Mail consumers all memory, seems to run fine, but makes fan run constantly.

Recently, Inoticed that my fan runs a lot lately and used Activity Monitor to see what was going on and sure enough, Mail is using 99% of my CPU... I have always left my Mail on and left it to check for incoming messages, but until about a week ago, the fan started to run and the computer would get warm. Before doing the Activity Monitor, I started shutting things down one at a time and noticed that shutting Mail down would do the trick. I am curious: why is Mail now after months starting to make my computer run at such high temps? Is it a mail storage thing? A Newtwork thing? Any suggestions? I have taken a sample of the program and I can't make heads or tails of it... I just see it takes up everything thanks in advance.

Yes, I have been doing the same thing, but I want to know what has changed. I have looked at the activity monitor and see that my activity skyrockets and it says it's cooking at 99%+ activity, and the fan kicks in, and then when I quit it, the whole thing goes back to normal... it seems to be this one app and nothing else...

Question:  I bought a 5 yr old Mac G5 OSx 10.4.11, 2 GHz intel Core 2 Duo processor, 1GB 667 MHz DDR1 SDRAM memory.  It works fine but I can't get Thunderbird, Flash Player or Adobe reader to install -- it shows up on desktop as download but not App folder. Why?

The downloads are probably .dmg files (disk images).  You would open the disk image (double-click it) to find the application or an installer.  If it's the application itself, you then drag the application to your Applications folder to "install" it.  If it's an installer, double-click the installer to run the installer that installs the application.
NOTE:  If you iMac is Intel, it's not a PPC G5.

  • Time Machine Backup seems to run constantly

My Time Machine backup seems to run constantly.   When it happens, performance is also affected.   Although a system restart will seems to get everything back to normal, the problem comes back.    Any thoughts on what I am doing to cause the problem?

    Thanks Mike,
I'm a bit new to Macs really and thought that once backed up, on my NAS system I would be able to view the photos etc. but I presume this isn't the case and I should not back up the photos as part of the Time Machine backup and back these up seperately in order to view them remotely etc?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

  • PS downloaded via CC seemed to download fine but won't work. Won't even open a file/document.

I recently got a new computer and I have CC so I downloaded the CC app and downloaded LR and PS. LR runs/works fine. PS seemed to download ok but won't even open a new file:picture. I am very frustrated as I have spoken with CC tech support and they were of no help, in fact that didn't even have a clue how to navigate Windows 8! I have been working on this for a week and now very behind on my editing. Not sure who to call or what to do. Please help!! Thank you!!!

What does the crash report say about the name of the faulting module?
Yes, crashes like that are usually due to the video card driver. (though I was guessing from the original description that the image was just not drawing)
Have you tried disabling GPU drawing in Photoshop before opening a document?
Have you updated your video card driver from the GPU maker's website?

  • IMac works fine, but makes constant clicking noise.

My hard drive recently crashed so I replaced it with a new one. It starts up fine, but when I get to my desktop I hear this horrible clicking noise. It doesn't stop. The odd this is that everything works fine. What can I do?
Also, the computer does not recognize my password.
    Please help.

Horrible clicking sounds usually precede horrible hard disk failure. I recommend backing up your data to an external drive in priority order. Given that you've just replaced the drive his is very odd; was it a new drive or a re-conditioned one? Was it a reputable supplier?

  • Some functions, (delete, move, anything with a drop-down menu, etc), will not work in Yahoo Mail since upgrading to Firefox 7. I've switched back to Yahoo Mail Classic and that seems to work fine, so far.

I'm used to the new mail. It was a pain to find out how to switch to classic. On a side note, What is with the constant re-hauls/updates? It's getting tiresome, constantly encountering problems like this each time. I like Firefox and don't want to switch...........

  • Trying to upgrade my i-phone 3 operating system to ios-5.  The program seems to download fine, but at the end it says network run time error and then I have to cancel it out and try again.  Tried 5 times and I can't upgrade the system.  help?

I am trying to upgrade the operating system on my i-phone 3 to ios-5.  I download the program and it runs and downloads.  When almost finished, an error occurs that says Network run time error.  This cancels out the download.  I have tried 5 times with the sdame result.  Can anyone help?  Thanks

This is asked and answered frequently... a simple search of the forums would have revealed that disabling any Anti-Virus and Firewall software on the computer prior to downloading will rectify the issue.

  • After upgrading to Mountain Lion today, my battery only lasts less than 1:30 and the fans seem to run constantly. Help?

I have a late 2011 13" MBP with a 2.8 GHz i7 processor and 4GB of RAM. With OSX 10.7, my battery could last over 4:30; however, now I see the battery drop a percentage point about every minute (currently at 81% and it says 1:16 remaining). I have a number of programs open (Chrome, Mail, iTunes, Twitter, Skype), but these are the same programs I almost always had running with Lion and I never had this problem. Something else new is that the fan seems to constantly be running and only turns off if I put the computer to sleep.
Here are screenshots of my activity monitor: http://imgur.com/a/shehM
    Any advice?
My battery has decreased to 70% (1:07 remaining) by the time I've finished writing this...

It looks like Skype is basically running two CPU cores at nearly full throttle (well, 1.57 cores).  That's bound to drain the battery pretty quickly.  If you were not doing a high resolution video chat in Skype when you took that screen shot, then something is very wrong with it.  Check and see if there's a newer version of Skype available that fixes the problem.

  • MAC MAIL IS CAUSING MY MAC TO RUN CONSTANTLY

OK, I thought I would start a new thread on this problem I'm having because I think I have it narrowed down to Mac Mail being the culprit. I am noticing that every time I open mail, my Mac starts running it's guts out. The only way I can stop it is to close the mail app, and sometimes I have to Force it closed.
I went into the mail app and deleted everything I could, but then it would not open.
I then went into trash and put everything back, and it still wouldn't open. I then ran the application install disc and installed the apps and got Mail to open, but it's right back to hijacking my Mac like before and running non stop.
It starts in the hammering and will not stop until I close Mail. My problem is, I don't know what all belongs in the app and what doesn't. Is there a way I can completely wipe the app off, then reinstall it?
I would really appreciate it if I could get some advice on this mess. I am used to using Mac mail, and would like to continue using it for my Gmail account if I can get it working right.

I just saw something happening in my Mac Mail that is very strange. Down on the bottom left corner in my mail app in activities box, I saw the app in the process of downloading hundreds of old spam and junk messages from my Gmail account. It has just started doing this just since I installed Mavericks. How can I stop this process? I went into Gmail and deleted everything I could, but it's still happening when I open my Mac Mail.

  • I lost the sound for all apps. Music plays fine but apps do not have sound?

How do I recover the sound in the apps, music plays fine on the iPad, but apps now have no sound.

If you lose sounds for keyboard clicks, games or other apps, email notifications and other notifications, system sounds may have been muted.
System sounds can be muted and controlled two different ways. The screen lock rotation can be controlled in the same manner as well.
Settings>General>Use Side Switch to: Mute System sounds. If this option is selected, the switch on the side of the iPad above the volume rocker will mute system sounds.
If you choose Lock Screen Rotation, then the switch locks the screen. If the screen is locked, you will see a lock icon in the upper right corner next to the battery indicator gauge.
If you have the side switch set to lock screen rotation then the system sound control is in the task bar. Double tap the home button and in the task bar at the bottom, swipe all the way to the right. The speaker icon is all the way to the left. Tap on it and system sounds will return.
If you have the side switch set to mute system sounds, then the screen lock rotation can be accessed via the task bar in the same manner as described above.
This support article from Apple explains how the side switch works.

  • Brand new iPod Classic will not sync with iTunes.  All my older devices are fine, but as soon as this is connected, iTunes stops responding when it says it's "determining tracks to sync."

Also, the iMac I'm connecting it to is brand new as well - replacing a slightly older one.  My complete library got imported during setup and, like I mentioned, my older iPod classic synced fine, as did our iPhones.  Thoughts??

Is the Convert higher bit rate songs to 128 kbps AAC option ticked from under the iPod's Summary tab in iTunes?  If so disable this feature and then try resyncing the device.

  • I have a website, in IE all my wav files played fine, but in firefox they never do play. How do I fix?

I have wav files that play when certain pages come up, but they do not work and never have in firefox. For example, dogs bark when you open up their personal pages. Or on some puppy pages a song plays in the background.

Yes, I created my site using Microsoft Publisher. I realize this is probably considered archaic, but it's what I learned... I am very comfortable with it but of course it writes the code for me. Thank you for trying to help me, it's just I have no idea how to do any of what has been suggested. I don't know how to export W3C compliant code and don't know what that is. I don't know how to use an editor, do you mean notepad? I have used that, but only when I taught myself how to make a form and I did that by finding a sample on the internet, copy pasting into notepad and then reading through the code and figuring out just based on reading how to rewrite sections to suit my needs. I don't know what VML is either. So I'm afraid I may be a hopeless case. But maybe this is something I can do if there are directions. If I need to buy a different website program I have considered it but worry that my current site won't just copy and convert and I'd have to start from scratch. It was so much work, thinking about recreating it all makes me want to hide in my room! lol
Thanks again though, if you think there is hope for me, let me know!
