Mail fails to receive or send pop account

MAIL has just stopped receiving or sending in my POP account. My diagnostics show all  "green" dots, can any one assist  (in simple  language please !! ), thank you.

Hi Paul    I did contact my ORANGE provider support ...spent about half hour (or more)  they could not find any thing .. all my settings were ok !!! but still no send or receive, they suggestted to get messages to go to the web site & sign in there.
I then found that I had  about 150000 messages  so deleted those & then went back to MAIL & all seemed Ok  !!!!
the thing that this suggests is that I go to the ISP website & clear  all , periodically   (THATS MY iDEA, any way )
But thanks for your help.

  • Can't get mac mail boxes to receive or send

My email stopped receiveing or sending a couple of days ago. I have ATT as ESP & went through their tech support to help me get it back up & running. However, it still does not work with my mac mail. I have to log onto my email through the ATT website. I have deleted and re-created all of my mailboxes - and am receiving emails on my primary account. None of my subaccounts are receiving and none of my accounts can send. The SMTP says "offline" and I haven't been able to get it online. All of my accounts are set up as POP - they were IMAP, and that seemed to be an issue with ATT. I don't carewhich as I don't have other devices that I receive emails on.
Does anyone have advice on how to get my mac mail back to good health?

    Hi cindy2227!
I have an article for you that can help you troubleshoot this mail issue a little further. The article will walk you through some troubleshooting steps to ascertain the root of the issue, and can be found here:

  • Mail will not receive nor send mail, very annoying

Hey all. I have this problem in Mail that it will not send nor receive the mail. I know you're gonna tell me to look in the forums as well as the support documents, but I have done those like...10 times? So I seriously need help. Both my yahoo and Gmail accounts will not work anymore. All the settings are all right and Mail used to work like a dream. I suspect it's something to do with the servers because when I try to set up mail in Entourage, it won't work as well. Any ideas. TIA! By the way, I can excess my mail through the Gmail website. When I try to excess my Gtalk account through Adium, it won't connect as well.

    Hi,
Sorry to hear that your email doesn't work.
Can you please explain what your settings are?
Take each account separately. Try to work on one at a time.
My wife uses gmail from Mail, and every few months something stops working. Each time, I find that Google has changed something on their end that requires me to change/tweak one of her settings. I find the help on gmail.com to be invaluable for this. Make sure that they are exactly the same as in the help files.
My wife's parents use yahoo for mail. There email also sometimes fails. I don't know why. They live in Europe, so I'm not sure if it's just that they are awake when most of us in the western hemisphere are asleep when they do maintenance or something. It seems to just stop for a day or two, then work again. Yahoo also has some help files.

  • Mail can not receive messages from yahoo account

    Hello,
last year I bought my first Appler computer and it was a good decision . I use the mail application and addes 2 email accounts. One yahoo email account and one t-online email account. It works very well until september ... Since september I can't receive new messages from my yahoo account.
I tried different things I read in this forum. For example to delete the file com.apple.mail.list in library/preferences and start the mail application. I create a new account for yahoo. Mail read the only 49 messages from the total 84 messages. If I look at the account information within the mail application it shows all 84 messages from the yahoo account.
I also use opera as an other internet browser and the embedded email client. Opera receive my emails from the yahoo acount.
There are any other suggestions to solve my problem ?

I'm having the same problem too. I think it's an issue on Yahoo's end because whenever I can't retrieve message on the POP server, I also can't login to Yahoo on Adium Messenger. Yahoo has a history of this happening, but never for days on end. I think the solution is to set your Yahoo mail to forward to Gmail and be done with it.

Mail/Preferences/Account/ Remove copy from server. You must do this for each account.

  • Mail crashes when trying to access pop accounts

    Help!
Since I updated to OS 10.4.8, mail has stopped working properly. Whenever I try to get mail from my pop accounts, it crashes immediately. As long as I stay offline, the program seems to work.
I tried deleting my accounts and re-entering them, but that didn't have any effect. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?
    Powerbook G4 12"   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

    You're welcome.
There is probably some corruption in one or more of the files used by the junk filter. The following procedure thoroughly gets rid of all those files, so that Mail creates them anew:
    1. Quit Mail if it's running.
    2. In the Finder, go to ~/Library/Mail/.
    3. Locate LSMMap2 and move it to the Trash. This file stores information about what does and doesn't constitute junk, and is what allows the junk filter to learn. Clicking the Reset button in Preferences > Junk Mail also deletes LSMMap2. The file was called just LSMMap in early versions of Mail, delete that as well if you see it.
    4. Locate DefaultCounts and move it to the Trash. This file keeps statistics about the number of messages that have been marked as junk, either automatically by the junk filter or manually by the user.
    5. Locate MessageRules.plist and move it to the Desktop. This is where Mail 2.x stores all rules, including those used by the junk filter. If there is a file called MessageRules.plist.backup, move it to the Desktop too. You may also see MessageSorting.plist files there; this is where Mail 1.x stored the rules, and they are no longer used by Mail 2.x, so just move them to the Trash if you see them.
    6. Look for the account folders. The name of each account folder starts with the account type (POP, IMAP, Mac), followed by the account username and the incoming mail server. Open each of the account folders, locate the Junk.mbox or Junk.imapmbox folder within it, and move it to the Trash if present.
    7. Go to ~/Library/Mail/Mailboxes/. Locate any Junk.mbox folders there (their name may include the account name in parenthesis), and move them to the Trash.
Note: Messages in Junk folders with an .mbox suffix are stored locally and will be lost forever as a result of doing steps 6 and 7. If there is a chance that you have legit messages there that you want to preserve, either move the messages to another mailbox in Mail first, or move the Junk.mbox folder to the Desktop (to be imported back later) instead of to the Trash. Junk folders with an .imapmbox suffix aren't a concern because they are stored on the server and Mail will rebuild them automatically.
    8. Open Mail. As a result of removing the rules file, the junk filter will be disabled now. You may want to either tell Mail to go offline immediately after opening it, or shut down the Internet connection before opening Mail, to prevent it from downloading anything until the junk mail filter has been enabled again.
    9. Go to Mail > Preferences > Junk Mail, enable junk filtering, and configure it however you wish.
    10. Go online again if you went offline in step 8.
If the above solves the problem and you don't have any rules you'd like to preserve or recreating them is not a daunting task, just delete the MessageRules.plist files that were moved to the Desktop and be done with it.
Note: For those not familiarized with the ~/ notation, it refers to the user's home folder. You can easily locate any of the folders referred to in this post by copying the file path here, doing Go > Go to Folder in the Finder, and pasting the file path there.

  • Mail will not download from Earthlink POP account

Have two accounts set up in Mail: one is IMAP me.com account; the other is POP Earthlink account. Suddenly, today, Mail on my MBPro will not download messages from the Earthlink POP account. It asked for my password (oddly, because it is in keychain) & then would no longer download mail. Messages download to my iPhone just fine from both accounts. Have checked connection doctor (all ok), deleted messages after last download using webmail in case of malformed email, & fixed file permissions. No luck so far. Suggestions, please?

UPDATE: I deleted the me.com account and added it back in & Mail seems to be working fine again. For some reason, I have a lot of duplicate messages in the Earthlink In box now, though. Still curious as to what caused this to begin with. Is it something about the me.com account? It seemed like Mail quit downloading messages after it checked the me.com account.

  • Cannot receive email from pop account on first generation iPad

  • Mail can't login into my POP account since 10.6.2

I was receiving email up to minutes before I updated to 10.6.2, nothing since.
Same account OK from Leopard, and on iPhone.
I get: 'The POP server “mail.uqconnect.net” rejected the password for user “zzbspenc”.'
Connection Doctor connects to the Internet OK, fails to login to account.
I can login to the ISP's server from Terminal ok.
Reported to my ISP, and was told that a number of other users have reported the same problem.

Hey, tried something which appears to have worked.
Under Mail Preferences > Accounts > Advanced:
Changed "Authentication" from "MD5 Challenge-Response" (which is what was set in Leopard setup) to "Password"

  • Setting mail server to check other (remote) POP accounts

Can someone tell me what technique is used to configure Mac OS X (Tiger) Server to retrieve mail from other POP servers? I am wanting to use an internal mail server at my organisation for main mail handling (most large emails are between people within the building) and have it automatically retrieve emails from various ISP mail servers.
This way, users appear to have a very fast connection to the mail server, and if it ever goes down they can still connect to the ISP's server and still be able to retrieve new messages.
Also useful for collecting a desparate collection of email accounts into one, and have the mail filters act on it.
I've come across etrn & uucp, but they don't sound like this is what they were designed for.
    thanks,
    Ray.

Thanks Jeff. Just the one word was required to send me off in the right direction. I had encountered sendmail, but couldn't recall it to get a man page on it.
One other question (couldn't find mention of it in discussions): I have played with it and got it working for my account by running it manually (and as a daemon under my user).
But the question is how do I get it to launch at startup? Do I put a .plist in the /Library/LaunchDaemons? And if started this way, will it automatically notice all the ~/.fetchmailrc files and process everyone's mail?
    Thanks for your help.

  • Mail fails to erase messages on POP server upon download

My mail (ie tiget mail) is set to delete messages immedaitely upon downloading them from the POP server. Yet, when I go into the web interface from my provider, I can see that the messages are still there, read, but not deleted.
This started about 2 weeks ago, wihtout any changes in my set up.
    Any ideas ?
Using latest OS update on Powerbook G4. Service provider is afmu.com.

I did try Thunderbird at your suggestions.
-1- Thunderbird DOES clean up the mailbox on the server after downloading the messages form the server, so it looks like we have some Apple mail problem indeed.
-2- I tried to install T bird properly, and Thunderbird was unable to import / find the settings and mailboxes from Apple mail ( had to create the accounts form scratch) . Does this mean some sort of setting file for apple mail is corrupted on not in the right location ? Which settings file(s) does mail use and where do they live ?
-3- unfortunately, I can not stay with Thunderbird as I use Spamsieve as a junk filter and they do not support Thunderbird..

  • Mail can't receive or send, always goes offline

I have tried to take mail on line and also restarted mail and restarted my mac.
    Mail keeps going offline intermitently
there is no ryhme  or reason
    can some one help

When you have the problem, note the exact time: hour, minute, second.
These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.
The title of the Console window should be All Messages. If it isn't, select
SYSTEM LOG QUERIES ▹ All Messages
from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select
              View ▹ Show Log List
from the menu bar at the top of the screen.
Each message in the log begins with the date and time when it was entered. Scroll back to the time you noted above.
Select the messages entered from then until the end of the episode, or until they start to repeat, whichever comes first.
Copy the messages to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message by pressing command-V.
