Mail doesn't do "Get Mail" on opening

Ever since I installed Snow Leopard 10.6.4, my Mail program no longer checks for new mail on opening. I have to click on 'Get Mail'. How can I restore the automatic function for getting new mail? Thanks.

My mail takes about 15 secs after start up to check the first time. You might want to check your Mail>Preferences>General Tab>Check for mail every ........
to see if it's appropriate. Mine is set to 5 minutes.
Cheers

  • Mail doesn't save sent mail on one of my email accounts.....

    Mail doesn't save sent mail on one of my email accounts. I have several accounts, but on one of them it just doesn't save any mail I send. Is there a hidden setting I've missed somewhere? I did delete the account and then reset it, but it took out all of my emails to that address so I'm loathe to do that again!

    I'm lucky enough to have two Macs running OS X 10.9 next to each other, both using the same network, and sharing a common Exchange mail server. My corporate machine (an first gen' Aluminium iMac) has both Outlook and Mail installed. My personal machine (a 13" MacBook Air) has only Mail installed.
    Neither install of Mail is guarenteed to write sent messages to the Exchange Sent folder (it might happen, it might not). Both write perfectly to other common mail servers (e.g. GMail). Outlook writes perfectly to the Exchange server, but generally functions less effectively as a mail client than Apple Mail.
    The failure to write to the Exchange server only happened after the upgrade.
    It's quite frustrating.

  • When try to get mail it says "cannot get mail, the connection to the server failed, how to fix?

    when try to get mail it says "canot get mail, the connection to ther server failed", how do I fix this issue?

    Check your username, password and account settings for that email account.
    If they all look right, then try deleting the account, and re-adding it.

  • Why does my mail keep saying "Cannot get mail"

    Synced my Yahoo account with my phone and recieved mail for a few months. About three weeks ago I recieved a message when I open my Mail app that says "Cannot Get Mail - The connection to the server failed." I also received an email that said "Recently, we have detected some unusual activity on your account and as a result, we've temporarily locked it for your protection. You may unlock your account immediately by logging in on a PC. If you have additional questions, please visit us at ___ to get the help you need. Sincerely, Your yahoo customer experience team."
    I logged in to my account on my laptop and everything seemed to fix itself and everything was fine when I get on my computer but I am still not able to get new mail through my phone. It still keeps giving me the "Cannot Get Mail" message on my phone.
    Any thoughts?

    Hello Perry0130,
    It sounds like you are getting a message that your password is incorrect after you changed the password for your email account. I would try these 3 troubleshooting steps from the following article to help troubleshoot the AOL account connection:
    iOS: Troubleshooting Mail
    http://support.apple.com/kb/ts3899
    Log in to your email provider's website to ensure that the account is active and the password is correct.
    Restart your iOS device.
    Delete the affected email account from your device.
    Tap Settings > Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
    Choose the affected email account, then tap Delete Account.
    Add your account again.
    Thank you for using Apple Support Communities.
    Take care,
    Sterling

  • Mail doesn't keep junk mail filtering and rules

    I noticed that all over sudden whenever I close mail the rules and junk mail setting in mails prefs are not kept anymore so that
    I have to enable each rule and junk mail filtering whenever I open mail again.
    Used to work fine.
    Any idea / remedy ?

    Open Disk Utility and Repair disk permissions on the First Aid tab.
    Then, Restart and boot into Recovery Mode by holding down cmd-r on restart until you see a gray screen. When the Mac boots, you will be presented with some options. Choose Disk Utility and select your Hard drive volume (Macintosh HD is the default name). Then, on the First Aid tab, click Repair Disk (not permissions).
    If that doesn't help, you could try installing the 10.8.2 combo updater from the Apple Downloads site:

  • Mail doesn't send - javax.mail.MessagingException: 250

    Hello all,
    I'm new to JavaMail. I actually started with it last night. I've successfully sent a number of messages, but I randomly get a strange exception for no apparent reason.
    If I run the exact same code several times, it will produce this error about every 5 or 6 times:
    javax.mail.MessagingException: 250 Requested mail action okay, completed
    Does anyone know what might be going on? Thanks in advance for any help you might can give.
    Here is the heart of my code:
    // Get system properties
    Properties props = System.getProperties();
    // Setup mail server
    props.put("mail.smtp.host", host1);
    // Get session
    Session session = Session.getDefaultInstance(props, null);
              session.setDebug(true);
    // Define message
    MimeMessage message = new MimeMessage(session);
    // Set the from address
    message.setFrom(new InternetAddress(fromAddress));
    // Set the to address
    message.addRecipient(Message.RecipientType.TO, new InternetAddress(toAddress));
    // Set the subject
    message.setSubject(subject);
    // Set the content
    message.setContent(content, "text/html");
    // Send message
    Transport.send(message);
    Below is the debugger output: (certain values have been removed for anonymity's sake)
    DEBUG: getProvider() returning javax.mail.Provider[TRANSPORT,smtp,com.sun.mail.smtp.SMTPTransport,Sun Microsystems, Inc]
    DEBUG SMTP: useEhlo true, useAuth false
    DEBUG: SMTPTransport trying to connect to host "xx.xx.xx.xx", port 25
    DEBUG SMTP RCVD: 220 domain.company.com ESMTP MailEnable Service, Version: 1.704-- ready at 01/14/04 14:07:27

    Verified Addresses
    [email protected]
    DEBUG SMTP SENT: DATA
    DEBUG SMTP RCVD: 250 Requested mail action okay, completed
    DEBUG SMTP SENT: QUIT

    But I am getting that code thrown as a MessageException; the message never goes through. If you look at the debugging output compared to a message that went through, the DATA transmission commands are screwed up.
    Thanks for your input, though. I think I've gotten around this by trying to resend the message. It looks like that when I get this exception the message is never sent. I have a catch that detects this exception and tries to resend up to 3 times.
    Thanks,
    floosh

    I recommend you enable message tracking, using the following cmdlet:
    Set-TransportService xxx -MessageTrackingLogEnabled $true
    And then use message tracking log to check if there is any information.

  • Mail doesn't always get my emails

    For a while now, I seem to be having a problem with Mail collecting my emails.
    Everything seems okay, emails come in and I can send, but then I'll get a call from someone asking if I have seen an email that they sent a few hours previously. I check "Mail" and although sunsequent emails have hit my box, older ones haven't.
    I then go into "Mailbox" take all accounts offline, wait a few seconds and then take all account back online.
    Low and behold I then quite often get several emails from earlier in the day that for some reason didnt hit my in box.
    Any ideas of why this might be and what I can do to maybe stop this problem?

    What version of OS X are you running?

  • Accidently Deleted Mail Icon & can't get mail back

    Hi There, Mistakenly all the icons on the desktop have been deleted except the hard drive icon. Now I lost the ability to access my mail program. Had an icon in the dock but it didn't work. It didn't bounce or anything. I tryed to drag it to the desk top & it let me, then it disappeared from the screen. Also lost my calculator short cut on the desktop. Please, any suggestions, I would be grateful.

    WireMan1 wrote:
    That's what I figured about the mail. I've also found that I deleted the calculator & I think a pic decompression program for opening pics. But that's minor.
    I am happy to report having just check the HD & 20.7 GB is free. I'm in the middle of backing up 992 pics to disc & getting them off the HD to free up even more so it looks like I'm good to go for a reinstall & do an archive.
    That sounds like plenty - over 50% free gives the OS plenty of room to play with.
    I found out also why I think mail & the other things got deleted. I found that I never made an alias of mail or calc & dragged them from applications to the desktop. I one time before deleted the icon for mail & I dragged it from the Apps folder to get it working again hence when the desktop was accidently deleted there went the mail & calc.
    Oops! This is also bad because the apps may not get updated when they should by system/security updates. It's generally a bad idea to move the Apple applications even into sub-directories of /Applications, never mind out of the folder altogether. One thing you might consider is doing your everyday stuff as a standard user rather than as an admin. That should prevent you doing things like that by accident as you'd have to authenticate first. I work from an administrator account because I would just find it too annoying otherwise but there are definite downsides to doing so, including security implications. (There are some things you can do to mitigate the security risks but unless you really need administrative access a lot, you might prefer to run as a standard user.) It also means you have a "clean" account for running Software Update which may be an advantage.
    I'm going to try the reinstall & I'll report back the results.
    Sounds good! It is still a good idea to backup files you can't afford to lose - even if you plan to archive & install and choose the options to preserve user settings etc., something can always go wrong. But you know that, right?
    You sure you don't work for mac? You sound like your very well versed on this stuff.
    If I am working for Apple, I sure want to know why they aren't paying me! I'm not especially knowledgeable - there are lots of people on these forums who not only have training (which I lack completely) but vastly more experience. Now doesn't that inspire you with confidence in my advice?!
    Can't thank you enough for the back & forth Dialog.
    You're very welcome - and thanks for saying so and offering to report back. I like to know whether something I've suggested has helped or not.

  • Mail crash, now hangs getting mail

    G'day,
    I'm running a dual 1.8GHz G5 Powermac, with 10.5.8, mail 3.6.
    I opened Mail, and it started to get some new messages (about 20 something), but then my computer froze hard - no response to keyboard/mouse.
    I restarted, and re opened Mail. It told me there was an error, and to quit to fix it.
    When I re-opened Mail again, it imported the 24,000ish emails, then tried to retrieve 200+ new messages... It stalls during this process on about message 59. Can't quit, can't tell it to stop getting messages... have to force quit.
    Any ideas how to fix this?

    The mailboxes may be corrupt, but it sounds like you are on the right track.
    Try this.
    Pull the ~/library/mail folder to desktop
    Make sure the mail program is not running
    Delete the ~/library/preferenes/com.apple.mail.plist
    Relaunch mail
    Setup account
    If all the messages do not come in from the mail server then,
    Select file>import and import the mail folder from the desktop.
    Hopefully the missing messages will be in the imported section of mail.
    Let us know if this works for you.

  • Sender mail adapter : How to get mail in both payload AND attachment ?

    Hi,
    I need to get the mail content both ways every time :
    -In attachment in order to store it later.
    -In payload in order to use it.
    I don't see any way to do this. Any ideas ?
    JB.

    Thanks for that fast answer.
    But I have no problems with reading the payload content or accessing any attachment.
    My issue is the following : I need to push the payload content as an attachment before sending the message to the Abap Proxy.
    Scenario is the following :
    Mail box --> PI --> ECC/Abap Proxy.
    I already store all the attachment during the proxy execution, I would like to be able to do the same withe the mail content.

  • Upgraded Mail Crashes Everytime on Get Mail and Send ?

    I just upgraded from 10.2 to Tiger 10.4.6. Everything loaded great except Mail. It opens fine but crashes every time I try to send or receive. Any ideas?

    Nidan,
    Welcome to Apple Discussions.
    One of the easiest troubleshooting steps that you can take is to Quit Mail, and move the com.apple.mail.plist file from your Macintosh HD/Users/yourusername/Library/Preferences Folder to your Desktop. Then log out/in or restart and let us know what happens.

  • Quitting Mail doesn't empty the mail trash

    Running latest version of Yosemite.  Basically, I have the mailbox behaviors set to empty the trash when quitting mail.  Problem is, it never does.  I have to manually select empty trash every time.  Any way to fix this?
    BTW, I have multiple mail accounts, all POP using the same server settings.

    Tried that, mail still sitting in the trash.  Only way it seems to empty the trash is if I manually tell it to.  BTW, this happens on two different computers running the same OS.  Both computers have multiple mail accounts (i.e. multiple email accounts on the same mail server).
