Mail Corrupts Files Sent Thru .Mac

My girlfriend uses .Mac as her mail service. She uses Apple Mail as her mail client, I use Google/Safari. I continually get files from her that wind up in the Google inbox as NONAME, with the file extension stripped off, and/or the resource fork separated from the file. In nearly all cases these files are unusable, although I sometimes can force NONAME files that came from Word to open with MacLink Plus. Others are so corrupt it's impossible to get them open.
I did some experimentation and found that files sent using the web-based .Mac mail via Safari do not have this problem. The exact same file from the same machine sent through .Mac using Mail has the problem described above. I know Google has issues with Mac files. What I don't understand is why a file sent thru the .Mac web interface is okay but files sent thru .Mac using the Mail client are not. Have tried "Windows-Friendly Attachments" on and off and it makes no difference in either case.
I've seen lots of other posts about similar issues but no solutions. Anyone have any ideas?

Some email servers corrupt PDF files because they use the wrong encoding for them. Try zipping them up before sending them.

  • Problem Reading pdf files sent thru e-mail

I saved some software output prints to pdf files (software has option for saving to pdf) and e-mailed to a co-worker.  I can see and print fine from my hard drive but recipient got only dots on the pages.  Should have been numbers and text.  I have Adobe 8.1.2.  Do you have any idea why this happened or what to do?  Thanks.

  • InDesign cannot export to pdf after corrupt file crash. Mac 10.6.8, CS5 7.0.4

Last Friday when opening an InDesign file that had become corrupt on the server, it crashed InDesign and since then hasn't been able to export to PDF. I've done a complete uninstall/reinstall of Creative Suite, ran Disk Utility on the MAC and still no luck. My next step is a complete wipe of the MAC and reinstall everything unless someone has another idea. Thanks, Ed

see Adobe Forums: InDesign crashes at startup for John's list of additional user files you can delete. If that doesn't work, try renaming the Adobe folders inthe bad account, then copy the ones from the admin account that works.

    Jerry,
Numbers cannot open a zip file.  drag the zip file to the downloads folder or the desktop or where ever you like.
Double click the zip file.  This should "unzip" the file (that is it will uncompress the file).
then, hopefully, there is a Numbers file in the resulting files.  double click the numbers file

Can you drag and drop the attachments visible in the email to the Desktop OK or does that fail ?
Re the sending: Are these recipients on Mac's or PC's as the file type could be an issue, if on Mac's then try setting the Mail Preferences Composing setting to Plain Text not Rich Text and see if that improves things.

The 'Winmail.dat' problem has been extensively covered in these forums, I would search for that (a Google search works well) and unfortunately I have not seen the pdf print problem before, but assuming the software is current and functions normally (other than the pdf print problem) I have no suggestion other than the obvious (but time consuming) re-installation of Office.

  • .Mac Mail sends old sent mail arbitrarily

For some reason when I look at my Sent mail folder it shows old mail sent today. In other words if I look at my send mail folder and all the mail Sent Date mail says Today there's 1 or 2 pieces of mail that also says Today but I orginally sent it in May. If you look at the header of the mail itself there is no sent date. I don't know if these are being resent or its just a bug in the app. and shows it in my mail folder.
    Any ideas??
    Thanks,
    Andrew

    You’re welcome.
It does certainly matter how the messages were sent because AFAIK .Mac webmail doesn’t set the Date header on the copy of messages sent that way that it puts in Sent. Neither Mail nor any other mail client can reliably determine the sent date of a message if that header is missing...
Messages sent with Mail have an X-Mailer header that says so when received. That header isn’t present in the copy of the message that Mail puts in Sent, but it can probably still be determined whether a message was sent with Mail or with webmail by looking at the full headers of the message (which you can see doing View > Message > Long Headers).
That said, it isn’t clear what your problem really is with the information you’ve provided. It could also be that you’re experiencing some index corruption and Mail is indeed resending some messages on its own. If you suspect that’s the case, you may proceed as follows.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, and ensuring that there’s enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
    1. Quit Mail if it’s running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong, e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down. This is where all your mail is locally stored.
    3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see any other “Envelope Index”-named file there, delete it as well.
    4. Move any “IMAP-”, “Mac-”, or “Exchange-” account folders to the Trash. Note that you can do this with IMAP-type accounts because they store mail on the server and Mail can easily re-create them. DON’T trash any “POP-” account folders, as that would cause all the mail stored there to be lost.
    5. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be “imported”. Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index — Mail says it’s “importing”, but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
    6. As a side effect of having removed the IMAP account folders, those accounts may be in an “offline” state now. Do Mailbox > Go Online to bring them back online.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Can not file sent mail...

Since upgrading to Snow Leopard I have not be able to file/move the mail form the sent folder?
    I get an error message:
XXX messages could not be moved to the mailbox "XXX - On My Mac"
An error occurred while moving messages to the mailbox "XXX - On My Mac".
    Any help appreciated.

this advice was catastrophic to me. My husband had a POP account with 1577 messages in it that I wanted to move to "on my mac". They wouldn't copy with the same error above. i chose Rebuild on the POP email and it erased 100% of his emails - received and sent. I'm just sick about this. before the catastrophic rebuild I could open these emails so I don't know why it deleted them.
they're not in the mail trash, they're not in the real trash, and they don't show up in the Library/Mail folder in any of the mboxes either. He "thinks" he has them backed up but I'm guessing he doesn't.
Please be very careful following this advice.

  • Export Mail inbox and sent mailbox to an Outlook 2003 compatible file

I need to export my Mail inbox and sent mailbox to a file or files that can be imported into MS Outlook 2003 on a PC.
I can find menu options for importing files (although no Outlook files) but don't see a menu entry for exporting mailboxes.
Anyone know how to get this done? I'm going to be a very unhappy camper if this can't be done!

Thunder?????????? Would that be shorthand for Thunderbird from Mozilla?
I just bought a new iMac, and although I've had brushes with Macs before (Systems 6, 9.x, and OS X Jaguar) this is my first serious attempt at using a Mac. Switching from Windows.
But I'm not new to personal computers, my first one was, and still is as I have it in storage, an Atari 800 if you are old enough to have heard of those.
In anticipation of using either Boot Camp or Parallels (I've settled on Parallels because I want "side-by-side operation), I did take the precaution of setting Mail up to leave copies of the emails on the server. So now I only have to deal with my Mail sent mailbox.

  • Corrupt File in MAIL?

I have OS 10.3.9, my server is Comcast.net. and I use MAIL as my primary address. Suddenly I am unable to SEND e-mails. I get message stating "not our customer". When I contacted Comcast they inform me that it appears I have a Corrupt File and should contact Apple for help. I am using Yahoo now.
Can anyone help? Never had problems before. Thank you.

Allan, Thank you for your response. Yes, Comcast is my internet provider, they set up my Mail address. I already had Yahoo which I am using now. I keep Mail Separate from Yahoo, meaning I do not retrieve from Yahoo into Mail, etc. When I access Mail I just click on the stamp icon and when I access Yahoo I open up Safari. I must tell you that something odd is happening because today when I opened Mail a couple of the messages that could not be sent previously were being sent as I was checking for new messages. I attempted to send another message to two of these same addresses and they were rejected "Not our Customer" and the other rejected one said "check address." I have to tell you that this has never happened to me before.
Hope this explains my problem clearer as I myself have not been thinking that clear...had 3 root canals!

  • Corrupted Mail preferences file

    Dear all,
My com.apple.mail.plist file got corrupted somehow. My Home/Library/Mail folder looks fine though. What do I have to do to restore everything back to normal? Bear that I don't have a preference file backup. I would <never> think a simple, tiny file could ruin all my e-mail capabilities... For one moment it reminded me of my Windows days...
Anyway, I'd appreciate your help in this matter.
    Cheers,
    Leonardo

The Mail.app preference file stores all account information and general Mail.app preferences.
With the Mail.app quit and using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Mail. Copy the Mail folder and place the copy on the Desktop for backup purposes.
Using the Finder, go to Home > Library > Preferences > com.apple.mail.plist. Delete the com.apple.mail.plist file and empty the Trash.
Note: Moving or deleting the com.apple.mail.plist from the Preferences folder will require re-entering all email account information when re-launching Mail.
The only exception to this is if you have a .Mac account which will be recreated automatically.
Launch Mail and decline any prompt to import mailboxes. After re-entering all email account information the same as before, the Mail.app should rediscover the existing account named folders and mailboxes at Home > Library > Mail.
After confirming all mailboxes were successfully rediscovered, you can delete the copy of the Mail folder from the Desktop.

How do I open a Numbers file sent to me that has been converted to Excel?  I already have MS office for Mac, but nothing comes up when I click on the imported file.

If it indeed has been converted from Numbers to Excel, it will have a .xlsx suffix at the end of the name. Do a Get Info on the file if the suffix doesn't show. Else, it may still be in Numbers format and be unreadable by Excel.
If it is in the right format, and you don't want to have to do what mende1 has instructed above for every successive file, click on the "Always open with..." option. That will associate the .xlsx suffix to Excel from thereon.
