Mail banner gone

Suddenly I can no longer see the banner across the top for File, Edit, Menu through the Search icon when Mail is open.  Also, when an email is open, the only options I have are Done and Cancel. No little red and green dots for saving and diminishing, etc. Very frustrating. I have re-started, doesn't fix problem. Can anybody help?

It sounds like you might be in Full Screen Mode.  If so, control-command-f to toggle that on-off.  Or you should be able to put your cursor at the very top of the screen and reveal menus and the full screen mode double arrows in the upper right corner.

  • HT4859 After the i-cloud server issue Nov 26, 2012, I had to change some mail account settings to get my i-cloud mail to work again.  However, all of my received e-mails are gone.  How do I retrieve my e-mails from the server?

After the i-cloud server issue yesterday, November 26, 2012, my i-cloud mail account on my Macbook Pro stopped receiving mail.  I changed some mail account settings to fix the issue, and was able to start receiving e-mails.  However, all of my historical e-mails are gone.  How do I retrieve all of my old e-mails from the server?

What settings did you change, what were the changes, have you visited www.icloud.com to see what mail is actually there? and do you have a backup?

  • Help.I uninstalled ios8 using the directions on the web site and now all my apps, mail are gone.I backed up to iTunes first but when I try to sync to get everything back,it starts and then says it has failed. What do I do now.Thanks.Jane

Help.I uninstalled ios8 using the directions on the web site and now all my apps, mail are gone.I backed up to iTunes first but when I try to sync to get everything back,it starts and then says it has failed. What do I do now.Thanks.Jane

The first time an iPhone is connected to iTunes that is used to sync with another iPhone or iOS device, you are prompted to transfer the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device or to set up the iPhone as a new iPhone.
The former does as provided - it transfers the backup for the other iPhone or iOS device to the iPhone replacing all data on the iPhone that is included with the backup being transferred. The latter does nothing allowing you to make your various selections for the iPhone sync preferences with iTunes.
This is designed to be done right away with a new iPhone.
If you don't have a backup for the iPhone with iTunes on your computer and don't have an iCloud backup that hasn't been updated since choosing to transfer the backup for your iPod Touch to the iPhone, the data that was on the iPhone is gone.

  • Missing address book icon in e-mail banner

    New to Apple.
Have a mac mini with Lion and need some help.  When I created my e-mail account, the address book button does not appear in the e-mail banner at the top with the others (IE attachments and picture buttons).  I have to manually enter the e-mail address from memory.  It will autopopulate the information once I begin typing, but I know there's a way to have the button you can just "click" and then select recipients from my address book.
    Help!

Hi, not exactly clear to me what you're looking for, but try this...
In Mails top gray bar, Right click or Control+click, choose Customize Toolbar, drag Address Book up to where you want it on the Toolbar.

If it is not a drive problem, maybe it is a runaway application. This article shows how to use Activity Monitor to check for that:

  • I upgraded to mountain lion and now all of my notes in Mail are gone!

I have notes turned on in i CLoud system preferences but after the update of the database when I started Mail for the first time, all of my notes in Mail were gone!  Also, all of my folders/mailboxes are gone too.  Can I get them back?

    Open the 'Notes' app.
Notes are in there now, not in Mail.

  • Upgraded Hard Drive, now all "on my mac" mail is gone

Yesterday I installed a new hard drive in my macbook. Used my Time Machine backup to restore the new drive. Everything seems to work fine.
When searching for some email today, though, I noticed that all of the (many) emails in the "on my mac" section of Mail is gone.
I think the messages are still in my home/library/mail/mailboxes, but how do I get Mail to recognize them?

Hello and welcome to the Discussions.
This is probably an index problem. Let's force an overall reindexing via the removal of the Envelope Index since you say it is spread across all On My Mac mailboxes. Note the special instructions when forcing the reindexing of IMAP or Exchange accounts in the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
This will force the reindexing of all the POP mailboxes and all On My Mac mailboxes. With regard to any IMAP accounts if you have any, the practical result of this action of removing the account folder, is that with the IMAP account still set up in the Preferences, Mail will connect to the IMAP server and create a new account folder, and while doing so will index the messages in the mailbox folders of the IMAP account on the server.
    Keep me posted.

Hello, my mail is gone and I can't find it anywhere. Its not in library and I have not configured Time Machine yet. Help please?!

Use Find Any File, if the old messages might have been in a specific mailbox, to look for a file by the name of the mailbox to see if there are any larger versions of that mailbox.

If your Mail is indeed gone, you may be able to recover it with one of the data recovery tools here:
    https://discussions.apple.com/docs/DOC-1689
But act quickly.  Every action while the computer is turned on weakens its chances of recovery.  There is a slim chance also your email provider may have tape backup from before you checked your messages and after it arrived at their server for certain messages.  You may want to ask them if that might have happened.

Mail has gone crazy. Header's and messages are mixed up. New Mac Book Pro. Migrated files from Time machine running snow leopard. Reinstall or new computer needed?

Ok; I'm not sure what you're doing.    36 hours is rather long.  Seems like a new migration.  Not what I intended.
Here's what I intended: from the newly-migrated and apparently-corrupt environment, create a new user, not related to any existing user, nor any migration-created user, or any other user for that matter.  That is, use  > System Preferences > Users and Groups, authenticate yourself by clicking on the padlock, and then click the + and create a wholly new user.  Then log in under that user and establish the mail access.
36 hours?  I'm wondering if there's an error or an exceedingly slow network here?  Or a really, really slow disk?  Or a sick backup?  (WiFi isn't the path I'd usually choose, either.)
Failing the attempted second migration, I'd try a different tactic.  Does your existing (old) system work?   If so, I'd bypass the backup and connect an external (scratch) USB disk drive to the (old) sstem and then boot and use Disk Utility booted from the installer DVD disk or boot and use Disk Utility from the recovery partition or booted from a recovery partition created on some other external storage (details here vary by the OS X version and what hardware you have), and perform a full-disk backup of your original internal disk to (scratch) external storage.  (Make sure you get the source and target disks chosen correctly here; copying the wrong way — from the scratch disk to your existing disk — will clobber your data!)  In esssence, this will clone your existing boot disk.  Then dismount the (formerly-scratch) external disk, transfer it over to the new system, and use it as the source of the migration, by performing a fresh OS X installation on the new system.
Target Disk Mode is also sometimes an option for accessing the disk for a migration, but that requires the right cable, and requires systems that have the same external connection; newer MacBook Pro systems use Thunderbolt for this, and older systems tend to use FireWire.  And I'm guessing you don't have compatible hardware.
The details here can and do vary by your OS X versions and your particular Mac systems — if you'll identify the specific models and hardware, somebody might be able to better tailor the above (fairly generic) sequence to your particular configuration.

  • Messages in Mail all Gone and Have to Re-set-up!

When I tried to access my mail, it asks for me to set-up an account, like when I first bought the computer. When I set up my account from scratch, all my mail is gone from all accounts. My service provider said that it looks like a virus and I should contact Apple. But it costs $49.99. Have any of you had this problem? If so, what fixed it? Help, please! All my e-mails are all gone and even the accounts!

Since Mac OS X 10.4.x is Tiger, and the last version 10.4.11, other parts to
see about getting from a faster source than never on dialup are as follows...

If you have a much earlier Quicktime than 7.5, you may have
to look back in the Support downloads and copy the link address
from the hot link in their web page and save it; later when you
get to a decent enough internet access point, you can get it.
    {You control-click to get the contextual menu to copy the link.}

{All of this, and hopefully maintenance and updates
may help your system. To actually find the missing
emails and see if they are still in the computer now
would entail some work. Perhaps a user account
error has occurred, or the file is lost due to some
other issue or corruption. I don't use ISP email and
    solely rely on web mail, ie: google mail, etc.}
    In any event...
    Good luck & happy computing!

I am using OSX Yosemite 10.10.2 and today when i switched on my Mac all my smtp severs in Apple Mail are gone. I can still receive emails but i cannot send. Any help would be appreciated. • Weird message at log in and now my mail is gone

Hello Apple Family, Last night I bought The Hobbit Extended Edition which had this digital download stuff through Vudu and Ultraviolet. I registered to get my digital download and had to install their software which never did work (and I contacted them).
But this morning I go to log in and my computer is frozen. I manually shut it down and log back in and I get this weird message from Mail about some mailbox needing a name (sorry i didn't screen captre it or write it down :-/. I clicked ok and opned my mail and all my mail was gone except my mail .mac account. Also, all of the archived mailboxes I had aren't showing up. My last time machine backup was Oct. 31st and I can do a restore from that but I'm copying files to my backup disk first which is taking forever.
I wondered if there was another way to restore besides time machine (it looks like mail was the only thing upset that I can tell). I went into my mail settings and started adding my other mail acocunts back in but the archived mail folders I made with literally thousands of emails is still not showing. Any advice is greatly appreciated! Blessings, Jen

  • Incoming Mail Noise gone...? why!

Hey guys, ever since I changed my gmail to IMAP in my apple MAIL the noise it makes when I get an e-mail has gone away. Under preferences the box next to make noises for mail or whatever is checked...anyone know what I can do about this?

well..theres HardwareGrowler too, which gives you notifications of things like plugging in devices, switching power sources, etc. You can run that through Dock Dodger to make it stop showing up in your Dock and set it as a Login Item and itll always be running (very handy)
and those are only the included apps. many apps also have built-in growl support. Adium, Skype, Max (audio converter), CyberDuck, Firefox, Chax (iChat plugin), Yahoo Messenger, Several Twitter clients, like Twitterrific and Pwitter, heck, there's even an Automator action that lets you make Automator display a Growl notification with custom text. There's Transmission (bittorent client), Stuffit Expander, Handbrake (video converter) and tons more (these are just some of the apps i have installed). Each app comes with built-in support for Growl, so you don't need to install anything extra. Just start the app and it will install it's Growl support automatically. if you want to change that programs Growl settings, just go to the Growl Prefpane in System Preferences and click "Applications". A list of your current Growl apps will be there. If you have a growl-enabled app on your computer, you need to start it at least once after installing growl before it shows up in the list..
    have fun!
(woah, slightly off topic here..but anyway)
