Mail fails to connect to smtp servers after 10.9.3 update

Wiped hard drive and installed 10.9 plus 10.9.3 combo updater.
90% of my email accounts cannot connect to their smtp servers.
Created a new user account and setup Mail with an account with the same result.

Confirmed.
At my University, I have a locally produced .mobileconfig file that is used to set up network, mail and all other access on a new Mac / Macbook. Further, the University uses a self-signed certificate to authenticate all connections.
Up until 10.9.2, Mail worked normally as it should.
After 10.9.3, Mail works for the imap server (and I can receive email fine) but sending email via the smtp server fails at all times except the ones noted below (read on). Connection doctor says that smtp server rejected authentication and advises me to recheck my username and password (needless to add - they are correct).
smtp connections work if:
1. I delete all Mail accounts.
2. Use the University-supplied .mobileconfig file to recreate all accounts (LDAP, mail, wifi, etc.).
If however, I close my macbook to sleep it, or change network settings (go from proxied to non-proxied mode, or vice versa - which was never a problem until now), smtp stops working.
Upshot - smtp works only if I delete my accounts everytime I wake up the macbook and redo steps 1 and 2 above. I have taken to saving contents of the outbox to the drafts folder, and then logging in through the webmail interface to actually send the email.
This is nuts.
Apple's engineers need their heads examined if they think that rolling out an inadequately tested update is acceptable.

  • Mail Fails To Connect In My Office Network, Works on Reboot

This is baffling me and my network admin:
Mail fails to connect to any of my accounts at work. But it recovers if I reboot my machine.
    Here is what happens:
    - Mail works just fine at home. Connects to gmail, iCloud, and a 3rd party email account no problems.
    - I get to the office
    - I log in to the office WiFi with my password - for this I have to open a browser window, and enter my credentials.
(I kind of assume that this is the problem ^^)
    - All my internet connections work fine, I can use the browser to access Gmail etc
    - Mail refuses to connect to any of my email servers, and all accounts go offline
    - Connection Doctor says "Mail can connect to the internet" but all individual connections are red, not reachable. I checked "detail" too - its empty.
Then I reboot my Mac, and after that everything's happy. Mail connects to my accounts normally, and Connection Doctor marks all as green.
Since it works on reboot, we can rule out network problems like closed ports etc. So the only thing I can think of is that Mail initially tries to connect as soon as I am on WiFi, then hangs (because I am not logged in yet), and somehow this hang is of a kind that does not recover (I've left it on for hours at a time, no difference, it never recovers).
Anyone have any ideas about this? Is there some way I can restart networking daemons to kill the hung connections. Or any other way I can diagnose this?

A captive portal, which is what you have, can work in any of at least three ways: by HTTP redirection, IP redirection, or DNS poisoning. I'm guessing that yours is the last type. In that case, a TTL of zero should be used. If the TTL is non-zero, then Internet applications may not work until the DNS cache is flushed. That happens when you reboot.
You should discuss the possibility with your network admin. If the network configuration isn't going to be changed, you may be able to avoid the need to reboot by flushing the DNS cache manually, as described in the article linked below:

  • Canon camera no longer connects to Macbook Pro after 10.4.7 update

Has anybody gotten word from Apple on this issue yet? My Rebel XT/350D stopped connecting to my MBP after the latest software update. It has stopped working with iPhoto, Image Capture and Capture ONE. If I put the CF card in a USB reader, it is recognized (occasionally) as a removable disk.
    What gives?

    CZ:
Did you update the system via the Software Update? If so then download the 10.4.7 COMBO updater and run it. There are some files it's reported, that are left off the incremental updater and the combo one will fix some of the problems that causes. Not sure your problem is one of them but it's work a try. Don't forget to repair disk permissions afterward.

  • Mail doesn't connect to any servers anymore

Hey all - over the weekend my Mail is suddenly not connecting to any of my email servers.  I have a 123-reg account, squirrelhosting, and a couple of hotmail accounts - so a variety of POP and IMAP.  Mail is not connecting to any of them and is giving me "The server “xxxxxxxxx” cannot be contacted on port xxx.
All of the email accounts are accessable via webmail.  They also still work on my iPhone.
    I have tried:
    - Disabling SSL
    - Using alternate SSL ports (993, 25,465)
    - re-creating accounts (I tried adding a brand new Hotmail account and that still won't connect)
    - deleting the V2 folder
    - deleting com.apple.mail-shared.plist
    - deleting the MailData Envelope indexes
    - flushing the DNS Cache
    - Reparing Keychain
    - Verifying/Repairing Disk Permissions
    - Creating a new User and trying new mail accounts in there
I've pretty much exhausted all my ideas and wanted to see if anyone had any ideas before I give up on Mail and migrate to Outlook/Thunderbird.
    Many thanks in advance!

After 6 months of support and Mac engineers in the States trying to solve this issue on a new 27 inch Fusion drive, the soltion was simple!

  • Mail is not connecting with pop servers

Question 1.- I have two email addresses that I manage with Mail.  Both are POP. Suddenly Mail stopped connecting with both of them.  I erased an account and can't set up the new one because it gives me an error message to check my user name and password.  On the other hand, my iphone is working fine with both servers. Support people at one of the providers couldn't help me.
    Can somebody help me?
Question 2.- When I set up my Prodigy account, it automatically shows as "Yahoo POP".   Prodigy has nothing to do with Yahoo so, anybody knows why this happens?
    Thank you!!!

Okay, now we're a bit further... I hope...
    First,
Just tried and now I can't send anything from the server Tagra from my iphone either!! What a mess!! It's telling me the server does not allow relaying.
that's easy: You must be trying to send email with or from a different address (e.g. [email protected]) by using the Tagra SMTP server (mail.tagra.com.mx). Most SMTP servers don't like that and protest.
So, on your iPhone, go to Settings and the Prodigy and any other non-Tagra account, and make sure that not mail.tagra.com.mx but the correct outgoing mail server is chosen! Only your Tagra account must use Tagra servers, no other one!
For iPhone setup see e.g. this Prodigy iPhone setup.
    That should work again.
    Now back to your Mac.
Your trouble could be the result of some hiccup in a DNS server. So, you'll make one addition and one change to be safe. No worries, it's nothing critical, I'll try to explain here:
    1) I guess the current DNS entry in your Mac (192.168.1.254) is your router's IP address, and in the router are DNS addresses stored. To be safe, please add in Network -> Advanced -> DNS under DNS server also these two numbers: 200.33.146.193 and 200.33.146.201, above the old number, and each one in its own line. These two are some of Prodigy's DNS servers. So, it should read now:
    200.33.146.193
    200.33.146.201
    192.168.1.254
Okay! This will make sure that your Mac uses Prodigy DNS servers, no matter what's in your router, but the router stays in as well.
    2) In Apple Mail -> Preferences -> Prodigy account, replace the mail server names in text format with their IP addresses in number format. It's the same, but avoids certain trouble with DNS servers.
For the Incoming Mail Server, make it: 148.235.52.179
For the Outgoing Mail Server, make it: 148.235.52.32
Again, it's the same servers, only in number format. And you can always change it back, only we have reason to hope that with the numbers it'll work.
All other settings incl ports etc must remain the same, e.g. the same as in the iPhone instructions.
Now close all apps, and restart the Mac.
And now try if Apple Mail works for your Prodigy account... I'm crossing my fingers...

  • A tip on how to get mail to work with O2 SMTP servers.

I found I had a problem in Mountain Lion where Mail could not log into the O2 SMTP servers even though I was using the exact same settings that were on my iPhone, iPad and MBP running Lion?
Well I finally found a solution.
In Mail open preferences and click on Accounts and select the account in the lefthand pane.
Click on the Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP) and in the drop down menu select Edit SMTP Servers to get:
Normally the radio button against Use Default Ports would be checked, instead check Use Custom Port and insert the number 25 and click OK.
Now back at the Accounts window click on Advanced at the top to get:
Make sure you have Port 110, on mine changing the SMPT to 25 also altered this to 25 so worth checking. When you have finished close the preferences and click on save, quite Mail then restart hopefully all should work now.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen. Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then take one of the actions that you're having trouble with. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
The log contains a vast amount of information, almost all of which is irrelevant to solving any particular problem. When posting a log extract, be selective. A few dozen lines are almost always more than enough.
Please don't indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Please don't post screenshots of log messages—post the text.
Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

  • 10.6.2 - Mail will not connect to POP servers

For the last few days Mail has refused to connect to my POP mail servers (provided by oneandone.co.uk). It displays the spinning circles next to the inboxes and eventually a warning triangle. I can connect to the servers via webmail and other devices, though of course this is not a viable alternative.
Do I have to reinstall Mail somehow? I don't see why going as far as reinstalling Snow Leopard should be required. I've tried numerous ports and authentication settings and nothing works.

Neither of those things would be indicated -- the applications do not contain the User Account setup info, anyway, and reinstalling would not change that.
Please click on Window in the menubar of the Mail window and choose Connection Doctor -- what does it report?

  • Mail refuses to use outgoing SMTP servers

I have two accounts in my mail, one for my ISP, the other is my .Mac account. For some reason mail refuses to use the correct SMTP servers. The setup is correct, and the problem just cropped up one day.
How do I blow them out and start from scratch?

Hmmm, sounds like you have some Disk problems.
    "Try Disk Utility
    1. Insert the Mac OS X Install disc that came with your computer, then restart the computer while holding the C key.
    2. When your computer finishes starting up from the disc, choose Disk Utility from the Installer menu. (In Mac OS X 10.4 or later, you must select your language first.)
*Important: Do not click Continue in the first screen of the Installer. If you do, you must restart from the disc again to access Disk Utility.*
    3. Click the First Aid tab.
    4. Click the disclosure triangle to the left of the hard drive icon to display the names of your hard disk volumes and partitions.
    5. Select your Mac OS X volume.
    6. Click Repair. Disk Utility checks and repairs the disk."
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=106214
Then Safe Boot from the HD, (holding Shift key down at bootup), run Disk Utility in Applications>Utilities, then highlight your drive, click on Repair Permissions, reboot when it completes.
    Please report errors.

  • Cannot connect to network servers after recent security update on OSX 10.5.8

I can no longer connect to others servers/PC's on the network at my brothers office.  I had no problem the last time I was in there.  The only thing that has changed is that I did the latest security upadate from Apple.
There should be no reason why I no longer access files from other devices on the network, that I previoulsy been able to access with no problems.

This not being an iTunes issue, I'd suggest you post in the Mac OS X 10.5 Networking forum. If anyone knows a fix, you'll probably find it there.
    Good luck.

Is there any bug for this issue or security update.??
    Help would be really appreciated.
    Awaiting some good response.

    Hi abidmomin,
Thanks for contributing to the Apple Support Communities.
It appears that after updating your iPhone to iOS 8.2, you're not able to connect to your Wi-Fi network.
I recommend starting with the tips in this article to troubleshoot the situation:

  • Mail does not connect to mail servers after 10.5.7 update

Updated Macbook Air with 10.5.7 update. The update went without problems.
After starting the computer, the Mail program does not connect to the mail servers - IMAP, POP, SMTP.
Otherwise the internet connection is OK for other programs, connection is through WIFI - Airport Extreme, Time Capsule... In all cases the same problem with Mail - showing the following
The server error encountered was: The connection to the server “mail.mac.com” on port 993 failed (error 1: Operation not permitted)
    The connection doctor shows
Mail was able to connect to the internet
and for all the servers - could not connect, check your connection...
Did repair of keychain and permissions - no change in status of Mail... any ideas?

  • Mail app asking for passwords it already knows, taking accounts offline, intermittently failing to connect IMAP/SMTP

Recently I have been experiencing intermittent connection failures with Mail in OS X 10.7.5 on both our Mac Pro and MacBook Pro.
The little "lightning bolt" icon or the "exclamation point" icon will occasionally appear next to some or all of my accounts in the left column and Mail will (sometimes) prompt for passwords already in my keychain and then take the accounts offline. Sometimes the failures take place during IMAP logins and sometimes during SMTP sends. Sometimes they affect my iCloud accounts, sometimes my Gmail accounts, and sometimes both.
When I try to take the account(s) back online, Mail sometimes fails to do so. Quitting the Mail application completely and relaunching it will randomly result in the problem persisting or going away. What makes this so confusing is about half the time, Mail works just fine.
This is only happening on OS X, in Apple Mail, our iPad and iPhones appear unaffected even when running on the same router with the same ISP. I can also verify that all the iCloud and Gmail accounts in question can be reached successfully using other mail client software from Windows in my various virtual machines. Therefore I believe this is an application issue and not something related to my network.
When the issue is evident, Connection Doctor will fail on some or all counts...when it goes away Connection Doctor will show all green lights again.
This issue has only manifested in the past week or so, and both machines are up to date on Software Updates. Perhaps something pushed out recently from Apple is causing this? Is anyone else having a similar experience?

Same issue, too.  But I have nothing better to do than try to fix Apple problems that appear mysteriously and randomly; I'm sure you're the same way.
The REAL REASON, which can no longer be overlooked, is that Apple's (probably underpaid sweatshop Chinese) employees build toys for grown-ups and do little more than that.  I wish I had never bought my Mac (2009) since few things about Apples are "intuitive" unless you've been an Apple cultist since Jobs introduced the first Mac.  Oh, and because things mysteriously stop working, something I don't recall happening with any of the PCs I've owned.
Apple's version of Excel is a total joke and on an update that I did not ask for, the "Save As" feature, a convention that was 30 years old and worked well, was removed in favor of "Duplicate, Rename, Save."  What 22 year-old Apple product manager was allowed to make this change?
I foolishly compounded my Mac purchase error by buying an iPhone 4S.  On that lovely ($200 Verizon-subsidized) product, I can no longer discover my home network, rendering my ($100) Airplay for outdoor music useless.  (But I probably can post a picture directly to Facebook or something!  More toyish behavior in which Apple specializes.)  Can I get support on these POS with a phone call?  No, I need to rely on a Aapl cultist to devise some esoteric key combo or a "jailbreak" on a Support board or blog site.
I'm eligible for a phone upgrade on 8/13 and I'm counting the days.  Will upgrade to a good large-screen laptop asap as well and then throw the Mac out my office window.  Junk, just junk.  Apple's stock is at $433 from $700 and it's still overpriced.  How long will this rant last before it's sanitized by the Cupertino Big Brother? Maybe what the children who design product ought to do instead is BUILD BETTER STUFF.

  • Ovi Mail fails to connect after netwrork/provider ...

I have three email accounts on my E72, two of which work just fine after I changed service provider/network (from TDC to Telenor, Denmark), but Ovi Mail doesn't sync. Pressing Z initiates the sync but then after one second it gives up. There IS mail waiting on my account. I have made no changes to the phone apart from removing all connections associated with my old network. The phone is not sim-locked or anything.
Ideas please (except factory reset, I only do one of the those a mjonth :-) )

Each mailbox has two settings for the Access Point.  While viewing that mailbox's messages, choose Options -> Settings -> Mailbox Settings -> Advanced Mailbox Settings.  Incoming Email Server and Outgoing Email Server have an "Access Point in Use" option.  Make sure those are both set correctly.
If they are...spare yourself some anguish.  Delete the mailbox completely (if you're using Nokia's Messaging service via email.nokia.com, maybe delete the account from there if such an option exists?) and remake.  That's sure to get it working again.

  • MacBook fails to connect to wireless network after sleep mode

My MacBook fails to reconnect to my wireless network after waking up.
After turning on my MacBook it establishes a decent connection to whatever wireless network I choose (mostly at home). When I close the lid and open it again the network connection is lost and is only reestablished after reboot.
Hopefully someone has a solution as this is very annoying.

Instead of a reboot go to your Wireless Menu icon and select "Turn Airport Off".
Wait a second and "Turn Airport On."
For me this has been a problem for about 2 years. This is much faster than a reboot!
