Mail flag

I have set certain flag colors to represent certain subjects and marked emails in my inbox with these flags.  I can then see them properly labeled in the panel below.  Currently, I use only 4 of the possible flag colors.  If, then, I exit from Mail and open it later, many (but not all) of the flags have changed or "migrated" to the color red (which is being used for a particular client).  Has anyone else experienced this?  I do have a MobileMe account to synch mail between 2 Macs but it happens whether I access the mail account on the opposite Mac or not in the time that Mail has closed.
I am doing all of this in an attempt to read mail by category.  Mail does not have a simple category field that would solve this problem.
Thoughts and suggestions would be appreciated -
Doug Turner

I haven't seen this behavior, but then, I don't really use flags.  Even without the odd behavior you describe, this solution seems a little "kludgy" to me, as it relies on rules (or manual labor) to set the color and requires you to remember what color means what.
Why don't you try setting up some smart mailboxes?  Create mailboxes that identify the messages by a set of search criteria, and then the contents of those mailboxes will constantly change to show any matching messages.  Then you won't have to worry about running out of colors, maintaining rules or manually coloring messages, and whatever's causing the color changes.
Note, though, that smart mailboxes are not actually storage locations...  they're more like remembered searches.

  • Mac Mail Flags

    Quick question with regard to emails flagged. Have no issue with defining flag names and its very helpful and at present I've got three flags defined;
    1) Urgent
    2) File note
    3) Action complete
What I would really like to do is only display the Urgent & File note flags in my sidebar. Is there anyway to do this, its is simply because I dont want my Action complete flags showing up, sounds simply and would be very helpful if this could be done.
    Cheers

    1. The first thing you have to do is set a couple of flags on some messages.
    2. Then go into the sidebar in Mail. Click the little disclosure triangle:
    3. Click on one of the names and press 'return' on the keyboard:
    4. Type in a new name and press 'return' again:

  • Mail Flag only on incoming msgs??

    Hi and thanks for reading.
While I have a Flag Mail folder on my mac which is showing all flagged mails, on my iPhone and iPad I have only a Flagged mail folder which is related to incoming mail only... so, if I flag a mail in my sent mail folder it does not appear in the iPhone flagged mail folder but only in the flagged mail folder of my MAC.
Any way to solve this issue?

  • Yosemite mail flagged mailbox

I had my flagged inboxes named according to my preferences in Mail when I was running Maverick. E.g., the red flag had ben renamed "Critical".
Now, every time I start mail, the flagged mailbox revert to the original name (e.g., "Red"). If I try to change the name again, it automatically puts up the name I had originally given in the edit field (i.e., "Critical" for "Red"). So I can rename them all. When I quit mail and get back in, they are all back to their default names. This is very annoying as I had set up a number of key-commands to automate some actions.

Thanks yes I did look through there. There is an option to uncheck 'include related messages' but when I uncheck it it doesn't appear to stop mail appending messages to older ones?
I don't actually mind mail appending messages provided it puts new ones at the top of the mail box when a new one comes in. Its having new mail not flagged as such and not at the top of the mail box which is annoying
I've been using 'sort by date' as you would think that would have the most recent emails at the top, only it doesn't. So I'm now trying using 'sort by unread'

  • Under Mail Flagged shows 1 "flagged" Nothing there when I click on it and will not remove the number1 even when I mark as read...

In Mail under Mailboxes > Flagged shows 1. There is nothing there. Have tried to mark as read and 1 still remains. How do I get rid of it?

I have tried the holding down the icon to get the shaking apps and although the X shows up clicking on it does nothing.
Mountain Lion is not for IOS based devices.
It's the Mac OS X operating system for Macintosh computers.

  • OSX 10.9.5 Mail: Flagged messages not listed correctly and/or disappearing

I have a problem using Mail V7.3(1878.6) on OSX 10.9.5:
I have about 600 flagged E-Mails in various account inboxes and archived folders, some archives are stored local on the mac, others are archived in folders on IMAP servers (NOT gmail). Total number of mail messages across all accounts is approx. 34.000.
Since the 10.9.5 update, Mail shows no flagged messages anymore or behaves weirdly. If I flag a new message, it shows up but disappears again after a while, e.g. a restart. Searching for flagged messages shows no results, even though I can see hundreds of flags in my inbox behind the messages.
I have rebuilt the mailboxes and also rebuilt the index by removing the "Envelope.*" files in user/library/mail/v2/maildata as suggested in other threads a number of times, but nothing seems to change. After each Envelope rebuild, Mail shows flags again (sometimes the correct, sometimes the wrong number, only 100 odd) and after a while they disappear again. Making a simple smart mailbox with "mail is flagged" as the only option, the smart mailbox remains empty. This has never happened before 10.9.5.
I would appreciate a comment as to what is happening here. Seems this affects quite a few people based on the activity on this subject here and in various other Mac forums on the net, but no other solution has yet been given than rebuilding indexes, which obviously leads to no permanent fix.
    Thanks.

Restart the computer in safe mode. Certain caches maintained by the system will be rebuilt.
Safe mode is much slower to start up than normal. The next normal startup may also be somewhat slow.
When the login screen appears, restart as usual (not in safe mode) and test. There's no need to log in while in safe mode.
Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the startup volume is a software RAID, you can’t start in safe mode. In that case, ask for instructions.

  • Mail flag count does not match the number of flagged emails on iMac

I have seven emails noted in the "Flagged" category on my iMas (OsX) but my flagg oount shows "8".  I have tried rebuidling, looking at support comments, etc. but nothing seems to work for the latest software update.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you very much.

Ok, There are a few more things that may help out (and please remember I'm only a novice at this too, but I'm trying to 'Pay it Forward')... 1) Try 'Synchronizing all Mail Accounts (it's an option in Mail under the pull down screen labeled 'Mailbox' (and remember, you will have to 'Restart' your Mac for the changes to take effect!) or try 2) Rebuilding your Mail account (probably an option of last resort) or 3) Go into Advanced options and delete any extraneous mailboxes you may have inadvertently created. (and Restart your Mac each time!) Good luck, have patience and write again if you have too.

  • Why is all mail flagged since iOS 5?

    Hello all -
OK, so after I upgraded to iOS 5, ALL incoming mail to either my iPhone or Ipad 2 is flagged.  I don't actually use flags EVER so now I'm having to undo all of them. Why is this happening and can I change the setting so it doesn't?  I obviously want it marked as unread but not flagged.
I've since upgraded to Lion on my MacBook (so I can set up iCloud) and now the messages are flagged there too (I have several IMAP accounts.)
    Thanks for your help -

Thanks for hearing me, at least!
This is also what's making it so difficult to figure out why it's happening. I don't know that there is a setting...?
Basically, I have four IMAP accounts plus my Mac mail account on my phone/iPad/cloud.  Whenever I receive an email to any of the other account beside the Mac mail, the little red "follow up/importance" flag is activated.  I will try to post a screen shot but it's the little red flag that usually you ONLY choose to add to an email (or maybe you can set it as a filter) - there are a few varying levels/colors of priority but it's usually an option you manually add to an email you've already received.  You can either touch the flag (it's greyed out but then activates to read) or select "Mark" and then choose Flag.
I, on the other hand, was always choosing a whole bunch and choosing Mark "Unflag" but have grown weary.  :-(
Instead, every email is coming in with that flag of importance already applied...
Aha - found a screen cap online.  This is the flag that I'm talking about - coming in automatically flagged on all four accounts, every email, except my Mac account.
And, I can't find a setting anywhere to change either, that's why I'm flummoxed...?

  • Mail flag icons are missing, shows color name instead

I'm running Mail 8.0 on Yosemite.  In "classic" mode the flag column shows the textual names of the flag color rather than flag icons in the appropriate color.  In non-classic mode (or whatever you'd call it) the flag icons appear as expected.  Is this a bug?  Is there any way to get the flags to be displayed?
    Example:
    Thanks!

I was afraid this problem was some Apple UI person's absurd idea of making the interface better, like the horrible new Tags, and complaining, etc... but before posting I restarted Mail and the flags came back.
I love my Mac stuff but I must confess a month ago I set up Outlook (but I'm still resisting using it : ), because of so many Mail bugs in the past couple of OS updates. Problems with IMAP, with conversations bunching up unrelated messages, now flags disappearing... Tell me that someone is working on the bugs!

  • Junk Mail Flagging Issue

I was trying to correct an error I made with Mail and I clicked reset in the junk mail pane. Now it no longer marks anything as junk. I have junk filtering enabled. It's set to mark as junk but leave it in my inbox. I know this is training mode and I am marking the spam as junk but I thought it would still mark the messages that didn't conform to the default rules of the sender not being in address book, or in previous recipients, etc. but it's not. Prior to my clicking on reset it was marking them correctly.
Does the filter start picking these up after a certain period of time or is there something I need to correct?

You should set the junk mail filter to move the mail to the junk folder.
Mail / Junk will eventually 'learn' what is and not junk.
Until you have a large amount of mail in the junk it would be advisable to check through once in a while for messages that you actually need.
Spamsieve gives you the oppotunity to create rules to keep the messages from known address's. Download the 30 day trial to give a go, if you prefer mail junk filtering you can revert back after 30 days.
For your information, I get between 70-100 spam messages per day, I now trust spamsieve to filter them out - it does a great job.

Yes, the junk filter is actually a (hidden) rule like any other that’s always evaluated last, and hence, is never applied to messages already moved to other mailboxes by any of your own rules.
If that’s not what you want, you can go to Preferences > Junk Mail > Advanced, take note of how the junk filter rule is defined (you can make a screen shot of it), set up a custom rule that does exactly the same, and place it above the other rules.
