Mail filling in groups from Contacts

There is a problem with Mail filling in groups from Contacts in a way which didn't happen to me before Mavericks.
When I now type in the first letter(s), Mail tries to auto complete, but when I have the right group in the "to" bar and press the enter-key the name disappears.
When I type too fast for mail auto complete to keep up (already typed the whole group name) and press enter, nothing happens, the name of the group isn't replaced by the people belonging to that group.. The cursor just keeps blinking berhing the group name.
I take it this is a bug, not by design...
Already filed a bug report at apple.com/feedback

The app Mail2Group, both paid and lite, makes it easer to mail to groups. There is no other good workaround except to copy addresses to a master group list/document and copy and paste.

I just posted this fix to another thread and thought it might be useful to post to all of the threads I read trying to fix the problem. Here it is:
Having the same issue over here with Mavericks 10.9.1 on a new Macbook Pro/Retina. Just now found a workaround/fix/whatever:
    - click on your group in the group pane of the address panel
    - click anywhere in the name pane and select all (command + a)
    - click the "To:" or "Cc:" or "Bcc:" tab right above the group pane at the top of the address panel window.
The names of all of the individuals in the group will appear as an expanded list in whatever field you clicked. It takes a second or two to happen.

  • Delete groups from Contacts?

How do you delete a group from Contacts?
Everything I've read says there is supposed to be a delete button, but no such button is there....

    DOH!!!
    Thank you John.

  • Is your Mail extremely slow trying to send to a "group" from Contacts?

I can't believe how long this is taking to just add a couple groups from my Contacts into the To: area of a message in Mail.  I've never had this problem with my older 10.6.8 OS.  There are about 150 addresses in one group and less than 10 in another, yet, once I type in the group name, everything slows down to a snails pace in Mail and I can't type one letter without having the beachball of death start spinning.  This is ridiculous!  Is anyone else having these kinds of problems?  Generally Mail in Mavericks has been working well for me - the amount of spam has decreased tremendously, but this new issue is a big problem!
    Thanks for any insight,
    kt

I am climbing the walls with this.
I have to type the text of the mail, then insert the group.
Forgot about changing anything later or adding a second group.
It takes several minutes to change one character.

  • In iCloud, how to send an e-mail to a group of contacts, once I've created the group?

I have created a group  from my iCloud contacts, but do not see how to send an e-mail message to this group.
The help topics don't go this far.  Can anyone help?

Thanks Winnie;  but why didn't that work when I typed in the whole title of the group?   Just the 1st 2 letters did the trick.

  • Email group from Contacts

This may be a silly question, but does anyone know how to send an email to a Group from your Contacts?  Can't seem to figure it out in Mavericks.

But why should we have to type?  Previously you could just intuitively drag the group name to the "To" field and it would populate it.
That implies that you have both Contacts and Mail open. When you type the group name in Mail's TO field it pops up into a list within the first couple of entered letters, and then you just make your selection. Contacts doesn't have to be open.

  • Is it possible to export a Group from Contacts to a spreadsheet? I have Version 8.0 (1371.2) on my Mac

How can I export a Group in Contacts to an Excel spreadsheet ? I've tried to follow the instructions but am going in circles:  I opened the Group, then 'selected" all contacts in the Group, then chose File>Export>Export vCard. Saved it to Desktop, but when I open the file from desktop, it appears that I'm Importing them to Contacts.... I just want a spreadsheet that I can import into Constant Contact.

    It's not possible.

..... But it does not work that way in the mail app on the iPad. There are third party apps that will let you email to contact groups - but not the built in Mail App.
Look at Group Email in the App Store.

  • Deleting a Smart Group from Contacts Problem

I upgraded to Mavericks this week, and have run into a problem where I can't delete a SmartGroup from Contacts. I highlight the group, hit the delete key, confirm that I want to delete the group, but nothing happens. There are also a couple of Smart Groups that crash Ad

No joy. I tried this, and then also deleting that file plus AddressBook-v22.abcddb-shm, AddressBook-v22.abcddb-wal, and the various .abcdg files in Metadata. Once I launch AddressBook, all the Smart Groups are back, and new files are populated in Metadata.
What finally "solved" the problem is to go to my previous laptop, delete *all* groups, smart or otherwise, and export the contacts. I copied that export to the new computer, imported it, and so far all seems well. I'll recreate some of the groups, which is a bit of a pain, but at least Contacts seems to not crash now.

  • Eliminating a Group from Contacts

How do I eliminate a group from my contacts?

Sorry, Patrick. I wrote that without checking, trusting my memory.
Select the Group you want to delete in the left hand window, pull down on Edit, and select Delete Group.
That will not delete the entries in that group. If you want to delete all members of a group and the group itself, first select all of the entries in the group and delete them. (Edit, Delete Card.)

  • Mail not send messages from contacts groups

I have two contacts groups but when i send a email to one of them I receive the seme message for all addreses:
Unable to send the message through the X server The server "smtp.gmail.com" did not recognize the following recipients:
The smtp configuration it's ok because the other group could be sending without problems.
    Thanks

Having the same problem, but in addition, I also get a warning message next to the account in the list of accounts under Inbox (I have several; the icon is a triangle inside a circle).
Out of 10 emails accounts checking, a bunch will randomly be unable to connect to the server. I have a solid internet connection, so thats not the problem.
Gotta get back to webmail to see what I'm missing...

  • Why can't Mail access email addresses from Contacts?

So, here is a typical scenario: I have an email to write to a friend of mine. Being a close friend of mine, his email address is saved in Contacts. I boot up Apple Mail, and create a new email. So far so good. I start typing my friend's name into the "To:" field, but nothing comes up in the auto-search. I remember how his email starts, so I start typing his email in, but once again, nothing comes up. I boot up Contacts, just to be sure, and his email is in there. Finally I copy and paste it into Mail.
WHAT THE ****??? AM I MISSING SOMETHING??
I know that I can look up Contacts from within Mail, but that's not what I'm looking for. I want Mail to automatically start search through my Contacts whenever I start typing into the To: field. But instead, it only searches through my previous recipients? I've also noticed that it doesn't pull up email addresses that were CC'd on emails I've recieved. In order to find those, I have to do a Spotlight search in Mail (which immediately finds the email address and even identifies it as a person), and then copy and paste it from Mail into Mail.
Am I missing some setting? When did the automatic search in the To: field become useless? Did I go into a coma and wake up in a world where Apple hates a positive user experience? Which OS update killed this functionality and why?
Really, any light on the subject or work-arounds would be appreciated. I've tried Postbox, and while the To: search works sensibly there, the program is slow as molassas. It is as awful to use as Mail, just in different ways. I'd switch to browser based email, but I have three addresses, and Gmail only imports POP accounts, one of mine is IMAP only . . . honestly, I'm to the point where I want to just stop using email all together. I have other complaints, but this is the most inexplicable and annoying.
Maybe I'll invest in carrier pidgeons.

Please follow these directions to delete the Mail "sandbox" folder.
    Back up all data.
    Quit Mail.
Triple-click the line below to select it:
    ~/Library/Containers/com.apple.mail
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
    Services ▹ Reveal
from the contextual menu. A Finder window should open with a folder named "com.apple.mail" selected. If it does, move the selected folder — not just its contents — to the Desktop. Leave the Finder window open for now.
Relaunch Mail and test. If the problem is resolved, you'll have to recreate some of your Mail settings. You can then delete the folder you moved and close the Finder window. If you still have the problem, quit Mail again and put the folder back where it was, overwriting the one that may have been created in its place. Post your results.
Caution: If you change any of the contents of the sandbox, but leave the folder itself in place, Mail may crash or not launch at all. Deleting the whole sandbox will cause it to be rebuilt automatically.

  • Do mail merge with group from address book or other file?

Is there a way to have Mail do a merge with a spreadsheet, a Filemaker file or the Address Book ( a group) so that every email looks personalized? Dear <name>,
    blah, blah, blah
I need to send out an email to about 150 faculty and staff. Messages sent to a list often get ignored or deleted unread. I need these to be read.
    Thx
    G5 Dual 2.7 GHz   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

What is the exact message you get when sending fails -- does it say there are one or more invalid addresses, or what?
Having a name in the list without email address or possibly one separated by comma between last and first might result similarly in an invalid address, and Mail will likely refuse to send to any. But if the message is from the SMTP, that might depend on the provider's policies for that.

  • Mailing to a group of contacts

    MacBook Pro 10.4.8
Is it possible to send an e-mail, say to 20 people, and set up the e-mail so that the recpients do not see the rest of the distribution list i.e. it is as if the e-mail was only sent to one person? If you cannot do this natively in mail are there any add-ons or programs that facilitate this functionality?
Does anyone know if this will be in 10.5?
    Thx
    Edward

    Edward,
It is possible to send an e-mail to multiple recipients while hiding the distribution list. Just send the e-mail to yourself and place the group in the Bcc field.
Sending an email to several people:To send someone a copy without other recipients knowing, type the person's address in the Bcc (blind carbon copy) field. (If the Bcc header is not showing in your email message, choose View > Bcc Address Field.);~)
