[SOLVED] GIMP doesn't open .jpg files
Hello, I installed GIMP with pacman on my arch x64 and noticed it can neither open .jpg files nor save images as .jpg. First thing that came to my mind is that some codec or plugin is missing but I can't find anything. And as my image viewer is able to open .jpg files I think, it's a gimp specific problem. Hope you can help me.

IPhoto doesn't recognize .jpg files and can't open it. What may I do now?
iPhoto doesn't recognize .jpg files and can't open it. What may I do?
a common problem is that you don't have permission to upload those files, but it is an easy fix
1) Finder
2) Users(it should have the account name on it)
3) pictures
4) right click on iphoto library then click info
5 on the bottom of the new window there should be a sharing and permissions tab
6) make sure you have permission to read & write
The only other problem I can think is that you are having problems with hard drive space. if so you might want to clean up your hard drive to free up some space. please let me know if that worked for you. -
Error message: "Dreamweaver can't open .jpg files"
I'm using DW 8, and I have installed the 8.0.2 update. I'm
having trouble inserting certain JPG images into a site. I get an
error message pop-up that states "Dreamweaver can't open .jpg
files". It will allow me to insert some jpg files, but not all of
them. I've tried drag & drop and going through the Insert menu.
The files are not large at all. Doesn't appear to be any problem
with png's or gif's. It's incredibly frustrating. Anyone have any
suggestions? TIA.> why was i taught that all my web images need
> to be in 72dpi if it doesn't really matter?
most people suggest 72 because it was an old standard with
the early
macintosh DTP programs. For web use it's easier to
standardize on it because
when you make an image, you have to put ~some~ number in the
resolution box
and it might as well be 72 as any other number. It simplifies
moving image
files around in different applications if they are all the
same resolution.
For display in a browser, these will all have the same file
size and display
size in a web page:
600x600 pixels at 1dpi
600x600 pixels at 72dpi
600x600 pixels at 6000dpi
It's when they are used in other applications or when a
direct url like
/photos/1.jpg is printed out that they may display in the
resolution, not
the pixel dimension.
I came across a page once where the designer always saved his
images with a
resolution of 6000 dpi or some other odd number because he
thought that if
people dragged the image off the page to save it- most of
them wouldn't be
able to resize it. or some other idiot reason maybe.

Lion Mail doesn't open a window
I keep finding unwelcome changes in Lion, especially Mail. Now I notice that Mail doesn't open a window if I bring Mail to the front and no window is already open, and if a window is minimized it won't open it either as it used to do in Leopard. I have to go to the added trouble of going to File > New Viewer Window to get the regular window or click on the window in the dock. I don't understand why this was changed, it just makes more trouble.
I know people complain about changes, but I just need to know if there's a way, maybe with the help of Terminal, to bring it back to where it was?
(I am in classic layout)No problems,
Its caught me out before too. -
For some reason I cannot open jpg files from a co-worker who previosuly sent files without any problems. I just bought a MacBook Air with OS X Lion & Preview won't open the files. She sent the same files to another co-worker who opened without any issues? Help! Anyone have any suggestions after having the same or similar problem?
I don't have an answer as to why Preview doesn't want to cooperate, but if you only need to view the jpeg's and do nothing else to them, you can use two FREE applications that come already pre-installed on your Mac... Those are iPhoto and Safari. Just drag and drop over the application icon.
You can also find several FREE photo viewers in the APP STORE. -
mail doesn't open from dock, after I installed mavericks. Is that a "feature"?
Great news, in that case this is user a specific issue which we should be able to resolve by moving one plist.
*Note read the instructions carefully and ask quesitons if you don't understand something.
First > Create a folder on your desktop so we can backup the plist that we removing that was it can be put back if anything... Call it Dock Plist
Second > Open a Finder windows > up on the menu bar click on "Go" > Hold the option key on your keyboard and you should see Library come up click on it... This will place you inside your user specific Library folder aka ~/Library...
Third > Go into Preferences folder > locate a file called com.apple.dock.plist and drap/drop into the folder you created on the desktop
Fourth > Click on the Apple (top left) > Logout... Log back and test it. The system automatically creates a new com.apple.dock.plist with no settings so your dock will go back to default, test mail and see if that resolves the issue. -
Can not open jpg files.
They works on Windows
Whats the problem? Before anyone can help, they need information to work with. Basic stuff:
- What version of iPhoto.
- What version of the Operating System.
- Details. What were you doing when the problem arose?
- Did it ever work properly?
- Are there error messages?
- What steps have you tried already to solve the issue.
Anything else you can think of that might allow someone else to understand your issue.
With this kind of information somebody can develop a starting point for troubleshooting the issue.
Posts that consist of "iPhoto doesn't work. Help" or "iPhoto won't print" or "Suddenly I have no photos!!!!!!!!!!" mean that any helper is simply guessing. With information, s/he may be able to get your issue resolved sooner. -

I would post in the Illustrator forum here http://forums.adobe.com/community/illustrator or the Dreamweaver forum here http://forums.adobe.com/community/dreamweaver. One of these product forums will be able to help.

Quicktime doesn't open AVI file with Perian installed
I have installed Perian but Quicktime X doesn't open AVI files for a week. I have repaired permissions. But Quicktime only plays the AVI file if I reboot the Mac. VLC always plays the file. The AVI codec is XVID. Quicktime doesn't play other formats such as FLV. I have deleted .plist files, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist. I have found other files(com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0GH3f31, com.apple.QuickTimePlayerX.plist.0h9MBzV...) that I deleted also. Any idea? Thanks
And now ... surprisingly I view AVI files in Quicktime without Perian.
QT has very limited AVI support (file type and a few older codecs) built in. Most common codecs use by Windows users, however, require the additional support provided by Perian. If the AVI files are now playing in QT without Perian, then simply check the Inspector, Properties, or Info window to see which codecs are in your AVI file and you should be able to tell if they are among those supported "natively" by QT. Also note that this regaining of the ability to play your files may indicate a component conflict of some sort may have existed previously. -
Error Opening JPG files in CS 5.1
As the title explains. Can't open jpg files in CS 5.1 I have about 100 of these files that I access for a part time gig that are stored in the cloud. Whenever I attempt to open these files I get the following error message which is attached.
Thanks and I hope I get some assistance. That's not really an option seeing as though there are hundreds of files that I access on a daily basis. Could it be possible that that something is wrong with my settings? Other people can open them in my company

AOL mail doesn't send .doc-files with Firefox
When using Firefox AOL Mail doesn't send .doc-files. Instead a corrupted file with a different size is sent. Any other file type works aswell as sending .doc-files with other browsers works...
I'm getting a similar problem. Snow Leopard Mail for me seems to be choking on large attachments - sending them, forwarding them, or even moving them from one IMAP folder to another.
My mails are getting through, but it takes a long time and they are dragging the whole system to a crawl in the process. -

Mail doesn't open. and NO dialogue box!
Hello!
This is the first time this has ever happened to me. Mail doesn't open. The icon in the dock jumps up once but that's it. No dialogue box or any other warnings. I even tried to open it from the Finder but that doesn't work either.
I don't know what else to do as I can't even look at any preferences nor do I want to delete the programme as I need my emails (i use it for work so can't loose all those emails, if I haven't done that already).
Does anybody have an idea what else I can try? Thanks! This is the strangest thing ever. I created a new user account along with a password but it doesnt let me log in as that user. As a matter of fact I can't even log in under any of my users (not even the "guest" where there is no password required!) and yes, I do know the passwords.
Therefore couldn't check whether Mail opens in another account. -
