Mail eating memory, mail slowing my ibook
It's been 2 times today: mail.app shows a RSIZE of 250M+ and a VSIZE of 1Go+
That memory leak is AWFULLY slowing down my ibook (sorry for the capitals, but I really mean it: it took me 15min. to bring safari and this forum)
Is there anything I can do before Apple fixes this bug?
In the last couple of days, I've had the same problem on my powerbook. After loading, Mail.app eats all the available memory, slowly at first, then increasingly quickly, until its real size gets up to 1 GB, with a VSIZE of 1.3 GB, nearly all of which is inactive.
It still 'works' in terms of sending and receiving mail, but writing emails is very very slow and unusable - takes seconds to type every character. It rarely quits without being forced, and I'm reduced to loading it, checking mail quickly, then (force) quitting again, so that it won't slow everything else down.
Any ideas?

Mail eats final mails text when you change account or sign
Waiting for an update since 10.4 introduced this annoying bug and nothing at all. Each new System update leave this bug there as a no importance or very rare bug. But I can assure you I have twitched myself every time I needed to rewrite near the whole letter just after at the end of it I needed to change the account or the sign usign the popup menus :((
Does anyone knows this bug or the way Apple can be notified about it?1. From the Admin Console, open the Expert Features tab.
2. In the left-hand navigation pane, choose Email Alerts.
3. Select the root category or any other category or forum.
4. Enable and set e-mail alerts for the category or forum selected.
5. Manage the templates for e-mail alerts.

Mr.Chowdary -
I have OS X 10.8.5. All is well, but my mail program is very slow. It takes way too long to open/close/delete an email. ??any thoughts on how to fix?
Quit Mail if it's running. This procedure will have no effect unless you quit Mail when you begin.
Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
sqlite3 L*/C*/*.mail/*/L*/*/*/C*.db vacuum; sqlite3 L*/M*/*/*/E*ex vacuum
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C.
Launch the built-in Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
You should see a new line ending in a dollar sign ($) appear below what you entered. If not, press return. You can then quit Terminal and relaunch Mail. Test. -
Download attachment in Mail application is super slow
Whenever I download attachment from an email in Mail application, it super slow. It's 10 times slower than when I download the same attachment from Safari. So it means not because of the internet speed.
I don't know you guys have the same problem like me.
And another quesion, can we configure Mail app to automatically download attachment. Now everytime I receive an email, I have to open email and click on attachment to download it. It waste time to sit there and wait.I have the exact same problem. 10 times slower download of attachements than if I simply login to webmail and download that way.
Anyone know a solution? -
Mail eats CPU for no apparent reason
Recently, Mail on my G4 iMac has taken to suddenly using up all the spare CPU cycles. There is no obvious reason for this behaviour. It seems to happen when Mail is sitting quietly in the background doing nothing in particular. If I quit Mail and start it up, it behaves itself for a while (a few hours/a day or two) then suddenly starts doing it again.
I'm using Mail 3.6, by the way, as that seems to be the latest version available for this machine. I have two e-mail ISPs which Mail checks every five minutes, and it doesn't seem to have any problems doing so.
Has anyone else seen behaviour like this? Any suggestions as to how to stop it would be very welcome!I did a bit more digging on this and fond several references to a possible issue with iSync. As it happens, I had noticed syncclient appearing to do things when I didn't expect it to (I have automatic MobileMe sync turned off on my iMac as it slows the machine down too much). The solution suggested on this thread http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2036196 seems to have done the trick.
I did have to tell MobileMe sync how to sort itself out the next time I ran a manual sync, but Mail seems to have been behaving itself fine since I cleared the sync history.
As an aside: if anyone knows how to stop MobileMe sync from running every 15 minutes regardless of the setting in System Preferences, I love to know about it! -
Mail on Yosemite: crashes, slow and buggy.
I have already posted my experiences with Mail on Yosemite on several threads, and now I have decided to open my own thread about it, with the hope that Apple sees how many users are having the same kind of issues, and hopefully will address them in the next OS update.
Keep in mind that I am a web computer programmer, therefore I know, and I am sure that there is something buggy with this new version of Mail compared with the one on Mavericks, and I am sure Apple can fix it.
Here are the major flaws I have experienced:
1. Mail sometimes crashes, even when just typing a message which gives me frustration and madness!
2. Mail fetching and sending is terribly slow. New mail appears inside Mail after several minutes it is already appeared on my iPhone.
3. Updating the mailbox counters take forever. I have to literally leave Mail open for 15-20 minutes to see slowly updating the mailbox counters (!!!) That creates a lot of confusion from my part.
4. Slow deletion: If I delete 10 messages in a row inside a mailbox, then I go working on a different mailbox, and then get back to the previous one, the just deleted messages are back there! And they are getting "slowly" deleted after several minutes (10-20 minutes?)...
Well, it's impossible to work this way, it is just a mess. Managing email with my iPhone is much easier, which is insane.
The Activity window is always "working" with several processes going on all the time, no idea if that's normal or what. Why in the heck Mail has to keep synching a mailbox with inside just 20 emails for over 20 minutes??!!
I really hope Apple is going to release an update to fix all these issues, otherwise I will have to downgrade back to Mavericks. For me, actually, moving from Mavericks to Yosemite has been a big downgrade of performance, and a waste of time (hours!!) to figure out issues like this one.
My computer is a 2009 Mac Pro Quad-Core Xeon with 32GB ram, which has an insane amount of ram to have crashes and slowness with a simple program like Mail (!!) I have already tried everything: cleaning caches, regular OS maintenance, cleaning, rebooting in safe mode, reconfiguring Mail from scratch, etc. Something is wrong with the program itself.
If anyone is experiencing this kind of issues, please, post your experience on this thread, so we can have more chances to be noticed by Apple (if they ever look at these forums...)
Thanks in advance, and let's keep Mac OS improving!!
Best,
Fab.Thank you Linc for your idea of posting logs, here they are:

When I click on Yahoo in FF, the page is slow to load. When it does, the e-mail is even slower to load. When it does load and I click on an e-mail, the e-mail does not open. Any suggestions? If I delete FF and reinstall it, will I lose all the information in FF (e.g. Book marks or preferences)? Thanks in advance for your help.
HI afirst,
Just in case [[Back up and restore information in Firefox profiles]], but before that you can clear the cache for a specific site in the about:permissions page.
Select Yahoo mail on this page and forget the site. This will remove cookies and active logins for mail. Please then restart Firefox and relogin to Yahoo mail.

MAIL IS EATING SENT MAIL AND SENDING DUPLICATES
hi-
i've been having MAJOR mail issues. the biggest are .mac mail is eating my sent email - they just disappear into thin air - never to be found again.
and i've noticed there are duplicates - 2, and sometime 4 of the same email sent out.
i am using the mail.mac.com as incoming and outgoing server. i have sbc global as my dsl. i've called applecare numerous times and sbc. they cannot figure it out.
can someone please help me sort this out?
thanks so much
raineywell...that's the tricky part. sometimes it eats my mail. and other times it sends out duplicates.
it tends to do this if i've just sent an email and i go into my sent box shortly after, all of a sudden it'll show up and then poof - disappear.
other times if i'm not looking at what i've sent i'll ocassionally look in sent box and notice there are 2, 3 and sometime 4 dups sent to the same person.
these are just 2 problems of the MANY that i've had with email.
also when i have a disc in my drive (say scrabble game) my minimize options disappear...
i'm all jacked up.
any advice on any is greatly appreciated.
a friend thinks my box is corupted b/c i started it when i was still operating on panther and when i upgraded to tiger problems started.
thanks

Yosemite OS X Mail using exchange is slow
Mail is running extremely slow connecting to exchange.
Overnight, it quite working all together and would not download new messages.
I rebuilt the mail box and it's working again but is very slow.
Any suggestions for how to help this new version of Mail play better with Exchange?
Mail: Version 8.0
Yosemite: 10.10
Late 2012 MBPro/RetinaI bumped into this problem too, and found a work around. Upon retrieving mail from our Exchange email server, I would experience long delays whenever clicking to view a new email in the list. In my set up, I have a mac with a wired ethernet connection. After Yosemite installed, it created a wireless connection which was presumably used for the new "Continuity" features. After diddling around with various different solutions that didn't work, I decided to disable the wireless network yosemite created.. thinking the new continuity support may be the culprit. After disabling this extra wireless connection,... my email delays went away... no more exchange issues.
Of further interest... I had zero performance problems with other POP or IMAP clients... just exchange.
No idea if this will help you, nor why it helped me in fact, but it did completely resolve it for me. Hope it helps someone else... -
How to get greater log detail from Mail.app in Lion (slow attachment caching)
I have an IMAP account, hosted by FuseMail, that is taking an extraordinary amount of time to catch attachments. I would say it is taking upwards of 10 minutes to cache one attachment. This is causing a side-effect in mail that it keeps spawning new threads for "Fetching new mail" which eventually makes Mail.app thread-bound and it stops responding (see image below of an example of what happened over night when I wasn't there to kill the treads).
I would like to see a more detailed trascript of the connection with this IMAP server to see if the delay is with the server or with my client. However, I have been unable to capture what I'd like to see:
If I use the Connection Doctor, turn off all other accounts and look at "Show Detail", I can see some log entries for READS and WRITES (FETCH and PEEK) but it's still difficult to see what's happening between those steps:

I just can't see enough to figure out if the problem is on my end or the FuseMail end. I have been looking around trying to figure out how to increase the debug level without much luck.
I found this about the sqlite3 db but the Envelope file is not in the same place anymore:
http://www.macworld.com/article/56673/2007/03/mailfix.html
I also played around with the defaults but could not find anything specific to the connection/transfer/caching protocols:
http://hints.macworld.com/article.php?story=2004101603285984
I also tried the "Turn on Logging" Mail script:
http://macs.about.com/od/usingyourmac/ss/Troubleshooting-Apple-Mail-Using-Apple- Mails-Troubleshooting-Tools_3.htm
but if it is turning anything on in the Console, I can't see it.
Any suggestons?I have the same problem, some photos are not loaded completely and partly grey. This occurs only in Mail.app but not in the web interface of the email provider. Did you find a solution, Florian? Does somebody else have a suggestion?
Greetings from Finland -
Mac Mail with Optimum VERY slow
Over the past few days downloading e-mail from Optimum On Line using Mac Mail has become VERY sluggish.
A 4 MB e-mail with an attachment takes over 7 minutes to download!!!
Yesterday it took over 30 minutes to download about 8 e-mails.
Outgoing mail and internet are fine, just a problem with incoming mail.
I contacted Optimum several times the last few days.
We checked the settings, by-passed my Airport Extreme and replaced the modem.
The problem still exists.
Optimum says they checked my signal and everything looks good and they have no idea what the problem is.
It is also happening on my wife's 2 week old iMac as well.
Anyone else experiencing this problem.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.HI John,
Try a different Airport channel.
Open AirPort Utility, located in the Utilities folder in the Applications folder on a computer using Mac OS X.
Select the device you’re setting up, and then click Manual Setup. Enter the base station password if necessary
Click AirPort in the toolbar, and then click Wireless.
Choose a new channel from the Channel pop-up menu.
If that doesn't help, go to /Library/Preferences/System Configuration and move these files to the Trash.
com.apple.airport.preferences.plist
com.applen.nat.plist
com.apple.network.identification.plist
Restart your Mac(s).

Using mail or an other application?
Same problem on different mailbox?
1- try an other mail client
2- try with different mailbox (google, icloud, ...)
This can be a temporary problem from your mailserver ... wait 2 or 3 hours ... -
Hi,
as yoi can read I have a MacBook and OS X 10.5.7. This software it's going mad because, if I ope Activity monitor or a finder window ROM memory is "eaten":
1) I have 1,7 GB of free space b ut after 6 hours of work (open Safari, iTunes, Mail, Preview) it goes to 200 MB and continue to go down till to "no enough space on startup disk
2) RAM memory is "eaten" when I open Safari, more or less 100÷230 MB RAM, the problem is that Dashboard client too eats memory. But if I close Safri I gain that memory, if I close dashboard client (from activity monitor) it opens again and goes again to 100 MB of RAM. Another problem is, sometimes, from WindowsServer, that can't be closed so I have to reboot my Mac in order to have sufficient memory to work.
I made two questions and I found you very professional, pleas would you mind help me?
Thank you
Antoniomortain wrote:
I have two kind of memory: RAM and ROM.
I have, now 2,3 GB of free space (ROM) but during the normal functioning of MAC it goes to 300 MB, magically.
You're not using the common terms here. Perhaps it's the language/translation.
I think that what you're calling ROM is disk space. Go to Activity Monitor and click the +Disk Usage+ tab towards the bottom. That will show you Disk Space, both "Space utilized" and "Space free" (in the English version), and measured in GB. Please report what both numbers show. Is the "Space free" what you're referring to when you say you have 2.3 GB of ROM?
If so, that's not enough. As per my previous post, you must get more space on your internal HD, and you need to do it quickly. Do not worry about anything else just yet.
If not, please specify where you see this figure.
I have 1GB of RAM, but windowsserver and dashboard client get it down to a very low level and Safari (from Activity monitor I monitor it) after 5÷7 minutes opened uses 250 MB of RAM. I can close Safari in order to gain that memory but if I close windowsserver the initial desktop is shown instead dashboard client, even if I close it, it reopens.
Now click the +System Memory+ tab. It shows several categories of memory (RAM). At the right is a circular display, underneath that is the total RAM you have. Tell us what that shows.
For the moment, we're concerned with the total of Free and Inactive in the left-hand column. It will change a bit every few seconds; but tell us roughly what the total of Free and Inactive is when you first start up, and how it changes when you start Safari, or other things. -
Troubleshooting Mail using the Mail.crash.log file and TN2123 CrashReporter
This morning, for apparently no reason at all, Mail began to consistently crash each time I attempted to send or reply to a message. By observing what occured in mail, opening the crash log [mail.crash.log] located here…
Macintosh HD:Users:<username>:Library:Logs:CrashReporter
…and parsing the information with the help of the Apple Developer Technical Note linked below, I was able to quickly determine that my last action just prior to sending the message—appending a signature to it—resulted in the application crashing. Simply by deleting the existing signature and recreating it, I was able to resolve the problem in only a matter of minutes.
This demonstrates how useful crash logs can be, and why they should likely be the very first place you look for an indication of trouble when an application unexpectely quits.
Here is a very short, relevent section of my Mail crash log which you can examine using the instructions linked below:

This is the most significant section of a very long, multi-threaded log, because it shows the detail of the thread which crashed, the actual step at which it crashed, and the particular crash type: in this case, a EXCBADACCESS (0x0001) - KERNPROTECTIONFAILURE, indicating an attempt to write to a read-only memory location.

How do I get Mail to download mail and delete it from the server?
I don't think Mail is downloading my E-mail from my server to my computer.
My main e-mail account is set up as a POP mail account and I have it set to: "remove a copy from server after receiving message: right away"
I have a couple of years of e-mail on my computer and it was getting slower and slower to access many of e-mails. I checked the e-mail account on the server and the file size was huge. I browsed the file and there was a ton of old e-mails in my mail file. I figured this is what was making it really slow to access my e-mails. So I went the the setting in Mail under the advanced tab that says: Remove Now. I clicked it and it took a long long time but then my mail file on the server was emptied. But when I went to access the message in the Mail program I would get this message in italics in the body of the e-mail:
The message from Kathleen <[email protected]> concerning “Re: Tivo” has not been downloaded from the server. You need to take this account online in order to download it."
I was online and all my e-mail messages had this exact message (with the name and subject different). Why is that. I thought POP meant it was suppose to download to my computer?Verify/repair your disk first (not just permissions), as described here:
The Repair functions of Disk Utility: what's it all about?
After having fixed all filesystem issues, if any, and making sure that there's enough space available on the startup disk (a few GB, plus the space needed to make a backup copy of the Mail folder), try this:
1. Quit Mail if it's running.
2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/. Make a backup copy of this folder, just in case something goes wrong -- e.g. by dragging it to the Desktop while holding the Option (Alt) key down.
3. Locate Envelope Index and move it to the Trash. If you see an Envelope Index-journal file there, delete it as well.
4. Open Mail. It will tell you that your mail needs to be "imported". Click Continue and Mail will proceed to re-create Envelope Index -- Mail says it's "importing", but it just re-creates the index if the mailboxes are already in Mail 2.x format.
BTW, you haven't answered which mailbox has the problem. I could be that just rebuilding that mailbox fixes it -- you should verify/repair the disk and make a backup copy of the Mail folder first, nevertheless, though.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder, i.e. ~/Library is the Library folder within the user's home folder.
