Mail bug - Mail insists I have unread messages when I don't

I just purchased a new MacBook Pro and copied all my mailbox contents over from my PowerBook G4 via a Time Capsule backup of my entire user folder.
Last night, after checking for new mail, Mail said I had 40 new messages. But when I got done looking at all of them, Mail still showed (in the ovals next to each account inbox and the red dot on the dock icon) that I had 20 unread messages. It also flagged more than 600 messages in Trash as unread, as well as a few in Junk.
Nothing I do can convince Mail I have read all my messages. I experienced this problem intermittently on my PowerBook, but there, whenever I clicked on the relevant account inbox and Mail checked and saw I had no new messages, the numbers all disappeared.
I get a lot of mail throughout the day, so knowing how many messages I have at any given time is important. How can I make this problem go away, short of deleting all my messages and starting over (not feasible as I constantly refer to and rely on these messages).

My PB just crashed with a kernel panic and when it came back it said something about the mail being corrupted and had to import all my messages. That all seemed to work fine, but I had 12 unread messages in the dock icon I couldn't get rid of. I read through these discussions and found the unread smart mailbox trick and that found some of them, but I still have four unread messages (according to the dock icon) and nothing shows up in my unread smart mailbox. Any other suggestions?
Thanks.

  • Why does my email inbox say I have unread messages, when I know for a fact that I don't?

I know it probably shouldn't bother me, but I can't stand the little red figure notification bubble on my apps. Therefore, I always read all of my emails and update my apps on time to avoid any red bubbles. Yet, what i don't understand is why my mail app is saying I have new mail even when I don't. The first time this has happened was when I upgraded to ios7 and I'm not okay with that. I had hoped that when I bought the new iphone it would go away, but it hasn't. Has anyone else had this problem too?

I phone is said to be example : 16 gb so it shows it as such.  Your computer detects the true storage capacity as being example:  15.1 gb.  Not every device is the same.  They don't all hold 16 gb.  It's just a rough estimate as to how much is in that device.  That could be where he difference lies

  • 5800 flashing I have a message when I don't!

    Hi everyone,
I hope this is the right place to put this!
I recently updated my 5800 xpressMusic.  I honestly thought It was updated but it went from something like Version 20 to 50
Since It has been updated, everytime it is locked the middle bottom white button flashes like it used to when I had a new text message/missed call.  I have deleted my messages, checked my missed calls, checked voice mail, turned the phone off and on, took the battery out (for 30 seconds) and it is still doing it...
Does anyone know how I stop it from flashing when I don't have a message?  But I would like it to flash when I do have a message so I know I have one as there is no other way to notify me when the phone's locked is there?
I know it's such a small thing but i relied on it a lot and it's annoying me now.
    Thanks.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

For messages etc Go to: Menu->settings->phone->notification lights->notification light->events notified etc. You can also set time it will blink.
    Cheers!

  • Why does Mail keep showing that I have incoming messages, when I don't?

...usually hundreds via the "burning cigarette"!

Quit Mail. Force quit if necessary.
Back up all data. That means you know you can restore the Mail database, no matter what happens.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens (command-V), then press return.
A folder window will open. Inside it there should be files with names as follows:
    Envelope Index
    ExternalUpdates.storedata
Move those files to the Desktop, leaving the window open. Other files in the folder may have longer names that begin as above. Move those files, if any, to the Trash.
Log out and log back in. Relaunch Mail. It should prompt you to re-import your messages. You may get a warning that the index is damaged and that Mail has to quit. Click OK. Warning: The process may take hours if you have gigantic mailboxes. For reasonable-sized mailboxes, it should only take a few minutes.
Test. If Mail now works as expected, you can delete the files you moved to the Desktop. Otherwise, post your results.

  • OS X 10.5 Mail shows unread messages when there are none and get ghost messages

I have been searching for an ansswer to this delimma, but have found similar issues but none exactly the same.  I run 10.6 server and have mixed network users of 10.6 and 10.5 clients.  One of the users on 10.5 's mail app keeps showing unread messages, but there are no unread messages.  When they click on another mail box in the mail client or another folder the number changes, but ther always seems to be one or two.  The user also gets at least 2 blank e-mails in the mail app.  I have check the users web mail account and there are no blank e-mail messages or spam.  I tried to rebuild the mail box, and have also tried trashing the indexs, and they still get the same message.  Short of creating a new user does anyone have any suggestions?  None of my other users seem to have the same problem, although they do not use mail as much as this one user does.....

I get this issue every single day, and it is specifically reproducible. Here is the scenario:
    1) I have two mail accounts configured on my iPhone, one is my work account and is disabled on the phone, the other is my gmail account which is always enabled on my phone
    2) Each morning, when I head into work I enabled my work email account so I can start reading my work emails for the day. This downloads all the new messages from the server and displays them as unread.
    3) I read some of them, but not all of them.
    4) Once I get to my office, I read all of the rest of my new work emails from the Mail app on my MacBook Pro.
EXPECTED: The messages that are read on the mail app are updated as read messages
OBSERVED: On my iphone, not all of the messages have their statuses changed to read. Some of them always remain as unread messages
    5) Next, I delete some of the messages read from my computer from the email server altogether.
EXPECTED: These messages would also appear deleted when using the mail app on my iPhone
OBSERVED: Not only are the messages not deleted, but they are still listed as unread
The only way to resolve this each day is for me to select each message and view it for a second to have the unread message indicator removed. I have to turn off the mail account and turn it back on for it to correctly sync with the mail server and correct the mistakes.
There is clearly a problem within the iPhone mail app with retrieving updates from the mail servers.
I have an iPhone 4 running iOS 4.2.1 that I purchased in November. Before that, I had an iPhone 3G S and never experienced the issue on my 3G S. My MacBook Pro was used with both devices.

  • HT3576 how to assigne a unique sound to a single incoming e mail address and have it aleart when in lock screen 4s Iphone 6.13

how to assign a unique sound to a single incoming e mail address and have it alert when in lock screen on 4s Iphone 6.1.3
I receive emergency requests for service thru e mails. my old BB let you assign separate sounds for incoming e mail addresses. can I duplicate that with Iphone or MUST I be woken with each and every incoming e mail?

I have email messages alert sounds turned off except for VIP addresses (of which I have only one). That means I only get alerted for that one address.
To add a Contacts entry to VIP senders in iPhone Mail:
Open your list of mailboxes in iPhone Mail.
Tap the > button next to VIP.
Select Add VIP… at the list's end.
Tap the desired entry from your contacts.
Then, in Notifications>Mail, turn off the souds for your email account but enable them for VIP.
Note that all VIP emails will have the same tone. It's more like the Priority feature on a BB than custom text tones.
    Best of luck.

  • How can I remove unread messages when I know I don't have any?

How can I remove "unread messages" when I know I do not have any?

Hit the num lock button again. Num lock forces only the numeric keypad underlying keys to work as a  numeric keypad, and the rest of the keyboard won't work.  Unfortunately Apple stopped including the numeric keypad hidden keyboard key labels on its keyboards.  They used to include them.  They are known as mouse keys: http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/cdb_moskys.html

The error message is "The specified module could not be found. C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Adobe Version Cue CS4\Client\4.0.1\Version Cue.DLL

I tried what you suggested and it did not help.  whenever I try to open either photoshop or bridge, I get a message saying that there was a problem loading scripts the last time that Bridge was open and do I want to try loading them again?  If I click yes, I get that same error message that I reported in my original question and photoshop/bridge will immediately close.  If I click no, photoshop and bridge will open but it will not let me open a raw format document.  It seems like Adobe Camera Raw is not being recognized.   One of the updates I downloaded was an update to Adobe Camera Raw so the functionality is there, it just can't be accessed.  do you think I should try to uninstall and re-install Photoshop again?

  • Software update says i have applications open when i don't

Software updater tells me I have applications open when I don't.  Now I can't even shut down the installer. HELP!

Didn't  the installer give you an opportunity to quit it when it gave you that message?
    What were you updating?
You should be able to force quit the installer just like any other app but depending on what you were installing when it failed, and depending on where in the installation process it failed, you could leave your system in an inseminate state.  That may mean you mght not be able to reboot.

  • Can't get rid of unread mail icon--shows 2 unread messages but can't find any

I've got a smart mailbox that shows unread messages so I can easily see what new and unread mail I have.  The problem is it gives me the notification icon that indicates I have two unread messages, yet the mailbox does not show any messages as unread...  This isn't a huge problem, but the Mail icon in my dock always shows that I have new mail, and the notification icon is small enough that I can't always clearly see if it's the "usual 2" or a higher number.  What could be causing this and how do I either find the unread messages or get this icon reduced to where it only shows me REAL unread messages?

  • Mail says I have 4294967266 messages in Inbox.

I've just set up Mail for the first time, with a brand new Mac Pro running OS X 10.5.5, and I'm accessing an IMAP account. Mail reports the correct number of messages in every folder except the Inbox. Sometimes it says I have 1 message, or 4 messages, or 8 messages, but usually it says I have around 4 billion messages (the actual number varies, but it's always around 2 to the power of 32).
All these numbers are powers of 2, so I think this must be a mathematical error somewhere. Is this a known bug with the Mail app? Or is it possible the problem is on my IMAP server's end, even though this didn't happen when I used a different mail program?
Everything else seems to be functioning correctly, so it's not a dire situation. It's just reporting the incorrect number of messages.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.
    David

I did exactly what you described, and it seemed to rebuild okay. But it didn't solve the problem.
Does Apple Mail calculate the number of messages on its own, or does it receive that information from the server? Is it possible it's a problem on the server end?
Incidentally, I found someone else who posted a similar problem in the forum (same symptom, but he was using a POP account), but it doesn't look like he ever found a solution: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1760862&tstart=32

  • Mail showing one unread message when all messages are marked as read

Wondering if anyone else was having any weird issues with their iCloud and unread count in the Mail app on their mac running lion? I can't seem to get rid of a phantom unread message. My iCloud account is fairly new so I don't have that many messages to go through so I know there is not an unread message any where. Any help would be appreciated
    Cheers,
    Rabah

I have had the same issue with my Microsoft exchange email after upgrading to Lion.  It's a bit annoying.  My iPad, Android Phone, and viewing it using a browser all show 0 unread, but Mail shows 3 unread.  I have tried deleting the account, rebuilding, and pawing through settings looking for something I missed. Nothing.  I actually had the same problem with my MobileMe email with Snow Leopard but I eventually permanently removed the account as other problems arose and just used it in my browser.
    Sorry I couldn't help but I hope it's resolved.

  • IPad mail shows too many unread messages

    iOS 7.1.2(11D257)
    iPad model MC733LL/A
The mail icon in the iPad dock shows 2,685 unread messages, in spite of the fact that all messages have been deleted from within mail. When you open Mail, the offending In Box shows the same number.  Looking in that mailbox, it says No Mail in the middle of the sidebar, but at the bottom it says "Updated Just Now, 2,685 Unread".
No iCloud or synching is involved.
I have already rebooted, to no avail.
Is there some way to force a re-download of Mail?

Yes, we tried that already, didn't work. We are lugging the whole iMac to the Genius Bar today, blech.
