Mail can't send mail on home network

I am trying to help a friend who wants to move from Entourage to Mail. He has a MacBook Pro with 10.6.4 installed and his company uses Exchange 2003. He is moving to Mail due to serious calendar and contact syncing issues through Entourage and his iPhone/iCal/Address Book.
I have setup his Mail account to use IMAP with the Exchange Server. He can receive mail this way, but he cannot send it. Actually he can only send mail when he is at work on his company's network. I have turned off SSL and authentication is through Username and Password.
Funny thing is that Entourage can send and receive mail anywhere he has a connection, but Mail cannot. His company's IT department says that the settings I have in place should work.
How can I further troubleshoot this problem? Is it a server problem? I know 10.6's Mail doesn't support Exchange 2003, but I am not looking for full integration of exchange services.

You may be SOL as you need an SMTP server to send mail and the IT folks may not have it set up. You need a proper SMTP relay to send the mail, period. It doesn't matter what it's called, though convention usually has it set to smtp.example.com. mail.example.com would more often be the address for IMAP or POP connections.
Regarding the inability to send mail from an external network, this is the same problem: You still need an SMTP server to send emails. It's just that the SMTP server on the external network is likely different than the corporate SMTP server. What external network is it, and what is the SMTP server they have set up for machines within their network? Note that many networks don't enable outbound SMTP for random clients due to SPAM reasons.

  • Internal mail can not send. mail stored in draft folder.

    Hello all,
I have Exchange server 2010 installled on Win Server 2k8 R2 which is running on VMware workstatione. I installed three server OS (2k8 R2) and that server one is my  AD and DNS server. On another two OS, one is for Hub transport and CAS role and
second one is for Mailbox server. In exchange, I am able to configure new mailbox or Database. But through OWA, my mail cant send. User can able to login into server. He can access OWA page as well can access for Address book. But when I send the mail for
internal user, it is stored in draft folder. also meeting schedule can not send. I am testing exchange in lab environment. Please help me to resolve this issue.

    Hi,
From your description, I recommend you run the Test-ServiceHealth cmdlet to verify if all the Windows services that Exchange server requires have started, especially the Microsoft Exchange Transport service.
If all the services that Exchange server required are started, please use message tracking to trace these undelivered messages and check if there is any error.
    Hope it helps.

  • Mail - Can't Send Mail

When I try to send a message in Mail I get this message
"This message could not be delivered and will remain in your Outbox until it can be delivered. The connection to the server "smtp.mac.com" on port 25 timed out."
I've already tried opening the port in my router and firewall but still no luck. What's the problem?

Sometimes an ISP provider blocks one of your incoming
Mail ports and "won't notify you". ( Why? probably it's their protection software )
In my case Comcast blocked my Port 25 and my Outgoing kept bouncing.
    Incoming was fine.
Make sure when you change your Port to 587,
You also check "ON" the Secure Sockets Layer box right underneath,
    Then change Authentication: to Password
Then enter your name and password
    and click OK.
The reps at most of the providers
are useless and won't tell you
the second part of the solution.
It took me 2 days and 4 reps
at Comcast to find this out
and 10 hours of trying to
    clean my Mac...
    which they will always
    blame.

  • Mail can't send mails sometimes

Since I installed leopard on several MacBooks, some of the clients have the same problem.
When they try to send a mail, they get the answer that the mail server is offline and they have to choose another one. Problem is: the server is not offline and mail is correctly configured.
When you keep trying to send it, suddenly (sometimes after 30 second, sometimes after 2 minutes) the mails are being sent and everything is fine. When it takes to long, I delete all mail servers in de list and add them again: Then the mails are sending immidiatly. I'm used to work with computers and there probs, but people from administration and our schoolheads are not. So now I have to go 3times a day to "send their emails". Does anyone knows an answer?

    Tommy,
This partly sounds like the issue that can be addressed by manually entering the DNS address info, rather than letting Leopard auto-negotiate it. Opening the Activity monitor in Mail will usually show most of the time is spent connecting, and very little transmitting to send.
The part that sound unfamiliar is the Offline message. That sounds more like the SMTP can be perhaps be authenticated by Mail from the info on the Incoming server, and when that can be done, separately Authenticating the SMTP can cause a timeout or Offline error.
    More info, please.

  • Can receive mail, can not send mail and can connect to outgoing mail server

I am able to receive email, but I am not able to send email. I have run the Connection doctor - My email connects and logs in to the verizon mail server. My outgoing mail goes into a send folder but doesn't go out. I connect to the Outgoing Mail Server. Any suggestions?

change your outgoing mail server (SMTP) port in mail preferences to port 587.....

  • Can't send mail on other networks

We have been touring the country for two months now and find we often can't send mail (using Mail) on wireless networks in hotels and it happens when we are visiting friends as well. We can always receive mail, however. It's frustrating as we're keeping friends and family posted on our trip's progress. Any ideas??? We can send e-mail through our .mac account on the Apple web site but sending photos doesn't work as well.
Some hotel's systems work just fine.

    Hello Frederick.
Most, if not all ISPs now block the use of SMTP servers that are outside of their network (or not provided by the ISP) on Port 25 which is the standard port used by SMTP servers.
Some ISPs allow the use of an authenticated SMTP server only (such as the .Mac SMTP server) on Port 25 but some block its use regardless.
These restrictions are in place as part of an overall effort to prevent spam emanating from the ISP's domain.
Some free wireless networks (at hotels) will allow using an SMTP server that is outside of their network on Port 25 if the SMTP server is not authenticated (and why is a good question if so) and in that situation, selecting None for SMTP authentication should work.
Basically, you need to check with the hotel or the hotel's internet service provider regarding their required settings for using an SMTP server that is outside of their network.
When visiting friends and connecting to the internet via their ISP, you can try the following:
Go to Mail > Preferences > Accounts and under the Account Information tab for your .Mac account preferences at the SMTP server selection, select the Server Settings button below.
Enter 587 in place of 25 in the Server Port field and when finished, select OK to save the changed setting.
If this doesn't allow you to send mail with your .Mac account and SMTP server, you can try entering and using the SMTP server provided by your friend's ISP to send mail with your .Mac account which is invisible to all recipients.
When accessing free wireless networks at hotels, you can try using 587 for the Server Port for the .Mac SMTP server but as previously provided, you need to check with the hotel or the hotel's ISP to determine the required settings for using an SMTP server that is outside of their network.
If using 587 for the SMTP Server Port works, you should be able to keep this setting for the .Mac SMTP server when returning home. I use Port 587 for the .Mac SMTP server when connected to my ISP at home and I've also used it successfully when connected to a friend's wireless network via a different ISP.

  • I can not send mail when at school. Please help

I can not send mail when at school. Please help

What is the email provider? If it is from your home Internet service provider, they usually block sending when not on their network. If this is the case, see if you can log into the smtp server with username and password. If they allow that, you can enter that in the email account settings.

  • Can't send mail when using mobile broadband

    Hi
I am getting quite frustrated as I can't send mail when using my mobile broadband modem! I can receive mail, and surf the internet etc, but mail just wont send!(i get the usual cannot send try later/resend options). I thought this might be an issue with my mobile broadband but have recently reinstalled it. When at home on a wireless network I have no such issues.
    Any help appreciated

I am not using a SMTP it is a Pop3 domain name account from freeparking and uses mail.'NAME'.com for incoming and outgoing mail!
Even though your e-mail service uses the same URL for POP3 and SMTP servers, in the software sense you actually do have separate POP3 and SMTP servers, although they may be hosted on the same machine, or the requests are routed via some "smoke and mirrors" to the right host.
It is not related to my ISP at home, which is Virgin media. My mobile broadband provider is 3. I was thinking it might be that I need to change the port settings in mail when using my mobile modem, but don't know what to change them too(or how to do it!) or configure the modem differently but again not sure what to do there!
Check with the freeparking online help to see if it supports port 587 or some such.
Also try Mail's "Connection Doctor" (under the Window menu) when you're away from home to see if that shows anything useful.
Since you can send e-mail from that SMTP server when you're at home but not when you're using your mobile broadband, I think one of two possibilities is likely: (a) Your mobile broadband provider is blocking your attempts to access the freeparking SMTP server and/or port. (b) The freeparking SMPT server for some reason doesn't like being communicated with via your mobile broadband provider. I'd check with each of them to explore these options.
Does your mobile broadband provider have an SMTP server that you can use instead of the freeparking one?
My modem(Huawei E220) is not particularly Mac friendly as it is, and I believe Mail can be quite sensitive when servers don't respond immediately?
Yes. Mail seems to have a fixed time-out value for server responses.

  • Can't Send MAIL..... again

    hey...
    can;t send mail..
    10.4.10 on a macbook..
can send mail on my .MAC account, but my MAIL 2.0 is no good. it used to work fine...
i travel for a living, could the different log-on places have something to do with it.?
tried all the fixes on the Apple help site, no avail.
using port 587, removed and re-entered account, internet connection is fine...
want to use MAIL to send pix from my iPhoto's...
also, anyone know how to change the name in my account? somehow the spelling of my name is wrong, and every email i send says from 'blank' and it is wrong. looked at every piece of account info and they are all correct. where is the info for FROM: in an email stored...
    cheers..!!!
    ian

I'm having the same problem. I moved to a different apartment. I think my situation is this; my Mail says home and has my .mac account email address listed. My .mac account says .mac and has my .mac email address listed.
I've tried to change the Mail "home" so it doesn't say ,mac, but I haven't figured out how and when I change the email and server settings it tell me that it is an invalid directory.
So it's a circular puzzle and I can't seem to get out.
Is this your problem too? If not, do you know how to fix this one?

Try this first - Reset the iPad by holding down on the Sleep and Home buttons at the same time for about 10-15 seconds until the Apple Logo appears - ignore the red slider - let go of the buttons. (This is equivalent to rebooting your computer.)
Or this - Delete the account in Mail and then set it up again. Settings->Mail, Contacts, Calendars -> Accounts   Tap on the Account, then on the red button that says Remove Account.

  • Can't send Mail on dial up Earthlink?

We have set up a sub account for a grandson on Apple's Mail application. After many problems finally got Mail to receive message but can't send mail.
He gets the message: "his email earthlink.net can not be contaced on port 25, message delivery failed." The primary account works well.
He is on an eMac 10.3 with dial up to earthlink.net

Although I have cable modem service at home with Time Warner (RoadRunner), I've kept an old Earthlink dial-up account for use when traveling in case a high speed wired or wireless connection isn't available which is becoming less common.
If Earthlink is your ISP used for connecting to the internet via dial-up access, I use the following Earthlink SMTP settings for my Earthlink account.
    Outgoing Mail Server: smtpauth.earthlink.net
Server Port: 25 (which should work if connecting to the internet via Earthlink dial-up access).
Use Secure Sockets Layer (SSL): Off or not selected.
    Authentication: MD5 Challenge-Response
User Name: The entire Earthlink email address.
Password: The account's password - the same password used to check the incoming mail server for new messages.
