Mail encoding question

Whenever i receive an email with non-UTF8 encoding, the content will look like this:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4501501/mail_content.jpg
However if i view the content in the inbox mail listing, the content seems look just fine:
http://dl.dropbox.com/u/4501501/mail_list.jpg
Actually, I think it should be a bug in the Mail apps, and I find this problem when I start using this app to receive email 2 years ago, and seems this problem is not fixed so far. I just want to know will this problem will going to be fixed anyway?

Sorry, but i need to bring up this old thread again.
I am currently facing exactly the same issue mentioned by rudifr, on my iPad mini and my iPhone 4. Text in the 2 preview lines is shown correctly, the message itself is shown with messed up special chars.
BUT: The problem only occurs if i use google's "exchange mode" to access the emails. If i use "Gmail" to setup my mail access (still no push btw.), the encoding in preview and message is correct.
So the problem is either a Mail-App Bug (implementation of exchange protocol), or google messed up their exchange stuff.
This bug is pretty annoying, because also hyperlinks get messed up and are not working any more.
Any ideas?

  • H1 footage & premiere deinterlace encoder questions.

    Hi all,
I recorded some footage on a H1 in 60i HD (HDV). Used Premiere CS3 preset HDV 1080i 30 (60i) to capture it.
    Capture question...
    1. Should i buy cineform aspect or prospect HD to convert it before editing in premiere CS3?
    Adobe media encoder questions...
    2. Should i deinterlace the footage first by selecting "Deinterlace" in the from the output tab?
I was reading some adobe livedocs info that its a good idea to do so, even though canon says their 60i, 30f, 24f is as good as progressive.
    3. should i choose "HDTV 1080i 29.97 High Quality" or "1440 x1080i 29.97 High Quality"?
The H1 captured output from tape is 1440x1080i. The encoder HDTV preset outputs 1920x1080, the other preset obviously outputs 1440x1080.

    1. I use Cineform with great results and would indeed convert it to cineform BEFORE editing. It converts the 4:2:0 colorspace to 4:2:2 and is better to edit with, along with the fact it also coverts long GOP to almost a frame based compressin.
    2. Cineforms method of "deinterlaceing" is different than Adobe's.
I have tried both. It seems that Cineforms is better. There is a LONG post under HDV to SD conversion. Read it.
But, it seems to me that if you keep it interlaced, motion seems smoother and more natural.
Adam Wilt did a good review of the HL and stated that the "F" frames are really progressive frames made from interlaced CCD's. The frames do lose a little vertical resolution.
I would either shoot in F and keep it there, or shoot in I and keep it there.

  • Apple mail font changes with mail encoding

Apple mail will change the font automatically with the encoding of the message.
This might not be shown on Apple Mail, but it does when recieved in Microsoft Ouotlook / Windows.
When I send in Western Latin 1. font is Calibri
Switch the mail encoding to UTF-8, Font becomes Times new roman.
if mail encoding is DBCS like Big-5, it start to switch the big-5 default font on Windows and it's ugly.
This is serious, the change of fonts is very unprofessional.
And we can't ask everyone in the world ot switch to Apple mail, most of working system are still in Outlook...

Ok, on further research it doesn't seem to be as simple as I thought. It's hard for me to fully check now, as I've installed Universal Mailer, but it seems as if this might only apply to mail with a pre-formatted signature.
I've pasted the relevant part of the html from an affected email below. For obvious reasons I've replaced most of the text with asterisks, but as you'll see, some of the text (in italics) is in Verdana (in this case the first two lines), and some (in bold) isn't specified, and appears in whatever default font I choose. (I've added line breaks for clarity.)

  • Encoding questions

    Hello,
I have some encoding questions, my projects are PAL-AVCHD-Full HD 1080i 25 5.1 channel. I export the videos in Windows Media, here come the questions.
What’s the difference between one and two encoding passes?
What does “Allow interlaced processing” do?
    Thanks,
    Enrique

    Enrique,
Let's look at the 1-pass vs 2-pass Encoding.
When one sets the general parameters for Encoding and chooses 1-pass, the parameters are applied over the entire Timeline. This is the quickest method for Encoding and will be pretty good, based on the chosen parameters.
With 2-pass, the Encoding program will first look at the footage, in the scheme of the chosen parameters, but while doing so, will look for faster motion (both camera and subject) in the Timeline. Where it finds the motion, it will mark it for the highest setting in the parameters. The highest settings will be applied to the sections with the most motion, and the "average" will be applied to the rest. This yields a better Encoded file, especially where there is motion. This Encoding method takes longer, as the Encoder must look at all of the footage first to decide what to do, and then to apply the Encoding parameters.
The Encoders used by Hollywood, are usually at least 9-pass, and often quite a bit more. They are also run by experts, who do nothing but Encode all day, and are highly-paid for their work and their expertise. This is why the high motion footage in a commercial DVD will look smoother, than what we can accomplish, and the file will likely even be smaller. Those Encoding programs cost hundreds of thousands of $, so it's not like we could download one and use it, even if we were experts and could figure out the settings.
So to wrap up, a good Encoding engine will likely do a fair job when set to 1-pass, but especially with higher motion footage, likely a better job with 2-pass, and the only cost is time. Unless I am trying to Encode a quick reference file, I will always use multi-pass schemes, to get the best possible output, and just have a cup, or two, of coffee, while I wait. Also, there are better Encoders, than the ones included in our NLE's and authoring programs. Grass Valley's ProCoder is one that gets really high marks - this side of Hollywood.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Sender Mail Adapter Question

    Hello All,
Iu2019m reading the blog: /people/michal.krawczyk2/blog/2005/12/18/xi-sender-mail-adapter--payloadswapbean--step-by-step to apply in my scenario. But Iu2019m having a issue. The messages in sxmb_moni are with state waiting.
I do the same configurations of the blog. But the message go to outbound queue (SMQ2) and have a SYSFAIL with this errror: "Access via 'NULL' object reference not possible".
Anybody have any ideia what's this?

    Stefan,
    I put just this:
    localejbs/AF_Modules/PayloadSwapBean    Local Enterprise Bean   TRANSFORM
    TRANSFORM    swap.keyName   payload-name
    TRANSFORM    swap.keyValue  MailAttachment-1
    The raw format of e-mails:

Do you have more any ideia?

  • Mail adapter question

I have a question regarding the mail adapter scenario.  Firstly data goes to ECC and some validations are performed and if there are any errors, ECC will provide me with some indicator saying this record has errors.
Now, the same structures are used in the opposite direction and I have to count the number of error records based of that and send that info as an email. If I created a UDF to count the number of error records, how do I put that information in the email ?
Is there anyway, I can capture that info in the mail adapter ?
Any useful links will be appreciated.

being from a Java background is that every method/function declaration is supposed to have the return type and I was told that behind the scenes Java is being run which is why I assumed that thats a return type.Again,  I am fairly new and I am in the process of learning things.
For simple UDF (cache = Value), returns string.
For advanced UDF (Cache = Context or Queue), returns array of strings.
The problem is I did not understand the use of ResultList class in this case.
    Refer this -
    http://help.sap.com/saphelp_nw04/helpdata/en/7d/028c4057d5701de10000000a1550b0/frameset.htm
use queue execution types but I am a little bit confused as to the usage of that.
Because of u201Cqueueu201D function, the arguments that we define automatically become arrays, because PI is assuming that we want to operate on multiple input values with this function. That's the reason you are able to traverse through each and every value of the field "ecode".
Any useful example would be appreciated.

  • File encoding question

Just attempting to open some file and read it to screen with BufferedReader and no encoding is handled anywhere...
I tried to save an html file to .txt and just use that as a test file, but yeah encoding was different from ???(the standard encoding I guess) and stopped at some point in the text file.
I did open notepad2 and say under encoding to be ANSI, read a bit on the forums and see UTF-16 mentioned a bit as well... So my question is just what type of encoding is a normal standard text file?

    Hi,
    rugae wrote:
So if I change my regional settings to Chinese or something and create a document with Chinese characters and attempt to read the file If you create the file with a editor, you save it with the encoding that is appointed in your editor. If you save it with java, use OutputStreamWriter with a defined charset (see http://www.exampledepot.com/egs/java.io/WriteToUTF8.html).
say with BufferedReader or just Scanner line by line with no implementation at all to handle different encodings, to console or another file is that going to give me correct outputs? (yes/no would be sufficient to clear it up for me...)Maybe ;-) Finally you have to know the encoding of the file or you have to guess it. If it is a HTML document, there are HTML headers that shows the encoding. If it is transported via HTTP then there is also a HTTP header Content-Type with a encoding declaration. Firefox shows this to the user with [Tools]-[Page Info]. http://www.beijing.gov.cn/ for ex is encoded in GB2312. Some Taiwanese pages may be encoded in BIG5. Encodings aka charsets are defined by IANA http://www.iana.org/assignments/character-sets.
If you know the encoding(charset) of the file, then read it with InputStreamReader and the right charset as shown in http://www.exampledepot.com/egs/java.io/ReadFromUTF8.html.
You can feel confident, if you have saved the file in UTF-(8 or 16) and opened it with the same encoding. UTF encodings are recommended.

What program produced that email? iPod? The one you sent me had two different charsets.
I wrote a html e-mail in Outlook, and a plain text e-mial in my iPod.
I think It's mismatch in character set and contents. Is it right?
Sorry, but I can't understand what you are referring to. You sent me a message from your ipod. It had two different charsets. That is not a bug. Outlook does have a bug which makes it misread messages with two different charsets. Apple could accomodate that bug by having the ipod use the same charset instead of two different ones, and that is the easiest fix, because MS makes garbage software and never fixes its bugs.

  • Able to solve Mail encoding issue with a stationery?

To my knowledge there is no final work around to be sure to send multipart messages (consisting of formated text and attachement) in an encoding which will present the message on an outlook client the way you created it in mail.
In my special case the attachement is a company logo so that could be integrated in the stationery.
I tried to overcome the encoding problem by using a stationery manualy created.
The first time I was able to create a stationery with arial formated text including the company logo. When I sent that stationery with some added text and special characters it was the first time it was displayed correctly on the outlook client.
As the company font is verdana (not my decision) I made the exact same (so I thought) stationery just with verdana formated text and the same image attachemend embedded in the staionery. This resulted in the Message displayed wrong again on the outlook client the text was shown in Times New Roman. From there on I was not even able to reproduce the Arial Stationery which seemed to work. Any Ideas on what is going on with the encoding?
Stationery might not be a final solution overall as I will not be able to send addtional attachements not embedded in the stationery but still knowing that it would work might be a step in the right direction.
    Robert

If I send an email with attachement to an outlook client there is shown the wron font which changes if the encoding used to view is manualy changed on the outlook client after the message is received. Any hints on that?
I don't know of any way an encoding switch could change the display font. But if you would like to send me an example I'll have a look. You have to go to your Sent folder and find a message where this happened, then do Message > Send Again and put my address (tom at bluesky dot org) in place of the original addressee.

  • Mail report question

    Hi there,
This may be a crazt question but I was curious if there was a way to get information from apple mail in report format.
I would like to create report showing waht folder the email is in.
My reason for doing this I seem tobe missing emails.  So instead of going in to each folder, I wondered if I could generate a report of some kind to do it.  Maybe an Applescript?  I do not know how to create scripts.
Or is there a way to add an additonal header in MAIL that would show the folder the email is saved in?
Thanks and I look forward to your reply.
    ...Bruce

    OK, so first some background:
    1) The basic process goes like this:
    a) one release doc (edited by the developer, presumably) and the
template docs are copied to the build area
    b) Each doc is unzipped (ODT's are just ZIP files) into a subdir
    c) The doc contents are copied around; this is to allow Ant to
replace its special @VAR@ variables in the document content
    d) The docs are zipped back up into ODTs
    e) The ODTs are converted into PDFs using OOo's macro functionality
Here are the troubleshooting steps I would apply:
    1) Make sure the external.odt file exists - check the build area
(//content/build/<pluginname>/tmp/) and can be opened using normal
    OpenOffice
    2) Check that the release.odt file exists (same location) and can be
    opened using normal OpenOffice
    3) See if you can manually convert the external.odt file into a PDF -
the command we use is simply:
    soffice -invisible
    macro:///Standard.Collectors.External2PDF(${pkgdir}/tmp/external.odt)
(replace ${pkgdir} with the build directory path).
If all that works, then the Ant build process should work.
Also - what does that OpenOffice error popup say?

well obviously i just got the new upgrade, but the question is how do you delete a mail account you already have on the ipod touch?
i tried manually putting one in and then later on synched it with my Mac, so now I have two of the same account (one that works and the other one doesn't). I don't see a delete button for individual accounts anywhere.
    thanks

    LOL - no way.

  • Mail forwarding question

    Hello,
I have added mail forwarding throguh delegated admin for a user.
The issue I am observing is the mail box which has forwarder entry also has emails and they are not getting deleted.
My question is whether can I set something where in the message gets deleted after forwarding it.
I am using iPlanet Messaging Server 5.2 HotFix 1.20

You are indeed using an old version of Messaging Server.
5.2p2 is available free, and is later than what you're using.
5.2hf1.10 is current, and is available through Tech Support.
All that being said, when you turn forwarding on, you likely left "mailbox" delivery on. that means that the messages will be both forwarded AND delivered to the mailbox.
Uncheck the "mailbox" delivery, and you won't see messages getting delivered there.
The DA will show a checkbox next time you go that user, though. Not to worry....

  • Mail syncing question

    Hi,
    the scenario is this:
On my macbook, 10.6, one of the POP accounts is acting strange. It's a BT internet account. Symptoms are it starts to download messages and just gets stuck. Also duplicates are appearing. I've tried deleting the message from the server via webmail, and recreating the account. The messages do reach the iPhone no problem.
So , i'm assuming that there's something lurking inside "My home directory"/Library/Mail.
I'm going to delete this Mail folder, along with Mail preferences.
The question is, can i sync the accounts (one bt internet, the other @me.com) from my iPhone / ipod to the Macbook via either MobileMe or iTunes?
Am i right in thinking that you can sync accounts from a desktop / laptop Mac to an iPhone / iPod, but you can't do the reverse?
    Many thanks in advance.

The +iPod touch+ doesn't offer Mail syncing. All it does is sync the account details. Emails are downloaded separately when you next get a suitable WiFi connection.

  • MAIL certificate question

Lately I get a question box when I open MAIL.   I have Snow Leopard, and opted to keep Mobile Me at the switch this summer.   It has been working just fine,
same as always with no change.  Now I get this:    note:  {   }   is a description from me for something I can not create here
    Verify Certificate.
The certificate for this server is invalid.  You might be connecting to a server that is pretending to be "mail.me.com" which could put your confidential infirmation at reks.  Do you want to connect to the server anyway?
☐   Always trust "mail.mac.com"  when connecting to "mail.me.com"
    {then there is a box enclosure}
    ☐     {this one is bwown}   Verification Class 3 Public Primary Certification Authority - G5
{below, indented}    {an arrow like this one  ↵  pointing to the right to this bluish box,}  ☐     VeriSign Class 3 Extended Validation SSL SGC CA
    {then a larger bluish box:     "Mail.mac.com"
Issued  by: VeriSign Class 3 Extended Validation SSLSGC CA Expires:  Friday, April 18, 2014.
{then  a red circle with an X inside, statement in red}   This certificate is not valid (host name mismatch)
         Trust
         Details
    {my choices}     Hide Certificate          Cancel     Connect {in blue}
    --------------------------------end of warning--------
Thank you in advance.    What should I do?   Is anyone else getting this?   The emails still coming in are directed to my email address.
    Tom

    I have iCloud eMail running in 10.4.11 & 10.5.8...
Do not delete the old account yet. sign up for an iCloud account if you haven't.
I understand .mac mail will still come through. Do not delete the old account yet.
You cannot use .mac or MobileMe as type of Account, you have to choose IMAP when setting up, otherwise Mail is hard coded to change imap.mail.me.com to mail.me.com & smtp.mail.me.com to smtp.me.com, no matter what you try to enter.
iCloud Mail setup, do not choose .mac or MobileMe as type, but choose IMAP...
On second step where it asks "Description", it has to be a unique name, but you can still use your email address.
    IMAP (Incoming Mail Server) information:
              •          Server name: imap.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 993
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
    SMTP (outgoing mail server) information:
              •          Server name: smtp.mail.me.com
              •          SSL Required: Yes
              •          Port: 587
              •          SMTP Authentication Required: Yes
              •          Username: [email protected] (use your @me.com address from your iCloud account)
              •          Password: Your iCloud password
Also, you must upgrade your password to meet the new criteria:  8 characters, including upper and lower case and numbers.  If you have an older password that does not meet these criteria, when you try to setup mail on your mac, using all of the IMAP criteria listed above, it will still give a server error message.  Go to   http://appleid.apple.com         then follow directions to change your password, then go back to setting up your mail using the IMAP instructions above.
    Thanks to dpepper...
