to?

It is simply multiple entries, as you have no doubt read about, for example if you entered all your wifes numbers just to your wifes name, but as individual details they would work. So say the contact is Wife, select option edit, add detail, then you can have Mobile , home  and work numbers all attached to that one contact, and caller id will work, as long as you don't have several of her work colleagues as contacts with the same works number, the failure of caller id is always due to a conflict, as the phone can only identify the number (the incoming info) and if that is attached to more than one person it just gives out the number.
To resolve the problem you need to find and remove the conflicts !
    Good Luck

  • Stubborn previous recipient won't delete

I'm trying to remove a previous recipient's email address and it won't cooperate. Although I've deleted it from the Window/previous recipients list, it still shows up and autocompletes itself. I also tried deleting the Users/my name/Library/Application Support/AddressBook/MailRecents-v4.abcdmr file and logging out & back in; didn't help. Thanks-

the only other place it could be is your address book. open address book and search for this email.
