Mail creates unwanted Drafts folders
Every time i open Mail (V. 10.5.5) a drafts file has been created in the "On My Mac" and "Mac.com" sections. I delete them. I go into preferences and uncheck the "store drafts on the server" box. Next time, the draft folders are there again and the "store drafts" box is again checked. I turned off the sync function in System Preferences. That did not help. Finding folders that i do not want or need is very annoying. What is causing Mail to reset my preferences?
All my accounts are disabled from storing draft emails on the server. It's possible your system has a corrupt .plist file.
Create a new user account for testing. Add your email account there and see if it works correctly there.

Mac Mail creating additional Drafts
When I generate a message in Mac Mail, or when I reply to a message I have received, I often discover (after the reply/message has gone) that another version of the message is sitting in my drafts folder. Normally it is only a draft until it is sent, then it disappears from the draft folder. But not always. Initially I thought the message had not gone, so I clicked on send again and it then disappeared from the drafts folder, but the recipeint then told me they had received the same message twice.
Anyone any idea why the application is generating a second draft?It may be account-related. From Mail Help:

The Drafts mailbox contains messages you’ve saved but haven’t sent yet. The Drafts mailbox remains displayed until there are no drafts and you quit Mail.
If you have an Exchange or Internet Message Access Protocol (IMAP) account that is set to save drafts on the server, then as soon as Mail syncs with the server, any drafts you save are shown on your other computers that use that account. To see the drafts immediately, choose Mailbox > Synchronize for the account. -
Mail imap problems: Mail created random folders and saves multiple drafts
Hi there, I have a brand new MacBook Pro, and set up Mail to imap my two primary email accounts (new to discussion forum and forums in general):
I have two imap accounts set up: Gmail and Network Solutions (my work webmail). Gmail is working fine.
Network Solutions imap account:
- Saves numerous copies of drafts of the same email as I type, and when I try to delete them (select them all, delete, or select all and move to trash), I get a message saying the Network Solutions server on port 143 has timed out. So I have a bunch of drafts that I can't clear.

The thing is, that in Network Solutions, prior to imapping with Mail, I had these folders:

NOW, after setting up imap to Mail, new folders have appeared in Network Solutions:

If I want to reference an email I sent after Nov 6, I have to log onto my Network Solutions webmail and go to that Sent Messages folder, move them to the Sent folder, then log out and update my Mail, at which point, I can see them on Mail.
I have not made a single folder in Mail -- what's there is a result of me setting up the two imap accounts.
Network Solutions has no idea what that "locker" folder is, it is not a Network Solutions-generated folder, does not appear in my Network Solutions webmail folder list, and I did not make it.
Can anyone help me clean this up, explain these mysterious folders, why I can't delete Net Sol drafts, why I can't get my sent messages that are more recent than Nov 6 into Mail, even though I've been primarily using Mail to send and receive mail for both Gmail and Network Solutions?

I am having a very strange problem here which started about a week ago, maybe someone can point me in the right direction:
1) I use both gmail and my domain's server email which load into Mail.app. I use gmail because I like their spam filter and I use their SMTP because where I am, my ISP SMTP server isn't very reliable. Gmail solves my outgoing mail problem, but doesn't support showing when mail has been answered and that is a useful feature.
2) My procedure is to open up gmail in my browser, mark and delete the spam (IMAP Account), then close the browser and open mail.app
3) I have a rule in mail.app which moves my gmail to my domain mail Inbox where I organized with folders and subfolders and use many signatures to send different email out to customers. Mail has been very good as you can do quite a lot with it compared to most other email clients for OSX. I do this for three domains, with several email addresses within each domain.
4) In mail.app, I can choose which mailbox to use for sent mail, junk, etc. This way I am sending from my domain, the email response shows and is linked to that mail so I can look for old responses fast and organize things by department. Spotlight or search works fast and perfectly. It's a good solution which I have used for well over a year (whenever gmail released IMAP services), or was, until a week ago.
Problem 1) As of now, when I open the mail account, the domain subfolders which should be below my Inbox are no longer there. If I look lower to the account folder, sometimes the folders show up there, sometimes they do not show up at all, but they are online in my web-based mail with my hosting company. The mails are not lost, but mail.app is not connecting with the host correctly as they appear and disappear randomly.
Problem 2) Every time I open mail.app now, most of my email inbox folders have to download all of the mail and their attachments again, even though I have the boxes in preferences correctly checked. Once the inbox loads all of the mail, then the subfolders disappear. This is very consistent. As long as there is no mail showing in the inbox, then the subfolders are showing correctly. As soon as the inbox is loaded showing mails, then the subfolders either disappear or move.
Problem 3). The mailboxes that my hosting's webmail service creates (like deleted mail, mail to delete, trash, trash delete, whatever, it's a Windows server) keep showing up in Mail. They never did that before. Once I deleted them, I could see them online, but not in mail. All was as it should be. Now they keep coming back every time I reconnect and I often have to reset which mailbox is being used for junk, sent mail, drafts, etc.
Problem 4). This same problem happens on all three of my machines, two being PPC and one Intel, running 10.4.11 and 10.5.5 respectively. The problem started happening on all my machines at the same time. This is also connection from three different ISPs.
Solution? My hosting company says that they have changed nothing in their settings (IMAP uses Port 143 and I do get a time-out error sometimes but not often). They have tried it in Outlook and do not get the same results, they say it's working fine. I have tried to subscribe in Leopard (you can't do this is Tiger, only in Leopard, but Mail.app says I have no subscribed folders, which is not true). The Quota Limits shows the standard Mail.app mailboxes, the Subscription List shows nothing, and no way to change it).
I tried Thunderbird and it connects faster, downloads faster and the folders are OK, but I still get mail folders appearing randomly. Sometimes I get mail folders appearing that I have not ever created with names like "System Mail". Sometimes I get mail boxes which are stored On My Mac which appear on IMAP suddenly. (Also, Thunderbird has poor signature file support, so I would prefer to use Mail, it's a better program overall.)
I have tried rebuilding the mail accounts, have done this, realistically, 25 times. Yesterday I did a complete reinstall of 10.5.5 just because I am at the end of my rope. Now I am about ready to change hosting companies as I am still having the same trouble. I am in the process of archiving all of my mail into Gmail so I can switch hosts if that is the problem. But, I would like to know first if that is actually the problem, since overall I am pretty happy with my hosting company. They are in Arizona and speak my language and they are easy to talk with. However, they do not have a Mac there so they cannot test my situation from their facility.
It's a strange problem in that one, I have used the system fine for well over a year with perfect results. Two, it happens on three different Mac used in three different places (office, home, and another person's home), and three, I have not changed hosting companies, I have been using the same host for two years and they deny changing any settings on their end.
The hosting company has no answer for me, they are not Mac users, and say that it's perfect in Outlook, but it's not actually perfect in Outlook either as mailboxes still appear randomly and sent mail ends up in my inbox randomly even in Outlook. They just don't realize it as they are not watching my mail boxes except when I am on the phone with them.
I am not having trouble with my websites. I do not have this problem with Gmail, only with my domain webmail.
I have to use Windows because of a particular shopping cart system I use, but IMAP systems should be the same on Windows or anything else. Some how, some where, some one has changed some thing. Any idea what and how to solve the problem?

Why is mail creating folders on my mac AND my mail server?
strange things happening, please tell me i am not alone.
i have an IMAP account set up in mail
preferences>accounts>mailbox behaviors i have all unchecked except for 'move deleted messages to the trash'
everytime i open mail, or even while its open, all these mailboxes get created. i have an inbox inside my inbox, which has a deleted messages folder inside that. plus another deleted messages folder under the 'on my mac' heading in the sidebar. then there is another set of folders below that: deleted messages, drafts, sent and trash. what is going on here?
and to top it off, if i log into my mail server, there are two new folders, one called 'deleted messages' and another called 'apple mail to do'
i dont even know where to begin.... when i delete the folders, they keep coming back...
should i delete the 'mail' folder in the user library and the com.apple.mail.plist file and start over?Hi Geoff,
It sounds like your mail service provider has created some default folders in your account e.g. sent, trash etc. Mail cannot know which folders to use so it creates it's own e.g. Apple Mail To Do, Deleted Messages.
If you look at the sidebar in Mail after you create the account, you should see a section (probably near the bottom) that has the name of your IMAP account. Click on the disclosure triangle and you should see the folders that your mail service provider set up for you. If you would prefer to use one of those then choose Mailbox > Use This Mailbox For > Drafts/Sent/Trash/Junk as appropriate. You will then find that the folders Mail created in the other parts of the sidebar get moved and replaced by the ones you selected. You can safely delete the folders created by Mail afterwards if you like (move any messages you want to keep first though).
Mail will still create Apple Mail To Do.
Finally, the INBOX within the INBOX sounds like you need your IMAP Path Prefix set properly in the preferences for your account. Put the words that appear in square brackets in there.

Email seems to be sent, but it doesn't arrive. No 'unable to send' message, sent items and draft folders are empty. The mail disappears. I tried to fully turn off the iPad and have it restart. But it doesn't go off. I keep seeing the small white 'turning wheel' untill the battery is gone. After that, it works again (and so does the e-mail). This happens about every week. What can I do?

Anyway, as I mentioned, I don't use any sync-able email, just a very plain-jane POP email provider. iSync reports no devices and has nothing in its log, which matches my never having installed anything in need of syncing.
The thing is, if Mail says its sending something when nothing was ever sent, that's a largish bug whether it is actually sending something or isn't, and there isn't really enough info here to know which of those are the case. Maybe Mail just displays "Sending" because an attempt to do something reasonable is timing out, maybe it does an innocuous and normal POP thing using very confusing nomenclature, or maybe it's really trying to send something which has a wrong flag or something. There isn't really enough info to know what is going on, so I was hoping someone could identify the symptoms. -
I have an ipad2 and was using yahoo mail. I pressed send and it didn't work however it created a draft. I then opened the draft and now I can not cancel or send it or close the window. It just remains in the mail screen. Any suggestions?
I tried that but it is still stuck in Draft. Cancel button does not work but Send button does.

Why does mail create two folders for incoming mail?

i'm using the latest version of mac and i've set up a gmail (imap) account on mail. When i first created the imap account, all seemed in order, then after about 5 minutes of activity (i believe it was the moment i started composing my own email), Mail created a series of new folders under the standard "inbox, sent and junk" folders. There is now also a GMAIL tab there which has a bunch of subcategories like sent mail and junk and trash. when i receive new emails, they show up in both the default inbox and also in the gmail inbox. I'd rather just receive them in the default inbox because it looks like i am receiving double the mail and have to click both folders in order to mark the new mail as unread. any advice? hope i was able to bring my subject over clearly enough.

What you describe sounds like normal behavior to me. IMAP accounts create their own section in Mail's sidebar as well as sub-mailboxes in the standard mailboxes. If you see Sent/Trash/Junk as subfolders in the (white) Gmail folder, select each one in turn and click Mailbox menu > "Use this mailbox for...".

Does OS X Server Mail have a "Drafts, Spam, Archive" Folders?
Does OS X Server mail contain a drafts, spam, and archive folder? My iPhone configured for IMAP and my webmail both can't find them. Do I need to do some special setup for it?
Your mail client performs spam filtering, and you can choose to enable — beyond the mail server configuration and filtering settings available in Server.app — and configure and manage AMaViS and Spamassassin settings yourself via the command line tools. (Here's a slightly older Lion spamassassin discussion.)
The OS X Server 10.6 Mail Service Administration manual have rather more detail than the current Mavericks documentation, but its contents are somewhat dated. More than a little of the settings and capabilities have been removed with the replacement of Server Admin.app and related bits with Server.app, leaving you with the command line and configuration files. -

I found a thread from '06 where someone discovered that the problem happens when a group name is the same as a user name. When he changed the short group name, the problem went away. Sure enough, I realized I did have a group name with the same short name as an (admin) user. However when I changed the short group name and restarted mail service, these unwanted shared folders did not go away.
On a possibly related note, I have also found the same stuff inside /var/spool/imap:

My imap users are seeing these shared folders in their mailbox, and I don't want them to. I cannot delete these shared folders using an email client. What is the best way to delete them? Thanks in advance for your assistance.
Xserve Mac OS X (10.4.8)ok pterobyte heres the log entries and the header part of messages causing the problem. At the moment the reason the 2 shared boxes are showing up repeatedly is cause there in my queue so qmgr is trying to send them, it creates the error in the log and bingo the shared box appears. The mail DID NOT come from in house as the header snippets will show. (i pulled both raw email files from the /var/spool/postfix/deferred/ to examine) It appears and I'm only guessing cause I'm no expert but someone from the outside is trying to relay a virus/spam through my smtp with some sort of back door in the coding of the from header. Both e-mails in the queue look like spam and have a MIME attach that looks virus like.

Error: Not able to send mail from OWA 2010. When I send mail, the mails go to Drafts Folder. I have installed everything correctly but when I tried to open the OWA and trying to send mail from OWA. The mails do not deliver and mails become saved in Drafts folder. I tried to re-send messaged from Draft also but not able to send.

Scenario: I have below configuration of exchange 2010 server Setup:
1. Windows Domain Controller with Global Catalog on Windows Server 2008 which only for Windows 2008 Server Native.
Server Name: WDC2010
Domain: Blazex.Com
2. Hub/Client Access Server: It is installed on Windows Server 2008. As per Microsoft recommendation, I have just installed Windows Server 2008 and then join this computer to Blazex.com.
After that installed the Hub/Client Access Exchange role servers.
Server Name: HC2010.blazex.com (This is not a Addition Member server or ADC)
Role: Hub and Client Access Server.
3. Mailbox Server: It is installed on Windows Server 2008. As per Microsoft recommendation, I have just installed Windows Server 2008 and then join this computer to Blazex.com.
After that installed the Mailbox Exchange role servers.
Server Name: MBX2010.blazex.com (This is not a Addition Member server or ADC)
Role: Mailbox Server.
4. 2nd Mailbox Server: It is installed on Windows Server 2008. As per Microsoft recommendation, I have just installed Windows Server 2008 and then join this computer to Blazex.com.
After that installed the Mailbox Exchange role servers.
Server Name: 2MBX2010.blazex.com (This is not a Addition Member server or ADC)
Role: Mailbox Server.
5. Client Windows 7: It is installed on Windows 7 Ultimate Workstation. As per Microsoft recommendation, I have just installed Windows 7 and then join this computer to Blazex.com.
Workstation Name: WIN7.blazex.com
Role: Workstation

I don't know what I am missing but I think there is some configuration I need to do on Hub/Client Access Server (HC2010). I tried to access the mailbox on XP Client system through OWA. I get the same problem as Win7.
Can someone please help me on this?

I have done the troubleshooting but I didn't find any problem at server side. I will send you mail also with all EXBPA report and as well DC, HC and Mailbox servers' Application Log and System Log.

3. Please check application log, whether any error event logged there. They could come from ADAccess related error or etc.
I didn't see any ADAccess event on the server. For this I have left my lab PC open and I will check again.
4. We find that if mail .que gets corrupt, then this issue will occur, please try to move the affected user to another store and then test the issue.
I am facing this problem with all users (7 users). Anyway I moved one user from one server Mailbox Database (2mbx2010) to Other Server Mailbox Database (mbx2010). After that
a) Rebooted the Workstation
b) Login successfully with same user.
c) Delete the Old MS Outlook Profile
d) Create New profile for same user without any problem.

f) Open the OWA successfully for Same user.
g) Tried to send mail but again mail went to Drafts Folder.
5. I noticed that you test the issue after you close outlook. I recommend you to reboot your pc and then access
mailbox via OWA to test the issue.
I tried you suggested option, but sorry it also couldn't help.
6. You also check your disk space.
All Servers have Enough Disk Space. Check the EXBPA Report.
7. You may run EXTRA to get log information for further troubleshooting.
Need more time for this.
8. Please save application log, system log as *.evt file, then send them with EXTRA,EXBPA report to [email protected] .

There will be some error log you will be that the system is not able to communicate with DC/DC, MBX or HC at everyday around 3 AM or some time 6 PM Evening also. These error came because I have installed VM on Windows 7 Workstation and after 45 min or one hrs. if I don't work on PC, then pc goes to sleep. so you may ignore these alerts.

Mail 2.1 and folders loading very slowly

just had to perform installs on a brandnew MacBook. We downloaded all updates, including 10.4.7 and then tried to setup Mail. Everything was working fine until we created folders in Mail that are stored locally. They appear just fine until Mail is restarted. Then they need up to 30 seconds to appear in mail even with no messages in them.
Deleting the Envelope.index-file works just for one restart and then again, folders need a very long period of time to load up.
Disk utility's repair permissions doesn't find anything to repair, even before and after recreating the Envelope.index.
I no longer know, where the error might be.
Already trashed the entire Mail-folder and the mail.plist and to set up mail again - this procedure didn't help me out, either.
As to note again. I just installed the system, today. And Mail setup was the first thing after all installs and updates.
We updated on a system, where nothing had been done except installing the entire MacOS by using the Install Discs that came with the MacBook.
Does anybody know, how we can tell Mail to display the folders properly on startup?

EnricoWhat makes you think Mail is syncing with .Mac? Could it be that it's looking for certificates instead? Open Keychain Access > Preferences, and disable Search .Mac For Certificates if it's enabled. Take a look at the following articles for an explanation of why this could be a problem:

Also, go to Apple Menu > System Preferences > Network > Show: Network Port Configurations. Make sure that the configuration used to connect to Internet is at the top of the list, and disable any communications/networking configuration enabled, but not in use. -
Mails struck in Drafts folder after Transport Agent installed in Exchange Server 2013

I created Transport Agent and installed successfully in exchange server 2013.
After that mails are struck in drafts folder.
I thought because of My Custom transport Agent , then i Uninstall Transport agent.
but still no use.
I restart Microsoft Exchange Transport Service and restart my server also.

System is currently switching between mutliple screens without me touching it. The system has created several new folders. The system is performing as if it is being remotely controlled.
How recently did you switch? If it's less than 60 days, then Verizon simply reinstates your previous account. The fact that you were on the EDGE plan and mailed the devices back, and they apparently are somewhere in the system, could cause complications, and it might just work out that you just go back on the same plan and they set you up with the same devices. I'm not sure how it will go - but since you are still being billed for the devices...

I have noticed that I have two draft folders in my iPad and iPhone – one is for my MS Outlook Exchange and the other seems to be the iPad mail draft folder. I typed a lengthily email on my laptop, saved it in the draft folder, then wanted to edit it from my iPad or iPhone. The email has been saved in the MS Outlook Exchange’s draft folder however I can’t seem to edit it from my iPad or iPhone. If I type an email from my iPad or iPhone and save it as a draft, I can edit it as usual. I have also tried to move the email from the Exchange draft folder to the iPad’s mail draft folder but I couldn’t move the file.
Is there any way I can edit emails saved as a draft through my MS Outlook Exchange and then if necessary edit it again from my iPad.After so many years of using iOS, I have never needed this function so didn't realise it was missing.
Just found a user requiring this functionality on 6.0.1 and this still does not work.
Do we have any advice on this?
