"Mail can't verify the identity of" after 10.6.4 update.

So our Exchange 2003 server uses a wildcard certificate so we can protect multiple resources without buying 10 different SSL certs. It's been working perfectly so far, until I updated to 10.6.4. Now I get the following error. I've even deleted the account in Mail.app and re-added and it still won't take the wildcard SSL. The error is:
"Mail can't verify the identity of "mail.xxxxxxxxxxx.net" +(our domain)+ "An SSL error has occurred and a secure connection to the server cannot be made."

Great. I've done nothing else and it has resolved itself. I hate when that happens because I can't conclude what the final fix was. I can only guess that accepting the wildcard SSL fixed it since that was the last thing I did.
So, I can only conclude at this point that accepting the SSL and rebooting(?) fixed the issue.

  • Mail can't verify the identity of the Earthlink smtp Intermediate certifica

So, I'm seeing Mail produce a "Verify Certificate" window when Mail tries to connect to smtpauth.earthlink.net.
Further verbiage starts "The certificate for this server has expired...".
Then I click "Show Certificate" and in the lower pane, the certificate info that appears lists expiration in August, 2011. Clicking one level up in the upper pane, where there is an icon with a white X in a red circle, shows an expired certificate at the "Intermediate certificate authority".
I'm leery of checking the box "always trust "smtpauth..."" and of the options under "Trust" in the lower pane, which are "use system defaults", "always trust", and "never trust". These are all too categorical for my taste.
I have no idea if the issue is with Earthlink, Apple, Mail, or something else. I've never seen this issue in many years of using Mail.
How do I update the "Intermediate certificate"? shouldn't this be automatic?
Can anyone shed any light on this?
Could this have changed on its own? could someone be hijacking my Mail?
I've also experienced that inbound mail from family overseas was not delivered for about a week when sent to my Earthlink address, nor were they given any failure message.
Earthlink's web site "support" is about useless on this topic, and so is there human support from past experiences.

    Ernie, thanks for the reply.
Alas, your wording is a bit over my head, but let me take a stab at it.
When I click the "show certificate" button, in Mail's "Verify Certificate" window, I can see in the resulting window's top pane, a "valicert" url, with four subordinate levels referring to RSA, Earthlink, Earthlink, and smtp.
The third subordinate level (the second Earthlink) has an icon with a red dot and white X. When I click on that level, the lower pane shows the details and yes, that certificate, which would logically be the "intermediate" referred to, has expired.
There are no instructions on how to refresh the certificate, get a new one, etc. One would think one's ISP would take care of this.
Nonetheless, this certificate doesn't seem to have to be valid, as mail come in and goes out. But as noted, some is not coming in. Which makes me suspicious.
Does that respond to your question?
Earthlink is my ISP and the mail account I'm referring to is set up as a POP account. Earthlink appears to contract to "valicert" for this piece of the email puzzle.
    Thanks.

  • Mac OS 10.7 Lion "Mail Can't Verify the Identity of "-Server-".

This has been an issue for years, but didn't really become a serious problem until another issue (See ~ Massive Deletion of Junk Mail Lockup) conflicted and locked Mail App.  I must force quit Mail to try another tactic.
Upon launching, nothing has kept all the "deleted" messages from all reopening (this takes about 10 minutes) and not being accessible because each account sequentially has pop up windows that are not responsive.
Either the host server's certificate is not valid or Mail doesn't recognize the certificate, so each time I launch Mail, it asks what to do for each account.

Great. I've done nothing else and it has resolved itself. I hate when that happens because I can't conclude what the final fix was. I can only guess that accepting the wildcard SSL fixed it since that was the last thing I did.

  • Mail can't verify the identity of "server.domain.edu"

Mail gave this error when trying to send or receive email even though the server is trusted and the certificate is in fact valid and verifiable.
I had this problem and couldn't find a good explanation on any of these discussions. Most suggestions that worked involved disabling SSL, which isn't an option for me. Ultimately I found an explanation on VeriSign's site via SSL Shopper:
    http://www.sslshopper.com/ssl-certificate-not-trusted-error.html
In my case, using VeriSign, I was missing the intermediate certificate. I followed the SSL Shopper link to VeriSign <https://knowledge.verisign.com/support/ssl-certificates-support/index?page=con tent&id=AR657>, chose the type of Secure Server certificate I needed <http://www.verisign.com/support/verisign-intermediate-ca/secure-site-intermedi ate/index.html> and then copied and pasted it into a plain text file, adding a .cer suffix.
Once the intermediate cert was created, I just imported it into my Login Keychain via Keychain Access and all was well.

Same for me - Mail 4.2 and SL 10.6.2.
The problem (as far as I can tell) is that the Mail.app is somehow trying to use the wrong certificate - in my case the account is imap.mymail.com and Mail.app is trying to connect to this server by using the certificate associated with imap.google.com - and of course there is a host name mismatch.

  • Mail can't verify the identity of ...

I'm getting this error for an account I deleted some time ago (probably three months.)
The account doesn't even even show up in accounts. Can anyone help?

Open the Preferences and look at an account. On the Account Information tab, click on the SMTP dropdown and select Edit SMTP Server List…
If the old account smtp server is still in the list, delete it.

  • HT6065 After upgrading to OS X Mavericks v 10.9.1, keep getting "safari can't verify the identity of the website" and asks to show certificate, cancel or continue.  Is anyone else having this issue?

Hello.  Just upgraded to OS X Mavericks v 10.9.1.  Now I keep getting "safari can't verify the identity of the website" error.  I looked for other updates, but none are available. Am I doing something wrong?  Didn't do this before the upgrade, now I can't seem to log into anything through safari.

Most websites are checked to make sure they do not contain viruses or that they are properly encrypted.  If safari cannot identify a website's ceritificate, check if other browers do the same thing (make sure they are up to date browsers), if they all say it cannot be verified, then the site was probably hijacked and you should run a full scan of your computer for viruses, unless the page was blocked by safari and redirected to something that said fraudulent webstie detected.

  • Safari can't verify the identity of the website.........

So yesterday I removed one stick of memory and added another (larger) stick of memory. This is the only thing I have done latly. I had surfed the net after changing ram and nothing seemed wrong. Today when I go to log in to my e-mail I get the warning that "Safari cant verify the identity of the website........" Found it a little odd. I went to another website where I am always logged in however this time I wasn't. When I clicked on the login button the safari warning appeared again. I checked two other sites that I frequent and am always logged into except now I'm not. It even appeared when I logged in to post this queston. Is this something to worrie about? Is there an virus or spyware I could have picked up somewhere? Is this a security issue? what's the problem? This is just too weird and I'm a little paranoid anyways.

    Hello Linc,
    April 13, 2015
For years you've been a most valuable asset to me here at Apple.Com.
I REALLY wish I could speak with you on the phone, because this is a little heavy.
But for now I am TRYING to find the instructions/article that appears when you click the question mark "?".... that appears at the bottom of the drop down message which reads as follows....To see an image of it...the scroll halfway down and someone named WildBill posted an image of the drop down that is associated with the subject of this thread.....One of the 2 links below will show you a picture of the drop down and question mark.
FIX for: "Safari can't verify the identity of the website" - certificate not valid
Below is something that may or not be relative....but I just wanted you to see a photo of the drop down warning,...I think the one ABOVE is the one....the one below I'm not sure.....I am so tired right now.
    https://discussions.apple.com/thread/6983714?start=15&tstart=0
Below is an article apple sent me but this is not what I was looking for
OS X: Keychain Access asks for keychain "login" after changing login password - Apple Support
There is a question mark that when you click on it sends you to an article/instructions on the side telling you what to do, but since I no longer get this pop up I can't find THAT article/instructions.
I'm pretty sure the headline of the article read something like this.
"What to do if Safari can't verify a security certificate as valid".....something like that.
The reason I need to see those instructions again is I need to retrace my steps to make sure I didn't make a mistake when I was in Keychain Access.
I called Apple and they didn't seemed interested in helping me.
    Perhaps you can.
    Thanks Linc,
    Apple Dreamer
P.S....How do I know if you respond to this?.....Should of I left my phone number or email address?

In your Keychain under 'login' delete the VeriSign certificates and then quit and restart all browsers/itunes/app store.

  • Safari can't verify the identity of website. What to do?

I am getting a "certificate invalid" message using Safari on a number of sites, including my bank, Apple iTunes, insurance company, and many others.   The message is: "Safari can't verify the identity of the website (then the specific site is named)". I have spoken with my bank and they say it is an issue with Safari and I should try another browser.  I tried Firefox and the connection to the sites is perfect, no issues or warnings at all.  What is wrong with Safariu and what, other than stop using it, can be done to correct the certificate issue?

    Back up all data.
Unlock the Network preference pane, if necessary, by clicking the lock icon in the lower left corner and entering your password. Cllck Advanced, open the DNS tab, and change the server addresses to the following:
              8.8.8.8
              8.8.4.4
That's Google DNS. Click OK, then Apply.
    In Safari, select
Safari ▹ Preferences... ▹ Privacy ▹ Remove All Website Data
and confirm. If you’re using another browser, empty the cache. Test. Any difference?
    Notes:
    1. If you lose Internet access after making the above change to your network settings, delete the Google servers in the  Network preference pane, then select the TCP/IP tab and click Renew DHCP Lease. That should restore the original DNS settings; otherwise restore them yourself. Remember that you must click Apply in order for any changes to take effect.
    2. I don't use Google DNS myself, though I have tested it, and I'm not recommending it or any other DNS provider; the server addresses are offered merely for testing purposes. There may be privacy and technical issues involved in using that service, which you should investigate personally before you decide whether to keep the settings. Other public DNS services exist.

  • Hi, I am having trouble with my Internet on my Macbook. Every time I try and go to a site it has a pop up block that says something along the lines of "Safari can't verify the identity of the website."

Below that there is more, it says," The certificate for this website is invalid. You might be connecting to a website that is pretending to be (Whatever the name of the site is) which could put your confidential info at risk. Would you like to connect to the website anyway?" and it give the options of show certificate, cancel, and continue. But the thing i dont understand is that it does this for basically EVERY page i visit. even facebook. and when i click "continue" it alows me to go to the page but limits what i can do and only shows certain things. i'm very frusterated with it. Help Me!

This issue was resolved! I didnt think about restoring my computer to factory settings but I did and now my computer works like brand new. basically, just back up your files and do the following:

  • What does it mean when you get a notice saying that ITunes can't verify the identity of the server

Yes, if you don't bother to change your password. You may also want to seriously consider turning on two step authentication.

  • Mail Can't Verify!

Okay, I still get the ole' "Mail can't verify the identity of ------". I hit Show Certificate and choose ALWAYS TRUST but this keeps happening over and over again.
    Anybody?

    Hi mabletonga;
    Love your little video!!!!!!
Thanks, Man! That's me when I'm working on a Windows PC but not when I'm home on my Mac!
    No problem.
I sincerely apologize if I was 'RUDE' because I get like sometimes. I was just becoming tired of all the people that just complain in their post and from the replies of people that THINK they KNOW how to *FIX IT!* Like my first post to you was just *OFF THE WALL* and I knew that it was not accurate. I want to see if you would reply with more information without me trying to prod you for it. But your reply to my post just hit the wrong nerve. So Sorry.
Okay, ... my choices are Show Certificate, Cancel or Connect.
Well now, this is what I'm talking about because *IT'S ALL IN THE DETAILS!* I really do appreciate it and now that I have more information, I can find the reason why.
*+_"If there is a reason; there is a purpose because without a purpose, a reason would not exist!"_+*
Here's the purpose for the reason to exist ...
*+"If your mail server uses an SSL certificate that is signed by an unknown authority, Mail displays a message indicating that it can’t verify the identity of the mail server, because it can’t verify the server’s certificate. Although you can connect to the mail server, Mail will continue to warn you about the server’s unverified certificate each time you open Mail. To stop the message from appearing, you need to indicate that you trust the mail server’s certificate."+*
But you've said, *"Been There, Done That, Didn't Work So What's Next?"*
*+_"What we require now is a feat of linguistic legerdemain and a degree of intrepidity."_+*
When I choose Show Certificate there is a check box to click “Always trust “Washington.hostforweb.net” when connecting to “mail.xxxxxxxxxxx.com”... I normally choose Always Trust for When using this certificate ...
And I assume that this means you JUST click on the check box, right?
... Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) and X.509 Basic Policy.
Hmm, well you're NOT going to be very happy about this BUT and this is a *REALLY BIG BUT* all you need to do is JUST click the check box and *NOTHING ELSE!* Then ...
Then I hit Connect and I’m asked for my password. I enter it and then off the mail goes.
... and "Wish Upon A Star" that you'll *NEVER EVER* see it again!
Laziness had me avoid typing all of this before.
And my laziness MADE me a Computer Geek so I could sit on my BUTT all day!
Sorry. Hope this is more clear.
No problem and thanks again for your time to 'Spell Out' for this Old Man. Yes Sir, this may be enough to clear up your issue but let me know how is goes.
    Good Luck!
    Later ...

I assume the lost device (iPhone) and the device (ipad) one uses to find the lost item must have identical Apple IDs , PWs as well as identical iCloud identification?

Back now.  Are you saying that you entered you iCloud ID and password in the Find My iPhone app (see photo below), and it said you don't have an iCloud account?  Are you sure this is the ID for your iCloud account (check Settings>iCloud next to Account at the top on the device you are trying to track)?
Also, did you try using this ID and password on icloud.com on your computer to try to track it, as explained here: http://help.apple.com/icloud/#mmfc0f2442?  Did that work?
