Mail constantly "replacing" deleted outbox messages

One of my sons tried to send messages to his hotmail account from my ibook. This seems to be causing spinning disk syndrome. When I try to delete the messages from the outbox they keep getting replaced. Mail crashes sometimes but not others, but always I get the spinning disk on opening. I always have to force quit to turn off the computer.
Any takers?

The messages which seemed to be causing the problems are in the "Delivered" box. Initially I got the spinning disk again, but have now been able to delete them without them returning. Should I delete the "Delivered" box?
Well, normally there's a 'sent' box where messages that have been sent are placed. If this 'delivered' folder is just a folder then yes.
My default mail account is no longer there in mail preferences. Can I easily restore this (I couldn't find the tab for adding an account)? Before I do, does this all sound...hunky dory?
If you click on the name 'Mail' in the menu bar and choose preferences/accounts you can add a new account and enter the information you used to set up with.

  • Apple mail won't delete a message on the server but my iPhone will...

    Hello,
I have an iMac running the latest version of Snow Leopard, and use Apple Mail with an IMAP server. Recently, I noticed that when I try to delete a message on my apple mail, that it won't get deleted on the server or my iphone. However, if I do the reverse and delete the message on my iPhone, it gets removed from the server and apple mail.
I have setup Apple Mail as an IMAP account, and on the iphone Active Synch Exchange for the same account. I tried to switch the Apple Mail account to an exchange IMAP account, and it made no difference. Any ideas on how to address this problem - it is really annoying to have to delete the same message twice? Thanks!

    Hi ernie,
Thanks for the help. As for the mailbox preferce I have it set on move deleted to seperate folder (one week old).
Here's the strange part - i have 1 email, only 1 email that will not delete and that's in my inbox, now when i click on view "Show Deleted Message" is greyed out..

I also have 1 email and only 1 email in my outbox that will not delete and when i click on view it shows "Show Deleted message".

  • Replacing Deleted 'Sent' Messages

I managed to delete all of my sent files. I have the Volume duped on another drive. I copied the dupe Sent File folder into the Sent folder of the afflicted Mail App but I can't get Mail to recognize the sent messages I replaced, I have restarted both the app and my Intel iMac w/ Leopard. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I dare not ask how you managed to delete all your Sent messages; the answer may be too painful to bear. In any case, try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. Go to ~/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
    3. Restart Mail, wait for it to import your existing messages, then see if the problem is resolved.

  • Since installing mountain lion i have a problem with mail. when i delete a message close  and open mail the message has come back. please help!

Since installing Mountain Lion i have a problem with Mail. I delete a number of messages from the same person but keep the newest message in my Inbox. I actually delete them from the Trash. The next time i open Mail the deleted messages are back again. Can anybody please help as this is getting annoying. Thanks in Anticipation.

Problems such as yours are sometimes caused by files that should belong to you but are locked or have wrong permissions. This procedure will check for such files. It makes no changes and therefore will not, in itself, solve your problem.
    First, empty the Trash.
Triple-click the line below to select it, then copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C):
    find ~ $TMPDIR.. \( -flags +sappnd,schg,uappnd,uchg -o ! -user $UID -o ! -perm -600 -o -acl \) 2> /dev/null | wc -l
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V). The command may take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear.
The output of this command, on a line directly below what you entered, will be a number such as "41." Please post it in a reply.

  • Mac Mail Constantly Downloading thousands of messages from Gmail IMAP

    Hello,
I have seen similar problems posted, but no real solutions.  I use Google apps +(and regular gmail) and like to keep copies of my messages saved locally on my Macbook.  When I setup an IMAP account in Mac Mail ver 4.6, it downloads the messages fine, but then constantly keeps 'updating' and downloading more messages - the status indicates x number of messages out of 20,000+
This eats up my hard drive space very quickly!
    Any solutions?
    Much appreciated!

  • Mail will not delete any messages

I have a 10.5.6 server running my mail services. I have a 10.5.6 client checking it. I currently have over 4,000 messages in my inbox and they all get downloaded when I check my mail. If I go to the account preferences in Mail.app and tell it to delete all the messages, they are not deleted. If I go to Get Account Info in Mail.app, I can see all the messages on the server. If I try to delete any of them, they're never deleted.
Now, to get more technical. I telnet into 110 on my server and user the user/pass commands to log into the POP server. Doing a "list" shows how many messages I have and how large they are.
Let's say the last one is 4133 (which it is). I do "dele 4133" to remove the message, then another "list". It shows the message is deleted. I quit out of the pop server, log back in and the same message is there.
Seeing all this, I know the messages aren't getting deleted.
Any ideas why? I have to disable my email until I get this resolved. I currently have 170,000 messages in my client's junk folder (fun times deleting those).

Yes, it was definitely within Cyrus. The Apple interfaces are pretty and all but they didn't even get close to helping me solve this easily.
Essentially, what I did was download all the emails from the server (to make sure I didn't miss anything), rename my email folder to something different to preserve the emails in case I really did miss something, then do a recover on the mailbox.
Being a UNIX-head, here's what I did on the server:
    cd /var/spool/imap/user
    mv scott scott.dead
    sudo /usr/bin/cyrus/bin/reconstruct -r user/scott
Sudo, of course, prompted me for the superuser password but everything was fixed right away after that. It is recommended to shut down the mail service from inside the Server Admin program first.

  • In yahoo mail, can I delete multiple messages at once?

For example, I'd like to try to clean up my mailbox.  On an MS OS, I can do a search on "sears", everything with that word is displayed.  I can then delete them all at once, usually with just one click.  Is there something similar on a MacBook Air?  Thanks!

    Hey,
    To delete them locally:
    *IMAP account [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Deleting_messages_in_IMAP_accounts]
To delete them on the server:
This will depend on your settings on the server.

  • Mail constantly checking thousands of messages

For the past several weeks each time I open mail and all throughout the day Mail says it is checking thousands of messages (see attached).
I've read about this happening to others in various other forums, but not a fix.  Any thoughts on why it is happening and how to stop it?

Anyone have any thoughts on this? It is still happening.

  • Mail constantly checks for new messages

Mail.app keeps looking for new messages even if I set it on manually or disable the update on the advanced settings of my accounts.
This results in a constant call on the servers and my IP being eventually blacklisted by my website hosting company…
Do you know where could the problem come and how to solve it?

If your hosting service happens to be "Hostgator," see below.

Mail is killing the processes on my server with IMAP
Mail processes shut down my website!! HELP!

  • MAIL: Trying to settle long-lasting problem. Mail always immediately downloads the messages I delete from any IMAP mailbox. I'm running out of HD space!

    BACKGROUND
I only have 60GB of space on my MacBook Air. Currently, three long-standing IMAP accounts are taking up over 7GB of it!
I have seen several related discussions about this kind of problem, but they all seem to have been solved or glossed over with setting up the IMAP interaction so that messages are deleted from the server in addition to the device or with a "Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For" fix that doesn't work for me. I like being able to save all of my email history on servers (I'm often surprised by how many years back I have to search to find a piece of information I need), but I can no longer stand losing so much of my very limited local space to really old mail.
    PROBLEM
I'll refer to just one of the relevant accounts as "Gmail," since that's in parentheses when seen in these screenshots. These are its current Mailbox Behaviors settings:
Under my Gmail Inbox in Mail, I have deleted every message from before 2013. The mail from 2013 is all that I want stored on my MacBook Air.
Ultimately, I think this has something to do with the Archive (seen in the sidebar above, as well). Even when I've deleted everything from before 2013 in my Inbox, AND emptied the entire contents of Trash manually, the Archive still contains all of the mail from the server (yes, this account was started in 2011, but I have others that go back much further).
The cherry on top is that when I delete the same messages from the Archive as I've deleted from the Inbox, Mail immediately begins re-downloading all of those messages. Last time I tried this my laptop had to download 23000 messages, but here's a screenshot of proof with a smaller sample:
In case my Gmail server settings are useful to consider, here they are:
    Final Notes
    • There's a lot that I don't know about exactly how IMAP communication occurs between a device and a server. For my sake and the sake of anyone else who needs this kind of help, please clarify terms like "flags" and "archive" (since Gmail and Mail both use the term and I don't know think they mean exactly the same thing) if/when you use them.
    • If anyone does think that there's some sort of "Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For" solution to this, you should know that no matter what I have selected in Mail's sidebar (at no matter what level of indentation), the options available under that menu item are always grayed-out.
    • I want to keep using Mail. There's a lot that I like about it and I don't want to switch to Thunderbird or something else (remember, I need to save as much local space as I can).
    • I just upgraded to 10.9.0 Mavericks, but this problem has existed for me and behaved essentially just like this as long as I can remember. In fact, I think I recall the problem still existing before there was an Archive in the sidebar at all.

    UPDATE
I still have the problem, but when I checked on this post to see if anyone had commented and I simply hadn't received an e-mail, I noticed that all but the last of the images I included have stopped displaying (I had friends check, too).  Most of them were just visual examples of what I was explaining in hopes of giving context and all available info that I may not have personally viewed as relevant, but the first one, about my account's Mailbox Behaviors settings sure is important. These are the settings I have:
    • Store draft messages on the server — Check
    • Store sent messages on the server — Check
    • Delete sent messages — One month old
    • Store junk messages on the server — Check
    • Delete junk messages — One week old
    • Move deleted messages to the Trash mailbox — Grayed-out and Check
    • Store deleted messages on the server — Grayed-out and Check
    • Permanently erase deleted messages when — Quitting Mail
I hope this helps. Please comment if I'm leaving out any other important information.

  • How can I trash and delete all messages at once in my Mail account?

I would like to be able to do the equivalent of a 'select all" and move all the messages in my Mail account into the trash, rather than having to move them one by one. Is it possible to do that?

Sorry, but it's not possible to select all in the mail app to delete all messages at once. One at a time is the way that you have to go.

  • Mail app not deleteing messages in trash like it's supposed to

I have a .mac email account. In "Mailbox Behaviors" I have checked "Move deleted messages to the Trash Mailbox" and "Store Deleted Messages on Server". I also have selected "Permenantly erase deleted messages when: one day old".
The problem is that mail is not deleting my messages when one day old. The messages just sit there in the trash forever.
Anyone else have this problem or have any ideas on how to solve?
    Thanks.
EDIT: The message was deleted when I quit mail and restarted. I don't understand. Usually I leave my mail app up and running 24/7. I thought that selecting "Permenantly erase deleted messages when: one day old" was supposed to do that even if the mail app was running all the time, when it syncronizes? But I have to quit mail and restart it to get it to do that?

    Hi, McToast.
I don't use .Mac mail, but I've noticed the same behavior w.r.t. "Delete messages when one day old." Personally, I think it's a bug. I just press Command-K every once in awhile in Mail to delete all the Trash: I have mail set up to move everything that is considered Junk to the Trash vs. a Junk mailbox.
I submitted a Mac OS X Feedback on this months ago. You may want to do the same.
You might want to check the Mail & Address Book Discussion, which is where Mail-related questions should be posted.
    Good luck!

  • Iphone deletes sent messages on my mac

Hi guys - I have searched on this subject but to no avail.
When I sync my iPhone with my mac, it deletes all my messages from my Sent Folder on both my Mac and .mac and only keeps the ones on my iPhone (approx 34 messages)
This means if I want to search for an old email that I have sent from my Mac - I cannot find it which could be disastrous!
Is there anyway that I can set it so it doesn't delete messages from my mac or do I just have to turn off syncing mail?

I am sure that your iPhone has absolutely nothing to do with this. Your iPhone and iTunes does not sync messages in Mail. All that is sync'd is simply the account information (name, type, password).
What is more likely happening, is that you have set Mail to not retain sent messages locally, and the server side with sent messages to be auto deleted once sent, or upon quitting Mail. Or you have set up IMAP like settings, in that a deletion on one client (either Mail or iPhone) deletes the message from the server
You only need to sync your Mail accounts one time, then you can turn it off. You would turn it back on, when you modify account settings in Mail, add a new account that you also want on your phone, and you simply don't want to double enter that information again on the iPhone.

  • Can you delete an E-mail account without deleting the associated E-mails

I was going to delete my Mindspring account from the mac mail, but it says that all the mail will also be deleted, or at least, that is how I interpet what is stated.   Soooo, is there a way delete my mindspring account without deleting the mail.  I am trying to take mindspring off as an option when sending E-mail
    Thanks

In Mail 4.6 (10.6) I'm not seeing only seeing Import Mailbox, no export. But Mail can be archived
Note: I'm not getting the Archive option with Cmd, but I do get it with a right-click.
    Archiving mailboxes
You can archive (create a backup copy) of a mailbox so you can retrieve messages if needed.
    To archive a mailbox:
Select one or more mailboxes to archive.
To select mailboxes that are next to each other (contiguous) in the list, hold down Shift as you click the first and last mailbox; to select mailboxes that are not next to each other in the list, hold down Command as you click each mailbox.
Choose Mailbox > Archive Mailbox, or choose Archive Mailbox from the Action pop-up menu (looks like a gear) at the bottom of the sidebar.
Choose a folder or create a new folder where you want to store the archives, and then click Choose.
Mail archives the mailboxes as .mbox packages. If you’ve already archived a mailbox, Mail does not overwrite the existing file but appends a number to the filename to create a new version of it.
If you need to recover messages, you can import an archived .mbox file as “Mail for Mac OS X.”
    Importing mailboxes
If you set up Time Machine to back up files, you can use it to restore previous versions of a mailbox or a message. Time Machine deletes older backups to make room for new ones as the backup disk fills up, so older backups of Mail might be deleted.

  • Can't delete the messages in Junk folder like before

    Hi,
I used to be able to right click on the Junk folder in Mail and select Delete Junk messages.
This option is no longer available. Delete  messages in Trash is still available but this is not what I want to do.
In the Tool bar under Messages, this option can be seen but can not be used as this menu option is not in a darker font colour.
Is there a solution to this? I'd like to regain the function that was previously available.

Check your Preference settings under Junk.  If you're set to perform Custom Actions, then this will happen.  I recently made that change and encountered the same.  Now if only Apple will fix whatever they've screwed up so that my junk filtering will become useful again...
