Mail deleted by iCal "Enable email invitations" - recoverable?

Okay, folks, pretty stupid mistake on my end.
Thinking that MacOS is "don't worry about reading the manual" on the server end as well, I set up "enable email invitations" using my own personal email account for testing purposes.
I wasn't aware that - even though I had selected IMAP during setup - iCal server would clean out my mailbox!
Odd: it cleaned out both the Inbox AND the sent items folder!
In any case, all my emails are gone; apparently, this happened while both my Macs were online, so the local IMAP stores on both are also clean.
DISASTER!
Does iCal completely destroy the contents of the mailbox it is set up to use, or does it hoard it someplace so that I can get it back?
Please help!
Thank you.
Best regards,
Hans

If there are not in your deleted mail (Trash) folder - then I'm sorry there are lost forever.

iCal Server email invitations - how to test and get this feature working
Thanks Apple for introducing this nice little feature into iCal but then completely neglecting to write any sort of useful manual that can explain what to do when it doesn't work after you set it up for the first time.
At long, long last we have finally got there after about 6 months of fiddling on and off, so I thought I had better post up the process since many have similar issues and it is hard to ascertain what is going on.
Using an external email server was just a waste of time and it still wouldn't handle the replies properly even though it was supposed to handle '+addressing'. In the end I set up a special gmail account for the iCal server and finally got it working. I list here the process of configuring and testing the system to check that each little stage is working.
    Set up a Gmail account in Apple Mail to access and test in the usual way for any email account (e.g. [email protected].);
Set the iCal server email to access the same email using the following settings:
    IMAP
    SMTP
    [email protected]
    smtp.gmail.com
    Port: 993 [x] Use SSL
    Port: 587 [x] Use SSL
    User & Pwd
    Login
    User & Pwd
    To test the settings:
    send out a test email from Apple Mail to a non-server email address that you can access to check it has been received;
    send out a test email from your non-server email account to [email protected] and check that it is received;
this tells you that the GMail account is setup correctly and working
    Testing iCal:
    I noted that iCal was deleting any emails that arrive in the inBox in Apple Mail as soon as they arrived (this is to be expected);
    test that the invites are being sent from iCal by setting an event in iCal and inviting your non-server address (you may not see any sign of this in Apple Mail but you should catch it in the iCal server log and possibly in the Gmail sent mail box);
    check that the invite is received at your non-server account and Accept it in iCal on another machine - the reply is automatically sent back;
    the replies appear in Apple Mail but are quickly deleted by iCal. But their record for you to see is left in Gmail under 'All Mail';
Accepted invites appear as a notification button on the top left hand bar on iCal where you click to acknowledge them and then the attendee is shown as a green circled tick instead of a grey circled ?.
this shows that iCal invitations are working correctly. Whenever an event is updated, all invitees should be updated by email automatically.
I hope this helps anyone - I could certainly have done with something similar when I started with looking at this.

The Error and Access logfile in the Server app under iCal server are very useful in determining any errors. I got lots of imip errors when I didn't quite have the settings right. The port is critical and it won't tell you this is the problem if it fails.

  • ICal Server Email invitations HTTP post to SMTP server?

Hello all - We have an iCal server truing to post HTTP to an external SMTP server for email invitations. In the caldav error log:

Let me know if I can provide more information. I have reset the iCal email invitation /server settings numerous times with no effect.

Apparently the answer is Google Calendar.

  • Customize ical server  email invitation to events?

Is there a way to customize the email invitation that iCal server from snow leopard Server that sends to people outside of the organization when there is an event? maybe fonts? some custom text or company logo?
    Thank you.

iCal Server sends invitations to internal users too if you remove the email addresses of your internal users under "Info" in Workgroup Manager.
So the Open Directory does not have an entry for the users with your internal domain, which makes iCal Server see the user as an external one.

  • Ical Server Email Invitations Setup

Is there a guide to setup the Email Invitations? I have changed the settings over and over again in an attempt to make it work. I have tried pointing to the local mail server (same box) as well as our outside host with no luck. I have searched through many log files and am not seeing anything that will help me diagnose the issue. Any advise or guides out there? Thanks as usual for all of you help.
    Thom

Apparently the answer is Google Calendar.

  • ICal Server email invitations with external mail server

So I see lots of people have worked out the kinks to get iCal Server to send invites to external email accounts when using the Mail server on the same machine as the iCal Server, but who has it working when the mail server is somewhere else? Any help would be appreciated... I have setup it up like this:
    Email Address: [email protected]
    Incoming Mail Server: mail.mailserver.com
User Name: com.apple.calendarserver (I created this account on the mail server)
Password: Same as the one in my keychain for com.apple.calendarserver
    Outgoing Mail Server: mail.xyz.com
    Username: com.apple.calendarserver
Password: Same as the one in my keychain for com.apple.calendarserver
When I send invites, this is what I get in the logs:

Okay, got this figured out. Appears that the email server my client's company uses is terminating the connection when the Xserve tries to do anything. I setup a test Gmail account and used those settings instead and everything worked just fine.

  • Mail deletes attachments in some emails coming in, leaving the name of the file enclosed within 's

I received an email with an attachment, read the attachment once, and when I went to re-read it, it had been enclosed in <>'s and was no longer open-able.

    Eric Andrist wrote:
I sent you a copy of the email yesterday, but have not heard back.
Sorry about that. It was in my spam box.
There is nothing wrong with your message. It shows up fine in Apple Mail.
I think all you need to do is rebuild your mailbox. (Apple Mail, Mailbox menu > Rebuild)
The message you sent me was a Rich Text message. Due to the way e-mail works, Rich Text messages actually have one or more attachments. All e-mail programs work this way. The smarter e-mail programs, such as Apple Mail, will see that attachment and recognize that it isn't really an attachment, but rather a fancier version of the message. Then it will display the fancy message instead of the plain one.
Due to the way e-mail servers are designed, there can sometimes be a slight disconnect while the message is being downloaded. That could cause the message index to show that the message has an attachment while the message itself says there isn't one. There is an attachment, it is just being display inline, in the message, instead of the plain-old text. Certainly the idea was to reduce user confusion - not 100% successful.

If changing the Umlaut ü to something like ue in the Sender or Receiver Name everything is alright!
Thank you Apple for obviously Not testing Lion Server for international use :-/
Maybe this help someone else who is using umlauts with iCal Server external Email invitations

    Hello Daryn,
Thinks for commenting. I am very upset that Apple just said "No" when I asked for this to be fixed. There appears to be no way to submit this as an official bug that keeps ical from running.
Apple actually had me reinstall my whole server and the issue was still there and then they just said "Oh, well I will email someone about it.".
This is the first time Apple has stunk it up in my books. This is bad support for Server.

  • Ical sending emails from old email alias that was deleted, or from another email address

iCal, when I send a meeting invite is sending from an email alias that I no longer have. It was originally sending from one of my other email accounts, however, after deleting that account from my mac, iphone, ipad it now send from an email alias that no longer exists.
    Information that could help.
    1. I had DotMac and then MobileMe and now iCloud
    2. I had 5 email aliases when on MobileMe
    3. I deleted three of them after arriving to iCloud
    Things I have done
    1. Delted the other email account that it was sedning from.
    2. Deleted my iCloud accout on the computer, and then set it up again
    3. Deleted "My Address Book Card" and setup a new one for myself and indicated that was my card
    4. Deleted ALL but one email address on that card
    5. I am running latest updates of MacOS and all updates on iOS devices
HELP... it looks very unprofessional to be getting email addressses from an account that they cannot repond to.
    Where it Gets Weird
    1. They can accept the meeting invite and it wll record it as accepted
    2. But they cannot contact me at that email alias.

I have the same problem -- the ical event alert notification goes to an email address from a previous correspondent.  I have deleted his name from previous recipients, I have deleted his card from contacts, I have checked all the places where I am the default email and that appears okay.  BUT STILL his email shows up in ical's alert notification.  HELP!

  • Ical - email invites only?

I'm only sending email invites? I just want to send an event invitation via the small notification window and then they click accept that way? Why am I sending emails only?
    Thanks.

  • I'm having problems with excessive email usage on my iphone 4/ios 7. Just noticed that (settings/usage) it was using 900  mb. I deleted all my mail, deleted the mail account, and it still says it's using 661 mb. My ipad uses a fraction of that.

I'm having problems with excessive email usage on my iphone 4/ios 7. Just noticed that it (settings/usage) was using 900+ mb. I deleted all my mail, deleted the mail account, turned the phone off and back on, downloaded any remaining mail on the server to Outlook on my computer, and it still says it's using 661 mb. My ipad uses a fraction of that.
Background: I recently (December) bought an ipad and set up icloud for contacts and calendar, but NOT mail. My email provider is Verizon. I use computer, iphone, and ipad to check my email; eventually I download it from the server using Outlook on the computer and then delete any remaining emails from the phone and ipad. I can't find info on this problem anywhere.

    Howdy there COUGAR444,
It sounds like your iPad all of a sudden seems to be restarting out of no where. If you haven't called AppleCare yet, I would start with quitting either the app that seems to be causing the issue, or all the apps if a single doesn't seem to be the culprit.
iOS: Force an app to close
    Double-click the Home button.
Swipe left or right until you have located the app you wish to close.
Swipe the app up to close it.
When you have done that restart the device and test the issue again:
iOS: Turning off and on (restarting) and resetting
If the issue persists, backup your device to iTunes, then restore it as new and verify that it works.
How to erase your iOS device and then set it up as a new device or restore it from backups
If it does, then restore your backup to either verify it still works and the software just needed reinstalled, or isolate the issue to the backup file itself.
Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.

  • Calendar events created in iCal sending multiple email invites to invitees

    Background:
    Google Apps domain account
Lion and Snow Leopard iCal users syncing to Google Calendar
    Problem:
1.A Lion user creates a new iCal event and invites multiple people to the event.  The event is created and then an email invitation is sent to all invitees.  Each invitee receives 6 - 10 email notices about the evet.
    2. the event organizer changes the event time, multiple email notices go out to all invitees (6-10 emails each).
What is causing this problem and is there a way to fix it?

  • My IPhone 4's mailing feature does not display the toolbar at the bottom for deleting, moving, or writing emails. What is wrong with it?

My work recently decided to buy every full time employee an IPhone 4 to be used for work purposes. (I do suspect these are refurbished, but I don't think that matters) I have had no trouble with it, except for on occasion the mailing feature does not display the toolbar at the bottom for deleting, moving, or writing emails. You know what I'm talking about...that bar at the bottom of the mailbox when you open an email that you use to delete, respond, forward, move, etc. It just goes away for no reason, and then reappears for a day or two, and goes away again. It is quite annoying since I can't respond to any of my emails without getting on my work computer. If you have any suggestions, please help!

    Hi there,
You may need to force close the Mail application when this happens. The next time this happens, use the steps in the article below to coles out of the mail application.
iOS: Force an app to close

  • No email invitation for a user with Yahoo mail

I have sent an invitation to myself and someone else and it worked fine. I have another user with Yahoo mail. I sent her an invitation twice and she has never received it. I told her to check her junk mail to see if it was filtered, but she says its not their either.
    1) Is their an issue with Yahoo mail?
    2) Is their a way for me to get the invitation link as a Web Developer and email it to her manually?

I typically just set up an account for the user. I use either their server's email or a generic gmail account.
Given the process is quite a pain in the butt...  I sign up both accounts, First the new email then the  Adobe account for the end user... I accept and test the account to verify it works on my end and then I just send them the login info. They much more prefer a simple process like that.
The whole sign up / username... blahblahblah.. in the end all the Publisher or Editor needs is a login name and password. There is absolutely no need for them to be burdened with the process. There is absolutely ZERO interaction with the email account that you sign up with other than accepting the invite. InContext doesn't notify you when your page has been updated, if you have new assignents from your Publisher... NOTHING.
I saw no reason to even have the client have to go through the process. Make it simple for them.
sign up a one time disposable email
sign up an adobe account name
    Send / accept invite youself
Then a one line email to client, "To edit your site use this login name and password"
IMO.. if I am going to have to pay for this service provided to MY customer... I'm not giving anyone (Adobe included) their personal info, email, address, name..
