Mail changes default sending account intermittently

I'm running OSX 10.6 and Mail 4.6.
The default send account  designation has recently become screwy. Have changed no settings. Seems  to pick an account at random. What I want to use as a default send account is  at the top of the list in Accounts, as recommened. It is Gmail IMAP. Mail has  changed it to a different Gmail account, but also once an SBC account. If I don't  pay attention to the From line, I end up sending from the wrong account.  Oddly, my iPhone has had the same problem--beginning around the same  time. Don't use iCloud.

Look in Mail, Preferences, Account Information tab for each account in question and see if the option at the bottom of the page for Outgoing Mail Server 'Use only this server' is checked.
This screenshot is from Mail 6.6 and an iCloud account (OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion, because I'm not on my 10.6.8 system at the moment), but I'm certain there's a similar option in Mail on OS X 10.6.8 regardless of which email type (POP or IMAP) is in use.

  • 10.10.2 changes default email account

Since the 10.10.2 upgrade mail has changed the account it selects for default when I send a message. It seems to have defaulted to the order in the system preferences internet account panel. There doesn't seem to be an easy way to drag an account to the top, and I am a little reluctant to delete and read accounts in hope that the readied accounts will go to the bottom of the list.

    Hey waldhaus1,
Thanks for the question. If I understand correctly, you want to change what the default account in Mail is. I would recommend that you read this article, it may be able to help the issue.
Mac OS X: Mail - How to change the default account and "From" address
Mac OS X 10.2 and later
The "From" address for a new message will generally be the same as the "To" address of the message that is currently selected. If no message is selected, then the "From" address associated with the currently selected mailbox will be used, if there is one. Otherwise, the default "From" address will be used as described above.
Changing the send account on a per-message basis
When two or more email accounts are set up in Mail, the Account pop-up menu appears in the New Message window. You can use this menu to select an email account other than the default.
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.
    Have a good one,
    Mario

  • Setting default send account

How do I change the default sending account? With several email accounts to keep track of and only a few that send mail (outbound) I would like to make my MobileMe account the default for sending messages. How do I change the default, which happens to be one that does not "send" messages (no outbound access). I sometime forget to change the account when sending and the message sits in the Out box.

    Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendars
    Select your account.
    Then
    SMTP -> Primary Server
at least that is how it is for standard imaps!
The actual setting of the default mail account to be used is at:
Settings -> Mail, Contacts, Calendar -> Scroll to the bottom youll find Default Account there (messages sent outside of the mail program)

  • Default sending account in BT Yahoo Beta

My BT Yahoo email address is set up as 'default sending account' as viewed in Mail Options. However when I compose a new email it selects the first email from a drop-down list of sub-accounts instead of my default. If I fail to notice this I end up sending an email from the 'wrong' address.
How can I ensure that my emails are sent from my main default email account?

    Spinland,
Try this and see if it helps you....

  • Why does Mail change the sender email address?

My email address from work has a subdomain: "[email protected]".
Although my mac Mail account is set up correctly with that email address in the account settings, when I send mail, users receive it showing that the sender (from:) is "[email protected]" - it drops the subdomain and replies to that address get bounced back.
Does anybody know why this is happening?
    Thanks -

In the From header of the copy of the message in teh sent box,
it reads correctly as [email protected]
Does this provide me a clue?
Sure it does. What you see in Sent is what Mail sends to the outgoing (SMTP) server. If the message gets changed afterwards, some agent other than Mail (probably the outgoing server) is doing it...
I know that Gmail’s outgoing server, for example, does this. In order to be able to use Gmail's SMTP server with another address, you must first enable that address in Gmail's Settings > Accounts page, and let Gmail validate it by verifying that you do indeed own it. If you don't do this, even though Mail will correctly send the message from the address you specify, Gmail's SMTP server will silently change it to the address associated with the Gmail account that corresponds to the username specified during SMTP authentication, instead of refusing to send the message as other SMTP servers would do in those circumstances.

  • Multiple mail accounts - how to get around default 'send' account

I have multiple mail accounts on my iphone - personal, work, etc... No matter which account I send from, the recipient always sees it as coming from my personal mail account. I was told this is a apple restriction - that the 'default' account in your mail settings means that only one account can be set. This is not how it used to work previously...? Any suggestiongs ?

Hi DavBMan, thanks for your reply. Yes I do know about seeing the 'from' address and manually changing it. Even when I do that, even though the phone shows the correct from address (even shows in the correct sent mailbox on the iphone), the recipient still sees another (my personal) 'from' address no matter what.
Do you know of any info on the Apple support site for this? I haven't been able to find anything.
    Again, thanks for your help

  • Changing default email account in iPhone mail

    Hello,
I have initially setup my Mail with my "primary" .mac email address, but the problem is that any email I reply to on my iPhone uses that email account & alias, even if the email was sent to another email alias provided my my .mac account. This does not happen on the Mac version of Mail.
How can I either have the iPhone version of Mail use the same email alias for sent messages depending on which alias the incoming mail was sent to?
I tried changing the default email alias in Mail Settings but did not get a successful authentification. But if I can change the default email alias for sent messages, that would be OK too.
    Thanks
    Lex.

I've had this question for a while myself.
I do have my iPhone IMAP'd to a gmail account. In that gmail account I have set up various address that I send from, and I have setup Gmail to reply to the address an email was sent to. From within Gmail, I can set any of my addresses in the FROM field when I reply or compose an email. I am using Gmail as a funnel to catch all mail I get from various accounts, and I wish to use this Gmail funnel as my only account to check on my iPhone.
On my Mac Mail on my desktop, I can accomplish what I want by having multiple accounts setup but then setting them as OFFLINE. This prevents Mac Mail from retrieving duplicate messages from multiple accounts, but it allows me to change the address in the FROM field of any message when I reply or compose.
On my iPhone, the only way to change the address in my FROM field is to have an active account online on the phone. Once I turn an account OFF, that address is no longer available in the FROM field. And the mail that comes in from Gmail does not automatically set the FROM to be the same as the address the mail was sent to, despite having that setup at Gmail.
Is there any way to have the iPhone do what Mac Mail does, allowing me to set an address in the FROM field without having to have that address set up as an active account on the phone?
    Any workaround for this?

  • Unable to set the default sending account in Mail?

I have three IMAP accounts set up in Mail and when I want to send an outgoing email can easily use the drop down to pick which account is used. The issue is I'd like to specify which of the three is used by default.  I've searched on how to do this and the supposed answers are not working for me.
First, in Mail preferences, it's been posted you can drag the order of the accounts. That does not work for me at all, they are not draggable.
Second, in System Preferences there's been some talk of setting defaults in the Mail, Contacts & Calendars panel. When I try to access one of the accounts there it asks me for the password, I enter the correct one, and it fails saying unable to verify the password.
Can this be done at all? Is there a bug in System Preferences?
    Thanks in advance!

  • When composing a new message in mail on OS X 10.9.2, is there a way to change the "sending" account on a per-message basis?

I just got a new MacBook Pro and when composing a new message, I can no longer choose which e-mail account I want to use for the new message.  It also does not show which account I'm using in the e-mail composition panel.  Is there a way to fix this?

Click on the pull down window next to From: and you should be able to select the individual account you want to send from.  The account that you want to send from must be an Enabled account in the Account Preferences of Mail.

  • Mail Shortcut for sending account?

Is there a way to create a shortcut to choose the "From" account in mail?

    The thing is this;
Earlier I was able to set a shortcut in System Preferences by typing the exact name as it appears in the Sender menu. Then I changed name in one of the accounts, and also in the System Preferences and after that none of the shortcuts works!
If you aren't aware of this it's made from the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts. As described here:http://articles.directorym.com/Set_Mails_sending_account_via_keyboard_shortcut-a 962070.html
I had a function that worked flawless, made a simple change, and now none of the shortcuts work.
    Any ideas?
PS. I don't want to use the "Tab to all things"-feature because I think it's messy.

  • I've used a terminal command to change default send keyboard shortcut and now it doesn't work at all!

My friend provided me with a Terminal command allow me to use Cmd+Enter to send an email (muscle memory from Outlook, hard to forget!)
    Command was:
    defaults write com.apple.mail NSUserKeyEquivalents -dict-add "Send" "@\\U21a9"
Did that, and it didn't add the Cmd+Enter instruction but removed the Cmd+Shift+D instruction, so I had NO keyboard shortcut. Then Cmd+Enter started working. For a while. Now I'm back to getting the irritating error bleep sound, and having no functional keyboard shortcut for sending mail.
    Does anybody have any advice?

    Try
    defaults delete com.apple.mail NSUserKeyEquivalents
    Then, relaunch Mail.

  • Shortcut for Mail Sending Account suddenly doesn't work!

A year ago or so I created shortcuts so I easily could switch what account the current mail was sent from.
If you aren't aware of this it's made from the System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts. As described here:http://articles.directorym.com/Set_Mails_sending_account_via_keyboard_shortcut-a 962070.html
This worked without hesitation after installing Lion a month ago.
Tonight, I changed one of the my emails, and hence I needed to change the shortcut. Eg: from Steve Jobs <[email protected]> to Steve Jobs <[email protected]>
After this change none of them work! Before, I could see the shortcuts in the account menu, but now I see nothing. And I haven't change anything else!!
I have restarted, and tried fifty other things with no success. I use these commands extremely often since I mail from a lot of different companies. Now it's a real pita to change the sending account.
The question is probably this: How do I setup shortcuts for the sending accounts in Lion?
    Please help!
Edit: I just noticed that when edit the shortcut in System Preferences it automatically adds an ">" in front of the shortcut name! Someone else that notice this?
Message was edited by: Andreas Carlsson

I solved it by removing the name and just using the email address in the shortcut.
But I think this is solved in 10.8 though.

    Powerbook G4 512ram 1.67ghtz   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

The default sending account for a new message and the outgoing mail server used with an account are different things.
Tiger Mail includes a default account selection for send new mail from.
Go to Mail > Preferences > Composing and under Addressing, you can select a default account for "Send new mail from".

Is is possible to have the default mail account (I have three: University, personal, and @me.com) change automatically according to the primary email in the "To:" field?

Well, no.  But it will change automatically according to any email you're replying to, based on what mailbox the original was sent from.
Mail->Preferences->Composing->Send new messages from "Account of selected mailbox."
