Mail crashes & settings don't take

I just upgraded from 1.1.3 to 2.0.
I did the restore from backup then upgrade. All seemed to go well, except when I try tto use the mail app it starts to open then closes. In the mail settings if I try to make any changes like deactivate an account or even delete one, it doesn't take.
I've tried to reset, but made no difference.
Any suggestions? Thanks!

Well, I backed up as 2.0, and then did another restore, and still same problem. Crashed to home after a second, settings seem read-only.
I see in another thread the same problem (didn't see that thread before I posted mine).

Seems the only thing that's working for some people is a restore as new phone!
Man, I have like 100 contacts, many YouTube bookmarks, a ton of calendar items...the thought of starting over from scratch makes me ill.
I really hope there's a better option!

  • Mail account settings don't stick

My verizon POP account settings don't stay put (peak time for download, mail size, warn on delete, delete mail on server). I set them the way I want, but when I go back a day later they have reset to where they were before.
Worst offender is probably the delete from server. I've lost several key messages without warning.
Is ther a way to make them stay put?

Thanks for posting.  It sounds like the settings you are entering are not the correct ones that should be set for your mobile settings.  When did this start happening with your email settings?  As far as deleing messages from the server – that can be managed from outlook.  Do you use outlook?  If so, what version?  Please repost so I can help you get this issue resolved.  Thank you.

  • Settings Don't Take

I am having much strife with my AEBSn. I have a Gateway laptop with a Linksys Wireless-G Notebook Adapter. No matter how I configure the AEBSn, my card won't pick up the network. I think the problem stems from the fact that when I do change the setup, not all of it seems to take. I can turn on/off and change security settings, but when I try to change the channel or the mode (b, b/g, g) nothing happens. Under the Wirelss tab in the AirPort Utility, the Radio Mode is always "802.11b Only" and the channel is always "1" (channel is always "1" under summary tab as well). Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

  • Using Firefox on a iMac OS-X; the settings used through Google labs in gmail, composing mail font settings don't work.

I'm using 'DEFAULT TEXT STYLING" in Google LABS. Any setting you make here are not available in composing email.

I found the answer on another thread. So far it works, but it remains to be seen

    1) Quit Mail.app.
    2) Log into Gmail in your favorite web browser.
    3) Click on the gear menu and select "Settings".
    4) Click on the "Labels" tab.
    5) Under "System Labels", next to "Drafts", click on "show if unread" and uncheck the "Show in IMAP' box.
Now disable "Store draft messages on the server":
    6) Launch Mail.app.
    7) Select Mail > Preferences...
    8) Click on the "Accounts" button in the toolbar.
    9) Click once on the account name and then click the "Mailbox Behaviors" tab.
    10) Uncheck the "Store draft messages on the server" box.
    11) Close the window and opt to save your changes when prompted.

  • 10.5.1 Mail crashes OS (black screen) then wipes Mail settings + mailboxes

So I dragged a PDF to the mail icon to start a new message, Mail creates new message body with PDF but then crashes the entire OS - press the on/off to reboot your system.
Then when the OS comes up again the entire Mail settings are wiped.
Okay so I do a restore from the archived Mail.
    Spaghetti Mail results.
I've now got two sets of archived Mail (this is a new MacBook so I recently imported old Mails from the iBook) nested inside multiple folders... one set of the original iBook to MacBook import - and now a set of the MacBook mail with a set of the iBook to MacBook import inside it.
Problems I have with this: -
    1. Mail crashed my MacBook in the first place
    2. Mail forgot the mail settings even though the mailboxes are still in ~/me/library/mail
    3. Mail double imported archived mail
    4. Mail has no clear and easy way to merge old mail back into a new mail setup.
Now I'm going to resync from the IMAP mail servers to get my INBOXes back... so multiple multiple nests of spaghetti.
    This is pretty unacceptable behaviour.
    Solution: -
    1. Mail should have a back up set of settings to "Clone" settings and mailboxes from an archive
    2. Mail should be smart enough to know that the mailboxes in the users library/mail folder are not alien entities but the data it needs to work.
    3. Mail should have a way to merge archives into the current set of live mail boxes - SENT especially important.
Now I'll be resyncing then dragging and dropping to try to get it to some normality.
Yes perhaps Time Machine is the answer - but that does not resolve the cloning of settings issue... nor help when moving from 10.4
    Awful

Okay - so I've begun restoring the email accounts - I have 5 of them... and it seems to be recognising them and importing the mail from the existing set of mailboxes I'd imported already.
However there is still the issue of Mail recognising that those Mailboxes exist. It should know that they are there and offer to set up the accounts using these mail boxes as a basis.
Not very smart to do it the way it has been done - now I need to delete the archives I've just imported... but that scares me so perhaps I'll just live with them as they are...
Not very impressed with the recovery process.

I doubt you are doing anything wrong. First day glitches
    Reset the device.
Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button and the Home button down at the same time for at least ten seconds, until the Apple logo appears.

  • Mail Crashes before I can do anything with settings

Mail crashed while I was reviewing an incoming communication. And composing. Now, when mail opens, it gets stuck on the same 2 pieces of mail and then crashes.
I attempted to reinstall Mail from the system disks to my external harddrive as I thought I would try doing a custom install. It didn't really work and I had a scare that my external was hooped. It is OK. Both Mail on my hard drive and my external harddrive now have the same problem - the same mail.
    1) Can I fix mail without reinstalling ?
    2) Can I keep it open long enough to go into the preferences ?
    3) Can I do a custom install without affecting my harddrive ?
    4) Any idea why this happened in the first place?
Thanks!! I am surviving with my laptop at the moment.

    Valerie,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
Hold down the Shift Key, while you click on the Mail icon in the Dock. This prevents Mail from opening any mailbox, will allow you to choose another, until you minimize the Message Preview Pane, and delete the two pieces of Mail, or park them into another mailbox, for laer attempts to salvage.
Keep us posted with your progress.

  • Mail crashing when sending via Gmail

I've been sending and receiving through my Gmail account just fine for months now. However, over the last two days or so, Mail will get stuck in a crash loop if I attempt to send a message through Gmail - but not any of my other accounts. Mail behaves fine if I send through .Mac or any of my personal hosting email accounts.
When trying to send through Gmail, Mail will crash while appearing as though it is still trying to send the message. The kicker is that, often times, the message actually gets sent out; this has resulted in duplicates being sent to friends and a couple email lists I'm on.
Upon starting Mail back up, it attempts to send the message again - which causes another crash. The only way I've been able to stop this is to use the keyboard shortcut to quickly bring up the activity panel and cancel the sending operation before the crash occurs.
I have removed all plugins I use (MailTags and Mail Act-On) in a troubleshooting effort to find out if they were causing the problem. Nothing changed; Mail keeps crashing when sending through Gmail.
    Any thoughts are much appreciated.

Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
When an application crashes (i.e. quits unexpectedly), the system writes information about the state of the application at the moment of the crash into a log file. That information is called a crash report and it makes troubleshooting much easier. In order to find and paste the relevant part of the crash report here, proceed as follows:
    1. Open ~/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/Mail.crash.log. The whole Mail crash log appears on a Console window (you can also open that file with any text editor). It may contain many crash reports. We only want the latest, which is located at the bottom of the file.
    2. Look for a line that begins with "Date/Time:" as close to the bottom as possible, and another that says "Thread N Crashed:", where N is a number. Select everything from the "Date/Time:" line to the lines immediately following "Thread N Crashed:". Copy that text and paste it here. Do not post the whole crash log, and do not include anything beyond the lines immediately following "Thread N Crashed:" either, just the relevant part.
Take a look at the following thread for examples of what a crash report looks like:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=466701
In the meantime, you may try re-creating the preferences file, in case there is something wrong with it (the account settings are stored in this file):
    1. Quit Mail.
    2. Make a backup copy of the ~/Library/Mail folder, just in case something goes wrong. You can do this in the Finder by dragging the folder to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down, for example. This is where all your mail is stored.
    3. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Preferences/. Locate the com.apple.mail.plist file and move it to the Desktop (to be deleted if this fixes the problem).
You'll have to set up your non-Mac accounts from scratch all over again. If given the option to import existing mailboxes or something like that, don't. Just enter the account information and Mail will automagically rediscover the data in ~/Library/Mail/ when done.
You'll also have to re-configure most of your settings in Mail > Preferences. For spam-related security reasons, the first thing you should do is go to Preferences > Viewing and disable Display remote images in HTML messages if it's enabled.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • Mail crashed, inboxes & contents gone. How do I restore fr backup drive?

Mail crashed late last night. When it re-opened, it said:
"New settings have been created for this application." And it asked me whether I wanted to use the new ones or the old ones.
It did not explain what that meant - are the "new settings" my personal settings, as opposed to factory default settings, or are the "new settings" ones created by Mail right then, right after the crash?
I couldn't find an answer on the forums, so I just chose one, and I chose wrongly, because now my setup is GONE. My inboxes, outboxes, draft boxes, and their contents - wiped out.
Now, I'm pretty sure there is a way to restore what I have on my backup drive --luckily I backed up Saturday -- and then download messages since Saturday again from the related remote servers.
    But I don't know how.
And I have been trolling this forum for hours trying to figure out how.
There's some trick with the library, isn't there, so that the old messages will be able to be viewed in the Mail window, instead of bundled in one big file?
I know I could re-set up new mailboxes with the settings from the ISP, but that would only net me the mail that's on those current servers, which is a drop in the bucket, and anyway I can send and receive current emails via the web interfaces. The key is to get back all the old emails too!
    Help!

    I don't understand all that. I speak only grade school level computer-ese. : )
No problem, we'll try to "connect" here on whatever level is needed!
Is there somewhere else they would be?
That's why the EasyFind and searching for .emlx might help us.
then won't it start repairing permissions on my HD, for everything, in general?
No actually, just System related files and Applications... more insurance than anything else.
Or do you think the mailboxes and the emails are somewhere, but just not in the library?
After we prepare, insure, and search as above, we can work on that part.
Also, what does it do to move the Mail cache and the envelope index to the desktop and then reboot? Aren't those going to be essentially empty?
They may be empty, or they may be corrupt, just making them essentially useless or appear empty, we don't know yet, but upon reboot & starting Mail again, it'll make new fresh copies... which may also be empty, but should take corruption out of the picture.
Sorry to probe -- I'm quite skittish about just wading in and trying things, since, obviously, one click of the wrong button can obliterate tons of data and lead to hours of frustration. : )
Don't be soory at all, the more questions you ask the better.
If worried about losing anything that may be there now...
First Quit Mail, then I'd backup these two Mail folders, by right clicking on them in the Finder, then choose Archive/Compress.
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail
    Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail Downloads
(Could be a different folder here if you chose such in Mail Prefs)
Right click on that Mail folder, choose archive, you'll get everything in the folder, and the folder itself in a file called Mail.zip, move it to a safe place, same for the Mail Downloads folder... only the plist is separate.
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.mail.plist
One queston, is there any entries in System Preferences>.Mac, even for a trial account?

  • Mail crashes after a re-installation of 10.9.4

I had some issues with my MacMini Server that I had taken into desktop use. I think it had originally 10.6 something + server. I had upgraded the os to 10.9.4 the normal route and decided to do a re-install 10.9.4 on a cleaned startup drive. I did a clean install and then used migration assistant to load apps and settings. Data is on an other drive & NAS.
After reinstall and restore, I did have some hickups with my old data drive, where the user directories are located. I had to run sudo chown to reclaim ownership of the user directories and get access to them.
All seems to pretty well except mail crashed initially every time I try to send a message. It just froze. Then I found a reference to deleting ~/library/containers/com.apple.mail, which I did. This resulted in Mail crashing at startup.

I do not know if these are of any use, but I would appreciate educated guesses on where to start for a solution.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
For this step, the title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
In the top right corner of the Console window, there's a search box labeled Filter. Initially the words "String Matching" are shown in that box. Enter the name of the crashed application or process. For example, if iTunes crashed, you would enter "iTunes" (without the quotes.)
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Select the messages from the time of the last crash, if any. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
☞ The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
☞ Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
    In the Console window, select
DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION ▹ User Diagnostic Reports
(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of crash reports. The name of each report starts with the name of the process, and ends with ".crash". Select the most recent report related to the process in question. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.
I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.
If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a crash, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.
In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)
Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report—they're very long and rarely helpful.

  • Mail crashing after last update...

Started with (shift) key down, no luck. Went online to my .Mac account and Exchange account and checked for spam that may cause crash. Nothing there anywhere. I use this day in & out, never any issues until I accepted the updates yesterday.
    Here's the crash report:

Please, describe the circumstances under which Mail crashes. As a result of doing what does Mail crash?
Problems arising right after installing a system update are usually the result of the problem already being there, or some filesystem corruption that should have been fixed first, or not having installed the update properly (e.g. applications running while installing it), or having ignored Apple’s “Important: Please read before installing” warnings, etc.
And I wonder whether some of the things you have installed in /Library/InputManagers/ and in ~/Library/InputManagers/ (iPLM in particular) could also have a bearing on this...
Quit all the applications and verify/repair the startup disk (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all the filesystem issues, if any, reinstall any updates that may not have been installed properly. If that’s really the problem (which I don’t know), it may also be necessary to reinstall the Combo Update for the type of computer and the version of Mac OS X you’re using, unless this is the version of Mac OS X that came with the computer:
About the Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for PowerPC
Mac OS X 10.4.10 Combo Update for Intel
After installing the Combo Update, the computer may restart twice and the first restart may take several minutes. This is normal.
Take a look at the following articles for guidelines on how to properly install system updates:
    Troubleshooting installation and software updates
    Installing software updates
Basically, you should verify/repair the startup disk and back up before installing the update, no applications should be running while installing it, and you may experience unexpected results if you have third-party system software modifications (not normal applications) installed.

  • Mail crashes repeatedly

    Mac OSX 10.6.8, Mail 4.5
Mail crashes repeatedly when connected (works OK offline). I've tried reinstalling operating system as per other posts, to no joy. Any clues? Other symptoms are that it kepe giving me an unread mail count for each mailbox even though the settings say not to. I've also tried rebuilding mailboxes.

Out of curiousity, do you have any idea what HTML element it is? If you have webmail access to the same account, you could delete it through that interface. If you don't have webmail for that account, you could try collapsing the preview pane and deleting it in Mail.

  • Mail Crashes on viewing HTML email

    Hi,
I've been having trouble with Mail crashing when I click on an email that is formated as HTML or RTF. Not all of them will crash Mail just certain emails. I have notices that emails that come Microsoft Outlook on windows tend to crash Mail readily.
This pretty much started with the last software update. Here is what I done to trouble shoot this to no avail:
    1) repair disk and permissions.
    2) re-install combo updater while booted from external firewire drive.
    3) create new user in OS. login as new user and test Mail with email that crashes Mail. This time Mail does not crash it renders the email correctly.
    4) Login as user account with issue. go to Library and remove all folders and files from Mail, Mail Downlaods, Caches/Mail, and the com.apple.mail.plist from Preferences. restart Mail, added email account, clicked on email, It still crashed.
    5) Not sure if related but Safari is also crashing on certain web pages. maybe these are related.
    Any suggestion would be great
    Sincerely,
    Mike

Mac Mini   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

    Hi Mike.
It looks like this could be a font issue. Since the problem isn't system-wide, if it's really a font issue, it can only be that either an essential font has been disabled, or a font cache has become corrupt. If the former, the following article would be relevant:
Font Management in Mac OS X Tiger and Panther
If the latter, take a look at the following article for general troubleshooting and cache cleaning procedures:
Resolving Disk, Permission, and Cache Corruption
Be sure to read this in particular:
Side effects of System cache cleaning
In addition to the utilities mentioned there, you may also consider OnyX or Cache Out X, which are free, although for this particular problem, Font Finagler is probably the most appropriate.

  • Mail crashes regularly since 10.5.4 upgrade

Mail crashes a few times a day since I upgraded to 10.5.4. I've rebooted and repaired permissions since then, but the situation hasn't improved.
Does anyone else have this problem? Any suggestions?
    Thanks!

My MacOS X 10.5.4 update went fine, and the only anomaly I've noticed since the update is that I have to wake my MacBook Air up twice to get it to successfully reconnect to the network. I have recently changed my AirPort Express settings to use only the 5GHz/wide channels, which may be responsible, but other than that, all is normal.
Three simple things I can suggest, and why to try them:
    1. Your mailbox may be damaged. Select the Inbox/Mailbox you use, go to the Mailbox Menu at the top of the screen, select Rebuild. This will read all your mail for that account and rebuild its database.
    2. You may have a damaged cache. Your Mac builds temporary files (caches) to speed up its operation (so it doesn't have to search the hard drive for key files it uses over and over for specific functions). If you delete them, the Mac operating system will rebuild them the next time it needs to perform that function. This will slow down the operation the next time you perform that operation, but all will return to normal once the cache is rebuilt. To delete specific caches, go to ~/Library/Caches and select one to delete, or simply simply create a temporary folder on your Desktop and move the contents of the above Caches folder to it. Once you're sure everything is OK, toss this temporary folder into the Trash and delete it. Repeat, this will NOT damage your Mac, but it will slow down operations until the individual caches are rebuilt by the System. (The ~ in the path above means the Library under your user account, not the one at the root of the system.)
    3. You may have a missing/damaged system file. If you have been performing incremental updates using Software Update and a power spike occurred during an update, a file may not have been updated properly. The easiest way to resolve this is to download the combo updater (it contains all of the updates to Leopard in once huge file). When you run the Combo update it will match the installed files against the expected files, and replace the missing ones. I personally always use combo updaters for system updates, and if I ever have to reinstall the operating system, I have one file to run to bring the system up to date. The combo updater is available at:
    http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/macosx_updates/macosx1054comboupdate .html
Finally, if none of the above works, you can always rerun the original Leopard disc, select Archive & Install (this will move your current system files to a Previous Systems folder), and let it rebuild the operating system with completely new files. Then, when that's done, run the combo updater to bring the system back to the latest version. This will work fine for all MacOS stuff, and most commercial third party applications, but some (e.g., Adobe Creative Suite) may require you rerun their installers the first time you attempt to use them after the system replacement.
    Good luck.
