Mail disappearing from mailbox

One of my hotmail account keeps disappearing from iphone 6 mailbox and then returns after sometimes.
Any help on this issue is appreciated.

To add to the mystery, it seems as though it is not just the IMAP files on our server that are being impacted. This morning I copied about a dozen messages (via Mail.app) from his [email protected] inbox to a folder on his [email protected] IMAP account in order to make sure that he could use his iPhone while out and about to read those messages while out and about. A few hours later those messages on MobileMe were altered - a few disappearing for example. Meanwhile, a folder on our IMAP server ceased to exist, including a few dozen old email messages from 2009.
Maybe there is something bizarre going on with his Mail.app setup that is doing something evil with the IMAP servers? Mabye it is time to create a new account on his computer and see if using that will stop the weirdness?

  • TS3899 Saved messages disappear from mailboxes after 'update'.

Saved messages often disappear from mailboxes after an automatic 'update'. Why does that occur? If it's normal, how long are messages retained in a mailbox? Thanks

    Hi Milli,
I think the problem is that Mail tries to download them in order & if it runs into one it can't it just stops, happens when a bad/malformed email is in the chain too.
I think this may have cleared your problem though...
Not certain, but this can fix myriad Mail problems...
Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), it will try to repair your Disk Directory while the spinning radian is happening, so let it go, run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, then move these folder & file to the Desktop.
Move this Folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail/
Move this file to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
    Reboot.

  • All my mail disappeared from my folders!

Help! I am running Mail 1.2.5 on Mac OS 10.2.8. I was trying to setup a new earthlink POP account for my wife. I noticed that the socket number that earthlink gave me to use was different from what I had on my account settings. So I went in and changed it for my account. As soon as I did, all my mail disappeared from my inbox and sent. I checked my inbox.mbox file and all its contents are new and created at the same time I lost all my mail. Does anyone know ANY way to get my mail back? It's stuff that's no longer on the server. I just assumed once this stuff was in my inbox, it wasn't going to go anywhere until I deleted it. I didn't think changing one setting in my account was going to wipe anything out.

    Hey hpr3
That did help reveal some boxes I don't use thanks for the tip, but I used to have a bunch of sub accounts that I created to sort my emails into manageable groups and these have disappeared. ANy ideas that? Regards

  • Mail dissappearing from mailbox

    Hi,
Mail is disappearing from my mailbox almost instantly after opening mailbox. It is a pop account. Mail is nowhere to be found, but all is well on main PC. Developed a malware issue about a month ago around the same time I installed IOS 7, so I don't know if either may be the issue. Seem to have problems sending emails at times as well. PS. Malware issue was rectified and am using Norton 360 as security on main PC. Thanks, Peter.

  • Mail disappearing from Mac Mail - iCloud

There has been a fair few people with the same problem. I have reset my Apple Id password and this seems to have solved the problem.

smart mailboxes are not actual mailboxes. they are saved searches. if something disappears from it it means that the original was deleted from whatever mailbox it was sitting in. For example, it could be that those messages were in trash and you have your trash emptied periodically.

  • Mail disappears from Mac account inbox

    Hi folks.
I'm a relative apple newby. I have 2 mail accounts, 1 of which is an apple mail account. On 2 occasions now all the mail in my mac inbox has just disappeared. Any ideas how to retrieve them and why is this happening?
    Tks in advance

My wife has a sub-account on our MM family pack subscription and had this issue: occasionally mail on her iPhone would appear briefly in the iPhone inbox, then disappear from the list. It never showed up in Mail.app at all. (I have the master account on this family pack and haven't had this issue… knock on wood.)
I was also a recipient on some of those mails -- but if I forwarded them to her she still didn't get them. I had to copy the text out of the messages and paste into a new mail. That worked. So it seems there's something in the mail header (perhaps?) that causes this… yet the mails have not all been from the same person / address. In fact, mail from person "A" might do this disappearing thing today, yet mail from the same person "A" might work fine tomorrow. It's that sort of multi-variable, intermittent problem that's very hard to pin down.
I tried changing her password -- to guarantee that only her known clients were logging in (no lurking POP mail readers that she'd forgotten about). No effect. Then I tried turning off her junk filters, both local and online at MobileMe (thinking maybe some rule was out of control -- deleting random messages, rather than filing them as junk). No effect (other than a lot of complaints from her about junk in her inbox, of course).
Finally, she suggested that maybe it had to do with MM push services -- since it only happens on the iPhone, not on her Mac. We turned off push on her iPhone and voila! It seems to have fixed the issue.
I haven't found anyone else who's connected this with data push on the iPhone. I'd be interested if other folks who try this as a solution would see if it works for them and post results here.

  • Mail disappearing from boxes

I recall this problem from a few years back but forget the resolution. Mail in select mail boxes has simply disappeared. When I go to Library-->Mail-->etc I find the actual files and they are intact but within Mail they have disappeared.
Not sure, but this may have begun with installation of 10.4.11 (I have not installed Leopard yet).
    You help is appreciated!

You haven’t really answered the questions I asked. I need more accurate information than you’re providing.
What’s the version of Mail running on your computer? What does Mail > About Mail say?
How many mail accounts do you have in Mail > Preferences > Accounts and what type are they (POP, IMAP, .Mac)?
Report the names of the files and folders present at the first level of the ~/Library/Mail/ folder in the Finder.
In order to post the exact file names and avoid typing mistakes, proceed as follows. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. With that folder open, if you’re looking at it in View > as List mode, first collapse any expanded folders so that the Finder only shows the files and folders at the first level of ~/Library/Mail/. Now, do Edit > Select All (⌘A), then Edit > Copy (⌘C), and paste it in your reply to this post.
Before actually posting that information, edit it so that the file/folder names do not reveal any details you should keep private, e.g. replace any real username with “username” to hide your real email address. Other than that, report the file/folder names as accurately as possible.
Now, go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. With that folder open, repeat the procedure to let me see the names of the files and folders it contains. Again, you may disguise any mailbox names you wish to keep private. Be careful to not alter any suffixes, though. Which are the mailboxes affected by the problem?
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user’s home folder. That is, ~/Library is the Library folder within the user’s home folder, i.e. /Users/username/Library.

  • Mail disappears from Inbox

Email that had been downloaded and was visible/readable in my inbox all of a sudden disappears - Subject is visible, but body of message is empty with an italicized msg:
"The message from ___________ concerning “________” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
The account HAD been taken online, the mail (in most cases) had been downloaded from the server, and was read-able previously.
When I quit and reboot, sometimes it will all reappear, but sometimes it will not. Even when I installed Tiger, the problem is persisting.

    Amar,
    Welcome to the Discussions.
We will likely need much more information about this report, but first, sort your Inbox on Message Number, rather than Date. If the Date you are displaying, and sorting on, is the Date Sent, and the sending computer's date is wrongly set, they could be far down in your Inbox. If you do not display message number in your Inbox, click on View in the Menubar, place your cursor on Columns and choose Number.
If this speculation is not the situation, please tell us the history of your mailboxes -- did they exist when running Panther, and get converted?
    More info, please.

  • E-mail disappeared from Apple Mail in Mavericks

    Hello,
I think I experienced a bug yesterday in Apple Mail (I am running Mac OS X 10.9):
While organizing my e-mails, I made a new folder in my iCloud account in Apple Mail. Let's call it "Apple". Then I used the search function to find the e-mails (within my iCloud account) with a certain keyword (let's say "Pear") in order to transfer those e-mails to the "Apple" folder.
I dragged the first "Pear" conversation into the "Apple" folder. The conversation then disappeared briefly from the search results. At that moment I wanted to select the second "Pear" conversation, but in the meantime the first "Pear" conversation had been processed in the "Apple" folder and reappeared in the search results.
So I accidentally clicked again on the first "Pear" conversation and dragged it again to the "Apple" folder (even though it was already filed there) and at that moment the whole conversation disappeared. I did not manage to retrieve the messages from this conversation thereafter. I looked for them with Spotlight, in the trash, I restarted Apple Mail... Then I tried to rescue them from my iPhone but the disappearance had already synchronized to iCloud and deleted them from my phone as well.
As they are all recent messages I can't retrieve them from my Time Machine, as I only backup once a week. Furthermore, I was able to reproduce the behavior on other e-mails by using the search function and dragging an e-mail to its own folder again.
    Can anyone else reproduce this?
And does anyone know how to proceed in order to retrieve the e-mails? They were not yet on my Time Machine as they are all very recent e-mails, but they are replies to my wedding save the date message so would like them back very much....
Thanks in advance for your help!

I'm practically Amish when it comes to this stuff so I'm limited to opening and deleting (I've got a ton of e mails in my deleted account and its not there either.
    Thank you for the input

  • Sent mail disappears from Sent folder - VERY ANNOYING!

Sometimes when I send mail it does not appear in the Sent folder, or appears very briefly before disappearing.
This is really annoying because I have no copy of the email to send it again, and have to check with the recipient to see if they got it. It happens fairly regularly but I haven't noticed any particular pattern. The lost mail does not appear in Mail on my Mac or on the MobileMe web version. Sometimes it reappears later on.
Does anyone else get this problem? Any clues as to what might be going on? Seems a fairly fatal flaw for an email application.

    Hi Mike,
    Here's what I would do...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), off the HD & use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions.
In your Home folder. open Library folder, open Mail folder in that, look for the Envelope Index, and drag it to the Desktop.
Then in your Home folder. open Library folder, open Caches folder in that, look for the Mail, and drag it to the Desktop.Move Envelope Index to the Desktop in...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Mail/Envelope Index
Move this folder to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Caches/Mail
    Reboot.

  • Very old 'Sent' mail missing from mailbox - help?

I've got a question about (really) old mail in my Sent mailbox. I went today to look for some very old messages (around 9/2001), and the earliest mail available to me is from Jan 1, 2003.
Does Mail archive or delete mail after it passes a certain age?
If so, how can I find my old mail?
    Jim

Jim, I had thought that if you select Never as time after which sent mesages are deleted that they would stay saved on your hard drive.

  • Re: Re-sending of mail's from mailbox automatic / ...

    Dear All
I am facing an Issue since this morning, A mail from my sent item, mail for exchange sent box. Is getting re-send again and again. This was an attachment mail.
Please suggest what should I go
    Kind regards
    P

It is (was) a very big folder containing just over 800 emails. Its address is : Library/Mail/Mailboxes/ProjectX.mbox and it still shows up as 669MB in size so I am wondering and hoping that the emails are still to be found.
The problem is, it became too large for mail 1.3 to cope with.
You need to break it down into smaller pieces and use more mailboxes ( as sub folders) to prevent the bloat from happening again.

  • Mail disappearing from pop account

I have found that if I read a message in my in basket for my pop account, mail deletes in after about 30 mins... In options I had selected for it to clear the server once a week.... but that should have no effect on the local inboc

The mail isn't necessarily being deleted, just disappearing. Did you check in the Trash for Mail to see if it's been moved there?
If it's not in the Trash:
    Quit Mail.
Go to Home/Library/Mail and delete the Envelope Index file(s).
Restart Mail and wait for it to rebuilt the index, then see if the disappearing Mail reappears. If so, problem solved.
If it doesn't reappear and the problem continues, then I suspect your Mail preferences file is corrupt, in which case you need to do this:
    Quit Mail.
Go to Home/Library/Preferences and delete the com.apple.mail.plist file.
Restart Mail, setup your account(s) and preferences again and Mail will find your existing mailbox. Check to see if the problem goes away; if so, problem solved.

  • Mail disappeared from iPhone Inbox

I was scrolling through my Inbox folder on the iPhone and I noticed several emails have disappeared. These are emails dated prior to two months ago (for all I know everything up until that date has disappeared but I specifically remember these emails because I kept them in for reference). They are not in my Trash folder. I have a Pop account. I do not have MobileMe. I have my iPhone set to leave mail on the server indefinitely after it retrieves it. I have it set to never delete mail from the iPhone trash folder. I increased, just for the heck of it, from 50 to 75 the number of emails it's suppose to show in the Settings. No change. Any idea what happened?
