Mail: "connection failed", problem associated with software update

When I attempt to get mail, I frequently get a symbol on the side panel of an encircled triangle enclosing an exclamation point. If I click on the symbol, I get a message that says (condensed): “connection failed, check settings for your POP account, server error encountered, connection timed out on port 0, do you want to stay offline or go online.” If I click go online, the usual spinning circle appears and then sometimes I get my mail. Sometimes I have to repeat the process several times before I get mail. I am, of course, always online; the connection has never failed. This problem started some time ago after I updated Apple software. I called my ISP and they made a few changes in my mail preferences, but that didn't help. I used disc utility to repair disc permissions and that helped but (strangely enough) only for a few days. This problem was discussed several years ago in message #1724339 but nobody could solve it. check out the "Nokia 808 Belle FP1 bug: WLAN works, but not all ap..." thread. Looks like you are having the same issue, and there's quite some info on this issue in that thread. The issue must be related to Symbian Belle somehow, since Anna and S60v5 are reported to perform well under the same conditions.

    I've been using it on all of my computer without any problems. Remember you won't see any positive comments here. Everyone here is complaining about a problem. If you want a good experience with any upgrade or update first make a backup from which you can boot the computer. If you are installing an update, like 10.10.3 for example, always download and install the Combo Updater - OS X Yosemite 10.10.3 Combo Update. Before you install any update or upgrade over an existing system you should do this:Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions:
    Boot to the Recovery HD:
    Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Select the Recovery HD and click on the downward pointing arrow button.
    Repair
    When the recovery menu appears select Disk Utility and press the Continue button. After Disk Utility loads select the Macintosh HD entry from the the left side list.  Click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If Disk Utility reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit Disk Utility and return to the main menu. Select Restart from the Apple menu.

    I recently purchased a universal remote that you have to hook up to your computer to program. Every time I try to run the software on my Macbook, I get the following error message: "Connection Failed: The server may not exist or it is not operational at this time. Check the server name or IP address and your network connection and try again."
    I have scoured the web and cannot find any other Mac users running into this problem. So, I don't believe the software is the problem. (Plus, I first used a version that came from a CD, and then threw that in the trash and tried a version I downloaded off their website.) I spoke to tech support and they couldn't figure out the problem. I know the remote works fine because I was able to program it using my neighbor's PC.
    I've run the software both using my wireless network and while plugged directly into my cable modem, but that didn't work. So, I'm guessing that it has something to do with some type of setting I have on my Mac. I don't have a firewall up (I don't think). I don't have any type of special security software running that I'm aware of. Can anyone think of a reason I would get this type of error, in general?

Clearly there are some applications I need to remove and no doubt my HD could do with a 'spring clean'. My Mac 'Safe Booted' when I turned it on this morning.
    I use many different softwares, some web-based. The decision to upgrade to OSX Yosemite is because I was unable to attend a Webinar this week using GoToMeeting downloadable software. GoToMeeting have upgraded their system and my OS is no longer supported. Other websites like VImeo no longer support my version of Safari. I tend to use Chrome if Safari isn't compatible.

    If your using WEP encryption yes, Apple has discontinued that becaues it's worthless. WEP (and WPA) is cracked so encryption makes no sense.
    Get a new Wireless N router, set it up with WPA2 (AES) Personal and two different 20+ randon letter/numbersymbol character passwords
    One for Admin access only of the router, keep this on paper off all comptuers in a safe someplace.
    One for entering into devices, computers etc for Internet Access Only.
    You need the long and random password to defeat brute force attacks by GPU software that the hackers have now.
    Also if you give out the password to another, they can't hack the network with the guest access password.
    Computers remember the internet password, so anyone with access to your machines or network will have the password.
    Since you have another Admin only password, they can't hack in. got it?
    You don't need "Invisible" or "MAC Address filtering" that's a waste of time as hackers can sniff a network and causes issues getting on the network.

    Reset your device and try it again: hold down the home button along with the sleep/wake button until you see the apple, then let go.(No data loss)
    Also make sure you have enough free space on the device for the update file - usually requires 2 to 3 times the actual size of the file to be able unpack & install.

    That has nothing to do with an update server. Do the following:
    Place the iOS device in Recovery Mode and then connect to your computer and restore via iTunes. The iPod will be erased.
    iOS: Forgot passcode or device disabled
    If recovery mode does not work try DFU mode.

    To restore from backup see:
    iOS: Back up and restore your iOS device with iCloud or iTunes       
    If you restore from iCloud backup the apps will be automatically downloaded. If you restore from iTunes backup the apps and music have to be in the iTunes library since synced media like apps and music are not included in the backup of the iOS device that iTunes makes.
    You can redownload most iTunes purchases by:                         
    Downloading past purchases from the App Store, iBookstore, and iTunes Store        
      If problem what happens or does not happen and when in the instructions? When you successfully get the iPod in recovery mode and connect to computer iTunes

    Hi everyone. I'm getting the following error message when trying to download some items via Software Update:
    "None of the checked updates could be saved. A networking error has occurred: Cannot open file (-3001). Make sure you can connect to the Internet, then try again."
    This is for the following downloads:
    iPhoto 7.1.4
    iDVD 7.0.2
    iMovie 7.1.4
    Security Update 2008-005
    Any ideas? I have no problems with Internet access at all. I'm running a new 24" Intel iMac 3.06 GHz with Mac OS 10.5.4

    Hi baltwo.
    I was able to manually download the iPhoto, iDVD and iMovie updates from the Apple website and install them with no problem.
    After I downloaded the Security Update 2008-005 and tried to install it I get the following error message:
    "You cannot install Security Update 2008-005 (Intel) on this volume. This volume does not meet the requirements for this update."
    Is this why the other downloads were prevented? I've never had problems with Software Update before.

  • Not connecting to Music Store or Software Updates (but Internet works fine)

    About a month ago, I moved in to a new apartment and set up a new cable internet connection. After a very frustrating installation process (Netgear is not very Mac-friendly), the Internet worked. A couple days later, I realized I couldn't get onto the iTunes Music Store. It just tries for a while and then says it can't reach it and for me to check my Network Diagnostics.
    I tried to get to the music store when I was at work on an Ethernet connection (as opposed to my usual wireless), but that didn't work either. I also realized today that my Software Updates aren't working, because they cannot connect either. It just tells me to click on Network Diagnostics, which I always do to no avail.
    Also tonight, I realized I only have 4.5 GB space left on my computer. This computer is less than a year old, and I don't see how this is possible. I deleted a lot of things, and that didn't make any difference. Could I possibly have a virus? I thought Macs didn't even get viruses!? What should I do?

    I got this message from you, but I still have the same problem of not being able to connect to the iTunes store, software updates, Safari, CDDB, Help, Southwest's Ding, my weather widget, and several other things. I found a post you did in July where you helped someone else who it sounded like had the same problems that I am having. However, I tried your approaches to that -- isolating the problem (it affects all accounts on this computer), typing in that number (17.254.3.183) in Safari (says the server stopped responding), and now I really hope I don't have to back up everything and start over. I think this started when I moved to this apartment and set up a new Comcast cable internet account. I have been able to live with it because I have a computer at work and spend most of my time there anyway, but at times when I want to burn CDs, it really drives me crazy.     My Mac also intermittently goes into Sleep mode, repeatedly, unprompted by me.  I suspect a connection between these two problems.
    I have tried deleting the /Library/Updates folder.  It hasn't helped.  The update still won't install, and my Mac won't shut down without my forcing the quit.
    Help please!

  • Permissions Error Installing Graphic Update With Software Update

    I tried to install Leopard Graphic Update 1.0 using Software Update and got a permissions error. There was also a message saying the package had been moved to the trash and to use the Finder to install it.
    There was no package in the trash so I manually downloaded and installed Leopard Graphic Update 1.0.
    I am running 10.5.2 on a 1 GHz iMac G4.
    Has any one else seen this problem? Any idea what is wrong?

    Ditto for me when installing Leopard Graphics Update 1.0 via Software Update.
    Manual download and install worked w/o a hitch.
    Curious Note: /Library/Updates/Leopard Graphics Update/Packages/SUGraphicsDrivers200801-1.0.dist had odd permissions in that the admin group had read access but a different admin account had write access. This was the last account logged in prior to my upgrading to Leopard from the DVD, but Software Update has never been run from that account. I gave the admin group write access (from the Get Info window) prior to manually installing the update. I doubt that had anything to do with the manual install working, but it might have something to do with Software Update failing.

    Unless you have a backup from which you can restore, yes you will lose all of your data and settings.
    You should be able to sync your content back to the iPad if you have been syncing with iTunes all along. If you don't sync with iTunes, you can download much of your paid content again for free as long as you use the same Apple ID. This explains downloading past purchases.

    Unfortunately, at this point, you must restore the device before you can move on. There is nothing you can do to avoid it now.

    I believe because you migrated from a Nokia to an iPhone you need to register the Bn phone number with your Apple ID so it can be used for iMessage. The Pn number seems to be the only one registered
