Mail creates dozens of duplicates, unable to delete

It started with dead email addresses - I'd get a "Mailer-Daemon" message saying I had sent email to a dead address. These returned emails come up as blank (until I hit fwd) and will not delete. Now, I get dozens of duplicate emails in my Inbox and they, aswell, cannot be deleted. If I try to send them to trash they go away but then come back as soon as I leave that particular box.
I've deleted and recreated my account, tried rebuilding my Inbox and this has only made it worse.
I don't think this is a simple preferences issue - I'm pretty computer-literate and I've tried all the standard troubleshooting tasks I can think of. Is this s virus? (MS Word docs sent to PC users cannot open because the PC protection says it has a virus - which I assume is bull.)
Thanks very much for your time.

You’re welcome.
Reinstalling Mail or the whole system would accomplish exactly nothing and may introduce new issues if not done properly. It is a sad fact of life that Mail sometimes chokes on that kind of messages — I assume because they’re malformed.
removing the mail folders and starting from zero does nothing
What do you mean? Setting up Mail again from scratch should certainly fix the problem IF the offending messages have been removed from the server, which I said should be done first...
Anyway, if you keep receiving messages that Mail chokes on and having to deal with these issues is not an option, then you’ll have to seriously consider using another mail client, such as Thunderbird...

  • I have deleted accounts via preferences Mail,Contacts etc however mailboxes still show in mail app and i am unable to delete them (Delete mailbox is greyed out)!

    Hi,
Ive constantly had problems with mail app since upgrading to mountaion lion. 8/10 time i have to force quit mail but thats not the main problem. I have been trying to delete all my mailboxes however the "Delete Mailbox" option is always greyed out therefore I went to system preferences>Mail,Contacts..., then selected the accounts and clicked " - " and deleted the accounts successfully.
Weird thing is that the mailboxes still show in mail app. I have no accounts showing in preferences as i have deleted everything but when i open mail app, everything is still there.
Anyone have an idea, what is going here? Wish it could be like windows, just uninstall and install the app again -_-
    Thanks in advance!

I found this link for a similar problem someone had with a Lotus Notes account. I used it to resolve my issue with a different email account (basically followed the same steps, and then looked for the particular account I needed to delete)... hope it helps!

How to reset your Apple ID password.
Go to iforgot.apple.com and type in your Apple ID, then click 'Next'.
Verify your date of birth, then click 'Next'.
You'll be able to choose one of two methods to reset your password, either E-Mail Authentication or Answer Security Questions.
If neither method works, then go to https://getsupport.apple.com
(If you see a message that says 'There are no products registered to this Apple ID, simply click on 'See all products and services')
Choose 'More Products & Services', then 'Apple ID'.
    A new page will open.
Choose 'Other Apple ID Topics', then 'Lost or forgotten Apple ID password'.
    Click the blue 'Continue' button.
Select the contact option that suits your needs best.
How to reset your Apple ID security questions.
Go to appleid.apple.com, click on the blue button that says 'Manage Your Apple ID'.
Log in with your Apple ID and password. (If you have forgotten your Apple ID password, go to iforgot.apple.com first to reset your password with a password recovery email)
Go to the Password & Security section on the left side, and click on the link underneath the security questions that says 'Forgot your answers? Send reset security info email to [email]'.  This will generate an automated e-mail that will allow you to reset your security questions.
If that doesn't work, or  there is no rescue email link available, then click on 'Temporary Support PIN' that is in the bottom left side, and generate a 4-digit PIN for the Apple Account Security Advisor you will be contacting later.
    Next, go to https://getsupport.apple.com
(If you see a message that says 'There are no products registered to this Apple ID, simply click on 'See all products and services')
Choose 'More Products & Services', then 'Apple ID'.
    A new page will open.
Choose 'Other Apple ID Topics', then 'Forgotten Apple ID Security Questions'.
    Click the blue 'Continue' button.
Select the contact option that suits your needs best.

  • Notes duplicate and unable to delete duplication

I have made notes and there is a duplication of each note up to 10 times.  I am unable to delete the excess notes.  Help on this issue is not available.  Anyone have suggestions?

Back up all data before proceeding.
Check the Internet Accounts or Mail, Contacts & Calendar preference pane to make sure you're not synchronizing Notes in more than one account.
If you're not, disable Notes synchronization temporarily.
    Quit Notes, if it's running.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.Notes
Copy the whole line of text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
    In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder
from the menu bar. Paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V, then press return. A Finder window should open with a folder selected. If it does, move the selected folder—not just its contents—to the Desktop.
The folder you're moving is named "com.apple.Notes" It is not the subfolder named "Data" or anything else.
    Re-enable Notes synchronization.
Relaunch Notes and test. If it works now, delete the folder you moved. Otherwise, quit again, and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place.
Caution: If you delete some or all of the contents of the selected folder, but leave the folder itself in place, the application may not launch. Deleting the folder will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

  • Unable to delete mail from inbox. Message cannot move mail from inbox to trash.  How do I solve this.

I am unable to delete mail from my inbox.  A window appears saying "message could not be moved to the mailbox trash.  How do I fix this.

Give your phone a reboot - hold down power/home button together for 10 to 15 secs or until you see the apple logo and then release, wait for your phone to reboot and then try moving  your mail again.

Unable to delete email from trash bin.  How do I do this?  If I select and chose delete, it doesn't.  What am I doing wrong?  My grand daughte is using my iPad and I don't want her to see some of the mail there.

There are two ways that should work. When you are in the trash folder, you can swipe on the email in the list - left to right - and a red Delete button should pop up. Or you can select - Edit - at the top of the list of messages and then select the message and tap delete.
Not sure exactly how this works - but if you have restrictions enabled - especially since you let your grandchild use the device - that may be restricting what you can do in the mail app. Go to Settings>General>Restrictions. If you have it set to on - turn it off or see if you have mail restricted.

  • Unable to delete an email from a Gmail account in Mail

I am unable to delete an email from my Gmail (IMAP) account within Mail on my MacBook. I get an error message that says there are no matches with the email. It does not show in Mail on my iMac or on my Gmail account online. I have rebuilt the mailbox, but don't know any other steps to try to fix this problem.
Does anyone know how to delete this email?
    Thanks -

Thanks for the suggestions. I did not find the message on my Gmail Internet account. I went into Mail Preferences, and used the Advanced tab under my Gmail account to uncheck "Enable this account". The account folders disappeared. When I restarted Mail and enabled Gmail again, the email was initially gone, but a few minutes later, reappeared. I don't know anything else left to do except delete the account and recreate it If you think of anything else, please let me know.
    Thanks -

  • Can't delete mail on phone, message says unable to move message the message could not be moved to the mailbox trash

can't delete mail on phone, message says, Unable to move message The message could not be moved to the mailbox trash.

Delete your mail account/s and re-add them.
This is what worked for me but I've read about other solutions that have worked for some people as well:

Mysterious files being created in pages. Unable to unlock or delete.

It turns out that you cannot update or delete a Syndication Map that is currently assigned to a Port in the Repository.  You must remove the map from the Port in the Repository and then you can change and/or delete them.
    1) bring up the MDM Console
    2) Unload the repository
    3) drill into Admin ~ Port
    4) Remove or change the map associated to the port
    5) Load the repository
    6) Then you go into Syndicator and either Update the Map or Delete it
It had nothing to do with security.
    Thank you for your help.

  • Unable to delete IMAP mail account in Yosemite

I have set up a number of IMAP mail accounts, but have changed servers. I'm unable to delete the old accounts in the "Accounts" tab of Mail with an "error" dialog referring me to "Internet Accounts" tab of System Preferences. The accounts do NOT exist in this list. The accounts have been unchanged for years and have migrated with each OS & Mail.app upgrade.
I don't necessarily wish to delete the accounts - if I could just edit the server details that would do the job, however that  field is greyed-out and can't be edited.

I am having the exact same problem. iPhone 5 on 7.1. I try to 'turn off' contacts, the phone requires me to 'delete my account'. I agree to do so, and the phone just 'hangs' at the 'Delete' screen. I have allowed it to continue for over a half hour.

  • Can't sign out of iCloud on Yosemite. Mail was unable to delete 'email'.

I have a MacBook Pro running Yosemite 10.10.1 and I'm trying to log out of my iCloud account, but it won't let me. The error message I keep getting says,
"Mail was unable to delete 'email'. Relaunch Mail then sign out of iCloud again."  I get the same message if I try to delete the account from Internet Accounts.
I've tried adding the email account in, but it says it's already there. I've deleted the com.apple.mail folder rebooted and tried and still the same thing.
The supervisor and engineers at Apple phone support have yet to find a solution for this other than wiping my system clean and starting fresh. That's definitely not my preference.
Any help would be much appreciated!
    Thanks,
    Stacy

I had the same issue. I rebooted to safe mode by holding the shift key at boot up. From there I went to System Preferences, iCloud, and I was able to finally sign out.
    Hope this works for you.

  • Unable to delete Planning application created through EPMA

    Hi friends,
Iam unable to delete the planning application created through EPMA.Tried logging in as admin still its not allowing.
I tried in application view-> right click and delete.it will ask for all related info and when I say 'delete', the status is aborted.
Can anyone tell whether we can delete an application created through EPMA. or is there a way to delete in backend.
    Regards.

    Hi,
You could try and find more information from the logs, first change the level of logging for EPMA, it is set as standard to INFO and it is probably best changed to DEBUG.
    To do this
    Stop EPMA
Go to the deployed Web application directory.
    For Tomcat, this is C:\Hyperion\deployments\Tomcat5\EPMAWebTier\webapps\awb\WEB-INF\conf.
    Open AWBLog4j.properties.
    Modify this line:
log4j.logger.com.hyperion.awb=ERROR,logfile, stdout to log4j.logger.com.hyperion.awb=DEBUG ,logfile, stdout
    RESTART EPMA
Then try and delete again and check to see if the logs have further information.
    Cheers

  • Unable to delete e-mail

So here's a weird problem for you out there. A while back, I got an e-mail from a friend of mine on my iPod. After reading it, I tried to delete it. I got an error message back about being unable to delete it. I tried a couple more times, same problem. I ended up being able to delete it by taking my iPod offline, deleting it (and then emptying it from my trash), and then reconnecting. Has anyone had a similar issue before and know what might have caused this? Thanks.

I have my GMail pushed to my iPod. Does that explain anything?
