Mail crashes following DSL installation

Hi there,
For the past few days, Mail has crashed a second after opening it, constantly. It started after I got my new DSL modem from Verizon. I'm thinking it's because the installation software tried to set up Mail for my Verizon email address (against my will, as it is). But I can't figure out how to uninstall or undo what it did. Verizon said they can't help me- in fact, they also said that the installation CD doesn't usually work on Macs at all. (So why did you send it to me?!?!)
Also, since the installation I've had problems with my screen going dim. I can correct it through color calibration but it just goes dim again after awhile.
I've already had them send me a new modem (the same model, a Westell 6100) and it didn't fix the problems.
If anyone can help me- and please, go easy, I'm not a computer whiz...
Thanks so much,
Amanda on the UWS

Do you have Cable TV and if so, does your Cable company offer internet service.? I know Cable modem internet access is more expensive than DSL but if available, I would call Verizon back and politely demand they provide you instructions for uninstalling the software that Verizon provided which they admit doesn't work with Macs anyway.
If you have a fall back with Cable modem internet access, ask to speak with someone in customer service and indicate Verizon will lose your business if someone at Verizon can't provide you instructions for removing the software they provided which isn't working and causing you additional problems.
Call Apple to fix a problem caused by the software Verizon provided?
Baloney.

  • Delimited reports crash following Patch3a installation

Delimited output causes crash following Patch3a installation
Ive recently installed patch3a with a view to getting my delimited output to load directly into Excel.
However following the installation of the patch Im now getting the following error 'The requested URL was not found, or cannot be served at this time. Oracle Reports Server CGI - The Reports Server Engine terminated abnormally.'
    Im using destype=file desformat=delimited delimiter=,
Other reports such as PDF's and HTML's seem to work Ok. Is this a known bug ? Please can someone help me.
    Thanks

Ive installed patch 5 and the reports server is now on version 6.0.8.14.2 however now none of my reports work.
The server does not seem to be able to find any of the entries in the cgicmd.dat file.
I really need some help to fix this as I cant get anything to run anymore.
    Thanks

  • Apple mail crashes after Mavericks update

My Apple mail crashes after Mavericks installation. There are also some other minor bugs that slow down the system but they are by and by adjusting, for example, the mouse took little time to ge tused to mavericks, but notw it is fine. Only issue is Apple mail.
    thanks

My initial enthusiasm about the account de- and reactivation actually waned quickly after I realized that I couldn't have all accounts active without crashing. Now I just discovered a new solution that seems to do the trick for me:
    *Delete Smart Mailboxes (e.g. "Today")
It seems Mail reindexes all the thousands of mails that you have in your folder and mail just breaks down if you have several bigger accounts.
After deleting smart mailboxes, Mail now works normal. So far...
Tip for those that haven't upgraded to Mavericks yet: delete the smart folders/mailboxes in Mail, and please report here whether you encountered issues or not.

  • Mail crashes after a re-installation of 10.9.4

I had some issues with my MacMini Server that I had taken into desktop use. I think it had originally 10.6 something + server. I had upgraded the os to 10.9.4 the normal route and decided to do a re-install 10.9.4 on a cleaned startup drive. I did a clean install and then used migration assistant to load apps and settings. Data is on an other drive & NAS.
After reinstall and restore, I did have some hickups with my old data drive, where the user directories are located. I had to run sudo chown to reclaim ownership of the user directories and get access to them.
All seems to pretty well except mail crashed initially every time I try to send a message. It just froze. Then I found a reference to deleting ~/library/containers/com.apple.mail, which I did. This resulted in Mail crashing at startup.

I do not know if these are of any use, but I would appreciate educated guesses on where to start for a solution.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

I turned to AppleCare because it was less than 90 days since I ugraded Mac OS X 10.3 -> 10.5. Final solution was to re-install Mac OS X 10.5 erasing the hard drive totally! That helped, but there is a lot of work trying to re-build my computer (programs and files) as it was before this issue.

Removing com.apple.mail.plist from the ~Library:Preferences folder and moving the Mail folder out of the ~Library folder didn't make a difference. I rebuilt the Permissions and ran Disk Utilities with no problems found. My Mail folder is quite large - 284.7 MB

There appears to be something wrong with Mail itself.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you're using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with your computer:
Mac OS X 10.3.9 Combo Update
You may also want to take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mail crashing after last update...

Started with (shift) key down, no luck. Went online to my .Mac account and Exchange account and checked for spam that may cause crash. Nothing there anywhere. I use this day in & out, never any issues until I accepted the updates yesterday.
    Here's the crash report:

Please, describe the circumstances under which Mail crashes. As a result of doing what does Mail crash?
Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of the problem already being there, or some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
And I wonder whether some of the things you have installed in /Library/InputManagers/ and in ~/Library/InputManagers/ (iPLM in particular) could also have a bearing on this...
Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall any updates that may not have been installed properly. If that’s really the problem (which I don’t know), it may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mail crashes on launch

On my macbook pro, mail crashes before it has fully started up. Same problem if another user tries to launch mail. Moving the mail folder from my library or moving com.apple.mail.plist from preferences doesn't help. A copy of mail.app taken from another computer exhibits the same behavior. Disk utility found nothing wrong with the disc. Top of last entry from the crash log below. Any help much appreciated!

It would have been better to post the entire backtrace of the thread that crashed (i.e. up to the next blank line), but there appears to be something amiss with either your Mac OS X installation or with Mail itself.
Not sure what did you verify/repair with Disk Utility. In case that’s not what you did, quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described in the following article. BTW, it doesn’t make a difference which disk you startup from to repair permissions; it’s only for repairing the disk itself (i.e. the filesystem) that you must startup from another disk:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:

If the problem persists, and you installed the latest Security Update, you may need to reinstall that as well:

  • Apple MAIL crashing

Has anyone started to experience crashes in Apple Mail?
I have happily been using InDeve Mail Tags for a few years
The application was updated, I installed and since then Mail crashes seemingly randomly while composing messages or replies
InDev support has been following with me.
The tech guy had me send some logs and noted that the crashes seem involved with JavaScript (not Java)
OF course I have no clue what might use JavaScript.
Wondering if my issue is idiocyncratic or if MAIL perhaps has changed and thus there is now conflicts with some software?
I am trying to check if I have any third party software needing updating which mIght impinge on MAIL.
    Suggestions welcome

    1. This is a comment on what you should—and should not—do to protect yourself from malicious software ("malware") that circulates on the Internet and gets onto a computer as an unintended consequence of the user's actions. It does not apply to software, such as keystroke loggers, that may be installed deliberately by an intruder who has hands-on access to the computer, or who has been able to log in to it remotely. That threat is in a different category, and there's no easy way to defend against it.
If you find this comment too long or too technical, read only sections 5, 6, and 10.
OS X now implements three layers of built-in protection specifically against malware, not counting runtime protections such as execute disable, sandboxing, system library randomization, and address space layout randomization that may also guard against other kinds of exploits.
    2. All versions of OS X since 10.6.7 have been able to detect known Mac malware in downloaded files, and to block insecure web plugins. This feature is transparent to the user. Internally Apple calls it "XProtect."
The malware recognition database used by XProtect is automatically updated; however, you shouldn't rely on it, because the attackers are always at least a day ahead of the defenders.
The following caveats apply to XProtect:
It can be bypassed by some third-party networking software, such as BitTorrent clients and Java applets.
It only applies to software downloaded from the network. Software installed from a CD or other media is not checked.
As new versions of OS X are released, it's not clear whether Apple will indefinitely continue to maintain the XProtect database of older versions such as 10.6. The security of obsolete system versions may eventually be degraded. Security updates to the code of obsolete systems will stop being released at some point, and that may leave them open to other kinds of attack besides malware.
       3. Starting with OS X 10.7.5, there has been a second layer of built-in malware protection, designated "Gatekeeper" by Apple. By default, applications and Installer packages downloaded from the network will only run if they're digitally signed by a developer with a certificate issued by Apple. Software certified in this way hasn't necessarily been tested by Apple, but you can be reasonably sure that it hasn't been modified by anyone other than the developer. His identity is known to Apple, so he could be held legally responsible if he distributed malware. That may not mean much if the developer lives in a country with a weak legal system (see below.)
Gatekeeper doesn't depend on a database of known malware. It has, however, the same limitations as XProtect, and in addition the following:
It can easily be disabled or overridden by the user.
A malware attacker could get control of a code-signing certificate under false pretenses, or could simply ignore the consequences of distributing codesigned malware.
An App Store developer could find a way to bypass Apple's oversight, or the oversight could fail due to human error.
Apple has so far failed to revoke the codesigning certificates of some known abusers, thereby diluting the value of Gatekeeper and the Developer ID program. These failures don't involve App Store products, however.
For the reasons given, App Store products, and—to a lesser extent—other applications recognized by Gatekeeper as signed, are safer than others, but they can't be considered absolutely safe. "Sandboxed" applications may prompt for access to private data, such as your contacts, or for access to the network. Think before granting that access. Sandbox security is based on user input. Never click through any request for authorization without thinking.
    4. Starting with OS X 10.8.3, a third layer of protection has been added: a "Malware Removal Tool" (MRT). MRT runs automatically in the background when you update the OS. It checks for, and removes, malware that may have evaded the other protections via a Java exploit (see below.) MRT also runs when you install or update the Apple-supplied Java runtime (but not the Oracle runtime.) Like XProtect, MRT is effective against known threats, but not against unknown ones. It notifies you if it finds malware, but otherwise there's no user interface to MRT.
    5. The built-in security features of OS X reduce the risk of malware attack, but they are not, and never will be, complete protection. Malware is a problem of human behavior, and a technological fix is not going to solve it. Trusting software to protect you will only make you more vulnerable.
The best defense is always going to be your own intelligence. With the possible exception of Java exploits, all known malware circulating on the Internet that affects a fully-updated installation of OS X 10.6 or later takes the form of so-called "Trojan horses," which can only have an effect if the victim is duped into running them. The threat therefore amounts to a battle of wits between you and the scam artists. If you're smarter than they think you are, you'll win. That means, in practice, that you always stay within a safe harbor of computing practices. How do you know when you're leaving the safe harbor? Below are some warning signs of danger.
    Software from an untrustworthy source
Software of any kind is distributed via BitTorrent. or Usenet, or on a website that also distributes pirated music or movies.
Software with a corporate brand, such as Adobe Flash Player, doesn't come directly from the developer’s website. Do not trust an alert from any website to update Flash, your browser, or anything else.
Rogue websites such as Softonic and CNET Download distribute free applications that have been packaged in a superfluous "installer."
The software is advertised by means of spam or intrusive web ads. Any ad, on any site, that includes a direct link to a download should be ignored.
Software that is plainly illegal or does something illegal
High-priced commercial software such as Photoshop is "cracked" or "free."
An application helps you to infringe copyright, for instance by circumventing the copy protection on commercial software, or saving streamed media for reuse without permission.
Conditional or unsolicited offers from strangers
A telephone caller or a web page tells you that you have a “virus” and offers to help you remove it. (Some reputable websites did legitimately warn visitors who were infected with the "DNSChanger" malware. That exception to this rule no longer applies.)
A web site offers free content such as video or music, but to use it you must install a “codec,” “plug-in,” "player," "downloader," "extractor," or “certificate” that comes from that same site, or an unknown one.
You win a prize in a contest you never entered.
Someone on a message board such as this one is eager to help you, but only if you download an application of his choosing.
A "FREE WI-FI !!!" network advertises itself in a public place such as an airport, but is not provided by the management.
Anything online that you would expect to pay for is "free."
    Unexpected events
You open what you think is a document and get an alert that it's "an application downloaded from the Internet." Click Cancel and delete the file. Even if you don't get the alert, you should still delete any file that isn't what you expected it to be.
An application does something you don't expect, such as asking for permission to access your contacts, your location, or the Internet for no obvious reason.
Software is attached to email that you didn't request, even if it comes (or seems to come) from someone you trust.
I don't say that leaving the safe harbor just once will necessarily result in disaster, but making a habit of it will weaken your defenses against malware attack. Any of the above scenarios should, at the very least, make you uncomfortable.
       6. Java on the Web (not to be confused with JavaScript, to which it's not related, despite the similarity of the names) is a weak point in the security of any system. Java is, among other things, a platform for running complex applications in a web page, on the client. That was always a bad idea, and Java's developers have proven themselves incapable of implementing it without also creating a portal for malware to enter. Past Java exploits are the closest thing there has ever been to a Windows-style virus affecting OS X. Merely loading a page with malicious Java content could be harmful.
Fortunately, client-side Java on the Web is obsolete and mostly extinct. Only a few outmoded sites still use it. Try to hasten the process of extinction by avoiding those sites, if you have a choice. Forget about playing games or other non-essential uses of Java.
Java is not included in OS X 10.7 and later. Discrete Java installers are distributed by Apple and by Oracle (the developer of Java.) Don't use either one unless you need it. Most people don't. If Java is installed, disable it—not JavaScript—in your browsers.
Regardless of version, experience has shown that Java on the Web can't be trusted. If you must use a Java applet for a task on a specific site, enable Java only for that site in Safari. Never enable Java for a public website that carries third-party advertising. Use it only on well-known, login-protected, secure websites without ads. In Safari 6 or later, you'll see a lock icon in the address bar with the abbreviation "https" when visiting a secure site.
Stay within the safe harbor, and you’ll be as safe from malware as you can practically be. The rest of this comment concerns what you should not do to protect yourself.
    7. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" (AV) or "Internet security" products for the Mac, as they are all worse than useless. If you need to be able to detect Windows malware in your files, use one of the free security apps in the Mac App Store—nothing else.
Why shouldn't you use commercial AV products?
To recognize malware, the software depends on a database of known threats, which is always at least a day out of date. This technique is a proven failure, as a major AV software vendor has admitted. Most attacks are "zero-day"—that is, previously unknown. Recognition-based AV does not defend against such attacks, and the enterprise IT industry is coming to the realization that traditional AV software is worthless.
Its design is predicated on the nonexistent threat that malware may be injected at any time, anywhere in the file system. Malware is downloaded from the network; it doesn't materialize from nowhere. In order to meet that nonexistent threat, commercial AV software modifies or duplicates low-level functions of the operating system, which is a waste of resources and a common cause of instability, bugs, and poor performance.
By modifying the operating system, the software may also create weaknesses that could be exploited by malware attackers.
Most importantly, a false sense of security is dangerous.
    8. An AV product from the App Store, such as "ClamXav," has the same drawback as the commercial suites of being always out of date, but it does not inject low-level code into the operating system. That doesn't mean it's entirely harmless. It may report email messages that have "phishing" links in the body, or Windows malware in attachments, as infected files, and offer to delete or move them. Doing so will corrupt the Mail database. The messages should be deleted from within the Mail application.
An AV app is not needed, and cannot be relied upon, for protection against OS X malware. It's useful, if at all, only for detecting Windows malware, and even for that use it's not really effective, because new Windows malware is emerging much faster than OS X malware.
Windows malware can't harm you directly (unless, of course, you use Windows.) Just don't pass it on to anyone else. A malicious attachment in email is usually easy to recognize by the name alone. An actual example:
London Terror Moovie.avi [124 spaces] Checked By Norton Antivirus.exe
You don't need software to tell you that's a Windows trojan. Software may be able to tell you which trojan it is, but who cares? In practice, there's no reason to use recognition software unless an institutional policy requires it. Windows malware is so widespread that you should assume it's in every email attachment until proven otherwise. Nevertheless, ClamXav or a similar product from the App Store may serve a purpose if it satisfies an ill-informed network administrator who says you must run some kind of AV application. It's free and it won't handicap the system.
The ClamXav developer won't try to "upsell" you to a paid version of the product. Other developers may do that. Don't be upsold. For one thing, you should not pay to protect Windows users from the consequences of their choice of computing platform. For another, a paid upgrade from a free app will probably have all the disadvantages mentioned in section 7.
    9. It seems to be a common belief that the built-in Application Firewall acts as a barrier to infection, or prevents malware from functioning. It does neither. It blocks inbound connections to certain network services you're running, such as file sharing. It's disabled by default and you should leave it that way if you're behind a router on a private home or office network. Activate it only when you're on an untrusted network, for instance a public Wi-Fi hotspot, where you don't want to provide services. Disable any services you don't use in the Sharing preference pane. All are disabled by default.
    10. As a Mac user you don't have to live in fear that your computer may be infected every time you install software, read email, or visit a web page. But neither should you assume that you will always be safe from exploitation, no matter what you do. The greatest harm done by security software is precisely its selling point: it makes people feel safe. They may then feel safe enough to take risks from which the software doesn't protect them. Nothing can lessen the need for safe computing practices.

  • Strange "fix" for Mail-crashes?

Hiya. I had the same problems as many others have with Mail crashing soon after hitting the 'get msgs.' button. I tried numerous times and finally came to this discussion group and tried the suggestions offered to no avail. I gave up and DL'd Mozilla's mail-app. After installation and setting, I hit the 'get mail' button and got more than a thousand messages! All of the letters were from the day I set up this Mac a few months ago to the day I crashed. I deleted everything which took a LONG time cuz I had received a lot of music from my brother and that involved quite a few mbs. After the deletions, all was okay for correspondence. That was yesterday and this morning before opening Mozilla, I opened Mail to see if there was any change and to my surprise it worked okay just like before the crashes! I can only assume that somewhere on the Mac or my server those 1000+ letters were never completely deleted and clogged up Mail to cause the crashes. I gave it an enema??? Hope this "fix" helps someone out there. Regards, jym

So Alex. What is the fix??
    SydChesson
I followed what was suggested on:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1328036&tstart=0
    i.e.
**+Along with a standard Repair from Server Admin, this command did it:+**
    **+/etc/postfix/post-install upgrade-configuration+**
**+It looks like the OS X upgrade missed a config in postfix that broke imap. I'm not sure how closely this relates to your issue, but hopefully it helps someone. It worked for me.+**
That almost fixed it. Thanks to EEFranklin.
I found that I also had to do a:
    sudo postfix reload
Then it all came back happy again.
    Cheers,

  • Mail crashed after update to 4.8

    hello,
after updating a 1GHz 17" flat panel iMac from 4.4 to 4.8, OSX Mail crashes immediately at startup. the log says: 'Library not found'. i have a feeling this might have to do with the fact that my system is the Dutch version? anybody any ideas? i tried deleting the plist for Mail, and it seems option-apple-p-r doesn't work!
    any help appreciated.
    robert

    Hello Robert.
Verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you're using:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for PPC
Mac OS X 10.4.8 Combo Update for Intel
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mail crashing, mail.crash.log here

Hi, been having a ton of aggro on the Mail front(Safari too), Mail crashes upon launch, reply, and slow to load if at all. I have corrected permissions, restarted, and trashed as many unneeded emails from my In-Box.
    Can anyone make another suggestion?

Hey, you've lasted more than 24 hours! I was starting to believe this was indeed a fonts issue...
Start by verifying/repairing your disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, reinstall the latest system update using the Combo installer, as well as any Security Updates you had installed afterwards:
Mac OS X 10.4.6 Combo Update for PPC
Security Update 2006-003 Mac OS X 10.4.6 Client (PPC)
Read the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the boot volume before installing the update, and no applications should be running while installing it.
Another thing to look at would be third-party utilities that modify or "enhance" the system. Do you have any of these? Go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items. What do you see there?

  • Address Book & Mail crash after Security Update 2006 002 1.1

    hello,
I recently installed Security Update 2006 002 v1.1 on my iBook G4 and since then Address Book has crashed on launch (also when launching from the Dashboard and from within Mail), and Mail now crashes when pasting text into a new message. I tried repairing permissions with Disk Utility and checking the locations of the apps. So far, nothing's helped.
I've read similar problems on the discussions but haven't found any solutions. If I've missed something, please pass me a link - if not, any ideas?
    thank you
    scott

    Scott:
The best way to preserve your data, preferences and settings it to do an Archive and Install. When you use that method the installer places your User Folder with the data etc. in a Previous Systems Folder and you retrieve them following the installation. Of course, before any major operation like that it is wise to backup those things, anyway, just in case something goes wrong.
Here are some suggestions on installation:
Tiger: Archive and Install (with a Clean Install Option)
If you have the Full Retail Version of Tiger (computer specific disks for your computer) here is what you do.
    1. Warning: Although we will use Archive and Install there is always a risk something can go wrong. As a precaution back up your User Folder and any third party applications you can't afford to lose.
    2. Check to see if you have the latest Firmware Update. Note: You must be in OS 9 to update firmware
    3. Boot from the install disk holding down the C key.
    4. Once booted go to the Utilities Menu and open Disk Utility.
To do a clean install see Notes below
    5. Run Repair Disk. If there are problems, run it until no problems are reported. If it reports that it can't repair the problems you might need TechTool Pro or Disk Warrior.
    6. While still in Disk Utility run Repair Permissions.
    7. Quit Disk Utility and open the Installer.
    8. Choose the option to Archive and Install. This saves your data in a Previous Systems folder, which you can retrieve after installation.
    9. You might want to Customize and deselect Foreign Language Translations and Additional Printer Drivers to save Hard Drive space.
    10. Proceed with installation.
    11. After installation is complete computer will restart. Follow prompts and set up computer.
    12. Open Disk Utility (Applications > Utilities > Disk Utility) and Repair Permissions.
    13. Go online and download updates, or go to Software Update under the Apple Menu and update your OS.
    14. Transfer your User Folder from Previous Systems folder.
    NOTE (below):
    To do a clean install:
Follow steps 1 through 4 above.
    a. In Disk Utility select your HD in left panel and Erase in main panel.
    b. Be sure Volume Format is Mac OS Extended and the checkbox Mac OS 9 Drivers Installed is checked.
    c. Select Options at bottom left in Erase panel. WARNING! This procedure will erase the contents of your entire HDD. Be sure you back up anything you cannot afford to lose!
Select option to zero all data. Click OK. Click Erase.
This process will take a while, so this is a good time to take a long walk or call your mother
    d. After HDD is erased resume at No. 7 above.
Post back with any questions or comments.
    Good luck.
