Mail doesn't open any message window unless I restart Mail

Hey guys,
This is really killing me here. Every once in a while when I click "new message" or "reply" nothing happens! If I quit mail and restart it - I find blank messages in the drafts folder - one empty message for every time I clicked "new message" or "reply" before quitting. Is there some kind of reset that will kill this sucker? I hope so. Really driving me nuts!
Appreciate any help!
Alex

Hi all,
The exact same this is happening to me. After I restart mail, the reply message opens, once for each time I hit reply. Same with new message. Also, I tried opening a note I had been working on for weeks, and it didn't open, so I restarted, closed the note (along with 10 other reply windows), and the note didn't save?
Also, mail works fine for awhile, then begins doing this.
Very frustrating, thanks for any help.

mail crashes on opening any message with attachments
this started happening about a month ago. I thought the problem was that there was too much mail in the program -
so, I acquired a program called MAILSTEWARD (which I recommend!) and it stores & saves my old mail.
I reset MAIL, so it kept my address and smart folder instructions etc, but all the mail itself was gone (I forget how I did that - I probably will try it again...)
for a few weeks, everything was fine - I could open an eMail with an attachment, and it worked.
but now it started crashing again everytime there's an attachment!
don't know what to do - there's only a month's worth of mail in there (which I should clean out anyhow) - but it seems to me that's not too much...
    thanks!
    w

that's it - I ran the updater - and I believe I have been able to use it all day without the program crashing when it encounters an attachment.
one goofy thing I noticed, for the first time, there appear to be two applications folders on my start-up drive (1) in my user folder (2) in the "main" hard drive folder.
MAIL is in both - I believe the "main" one was updated; when I turned on the "user" MAIL it crashed when I opened an eMail with an attachment; when I opened the same eMail with the "main" mail there was no problem.
now what does this tell us?
    thanks again!

  • Mail doesn't open any windows

When I go into imail - I can see and read the contents in my inbox/outbox, but cannot open any of the messages.
Likewise I cannot open a window to write a new mail. Infact I can't open any window at all, including the Mail / About Mail pop up window.
This suddenly happened this morning shortly after sending a mail.
    Anyone had a similar problem?
Or know how to rectify it?
    Yours, bemused in Belgium

Create a New User Account on your Mac, and as that New User open Mail and if it does crash set up one email account as a test. If a POP account, set it to leave messages in the server after download.
See the following if not familiar with adding a new user account:
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?path=Mac/10.5/en/8235.html
This will test the app itself vs your current User Account.

  • Clicking email-links doesn't open "new message" window

    Hi,
When I click email links, safari doesn't take me to the "new message" window. It activates safari: the program comes on in the dock and the text next to the apple logo changes to "mail", but I don't get the "new message" window

You're welcome. Glad to have helped.

  • Mail crashes when opening ANY message

Having just upgraded to Leopard, I'm dismayed to find the Mail app unusable. Every time I click on a message to view it, the app terminates... The report is

    -[MessageContentController _fetchContentsForMessage:fromStore:withViewingState:]
    -[iToolsAccount _synchronizeAccountWithServerWithUserInput:]

    * Terminating app due to uncaught exception 'NSInternalInconsistencyException', reason: 'trying to set a non-ToDo MailboxUid for a ToDo. The MailboxUid for a ToDo must be a ToDosMailboxUid'
I guess that Todo's in Mail are a new "feature".
Anybody know how to clear this inconistency. Or at least switch off the Todo feature?!
    Thanks

Triple-click the line below on this page to select it:
    ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Open
from the contextual menu.* A folder window should open. From that folder, move the following files to the Desktop:
    SmartMailboxesLocalProperties.plist
    SyncedSmartMailboxes.plist
Test. If Mail now works, delete the files you moved and recreate your smart mailboxes, if necessary. Otherwise put the files back where they were, overwriting any that may have created in their place.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C). In the Finder, select
    Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar, paste into the box that opens (command-V). You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.

  • Lion Mail doesn't open a window

I keep finding unwelcome changes in Lion, especially Mail. Now I notice that Mail doesn't open a window if I bring Mail to the front and no window is already open, and if a window is minimized it won't open it either as it used to do in Leopard. I have to go to the added trouble of going to File > New Viewer Window to get the regular window or click on the window in the dock. I don't understand why this was changed, it just makes more trouble.
I know people complain about changes, but I just need to know if there's a way, maybe with the help of Terminal, to bring it back to where it was?
    (I am in classic layout)

    No problems,
Its caught me out before too.

  • Apple mail will not open any windows for me.

I have a mid 2009 mac book pro. I upgraded to Mavericks and now my apple mail will not display any screens (windows). When I open it, it will bounce once in the dock then show the nav bar at the top, however most everything like send new mail is grey. I have tried loading upgrades but they won't load to my HD for some reason or another and am at a loss.

Try holding down the shift key when opening Mail.

  • My email app. stopped working.  It doesn't open any accounts

My email app. stopped working.  It doesn't open any accounts.  It used to but just opens up a blank screen.  Any suggestions?
Also Safari doesn't open up anything either, but used to.

    try restarting the app
Normally double tap the 'home' button
all the active apps will pop up at the bottom
    hold an app
once the '-' symbol appears release then find the 'hung' apps by scrolling and click the '-' symbol
    click the home key
then click on mail/safari and see if that helps

  • I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail.  There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software.  I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. Help!

I have just agreed to software updates on my imac and now can't open my mail.  There is a message saying this version of mail isn't compatible with this latest software.  I have located the updated mail in the applications folder but it won't open. I don't have the original operating software disk.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

Your reply suggests that you have moved Mail to a different location, which (as I said) will prevent it from being properly updated. You cannot use Mail 4.5 with any recent version of Mac OS X. Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) included Mail 5 and Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion) includes Mail 6. I'm assuming that you have either Lion or Mountain Lion, but if that is incorrect, you will need to provide that information.
At this point, you will need to reinstall your system. Hold down command-R at startup and reinstall the system right on top of the old one. This should not disturb any of your documents or applications, though you should have backups beforehand in case something goes wrong. And at this point, with your system in an uncertain state (I don't entirely know what you have done to it), something could go wrong.
You will also want to delete the old copy of Mail 4.5, wherever that is. You can't use it.
In the future, do not move any of the preinstalled applications. Leave them where they are.

  • ITunes doesn't open any more

My iTunes doesn't open any more all of a sudden, though Task Manager has listed it in "Processes". Quicktime and everything else works, though.
I've tried de-installing and re-installing serveral times.. Even older Versions (iTunes 10.5) won't work.
Can you tell me what to do?
Fyi: I'm using Windows 7 and iTunes version 10.7.
    Thank you!

  • TS2537 mail doesn't open from dock on my iMac; I have to go through Yahoo to get mail

Yes. And then I try to open (or relaunch), and the light comes on, but no window opens

  • Mail doesn't open. and NO dialogue box!

    Hello!
This is the first time this has ever happened to me. Mail doesn't open. The icon in the dock jumps up once but that's it. No dialogue box or any other warnings. I even tried to open it from the Finder but that doesn't work either.
I don't know what else to do as I can't even look at any preferences nor do I want to delete the programme as I need my emails (i use it for work so can't loose all those emails, if I haven't done that already).
Does anybody have an idea what else I can try? Thanks!

This is the strangest thing ever. I created a new user account along with a password but it doesnt let me log in as that user. As a matter of fact I can't even log in under any of my users (not even the "guest" where there is no password required!) and yes, I do know the passwords.
Therefore couldn't check whether Mail opens in another account.

  • Mail doesn't open from dock

mail doesn't open from dock, after I installed mavericks. Is that a "feature"?

Great news, in that case this is user a specific issue which we should be able to resolve by moving one plist.
*Note read the instructions carefully and ask quesitons if you don't understand something.
First > Create a folder on your desktop so we can backup the plist that we removing that was it can be put back if anything...  Call it Dock Plist
Second > Open a Finder windows > up on the menu bar click on "Go" > Hold the option key on your keyboard and you should see Library come up click on it... This will place you inside your user specific Library folder aka ~/Library...
Third > Go into Preferences folder > locate a file called com.apple.dock.plist and drap/drop into the folder you created on the desktop
Fourth > Click on the Apple (top left) > Logout...  Log back and test it.  The system automatically creates a new com.apple.dock.plist with no settings so your dock will go back to default, test mail and see if that resolves the issue.
