Mail bounce

Used to be able to bounce mail.  Has that feature been disabled in Mac Mail.  I am running v 5.1.

Look at the discussions listed to the right, in "More like this", for all kinds of talk on this subject.

  • Mail Bouncing everything...

I am recently finding that ALL of my messages that I receive are bouncing back to the sender. I have turned off all rules and can not find any obvious reasons as to what would cause this.
Also, when I send a note to myself from my iPhone (from the note app), it sends it again and again, last time was like 120 times!!!
Any thoughts on where to start?

What tipped you off that your messages are bouncing? Who is your email service provider? Is Mac Mail bouncing them, or are the senders receiving bounces messages? If the latter, the bounced messages will give you the reason.
-getting e-mail failure notices was the first sign... ie: when my system or .mac bounced then I got a returned e-mail from whatever company my system replied to automatically. So if I got a message from Tiger Direct for instance about some deal going on, right after it was a message saying that I had sent an e-mail to an incorrect address (from Tiger Direct), or I would get a failed sent message from a server.
-this issue is on my .mac address, although it has also happened with gmail. To me that says it is Mail based. Although I know gmail will CC the sender, so maybe that was unrelated... not sure.
-who or what is bouncing them is unclear. It seems that some where there is bounce... though it is actually a reply, as I still get the message.

  • Mac Mail "bounce" feature does NOT work

Noticed that the "bounce" mail feature of Mac mail will not work. Did a search and found that it isn't working anymore for anyone. Also found several posts here on Apple Discussions, that "bounce mail" is not working, and all of the questions asking why it isn't working, are archived and no answers are allowed. The bounce mail feature was a great tool to reject and send back an email from someone that you didn't want email from. That unwanted sender would get the message that it was an invalid email address, and problem solved. We should absolutely have the right to reject an email from an unwanted sender by blocking reception from their email address. It is not acceptable that we should have to receive emails from a specific sender we are trying to block. Spam coming from faked addresses is bad enough, but when you know a specific unwanted sender's address, we need to be able to bounce and reject their emails! Fixing the Mac Mail bounce feature should be a high priority.

The whole point is to STOP their behavior, not accept it. Your suggestion, that I have to allow the unwanted email to come in, for me to have to deal with it, trashing it or otherwise, sounds like the attitude of the spammers.
Let's not confuse the point here, Apple put the "bounce mail" feature in Mac mail for a reason, and I just want it to work again.
Bouncing email is not unique to Apple's Mail. There is a RFC specifying how bouncing should be handled. Thomas already explained why bouncing email is not a good idea. Here is the reason quoted from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nondeliveryreport.
"Today, however, most email is spam, which usually utilizes forged Return-Paths. It is then often impossible for the MTA to inform the originator, and sending a bounce to the forged Return-Path would hit an innocent third party. In addition, there are specific reasons why it is preferable to silently drop a message rather than reject it (let alone bounce it):
    * Heuristically filtered spam. Spam filters are not perfect. Rejecting spam based on content filtering implies giving to spammers a test environment where they can try several alternatives until they find a content that passes the filter.
    * Viruses and worms. Most times these are sent automatically from an infected machine. Since a bounce may contain a copy of the worm itself, it may contribute to its diffusion."
So using bounce is not a good idea, IMHO.

  • After adding SPF records for Hybrid Development some external mails bounced back with error SPF Unauthorized mail is prohibited.

Added v=spf1 include:spf.protection.outlook.com -all and the txt token for the Exchange 2013 hybrid configuration, now some mails bounced back with the error "SPF Unauthorized mail is prohibited". What could be the cause? Should I customized
the SPF record but it is not mentioned in the procedures for Hybrid configuration to do that.

  • Mail bounces once then won't open

I guess that kinda sums it up. Mail, when you click on it in the dock, bounces once, then just sits there staring at me, and fails to open. I've run a Disk repair thing just in case it was accessibility, but that hasn't helped.
I looked at it in Terminal and got this:
dyld: /Applications/Mail.app/Contents/MacOS/Mail malformed library: /System/Library/PrivateFrameworks/HTMLDisplay.framework/Versions/A/HTMLDisplay (not a Mach-O file, bad magic number)
    Trace/BPT trap
I haven't a clue what this means! I don't suppose anyone knows how I can restore access to Mail?
    Thanks in advance!

It means that there is something wrong with your Mac OS X installation.
What does “I've run a Disk repair thing” mean? Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using (which you haven’t provided and doesn’t appear in your profile either), unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
You may also have to reinstall the following Security Update, which includes most of the security updates released after Mac OS X 10.3.9:
Security Update 2007-007 for Mac OS X 10.3.9
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mail bounces a few times but won't open, other apps work.

OK, I searched the forums and can't find an answer related to this for mail (found it for itunes, safari, etc). I am sure this is a mundane thing but to my computer simple mind, I am stuck.
My husband ran a Safari update. Since then the mail icon bounces but will not open. All other apps work. I trashed (and emptied) all the Safari stuff. I ran disk utlities repair. I inserted the startup disk, holding key "c" and did a hard drive repair and I got nothing.
How do I get my mail back on track??? Anyone???
    Thanks in advance.

You have doe the Disk "Repair", which is the first (and harder) part. The second part is the "Repair Permissions". It is much easier because it can be done "live" in the running system.
Quit all other Applications and run Disk Utility.
Select your Hard drive and check the SMART Drive status in the bottom margin for "Verified"
    Click on ( Repair permisions)
wait while lots of wacky message scroll by. These can safely be ignored unless they appear in RED.
    Quit Disk Utility
    try to start Mail again.

  • Outgoing mail bouncing

    Error
This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered.
The connection to the server "smtp.mac.com" on port 25 timed out.
The above message is what I'm greeted with everytime I try to send an email. Incoming email hasn't been a problem (especially with the recent surge in spam on my mac account), but I haven't been able to send a message from my mac account since I moved a week ago. Otherwise my new connection is working perfectly.
I've checked all the preferences in Mail and I'm all out of ideas, please help!
    imac G4 / ibook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

This isn't the definition of a bounced message since the message has not been sent.
Sounds like you also changed your internet service provider (ISP) when moving. If so, most if not all ISPs used for connecting to the internet block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network (or not provided by the ISP) on Port 25.
Some ISPs allow the use of an authenticated SMTP server only (such as the .Mac SMTP server) on Port 25 but some block its use regardless.
These restrictions are in place as part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain.
    Something to try.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your .Mac account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below for the .Mac SMTP server.
Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.
If this does not work and you are also accessing an email account and SMTP server that is provided by your ISP used for connecting to the internet, select/use your ISP's SMTP server to send messages with your .Mac account which is invisible to all recipients.

    Hi mohsin,
Check in SMICM that the ICM is actually up and running. Some times it doesnt start automatically. Then check if you have configured the SMTP service in SMICM -> Goto -> Services and there should be an entry for SMTP.
If not you will need to create one in SMICM (455140 gives the RZ10 instance parameters).
    Hope this helps

I don't have .mac, nor would I, but several people have had problems recently, actually on and off for years, so it may pass, sometimes it's just a regeon or two having problems.
Also, are youaware they are switcing over to .me and cancelling .mac? That eems to be causing some problems now and then also.

  • Snow Leopard Mail - Bouncing Icon/Play Sound Rules Cancel Each Other Out

I recently saw a movie which featured many closeups of a MacBook Pro being used; every time the actor got an e-mail message, the Mail icon bounced in the Dock AND played the New Message Sound. In the current version of Snow Leopard Mail, you can create a Rule to 'Bounce Icon in Dock' when a new message is received. Unfortunately, this disables the New Message Sound. When the user adds another Rule to 'Play Sound', this rule disables the 'Bounce Icon in Dock' feature. At this point, both Rules display as being active, but only one of them works. Anyone know how to get both the New Message Sound AND the bouncing icon? (The actor was able to do it in the movie, but maybe that was just special effects.)

    Look at that:

You can use both rules together (sound & bouncing)
    I had test it!

  • Snow Leopard Mail - Bouncing Icon Rule Works Strangely

With most applications, when the icon bounces, the bouncing is stopped once the function it was notifying you about has been taken care of. This is not the case with Snow Leopard Mail. When a Rule has been created to 'Bounce Icon in Dock', the icon keeps bouncing, even after the message it was notifying you about has been selected and read. The user must then go back to the icon and click it to stop it from bouncing. It would be much more convenient and intuitive if the icon stopped bouncing after the messages have been read. Does anyone no of a way to configure Mail to do this?

  • EXTERNAL mail bouncing from deleted and recreated account

I do not believe this is the X.500 LegacyExchangeDN issue, as the problem occurs for external users only and the error states it is a DNS issue.  The reply is going to <ADDomain>.local, so that shouldn't resolve properly.  My question is
why the .local address is being used and how to fix that.
Here is the error report from a bounced message:

  • AOL mail bounce back

I am getting bounce backs from any mail sent to an AOL account. The mail will go through if I log onto my mailbox at my ISP provider (Optimum Online). The bounce back has this message:
Reason: SMTP transmission failure has occurred
    Diagnostic code: smtp;554-: (ISP:B2) http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/554ispb2.html TRANSACTION FAILED
    Remote system: dns;mailin-01.mx.aol.com (TCP|167.206.4.199|54475|205.188.156.185|25) (rly-ya06.mx.aol.com ESMTP mailrelayin-ya6.5; Thu, 31 May 2007 10:17:46 -0400)
    If I go to the aol link in the message I get this explanation;
    554 ISP:B2
    http://postmaster.info.aol.com/errors/554ispb2.html
    EXPLANATION:
Your IP address has generated a high volume of mail to AOL which exceeded our rate limit or has generated AOL member complaints. Possible causes include a compromised or virus-infected personal computer or a non-disclosed server relaying mail within the ISP's network. Note, this block is automatically removed within 24 hours.
    SOLUTION:
The IP address in question is not the connecting MTA, but is commonly the originating IP. If your originating IP is static and has valid and meaningful reverse DNS, then please contact us with that IP. If you are not sure what your originating IP address is or if you are unsure as to whether your originating IP is dynamic or static, please contact your ISP for further information regarding your type of service.
If you are sending large volumes of mail from a dynamic IP address, please contact your ISP and inquire about purchasing a static IP or business class IP address. Furthermore you can attempt to reduce the amount of email recipients sent during one session. If you are sending to a mailing list you should verify that the recipients on your list are still interested in receiving your email.
If you did not send an extraordinary amount of email, we recommend scanning your computer or network for viruses and malicious applications.
If you are an ISP receiving this error from an excessive number of your customers you may have an undisclosed proxy or relay on your network. Please contact us to resolve this issue.
I am not sending high volumes of mail to AOL unless one or two emails a day is large. This is a recent problem. Has anyone experienced this or does someone have a solution? My ISP says there is nothing they can do on their end and AOL won't talk to you unless you have a paid account.
    Dan

AOL's explanation per the link provided covers your options.
    * You contacted your ISP which indicated there is nothing they can do or there is nothing they are willing to do in your behalf.
    * You are not sending high volumes of mail to AOL.
    * You can scan your Mac for viruses and malware which can't hurt but will be a waste of time in this situation.
This leaves contacting AOL. Other than that, wait until the 24 hour block period has expired.

  • Mail bounces

Hi there--very much an Apple newbie here, so please be gentle!
My .Mac.com trial period expired and I haven't renewed it. Now people sending mails to my server-based email addy get a bounce message that says the .Mac address has bounced the mail because it is an "illegal alias".
I can't find anything in the OS X mail client which will turn this off. (Wiped and re-installed my O/S, but still it's happening)
    Help!!

    You're welcome.
We need to get some terminology squared away first.
There is no .Mac email client. There is Apple's Mail application which can access a .Mac account and/or any IMAP or POP account.
Since all email is server based - when you say "server-based email addy", does this mean you access this email account via webmail access using a browser only or do you also access this email account with the Mail application?
Just by creating a .Mac trial account or full account cannot cause email addressed to an entirely different email address to be delivered to the incoming mail server for a .Mac account without user intervention. You can have a .Mac account check an external POP account - provided by a different email account provider to have messages sent to the external POP account's email address received by the .Mac incoming mail server and deposited in the .Mac account's Inbox mailbox but this is done via webmail access for the .Mac account preferences which is user intervention.
If you didn't do this, have you checked your server-based email account preferences via webmail access to make sure you aren't forwarding messages for this account to your expired .Mac trial account?

  • Mail: Bouncing icon

    Hi folks -
I know this is going to be the stupid question of the week, but...
The bouncing mail icon is driving me insane. It bounces even when the messages are in the junk folder. I am perfectly content with the icon simply having the number of new messages, I don't need it to bounce.
I've tried disabling animated icons in the Dock preferences and turning off the new mail sound notification. No go.
Any ideas? What am I missing?
    Thanks,
    -Dan

    Dan,
Go to Mail>Preferences...>Rules and "Edit" or "Remove" any rules which exist at that location. I have a "Bounce Icon in Dock" rule which I believe was a default setting because I do not remember creating the rule from scratch.
    ;~)
