Mail can't be used & won't rebuild index

Hello,
I've had this problem since before I upgraded to Mavericks..
When I click on a link (to email someone from their site for instance), Mail tries to open.
After some time of waiting it says there is a problem and I need to rebuild the index.
Have tried to do this countless times, however it will not do it.
I now have to wait ages for it to give me the message and click Quit instead.
Is there something I can do to fix this?
I'd rather disable Mail than go through this procedure each time.
I have also looked at various discussions but none seem to match my problem, including trying to find the 'envelope index' or something in Finder but this can't be found.
Hope someone can help!
Many thanks

I tried the system update very soon after I loaded the Leopard OSX 10.5 upgrade on the laptop. That did not work. As far as updating the application, Apple does not have any clear link to a place to do that on its website.
But I did solve the problem with my angry granny approach. I went back into the Library, found Mail, found an old e-mail from the priest at my church, and clicked on it. Apple Mail opened up, configured itself to take in all the old mail and mailboxes, and asked permissions to put my login information in the keychain. Now it is working perfectly well.
I have no idea why this worked unless the Leopard was afraid of an old woman, but everything is fine now.

Thanks for your response and yes I understand what you are saying. Maybe you could explain why "email users" hate HTML email with a passion.
These tend to be technical users who have a more purist attitude about email. They prefer that email be text-only, and consider HTML formatting to be superfluous for most messages. And I do think they have a point. If you have 100 plain-text emails and 100 HTML emails, you will notice that the HTML emails take up noticeably more disk space. And if the HTML email senders have loaded down their default emails with background images, signatures with corporate logos and winmail.dat attachments and all manner of embedded ornamentation, and (I never even thought people went this far) animations, then a simple email reply like "Thanks! I'll see you this evening," ends up carrying an tremendous additional amount of file size and network bandwidth overhead just to carry those six words. It not only means more disk space consumed, but it ripples all through the system: More space is required for backing up and archiving your emails, plus more mail server space and network bandwidth are consumed per message. Purists see this as an incredible waste of resources.
The message body of at text email can simply be "Thanks! I'll see you this evening."
The HTML version, at a bare minimum, must be
    {html}
    {p}"Thanks! I'll see you this evening."{/p}
    {/html}
(replaced angle brackets with curly brackets so Apple Forums won't try and format it)
Already that's almost double the amount of characters required to send the message, just to format it in HTML. And that's if no fonts, styles, graphics, or media have been applied. If they are, the number of actual characters sent balloons dramatically.
I'm in the middle. I don't hate HTML email, I'll even turn it on when I think formatting will help my message. But I like to use disk space efficiently, so I've set plain text as my default for sending messages.

  • E-mail - can I sometimes use WiFi, sometimes not?

Sorry if this question has already been asked 1,000 times before - it's a very obvious question, but I can't find it on the site anywhere.
I generally check my e-mail on my phone when I'm in a WiFi hotspot (using the messaging app, not a web-based one). This usually works fine - it will use whatever WiFi I happen to be connected to.
However, sometimes I'm nowhere near a WiFi hotspot, in which case I'm quite happy to use 3G instead - asdamobiles.co.uk in my case.
The annoyance is, though, that the message app complains it can't find the WiFi. I can get round this by doing the following whenever I'm away from a WiFi hotspot:
    1. Go into messaging
    2. Select Options | Settings
    3. Select e-mail
    4. Select mailboxes
    5. For each mailbox I want to check (and I have a few!):
    5a. Select the mailbox
    5b. Click on Connection settings
    5c. Click on incoming e-mail
5d. Scroll down to Access point in use
5e. Change this from "Default connection" to my asdamobiles.co.uk one
    5f. Repeat steps 5d and 5e for outgoing e-mail
Then it works. Of course, I have to remember to change it back again afterwards, or it will use that instead of my WiFi when I'm back home or in range of a hotspot.
What I'd like it to do is use whatever my current connection happens to be - I might be connected via WLAN, or I might be browsing the web using the asdamobiles.co.uk connection. How do I get my phone to use whatever connection happens to be available without having to go through the long-winded process above?
    Thanks in advance!
    Chris.

Thanks, chanchan! That sounds like a solution - but unfortunately I've just tried that, and it's not working for me. The current setting is "Ask when needed", and when I click on this to change it, "Always ask" is indeed an option. But it's already selected - and as soon as I select it again, it reverts to "Ask when needed". And then it doesn't ask - it just uses the WLAN.
In answer to your first point, sometimes I'm already connected, sometimes I'm not. This aspect of it is flaky, too - most of the time, it finds the relevant WLAN and connects, but sometimes it doesn't. For instance, I'm at home now - and when I just tried to read my e-mail, it told me it couldn't find the WLAN. However, the WLAN icon was visible, when I clicked on it, it showed me my home WLAN, and I was able to connect to it. Then when I went into messaging, it *did* get my e-mail. It's yet another intermittent problem I've had out of quite a lot of problems ever since getting this phone, to be honest.
You're quite right that it should use (prompting you first if that's what you've selected) the 3G if it can't find WiFi - it should, ideally, be able to use any available connection in a priority order. It's annoying little things like this, together with the appallingly designed OVI software interfaces, that makes me think this is a great phone let down by poorly thought out software.

    I would suggest two things:
    1) Do not use 0 for the SRID in the user_sdo_geom_metadata entry. There is no 0 SRID value. Look at the sdo_srid value in your geometries, and if it is NULL, specify NULL. If there is a value, match it in the user_sdo_geom_metadata entry.

  • Upgrade to Lion: Mail is not compatible and won't open.  How do i reinstall an updated version Mail?

So, I'm currently trying to update my parent's computer and in the process of updating their Mail application it has become unusable.  My computer at home (not my parents computer) ran into the same problem before I updated to Lion and deleting the preferences for Mail solved it.  Plus, I have read previous posts about this similar problem and a typical troubleshooting solution was to delete the Mail preferences.
After all of my software updates (Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.8) and deleting the preferences for Mail, I still receive the same error message when trying to open the application.  "Mail can't be used on this version of mac OS X.  Try opening the version of Mail located in the Applications foler on your computer."  My applications folder has not been adjusted, edited or even touched from it's original state in the dock/home folder.
I contacted AppleCare support and they advised me to reformat my computer.  I think that's a little... unneccesary??  It's just Mail that isn't working.  The rest of the applications (e.g. Safari, Address Book, iPhoto, etc.) open just fine.
After a second call to AppleCare, they had advised me differently than before.  Once they found out that my personal computer has Mac OS X Lion installed from the App Store, they suggested I simply upgrade my parents computer to Lion.
So, I used my download from the App Store and upgraded.  It went smoothly, but Mail still will not open properly.  And instead of the original error message, it comes up with this:
"Check with your developer to make sure Mail can work with your version of Mac OS X.  You may need to reinstall the application.  Check if there are any updates available for the application."
How can I re-install just Mail?  A startup disk is not accessible for me right now.  Can I download the latest version of Mail and install it from the Apple.com website?

Do we get money back if it no longer opens?
Certainly not without going through basic troubleshooting steps first. Many times some basic troubleshooting will fix things. If you haven't tried anything yet, you cannot say for sure that the app will not work at all.
There are a number of things in here that you can try.
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1702?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
In a worst case scenario, you can always delete the app and download it again and see if it will work. You will not be charged again as long as you use the same Apple ID that you bought the app with.

I just clicked software updated and after installed items that showed me to install - now mail won't work at all.  I get the following message, "You have Mail version 4.2 (1084/1085).  It can't be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.8 (Build 10K549). • Mail.app version can't be used in 10.6.3.

    Hi all,
I have (as far as I know) the latest version of mail.app and just upgradted OSX to 10.6.3. Got the msg "You have Mail version 4.2 (1077/1078). It can't be used on Mac OS X Version 10.6.3 (Build 10D573). For more information, click the Help button"
    Any thoughts?
    J.

    My update of OS X to 10.6.3 made mail.app (v. 4.2 1078) unusable.
Connections to receive mail timed out repeatedly. This happened on both POP and
    IMAP accounts.
I tried to rebuild mailboxes/indexes, delete preferences, etc. Nothing worked. I set up new
accounts and had the same problem. I tried other email clients (Thunderbird and Seamonkey)
with existing and new accounts and had the same problem.
I set up Seamonkey running on a Vista machine on the same network with the same account
information as on the Mac and it worked fine.
I reinstalled the last OS update (10.6.3) again, no change.
I finally reinstalled the OS from the installation DVD. Now running OS X v. 10.6 and mail.app
    v. 4, and after a slow startup (caching attachments from the IMAP account) everything seems to
    be back to normal.
Besides the various email clients, no other applications seemed to be affected by the 10.6.3 update.

I started to set up my icloud account, and then changed my e-mail address.  Now it won't allow me to access  or change it.  What can I do?

    Welcome to the Apple Community.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your iOS device, you need to delete the account from your iOS device first, then add it back using your updated details. (Settings > iCloud, scroll down and hit "Delete Account")
Providing you are simply updating your existing details and not changing to another account, when you delete your account, all the data that is synced with iCloud will also be deleted from the device (but not from iCloud), but will be synced back to your device when you login again.
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iCloud account on your computer, you need to sign out of the account from your computer first, then sign back in using your updated details. (System Preferences > iCloud, click the sign out button)
In order to change your Apple ID or password for your iTunes account on your iOS device, you need to sign out from your iOS device first, then sign back in using your updated details. (Settings > store, scroll down and tap your ID)

the problem I have since I upgraded to Mavericks version 10.9.1
The problem appears only with Mail not with other programs, not even with my browser.
When I try to zoom the text of an e-mail I received or sent , I can no longer use the keys Command + to enlarge the text, although I can reduce it with Command -.
As I have a problem with my eyes, This is a serious matter for me.
When I write an e-mail, if I select text and press Command +, it just displaces the text to the right.
Now, my husband has a USB keyboard. If he connects it to my computer, his regular Command + does not work either, but  he uses the extended keyboard, then it works. Unfortunately, he needs it for a musical application which does not work with a wireless keyboard.

Firefox 3.6.4 and 3.6.6 use a process called, "plugin-container.exe" which was using up most of my CPU when I opened up multiple tabs that contained Adobe Flash files, and caused Firefox to lock up.
My solution was to use Firefox 3.5.10 which you can get from the Mozilla website at [http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/all-older.html]
I am using Adobe Flash 10.1.53.64 without any problem in this version of Firefox. Check the release notes, I believe it contains all the latest security fixes in "Firefox 3.6.4".
Hopefully, they will fix Firefox 3.6 in the next version (e.g. Firefox 3.6.7), until then you should probably use "Firefox 3.5.10".

Since iOS 8.1.1 I can no longer use my mail app on my iPad Mini. The mail app opens and updates, however the screen does not respond to anything. Am rather stuck as to what to do. This is the Mail App that comes with the iPad Mini.
I have tried to turn the iPad On/Off all to no avail. I don't really want to reset my iPad as this will cause more trouble than it is worth and will ultimately update the iPad to iOS 8.1.1 anyway. Do any of you have any suggestions that don't involve resetting the iPad ?
    Thanks All

Before you delete your mail accounts, try giving your iPad a reset and force closing the mail app. It may clear up the glitch before you remove and add your info again
    Reset
Hold down the sleep and home keys for about 20 seconds. When you see the silver apple, let go and let it reboot. No data will be lost.
    Force close an app
Double tap the home button. When you see the app previews on the screen scroll sideways if needed to get the preview in question on the screen. Flick that preview up and off the screen to close the app. Single tap the home button or home screen preview to exit the mode.
If those don't fix it then try to remove and put your info back in.

Quit Safari completely, clear Safari and reboot the iPad.
Go to the home screen first by tapping the home button. Double tap the home button and the recents tray will appear with all of your recent apps displayed at the bottom. Tap and hold down on any app icon until it begins to wiggle. Tap the minus sign in the upper left corner of the Safari app icon. Tap the home button or anywhere above the task bar.

  • Why can't I use my normal mail account for synching notes

    Hi there,
I maintain my father's iDevices/computers as he has Parkinsons and does not understand the technology behind how these services work. I need to maintain as simple a configuration as possible. As an example calendaring is difficult as new entries are not necessarily put in the calendar he uses and I have to talk him through how to show all calendars on a regular basis. I can't have his mail on IMAP as he cannot manage his mail and his mailbox fills up. I can't simply pay for storage ad infinitum - my local copy of his mail is about 6 GB and growing.
I have seen several discussions where it is clear that we *must* use an icloud.com e-mail account for synching notes via IMAP, but none of them have explained WHY I MUST USE @icloud.com e-mail. If this is an IMAP based service why can't I use any other IMAP server
I see that it is referred to as an "icloud account" but if I have to enable mail, it becomes an e-mail account, which I do not want as it will be confusing if there is an issue with the main mail server (which I maintain) it will present an option to use the icloud.com e-mail as a valid option to send the mail.
I do not turn on the mail option in icloud.. (only calendar, contacts, reminders and find my iphone). I find it dissapointing that this is now what seems to be a "requirement".

    thecpat wrote:

That is absolutely unnecessary, but more convenient to have icloud to sync your notes. I use other IMAPs as well and can sync my notes with google and yahoo and icloud(corresponding email is required in all cases). It is your choice and you can pick your poison, but you will find out that icloud is more convenient after you or him will lose his info few times. There is no requirement, you can even use the group that will not sync with anything "on my device" if you disable all of IMAPS. Icloud is just the one that you can call Apple and normally people prefer to work with Apple support way more then with google's or yahoo's, but that is again up to your preference.
