Mail dead on upgrade to 10.5.6

I just upgraded my G4 Powermac from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6, using the Mac pack which provides the new OS, iWork and iLife. I chose to archive and upgrade, and everything seems to be working except Mail, which doesn't open a window without my opening it from the File menu, and it won't close with going to Force Quit. None of the message boxes have messages in them.
Other programmes seem to have been reloaded correctly, although I haven't had time to check them all.
I am trying a second upgrade cycle now, but would like to know if others have had this problem, and if so, how they solved it.
Thanks

I'm adding to the above, to see if it helps others understand what is going on.
I have re-installed again, to no useful effect.
I have examined my hard disc, looking at the various library folders; my e-mails are in the Mail folder in the Library file of my updated Home folder, not in the archived Mail folder in the "Previous System" folder - that means the "Archive and Re-instal" worked as it should. The problem lies with the Mail software itself.
I can't find a Mail download on the Apple site - the only one there expects to find an earlier version of OS 10.5, and won't work with mine.
I have checked my Permissions - no problems there.
How do I get a working copy of Mail?
Thankfully I have my MacBook!

  • Mail problems after upgrading to Leopard 10.5.6

To day I upgraded my daughter's MacBook to Leopard 10.5.6 (from about 10.3 ?)
During the install the only problem was at the very end, the configuration wizard failed to make connection with the internet because Airport had lost the password for my wireless router. Once this had been reinserted we had instant internet connection, but by then I had closed the wizard.
Everything else went well except for Mail, the most important application!
When you click on Mail in the docking area it appears in the bar at the top of the screen but no window opens. To get one open we had to click on file> new viewer window. But this window was blank. Clicking on get new mail did nothing. No emails of any kind were visible. Checking the account details showed that they had transferred correctly, and the diagnostic window showed that it was connecting to the server and logging into the IMAP mail account OK.
Rebooting the Mac did not help.
The Mail program has to be forced to shut down, it won't exit gracefully.
I could not get it to send a message either, click "send" and it just sat there spinning its wheels.
At no point did we get any error messages.
We took a backup of the entire system to an external USB drive before the upgrade and all the files associated with Mail appear to be in the same place as before. There still seem to be hundreds of emails on file, we just can't see them. Clicking on one of there email files does nothing.
Is this a known problem? Is there some new feature of Mail we are not using? Has Mail failed to upgrade correctly? Any ideas how to fix this?
I've just found a note on theappleblog.com that suggests that Mailbox > Rebuild will solve this problem, but on this machine "Rebuild" is greyed out.

    Hi,
Please note that this upgrade related problem would very likely be what has been covered by the support document at the link below:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2537
If you also find any files named to include MessageSorting (which would mean you once have upgraded from a version of OSX earlier than 10.4, which is clearly the case for you), remove those, also, but never restore those.
Often this is all that needs to be done, but you might then need to force an overall reindexing via the removal of the Envelope Index. Note the special instructions when forcing the reindexing of IMAP or Exchange accounts in the following:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mail/3.0/en/14019.html
This will force the reindexing of all the POP mailboxes and all On My Mac mailboxes. With regard to any IMAP accounts if you have any, the practical result of this action of removing the account folder, is that with the IMAP account still set up in the Preferences, Mail will connect to the IMAP server and create a new account folder, and while doing so will index the messages in the mailbox folders of the IMAP accounts on the server.
    Keep me posted.

  • How do I keep my email password from remaining in Preferences? I want to enter it every time I get my mail. I upgraded to OS M Lion but it won't let me delete it from preferences. It's worked prior to using M. Lion. Any suggestions? Thanks!! Jen

How do I keep my email password from remaining in Preferences? I want to enter it every time I get my mail. I upgraded to OS M Lion but it won't let me delete it from preferences (the password from Account Info). Once you enter the password, it keeps it permanently. i do not want that.  It's worked prior to using M. Lion. Any suggestions? Also, The other pressing issue i have is, I DO NOT want ANY mail showing in my inboxes when Mail starts UNTIL i enter that password for each account. Instead of creating different user accounts for the MacBook, it's just easier this way. Or is it? If this is a permanent thing, then I may switch back to Lion. I guess I shoud've waited until the kinks were out before installing (**** Mac-head!)
Thank you all kindly for any suggestions & your time
    Regards,
    JC

I DO NOT want ANY mail showing in my inboxes when Mail starts UNTIL i enter that password for each account.
That is simply not possible with Mail, and never has been.  Anyone who uses your account can see all messages stored in Mail.  The only true solution is to not let other people use your account.  Let other people use the guest account, or if you share the machine with someone else, set up a separate user account for that person.  This will also solve the problem of remembering the password.  It will become a non-issue for Mail to remember your password if nobody else has access to your account.

  • Mail won't upgrade in ML

After installing ML Mail will finish upgrading the database, progress bar just sits in place for hours but doesn't time out.  Anyone else had this issue?

Actually I found this thread more helpful
If it is hanging on the 'upgrading database' portion please see this discussion and the solution posted by registerednderd at the bottom of the first page.  It worked for me at least to get past the 'upgrading database' hangup and then to import the old messages.

    Lost my mail
after I upgraded to IOS8. It crashes every time I click on mail. Yet, I can send photos and forward things in outgoing mail. how to restore?

Answering my own question here. It's fixed! Another user recommended I switch to another wireless network then back to mine. And it worked! Mail is sending again with no problem.

  • Why has my Safari and MAIL slowed after upgrading to Mountain Lion on my MacBookPro ?

Why has my Safari and MAIL slowed after upgrading to Mountain Lion ? I have mid-2009 MBPro and have very fast Internet access router.

I have noticed the same thing on my MAC.  Mail has become very "clunky"- Before Mountain Lion, whenever I clicked on a msg or a function (delete), it would respond immediately.  With Mountain Lion there is an unacceptable hesitation.  What is going on with this latest update?

  • Lost e-mail on Tiger upgrade

I just upgraded to Tiger from 10.3.9 and all of my mail before the upgrade says "The message from [e-mail address] concerning [Subject] has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
Have I lost all of my old e-mail permanently?

Boy, you were not kidding about traffic on this issue. There's a technical paper on it also. I solved the problem by a simple rebuilding, except for one odd box where rebuilding didn't work so I moved the mail from a disabled box to the active box and then rebuilt.
So rebuilding isn't unimportant. I thought it was just like when you compressed your mail in the old AOL so I basically ignored doing it.

  • Missing Mail Rules after upgrade to 10.8.2 from 10.6.8

The title says it all, really - I just upgraded to 10.8.2 via the App Store from 10.6.8, and, after a long period of re-indexing my email, Mail.app opened up and all of my sorting rules were gone  gone gone.
There doesn't seem to be an easily findable post on this already, so I'm adding one here. Does anyone have any advice?
    thanks,
    -j.

Ok, never mind: re-starting Mail solved the problem.

  • Mail problems after upgrade

I've just upgraded my OS from 10.4.11 to 10.5.6. (PowerPC G4, dual 867 MHz). Everything seems OK except Mail. It show my mailboxes, but no mail in any. "Get Mail" doesn't work. I've checked account settings--they're correct. Connection Doctor indicates all the connections and logins to the servers were successful. But the Activity Monitor shows spinning poles and says, "Connecting to server. ." or "Gathering children fro disk for local account," and doesn't change. Any advice would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

I just found an archived posting from JimH21111 which solved the problem:
A much better solution then archiving and reinstalling the OS was posted in a related thread: http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1830441&tstart=30

  • "On My Mac" saved mail gone since upgrading to Mountain Lion

I upgraded my iMac from Snow Leopard to Mountain Lion this past week. Mail worked fine for a few days and then my Mail Rules and my "On My Mac" saved mail (DECADES worth of mail!!!) disappeared.
I have both a Time Machine backup of my Snow Leopard from right before the upgrade, as well as a SuperDuper clone.
I have already tried the following:
Rebuilding the mailbox (it rebuilt my Inbox, but nothing showed up "On My Mac" and no, nothing is hidden.
Copying the Mail folder from my Snow Leopard backup to my Mountain Lion desktop and copying the .mbox files and associated .plist files for the "On My Mac" saved mail into the "Mailbox" folder in V2 on Mountain Lion. When I then launched Mail it showed "On My Mac" and the names of all of my saved mail folder, but those folders were empty. I attempted to rebuild those folders, but nothing showed up.
Importing the .mbox files from the "On My Mac" saved mail, but it only showed two Sent Items folders as being able to be imported. None of my actual "On My Mac" many saved mail folders.
I could really use some help here. I have already posted on Macintouch and nothing suggested has helped thus far.
I really cannot lose my saved mail. The contents of each of those .mbox saved mail folders absolutely contains my saved email. There are tons of "emlx" files.
    Thanks!

    Misery loves company. ;-)
Glad you found yours. What did you do to make it show up in Mail again?
I just got off the phone with Apple support and still have no resolution. I got kicked up one level and now that person has to kick it up again because they don't know how to fix my problem. I have been told it could be up to 48 hours until I hear from someone again. Ugh
Your mention of the "archive" folder sent me to look at my mailbox structure.
For some reason, I appear to have 2 mailboxes for my .Mac email (sorry - I still call it .Mac!). I don't know why, and each has 1GB of stuff in it. The first one has an archive.mbox with only a .plist in it. No folders. The other one has neither a .plist nor a folder. The other .mbox stuff has both a .plist and a folder with individual files (emails).
I really shouldn't have to revert to Snow Leopard to get my stuff back. There has got to be a way to have Mountain Lion Mail read my Saved Mail (On My Mac) folder. It's got 3GB of stuff in there.

  • Mail issues since upgrading to Mountain Lion

    Hello everyone,
Today I've upgraded to Mountain Lion. When I opened mail my (serveral) hotmail accounts didn't work (kept 'offline').
Got this message: "Mail can't connect to the account ***@live.nl"
    http://img835.imageshack.us/img835/6369/geenverbinding.jpg
I already tried to check the settings, (yes, I also used google) but they seem to be correct:
    http://img23.imageshack.us/img23/619/accountinfo.jpg
    http://img31.imageshack.us/img31/5320/geadvanceerd.jpg
Now I've deleted all the accounts to completely reconfigure them, but this didn't work either.
I didn't have this issue in Snow Leopard, and 'cause I use my email accounts a lot it would be nice if it could be fixed asap..
Also, only the icloud email seems to work properly, gmail, exchange (Microsoft) and hotmail (live.nl as well as hotmail.com) don't work.
    Please help me..

Jeez.. It's annoying. I've tried reinstalling it, yesterday, but I also restored all the backup from TimeMachine, I just didn't want to go through all the setting up of preferences and applications again just because of this single problem. But it was all to no avail.
I guess after all I'll have to start from scratch. =(
Anywayz.. do you have the link to the other threads? Would appreciate that.
    Thanks!
